INTRODUCTION
What is a personal assistant?
Personal assistant is someone who assists in daily
business and personal life.

What is Cortana?
Cortana is worlds first truly personal virtual assistant. It
is powered by the popular search engine Bing. It is
inspired from the much loved video game HALO. The
voice behind this personal assistant is of Jenifer Lee
Taylor. It is currently available for Windows Phone 8.1 and
Windows 10.

It was first demonstrated by Joe Belfiore (Corporate Vice
President, Operating Systems Group at Microsoft) at
BUILD Conference held at San Francisco.

CORTANAS NOTEBOOK

What is Cortanas Notebook?

The notebook keeps track of what you tell her about

yourself. Some of the interests she will figure out herself
based on your interaction with her and others you might
chose yourself. You can view and edit manually (all of
them), whenever you want.

What does this notebook contain?

1). Daily Routine

Daily Routine contains all the information that Cortana
stores about your daily schedules. It can further contain
the information about your meetings, appointments,
shopping lists and much more.

2). Remind Me
Remind Me contains the information about the things you
want Cortana to remember for you. The reminders can be
of three types first, a task to be performed at a specific
time. Say, you want to exercise at 8:00 AM cortana will
remember for you and will remind you on time. Second, a
task to be performed when you reach at specific location
(say your home). Say, you want but butter when you
reach a grocery store then Cortana will remind you about
it. Third, a reminder regarding involving a person. Say,
you want to congratulate your friend about his new
achievement then Cortana can help you out here.

3). Quiet Hours

Cortana knows when you dont to be disturbed. When the
Quiet Hours are switch on she simply silences the
notifications and attend the calls and text messaged
received at that interval of time.

4). Inner Circle

This feature is associated with Quiet Hours. Cortana
knows the most important people in your life. Further,
allowing them break through the Quiet Hours and
allowing them to contact you whenever they want. The

list of people who can break through the Quiet Hours is

decided by us by simply putting that contact in Inner
Circle.

5). Places
Cortana also helps in discovering new places. She
remembers the places you have been and which one of
those like the most. You can set your favorite location in it
and set reminder on the basis of it.

FEATURES THAT MAKE CORTANA

DIFFERENT
Its response time is less. Though Cortana requires an
internet connection to work its response time is
exceptionally well.

 Reminders can be set for a particular place and a

specific person. What other virtual personal assistants
have is only reminders. They can only remind about few
tasks, but Cortana can remind you in various ways
whether its a task, a place or a person associated
reminder.
Understands natural language which means that user
do not need to know any pre-programmed words. It
means that you can interact with her in whatever the way
you want. You do not need say the same line every time.
Say, you want to know the weather in Paris either you can
just say How is the weather outside? or What is the
weather outside? or Do I need an umbrella today? or
Do I need a coat? and many more ways are possible
too.
Cortana learns about you. As you interact more with
Cortana she keeps on learning about you by learning how
you speak, what are the most common words you use,
what places you regularly visit and much more.
Cortana does not sound like a programmed voice. It
means many virtual assistants in the market sound
programmed that is everytime you speak anything of the
same kind it will reply you in the same way every time,
but Cortana replies you accordingly.
