Unsung Hero
This month's
unsung hero is Phil
Forbes. Phil is a newer
member of our church but ever since he joined
us he has been a rock of Gibraltar for all of us.
There is never a task too large or small for Phil
to climb aboard. He is very active in the
feeding of the Homeless on Wednesday nights
and is always there on Thursday for the Tri
Tip service.
He is a great addition to our
hospitality committee and I personally owe
Phil a debt of gratitude for the way he pitched
in on the BBQ at the Church Picnic in June.
He covered for me as well as his own duties.
In a word, dependable, and commitment seem
to be mantra's that Phil wears.
Congratulations my friend, you truly
deserve this recognition.
Bill Martin

Call for Clothing

We are in need of mens
pants. We have an abundance of
shirts and of course, always need
socks. We are good on womens clothing at the
present time. We also are out of reading
glasses so if you have spares laying around, we
can use them. Also if you have extra cloth or
sturdy plastic shopping bags that you would
like to donate we would love to have them.
They really appreciate the strong bags. Your
donations are greatly appreciated by the guests
at the meal. Thanks!
Phil

Pathways Of Hope Needs Us

The Mission of Pathways of
Hope is this: We aim, through a
faith-based community effort of prevention
and support services, to build self-sufficiency
and end hunger and homelessness for families
and individuals in need. What a privilege for
First Christian Church of Fullerton to be a part
of this mission. Lets do our part by donating
these food supplies that are needed by
Pathways in September:
Dried beans
Oatmeal
Canned fruit
Pasta
Peanut butter
Canned meat
Jelly
Crackers
Cereal
Trail mix
Please place your donations in the red
tubs below the Pathways of Hope sign in the
Narthex. Do your part to fill those tubs to
overflowing!
P.S. Did you know that a worker
making Orange Countys current minimum
wage would have to work 110 hours each week
just to afford a typical one-bedroom OC
apartment, which rents for $1,238 a month.
Thats 110 hours of work each week just for
housing cost. [From 2015 Orange County
Community Indicators]
Thanks for caring about others.

Dr. David Matson's October Bible
Lectures on I Peter
Tuesdays 4,11,18, and 25,
7:00-8:30 p.m. in Chapman Lounge
Every year Dr. David Matson brings us
a month of fresh biblical lectures that are
always as creatively inspiring as they are
humorous, enjoyable, and thought-provoking.
Ask any who have attended regularly in the
past six years of this series. We are indeed
fortunate to have such a great communicator
and local scholar in biblical studies from Hope
International University to speak with us.
This October David Matson will be
leading us through a tour of 1 Peter, a rather
neglected letter but one full of great topics to
be explored, including election, predestination,
redemption, family relationships, atonement,
eldership, and many more! The letter also
contains the notion that Jesus went into the
abode of the dead to preach the gospel upon
which the later Apostles Creed was based (he
descended into hell), so you do not want to
miss any part of this exciting study

2016-2017 Discipleship Discernment

Team
This years committee will be
comprised of the following church members:
Craig Wallace, Leslie Beck, Sue
Harless, Pat Vannoy Jr., Barry Woodbridge,
Pat Vannoy Sr., and Pastor Mandye Yates.
Once again this year, we will not be just
looking for bodies to fill the slate. We will be
striving to identify those who we believe are
called to serve this congregation. We seek to
help individuals build and develop their
ministry calling. We recognize that people
need to serve in ways of interest to them,
using their spiritual gifts.
Members of the Discipleship Discernment
Team will be turning to you to help them identify
people to serve this congregation through
discipleship. We are aware that this person
might even be you, yourself. We would ask
each of you to listen to that still, small voice
of God that nudges you to reflection and
action. Respond courageously by letting us
know that maybe/possibly you are willing
to give prayer-based and spirit-filled service
to this congregation. You might also know
of another who represents Christ-centered
leadership skills. We ask that you share
with us th e n a me of this person so that
we may begin a thoughtful conversation
with them to see if serving the needs of the
church is a possibility for them in the
coming year.
Thank you, and may God guide our
direction.

Abbey in Oceanside, CA. Prince of Peace
Abbey is located on one level. Handicap

will have a beautiful view!!
The theme is: Aging Well: Blessed to
Be a Blessing. Our Retreat Leader is the Rev.
Karen Berns from Pasadena. She is a
Presbyterian Pastor who, in addition to serving
local congregations, has served as a Hospice
Chaplain. She is on the design team for the
New Theological Seminary of Wests
Certificate in Spirituality and Aging and is a
member of the faculty for this program. She
serves on the Ecumenical Committee on
Spirituality and Aging. She has led teams to
both teach and serve in Kenya and Malawi.
This retreat will provide resources for all
people who are concerned about Senior
Ministry in their church and who desire to
grow in their spiritual life.
The registration fee is $85 a person. The
full fee is $120, but each registration is being
subsidized with a gift of $35 from the Older
Adult Ministry Committee. Donna in the office

at 'Prince of Peace' of 40 persons

Going back to the 1960s

when our nation was rocked by
several racial riots that exploded in
communities across the nation, including the
Watts riot in Los Angeles, members of
Disciples congregations across the US and
Canada have supported the annual
Reconciliation Offering on the last Sunday of
September and the first Sunday of October.
This Sunday, September 18, the worship
bulletin will have an insert about the
Reconciliation Ministry Special Offering and
an envelope for our use in making a gift on
either September 25 or October 2.. Everyone is
encouraged to read the information on the
back of the insert which lists these four cities in
our country: Charleston, Ferguson, San
Bernardino and Orlando. What happened in
these four cities in recent months is well
known to all of us. The theme for the 2016
Reconciliation Offering is Move Together,
Heal Together, Bound Together.
The funds we, and other Disciples
congregations, make available through this
special offering will be used to fund projects in
Regions across our denomination. Here in the
Pacific Southwest Region, one half of the funds
we generate will come back to us so that our
Region's Anti-Racism/Pro-Reconciliation
Committee will have resources to fund projects
to promote reconciliation in the PSW Region.
The Outreach Ministry has established
a goal of $840.00 for the 2016 Reconciliation
Offering. Please use the special envelope to
make your gift, or simply write
Reconciliation on the memo line of your
check. Your support of the 2016
Reconciliation Offering will be greatly
appreciated.

Jesus and understanding his call for our lives.
Each night from Sept. 19 23 from 7
8:30 pm at Wilshire Avenue Community
Church, there will be worship bands, speakers
and MCs from nine congregations facilitating
