A recent attack ad by the National Republican Congressional Committee makes false claims

about where Lon Johnson lives, in a transparent attempt to distract voters from misleading
claims made by his opponent Jack Bergman about his own residency.
Lon Johnson, and his wife Julianna Smoot, live full-time in Kalkaska, Michigan. Johnson is the
5th generation of his family to live full-time in Kalkaska County. Johnson doesnt rent a condo or
an apartment in Detroit or elsewhere.
There is a paper trail proving Jack Bergman is lying to voters when he says he has lived fulltime in Watersmeet, Mich., since 2010. Here are the facts about Jack Bergman:
FACT: Lives at least part-time at the home he owns in St. Francisville, Louisiana and has done
so since he retired in 2009.
FACT: Upon retiring in 2009 in Louisiana, stated he and his wife planned to live out their
retirement days at their home in Louisiana. We quite honestly fell in love with New Orleans and
Louisiana. And it doesn't hurt that we don't get 10 feet of snow here in the winter.
FACT: Accepted a four-year Louisiana state government appointment in 2013 from the
Louisiana governor.
FACT: At a government meeting in 2013 stated that he was a proud resident of St.
Francisville.
FACT: Has listed his St. Francisville, La., address on government and other documents at least
seven times since 2010, including on his property in Watersmeet. More here and here.
FACT: On September 14, 2016, stated he is a snowbird.
FACT: Lied on his Personal Financial Disclosure Report to the US House of Representatives to
hide his Louisiana home.
Bergmans proposals show he doesnt understand whats important to people in the 1st District.
Bergman wants to privatize Social Security and Medicare and close VA health care centers and
clinics. Northern Michigan is home to 200,000 people who receive Social Security benefits,
168,000 Medicare beneficiaries, and 14 VA centers and clinics serving 64,000 veterans.
Johnson has consistently said as Congressman he will work to shore up Social Security and
Medicare so people can keep the benefits they worked a lifetime to earn, and he will work to fix
the problems with the VA so our veterans get the care we owe them for their service.
Bergman is not from Northern Michigan, and its clear he is not for Northern Michiganders.
Lon Johnson is from us, and he is for us.
