Certification
Accredited instituions *7 in canada*
Scope of practice
Opportunities in profession vary (from working with sports teams, to

individual sports, or athletes in general from an injury perspective)

You can also work in a clinic setting (athletes or not) and go through

assessment and treatment process with them.

CATA.org
OCTA certification also needed to work

NATIONAL ATHELETIC TRAINERS ASSOCIATION

History of association (350M+ 100s of intitutions that offer these types of

programs)
Certification (many hours accumulated, exam, oral practical exam)
Allow to challenge exam if youre Canadian (meaning your certified through
CATA so you dont go to school all over again, same thing in USA->CANADA)

Opportunities in the profession (similar wether working with teams, athelets,

sports medicine, or clinical setting) but USA has more sports teams so there
are obviously more opportunities USA has more opportunities for sports
players (more teams playing, more people participating etc more fan base,

bigger stadium)
US culture varsity based sports playing, its just a better environment for

Athletic therapy
Therapists in USA have more funds, Canadian therapists have limited
equipment, while the U.S equipment is like a whole room, with multiple
supplies. They have a budget and the Canadian A.T is negligible

Sport Physiotherapy Canada

in sports medicine as a physician

The knowledge they do not have is the sport specific, which this diploma

is supposed to teach
As a doctor you can work in your own practice (but you can also do that as
a AT or PT)

Health Care at Major Games

Olympics, commonwealth games, pan am games, world cup etc

Who makes up the medical team

-

People from all backgrounds, (physican, physical therapist, athletic

therapist)
AT are the first response towards these

Ethical and Legal aspects of Injury Care

-

NFL knew risks of multiple head injuries but didnt disclose it and make a

treatment plan
Understanding how to protect athletes as an athletic therapist while also

protecting yourself from law suits, and legal issues

E.X an athlete misses his medical exam, coach wants the athlete to

participate but you have the final say what will you do.
Athlete has the final say at the end of the day despite, but you have to
make sure to protect it. Legal medical record, witness. Just in case the
athlete gets hurt they can blame you and they say you are the fault

because you said they can play!

If athlete is unconscious YOU have to make the call if they play or not.

Otherwise its always the athletes call

Head injury and their not rational in their thought process (risk to

themselves and cannot make rational decision)

Lets say one athlete has HIV, and they are bleeding you can also make the
call because it is a risk to other athletes (your call as a medicial

practitioner)
Depending on the circumstances, you or the athlete can make the
decision if they are allowed to continue to play or not
