India Human Development Survey

Description
Abstract:
The India Human Development Survey 2005 (IHDS) is a nationally representative, multitopic survey of 41,554 households in 1503 villages and 971 urban neighborhoods across
India. Two one-hour interviews in each household covered health, education,
employment, economic status, marriage, fertility, gender relations, and social capital.
Children aged 8-11 completed short reading, writing and arithmetic tests. Additional
village, school, and medical facility interviews will be available later. IHDS was jointly
organized by researchers from the University of Maryland and the National Council of
Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi. Funding for the survey was
provided by the National Institutes of Health, grants R01HD041455 and R01HD046166.

Purpose:
IHDS has four characteristics that make it unique among Indian surveys:
breadth of topics;
depth of human development indicators;
a panel component;
a rich array of contextual measures.
Breadth. IHDS was designed to complement existing Indian surveys by bringing
together a wide range of topics in a single survey. This breadth permits analyses of
associations across a range of social and economic conditions. For example, studying
childrens outcomes (e.g., learning, immunizations) requires joint consideration of the
role of poverty, family structure, gender relations, community context, and the
availability of facilities. All of these are available in IHDS.
Depth. Studies of human development have traditionally focused on a well accepted set
of social and economic indicators (e.g., poverty, school enrollments). Most of these
indicators are available in IHDS but have been supplemented with additional measures
that provide a fuller understanding of actual human development. For example, IHDS
measures not only school enrollments but childrens actual achievements in reading,
arithmetic, and writing. Also, the usual consumption based measures of living standards
are supplemented with detailed questions on the levels and sources of income in order to
better understand how the household came to its current economic position.
Panel. 13,900 rural households were interviewed in a 1993-94 by NCAER that used
many of the measures in IHDS. Comparisons with the earlier survey permit a
disaggregation of net changes over time into components of changes in different
directions. These outcomes enable analyses of the characteristics of which households
have changed. (Not available in Release 01).
Contexts. In addition to the household surveys, IHDS includes village, school, and
medical facility surveys. Extensive Census data are also available to be merged for
contextual analyses at the village, district, and state levels. (Not available in Release 01).

India Human Development Survey

Within the household survey, several sections focus on the households connections to
the wider community.
All of these features make IHDS especially useful for analyzing causal patterns
underlying changes in human development. However, users who are primarily interested
in descriptions of current levels of a particular human development indicator might prefer
surveys with larger samples that are more narrowly focused on that topic (e.g., the
National Sample Surveys, the Sample Registration System, or the National Family Health
Survey). Users who want a state-level measure of a particular human development
outcome are especially cautioned against relying exclusively on the smaller state samples
of IHDS.

Merging and Linking Files:

Merging the household and individual files should be easy. Sort both by stateid distid
psuid hhid hhsplitid (or by idhh which is the 10-byte equivalent) and merge or link using
those sort variables. There are no household records without at least one individual
record and no individual records without a household record.
Merging the eligible woman data from the household file with her individual information
from the individual file should also be straightforward. The variable EWxx is the eligible
womans person id on both the household and individual files. It is blank (.a) on
households without an eligible woman, and blank for all individuals who are not eligible
woman. Records with a blank EWxx can be dropped.

In the following sections of the individual file, the questionnaire listed only those
household members who fit some criteria (e.g., had a fever, cough, or diarrhoea). If a
household member did not fit the overall criteria, then they would be missing (.) for the
entire section. Users will usually want to recode these missing values to zero (No) for
many of the variables in these sections.

Survey Methodology:
The survey was carried out in face-to-face interviews containing the following modules:
1. An interview with a knowledgeable informant typically the head of the
household regarding socio-economic condition of the household including
income, employment, educational status and consumption expenditure.
2. An interview with an ever-married woman aged 15-49 regarding health,
education, fertility, family planning, marriage, and gender relations in the
household and community.
3. Short reading, writing, and arithmetic knowledge tests were administered to all
available children aged 8-11 in the household. These tests were developed in
collaboration with researchers from Pratham, India, and were pretested to ensure
comparability across languages.
4. Height and weight measurement of children under age 5, aged 8-11, and their
mothers.
5. Facilities assessment of one government and one private primary school and
primary health care facility in the community.
6. Village questionnaire assessing employment opportunities and infrastructure
facilities in the village.
The survey instruments were translated into 13 Indian languages and were administered
by local interviewers.

India Human Development Survey

Sample:
IHDS was conducted in all states and union territories of India (with the exception of
Andaman Nicobar and Lakshadweep). The sample consists 27,010 rural and 13,126
urban households. The sample was drawn using stratified random sampling and contains
13,900 rural households who were interviewed in 1993-94 in a previous survey by
NCAER and 28,428 new households. Of the 612 districts in India in 2001, 382 are
included in IHDS. The sample is spread across 1503 villages and 971 urban blocks.

Fieldwork:
The fieldwork was carried out by 24 collaborating institutions under the supervision of
the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi. Locally
knowledgeable and linguistically fluent interviewers were hired by the collaborating
institutions and trained by senior project personnel from NCAER and the University of
Maryland. A team of one male and one female interviewer visited each home; women
respondents were interviewed by women interviewers whenever possible.
Fieldwork began in November 2004 and was mostly completed by October 2005.

India Human Development Survey, Release 01

Sampling
The IHDS household sample (N=41,554) is a composite of several separate subsamples that were each drawn somewhat differently. The basic division is between a reinterview sample of households previously interviewed mostly in 1994-5 for the Human
Development Profile of India (HDPI), N = 13,900, and new households, N= 27,654, but
each of these divisions are themselves comprised of distinct components.

Re-interview households:
1 Re-interview households (N = 13,900)
1a Re-interview of HDPI (N=13,126)
1a1 Original: total village (N=9,399)
1a2 Original: partial village (N=2,165)
1a3 Substitute: partial village (N=1,562)
1b Re-interview of Karnataka study (N= 774)

New households:
2 Replacement sample for lost village listings of HDPI (N = 4051)
2a All district listings lost (N= 1,856)
2b Some village listings lost within a district (N= 2,195)
3 Refresher sample from HDPI districts (N = 7,843)
4 Extension sample from states and union territories not sampled in 1994 (N = 1216)
5 Urban sample (N = 14,544)
1. Re-interviews. The 1994-1995 HDPI survey included a sample of 33, 230 rural
households that were eligible for re-sampling for IHDS. The IHDS goal was to reinterview half of these households. We estimated that 20% of the households would have
divided into two or more split households in the intervening ten years. All split
households that remained within the village would be re-interviewed. We anticipated not
being able to contact 20% of the households because of migration, death or other reasons,
leaving a projected sample of about 15,000 households.
The HDPI sampling design was a complicated stratified sample so it was not
possible simply to choose a random half of the villages for re-interviews: that would have
resulted in some strata being over-represented and others under-represented. On the other
hand, selecting a random half of the households within each strata would have required
re-visiting almost all of the HDPI villages, a too costly option. A compromise was
reached in which HDPI villages were randomly ranked within each district and
households were sampled within each strata according to this ranking. Thus, within
stratum 1, households were first sampled from stratum 1 households in village #1, then
from stratum 1 households in village #2, and so on until half of the stratum 1 households
had been re-sampled. A similar procedure was followed with stratum 2 households and
all the remaining strata.
The resulting sample usually included all the HDPI households from village #1
and other high ranking villages; and no households from low ranking villages. In middleranking villages, only some households were selected for re-interview, depending on

India Human Development Survey, Release 01

their strata and whether the 50% quota from that strata had been reached. If only one or
two households were selected for re-interview in a particular village, we dropped those
households from the re-interview sample.
Thus, the original sample households can be divided into a total village reinterview sample and a partial village re-interview sample. We did not anticipate being
able to re-contact all households, so within each strata for each district, alternative
(replacement) households were designated. When a stratum quota was not met in a
district, these alternative households were selected into the re-interview sample. The
replacement/ alternative sample was, by definition, taken from the partial re-interview
villages (although if enough replacements were chosen, it is possible that some of these
partial re-interview villages may eventually have been totally re-interviewed).
In the early phase of fieldwork, these replacement households were taken from
the same district. Towards the end of the fieldwork, any same-stratum alternative
household within the state was used as a replacement.
2. HDPI replacement villages. When HDPI was fielded in 1994, there was no
anticipation that it would be used as the base for a future panel study. Thus it was quite
fortuitous that sufficient records were available to trace the original households.
Nevertheless, those records were quite limited. No names or addresses were available
from either the electronic records or any remaining questionnaires.
The most important existing record was the household listing that created the
sampling frame within each village. This household listing was, in fact, the main source
even for the names of the HDPI villages. These village names were matched against lists
from the 1991 census. Alternative spellings, multiple villages with the same names, and
villages with alternative names created uncertainties for identifying some villages that
had to be resolved by field inquiries.
The household listing provided names of all household heads in the village (or,
for large villages, the section of the village that was sampled for a complete listing).
While heads' names were central, the listings also provided a very limited amount of
additional information needed for identifying in which stratum the household fell.
Religion and broad caste community (scheduled caste or scheduled tribe) were recorded,
but in many villages these did not vary across households. Somewhat more helpful in
identifying households were a broad occupational classification and, if a cultivator, size
of landholding. And, most importantly, the listing sheet identified which households had
been selected into the sample.
Armed with information from this listing, plus a record of the 1994 households
composition by age and sex, interviewers quizzed village leaders about who these
households were and where they now lived. In almost all cases, the village leaders were
able to identify the households, whether they remained in the village, and if the
households had split. The households themselves usually recalled in some detail the visits
of the two interviewers over a decade earlier and thus confirmed these identifications.
Unfortunately, this happy story could not be repeated in all places. Household
listings for some villages had been permanently lost. In a few states (notably Karnataka,
Kerala, U.P. and some districts in Andhra Pradesh) no household listings could be found
for entire districts. These two situations were handled somewhat differently.

India Human Development Survey, Release 01

HDPI households from a missing village within an otherwise completely

identified district were included in the population from which the re-interview sample
was selected. If, in drawing the 50% re-interview sample, a household was selected from
a village with no household listing, interviewers drew a new household sample of the
same size from that village.
In districts where all HDPI house listings had been lost, HDPI villages were
ranked randomly and the first five villages were selected. In these five villages, a fresh
household listing was completed and a sample of 20 households was drawn from this
listing.
In Karnataka, where listings from several districts were lost, IHDS took
advantage of a later NCAER study that included many of the same questions as the 1994
HDPI. Households from that survey were randomly selected in similar proportions to the
sampling of HDPI households.
3 Refresher Sample. A new sample of households was drawn in each of the
HDPI districts. Two villages were randomly chosen from the census list of 1991 villages
in the districts with probability proportional to population size. Villages were sorted by a
random number within randomly sorted tehsils and listed together with the cumulative
population. A sampling interval was determined based on a third of the total district rural
population, and the computer program identified a random starting point within that
population interval. The starting point and the intervals identified two sample villages
and a reserve village. Twenty households were sampled from each of the selected villages
based on a fresh village listing.
4. Extension sample. IHDS was conducted in eleven states and union territories
that had not been included in the original HDPI universe. Depending on the size of the
state, three, six or (for Jammu & Kashmir) twenty villages were sampled with probability
proportional to size from the 1991 census village listing. These states and the number of
sampled villages are:
Arunachal Pradesh
Goa
Jammu & Kashmir
Manipur
Meghalaya
Mizoram

For all states except Jammu & Kashmir, villages were sorted by a random number
within randomly sorted districts and listed together with the cumulative population. A
sampling interval was determined based on a proportion of the total state rural population
that would yield the desired number of the villages plus one reserve village. A random
starting point was chosen from within this interval. The starting point and the intervals

India Human Development Survey, Release 01

identified the villages to be sampled. Twenty households were sampled on each of the
selected villages using a fresh village listing.
In Jammu and Kashmir, this process was modified so that four districts were first
randomly selected from the state and then five villages and a reserve were sampled from
each of these districts with probability proportional to size. For Jammu and Kashmir, we
had to wait for the publication of the 2001 census village listing and population sizes
since no census was conducted in Jammu and Kashmir in 1991.
5. Urban sample. HDPI only collected data in rural areas. Therefore, we drew a
new sample for urban areas for IHDS. The urban sample was based on the 2001 Indian
Census list of all Indian towns and cities. Some states and territories were combined for
the purpose of drawing the sample: Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and
Bihar, Chandigarh and Punjab, Delhi and Haryana, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman &
Diu and Maharashtra. The small island territories of Lakshadweep and the Andaman &
Nicobar Islands were excluded from the sampling frame. This left 27 states (of the
actual 35 states and union territories) from which samples were drawn.
These states were originally divided into four size groups with different target
samples (1125, 900, 630, and 315 households). This was later amended to include a
separate group of very small states (45 household target); Uttaranchal was also given a
separate category with a target of 135 households.
The minimum number of households that would be interviewed in a town was 45:
15 households in each of three Census-defined neighborhoods. Once a town was
selected, the Census drew the requested number of neighborhoods randomly from their
(non-public) list of neighborhoods and supplied (2001) maps of the selected
neighborhoods. Each decade, the Census draws these neighborhoods of approximately
equal size (about 200(?) households) in all Indian towns and cities. With the Census
maps as a guide, interview teams visited each neighborhood, updated the list of
households, and drew a sample of 15 households from the updated list.
Towns were sampled from the 2001 Census list with probabilities proportional to
their population. The list of towns was first sorted by population size within each state.
The number of intervals for each state were calculated as the targeted number of
households divided by 45 (the minimum sample size). The total urban population in each
state was divided by this number of intervals to determine an interval size; a random
starting point was selected within the first interval; and towns were selected if the interval
fell within the towns cumulative population. Larger cities were selected multiple times
with this method and the number of neighborhoods determined by this multiple.

Constructed Variables: Case and Geographic Identification

IHDS households are uniquely identified by the combination of stateid + distid + psuid +
hhid + hhsplitid (where + signifies concatenation, not addition). In the individual file,
persons are uniquely identified by the combination of those variables + personid. Several
other identification variables are available to assist in sorting and merging files and for
identifying geographic areas.

caseid: There is a string variable named caseid in both the hh and ind files, but they are
different variables! In the hh file, caseid uniquely identifies each household (i.e., =
stateid + distid + psuid + hhid + hhsplitid ) while in the ind file caseid uniquely identifies
each person (i.e., = stateid +distid +psuid + hhid + hhsplitid + personid).

idhh: idhh is a long integer variable that uniquely identifies each household. idhh is
calculated as stateid*10000000 + distid*100000 + psuid*1000 + hhid*10 + hhsplitid.

idpsu: idpsu is a long integer variable that uniquely identifies each primary sampling
unit (psu). It is useful for identifying survey clusters in some statistical analyses. idpsu is
calculated as stateid*10000 + distid*100 + psuid.

stateid2: stateid2 is a slightly collapsed version of stateid that creates 22 states and state
groups from the 33 states in IHDS. stateid2 also sorts the states into a slightly different
regional order. Chandigarh is collapsed into Punjab. All Northeast states and Sikkim are
treated as a single group. Daman and Diu is collapsed into Gujarat. Dadra and Nagar
Haveli is also collapsed into Gujarat. Goa is collapsed into Maharashtra. Pondicherry is
collapsed into Tamil Nadu.

dist01: District identifiers in IHDS (distid) are generally the census 2001 district
identification number. In a small number of cases (317 households), distid does not

India Human Development Survey, Release 01

12

record the correct census code. The correct 2001 census code is always given in dist01.
However, dist01 should not be used for sorting or identifying households since psu and
household ids are not unique within dist01. stateid is always the 2001 census state code.

distname: distname is a 4 digit integer code combining the 2001 census state and
district codes. Value labels provide the name of each district.

urban: This dichotomy identifies every primary sampling unit that was in an urban area
as identified by the 2001 census. It differs slightly from the code recorded in the
urban/rural variable, id9, on the household survey which was created from the sampling
design. 19 rural psus in the sampling design were changed to urban areas in the 2001
census.

sweight: The IHDS sample is a complex combination of rural and urban samples (see
the section on samples). To calculate population estimates for India or for individual
states, sweight is needed as a design weight in all analyses.

metro6: The six largest metropolitan areas (Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai,
Bangalore, and Hyderabad) are identified as codes 1-6 in metro6 households in all other
areas are coded as missing. Metropolitan areas were defined as any district included in
the census definition of urban conglomerates for each of these six areas. These
districts often include both urban and rural areas; all parts are included in the metro6
categories. Delhi is a slight exception to this definition. The Census of India does not
allow urban conglomerates to cross state boundaries, although parts of U.P. and Haryana
are clearly part of the larger Delhi metropolitan area. To correct for this, Gurgaon district
in Haryana and Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar districts in U.P. are included as
part of the Delhi metropolitan area.

HH19 12. Monthly consumption per capita

IHDS asked a series of 47 questions about household consumption designed to estimate

total household consumption expenditures (see the household questionnaire pages 19-21).
These questions were modeled on the short form of the National Sample Survey. The
total expenditure is often used as the best measure of the households current economic
level. The first thirty, more frequently purchased items, used a 30-day time frame while
the remaining 17 items used an annual time frame. The variable, cototal, reports
expenditures on a monthly basis, so items co31-co47 were divided by 12 before being
summed in the final variable.
Total monthly consumption had to be calculated for the first fourteen consumption items
(page 19 of the questionnaire). These totals are stored as co1x, co2x, ... co14x on the
data file.
The first five consumption items (rice, wheat, sugar, kerosene, and other cereals) could
be purchased in PDS (public distribution system) shops, purchased in the market, or
home produced (except kerosene). Total monthly expenditures for these items was
calculated from the households report of the quantity and price purchased from PDS
shops plus the report of the quantity home-produced or purchased in the market times the
reported market price. Market and home-produced quantities were calculated from the
difference between PDS purchases and the total consumed.
For the next nine items, the household could report either the quantity consumed and the
market price, or the total value of the items consumed. Sometimes, interviewers reported
all three values. In rare cases where all three values were reported there was a
discrepancy (the total value did not equal the quantity times the price). In these cases
IHDS used the quantity and price reports and disregarded the total value report.
The final consumption total was calculated as the sum of the constructed variables co1x
to co14x, the monthly items co15 to co30, and one twelfth of the annual items co31 to
co47.

Constructed Variables: Education (household)

IHDS collected several useful educational measures for individuals such as literacy (ed2),
years of schooling (ed5), class/division of secondary school exam (ed9), and English
language fluency (ed7). At the household level, the highest school attainment among
adult women (hhed5f) and among adult men (hhed5m) are taken from individual
education records. Adults are defined as individuals 21 years or older. In households
without an adult 21 or older, the education of the person listed as head or heads spouse is
taken. The highest overall adult education (hhed5adult) is the maximum of highest male
and highest female education.

IHDS collected labour force participation data based on its extensive income questions.
Within each income section, IHDS asked who in the household participated in this
activity and what was their level of participation. Thus, when IHDS asked whether the
household owns any animals, it then asked who takes care of these animals. Similarly, if
the household farmed, IHDS asked who worked on the farm for how many days last year
and how many hours on the usual day. Non-farm businesses were treated similarly. The
main household respondent also reported who worked for payment in cash or kind.
Interviewers were specifically trained to ask about the participation of women and
children as well as adult males in these activities. The combination of information from
the different activity streams provides a holistic picture of the types of economic
activities undertaken by all individuals in the households in the preceding year.
The public use file summarizes these data in one overall work participation measure
(wkany) and six subtypes of participation (wkfarm..wkbusiness) for each individual.
Household-level measures are constructed by adding the number of persons working in
each type of activity (Nany .. Nbusiness). Only the individual work participation
measures measures (wkany..wkbusiness) are available on the individual data file; only
the household totals (Nany .. Nbusiness) are on the household file.
Wage and salary workers are divided into three types: salary workers (wksalary) are paid
monthly or annually; agricultural workers (wkagwage) are paid daily and report an
agricultural occupation (ws3 = codes 60-68); all other daily wage workers are recorded
as nonagricultural wage workers (wknonag).
For purposes of these measures, an individual must have reported working at least 240
hours in that activity in last year to be coded as working.

IHDS asked a series of questions about what goods the household owned and about the
quality of the housing. Similar housing and consumer goods questions are now widely
used in developing country surveys as an easily administered scale measuring household
economic level. Even more than consumption expenditures, household asset scales
reflect the long-term economic level of the household.
The hhassets scale sums 30 dichotomous items measuring household possessions and
housing quality:

The hhassets scale has a Cronbachs reliability coefficient alpha of 0.914 (unweighted).
Three items that had been candidates for the scale were dropped because they
substantially lowered the reliability coefficient suggesting that they did not measure the
same dimension as the remaining 30 items; cg5 owns a generator; hq2a any excrement
observe around the house; and hq2b any standing water around the house.
Four consumer goods items were modified because they were less expensive alternatives
for other items in the scale: cg9 air coolers (vs. cg19 air conditioners); cg7 a black and
white television (vs. cg8 a colour television); cg6 a motor scooter (vs. cg18 an
automobile); and a cg2 bicycle (vs. a cg6 scooter or cg18 automobile). In these cases, if
the household owned the more expensive alternative (e.g., an air conditioner), then the
less expensive item (e.g., air cooler) was recoded as owned, regardless of whether the
household reported owning the less desirable item. Without this modification, the less
expensive items did not scale well; a household might not own them either because they
were too affluent (and owned the more expensive alternative) or because they were too
poor (and owned neither alternative).
The resulting hhassets scale ranges from 0 to 30, with a weighted median of 10, a
weighted mean of 11.3, and a weighted standard deviation of 6.3.

IHDS is one of the first developing country surveys to collect detailed income data. Most
surveys depend on consumption expenditures or household assets to measure a
households economic level. IHDS collected those data also (see above), but went to
great lengths to measure household income as well. Over 50 different income sources
were queried. The public use file collects those sources into eight major income types
(incfarm .. incother) plus a total income variable (income). All are household-level
variables but all are included in both the household and individual data files.
The most difficult income source to estimate is farm income (incfarm). Over half of
IHDS households had some farm income, so this is an important component of the total
income estimate. IHDS asked about crop production and prices, use of crop residues,
animal ownership and home-produced animal and crop products, expenses for a variety
of farm inputs, and agricultural rents paid and received. IHDS staff continue to work on
refining these data to produce the best income estimates possible.
Negative farm income is reported by about 9 percent of the sample. Crop failures and
high expenses are a frequent source of debate in India so this estimate seems reasonable.
Negative farm incomes result in negative total income estimates for about 1 percent of
the households. Other analyses by IHDS staff suggest that these households do not
appear as poor on other economic dimensions as households with low but positive
incomes. Data users may want to consider restricting income analyses to the sample of
households with positive income (or income >= Rs. 1000) and adding separate analyses
for the negative or very low income households.
Wage and salary incomes were summed across all jobs of all individuals in the
household. Annual totals were estimated using the report of days worked for workers
paid daily wages or monthly salaries. Meals, housing benefits, and bonuses are included
in these totals. The public use file divides wage and salary incomes into three subtypes:
incsalary salary income is defined as income earned monthly or annually (rather than
daily); incagwage agricultural wages are the total daily wages of workers with
agricultural occupations; and incnonag nonagricultural wages are all other daily wages.

India Human Development Survey, Release 01

22

Remittances (incremit) were totaled from item 3.13 of the non-resident schedule (page 5
of the household questionnaire).
Nonfarm business income (incbus) was sometimes reported only as net income without
specifying gross income and expenses. Therefore, net business income does not always
equal gross business income minus expenses.
IHDS also collected data on several sources of cash and noncash support not included in
the total income estimate because these sources are not properly defined as income. For
example, about 2% of households sold some land in the previous year (in4a and in4b);
1% received insurance payments (in6); and about nine percent had received some
housing support such as latrines, stoves, or housing materials (in14 and in15). These
data are available in the IHDS files but are not included as income.

Poverty line
HH19 12. HH below poverty line

IHDS calculated household poverty based on the monthly consumption per capita (copc,
see Consumption) and the official Planning Commission poverty line as of 2005. poor is
a dichotomous (0/1) variable indicating whether the household is below this poverty line
or not. Users can calculate a poverty line ratio by dividing the monthly consumption per
capita (copc) by the official poverty line (pcpl).
The poverty line (pcpl) varies by state and urban/rural residence. It is based on 1970s
calculations of income needed to support minimal calorie consumption and has been
adjusted by price indexes since then. It is currently under revision.

HH3 1.13-15 Caste/religion 8cats

India has a vast array of jatis (castes) and religions. IHDS asked three questions about
the households caste and religion all from page 3 of the household questionnaire:
id12 records the caste of the household informant as reported to the interviewer (e.g.,
chamar, thakur, bania) however it was listed by the interviewer. IHDS staff is currently
working with these responses to produce a more limited set of categories that will be
released later.
id13 asked the household informant to classify these many responses into one of four
commonly used categories: Brahmin, OBC (Other Backward Classes), SC (Scheduled
Castes, dalits), and ST (Scheduled Tribes, adivasis), plus a residual Other category.
id14 asked the religion of the household head seven commonly reported categories
(Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, and Tribal), plus a residual Other
category and None.
For some overview purposes, it is useful to collapse religion and caste into a single
composite variable. (However, IHDS staff analyses have shown that using both religion
and caste separately is generally more informative when analyses permit caste
distinctions among non-Hindus are often substantial.) For an overview religion and caste
variable, IHDS includes groups8:

To combine caste and religion, this code follows these rules of precedence:
a) Dalits and Adivasis are coded as 4s and 5s, regardless of religion (id14);
b) Except for a above, Muslims, Jains, and Christians are coded as 6s, 7s, and 8s,
regardless of caste (id13);
c) Except for a above, Sikhs are coded as 3 if OBC, otherwise as 7;
d) Hindus are coded as 1-4 according to caste (id13).
Users can devise their own combination if they choose, but we repeat the advice to use
both religion and caste codes separately whenever possible.

Variables
Variable Names
All IHDS variables (except constructed variables) are named with a two letter code for
the section followed by the questions number (e.g., fm6a is from question 6a in the farm
section). Variables names are given in the questionnaire .pdf files and in the codebooks.

Variable Labels
Labels for variables record:
on which questionnaire the variable is located;
the page number of the questionnaire
the section number
the question number,
a very brief description.
For example HH3 1.13 Caste category , the variable label for id13, is from the household
questionnaire, page 3, section 1 (identification), question 13.

Codebooks
Detailed codebook available are separate files:
22626-0002-Codebook.pdf for the household file, and
22626-0001-Data.dta pdf for the individual file.

Questionnaires
The questionnaires are available as .pdf files from the website
(http://ihds.umd.edu/ihds/questionnaires.html):
