Music has changed a lot over the years, but you always remember the ones with
iconic dance moves or storyline through the music video.
The music video directors are the ones that create the video and put all these
pieces to create what we watch and what we remember.
Nigel Dick has a style, I want to say but it is not noticeable in all of his videos due
to the genres of the songs, Ive noticed that many of the songs he has directed
they have a narrative and performance element of them.
Nigel Dick is originally from the UK and moved to America to start his career in
directing music videos.
In the 1980s he moved to phonogram records and directed the original band aid
video do they know its Christmas. In 1986 he moved to LA and co-founded
propaganda films, Which became a major production company.
The idea of narrative and performance is very clear in most of his videos, using
the theorist lynch for example.
Nigel Dick directed the iconic video of baby one more time performed by
Britney spears.

The iconic costume and dancing is what everyone remembers from this music
video.
In this video there are many different costume changes and shots of Britney as
she is a female icon, to both women and men. Looking at Goodwins codes and
conventions, this video links the music to visuals through dance. This music
video is a very high performance video and with the narrative of school but the
performance element is a lot clearer. For Gows codes of display of performance,
this vide4o comes under the song and dance number, because the video focuses
on the dance moves of the artist.

Using the theories of Goodwin, Lynch and Gow, The Pussycat Dolls video of
Stickwitu, directed by Nigel Dick, you can notice a lot of elements that the
theorists have wrote in their music video.
Looking at Goodwin, the video has a lot of close ups of the main singer, which he
has highlighted as one of his key codes and conventions.
Nigel Dick knows the elements of a music video and creates what the audience
wants to see. This video has many concepts, it has a part of every stereotypical
music video, by how it has a narrative, it has live performance, it has an aspect
of

dance and there a loads of close ups of the main singer.

In Chers video Believe,

directed by Nigel Dick, there a
lot of close up shots of Cher
singing.
There is also a narrative in
this video but a lot is
performance because
incorporates into the narrative of the video.

Nickelbacks video of photograph, is very
performance based but is a narrative throughout,
but he sings directly into the camera, instead of
an audience like a on stage performance, which
is different to other videos Nigel Dick have
directed.
