The overall survey data suggested a

discrepancy between what teachers
believed to be the purposes of social
studies and their definitions of citizenship,
which required clarification in the
interviews.

While the rank-order findings suggest a

high regard for the citizenship purpose of
social studies among the majority of
teacher who participated in the survey,
their majority orientation toward personally
responsible citizenship is at odds with the
intent of the state and national standard.

I Say
My notes, commentary
Its scary to think that all of our teachers arent
on the same page. These teachers are
supposed to be teaching tomorrows leaders
what it is to be a good and active citizen, but if
they dont know what social studies really
means, how can they rely a good message to
the youth.
How are the intent of the teachers against the
intent of the state and national standards? The
teachers personal beliefs in what makes a
citizen a good citizen should not interfere with
what the states and national think, its an
opinion. They can teach one way and believe
another.
In my mind, this is a perfect citizen. Many
people think that if you stand up for what you
believe in and protest, you are an anarchist and
you want to abolish the government. Many
people are too scared to actually participate in
protests. But, there needs to be a good

volunteering or just cleaning your lawn so

that your neighbors can appreciate you,
you know, having a job so that you
contribute to the tax base. You can be
productive in that way and still protest

that they fit into a larger picture, and that
they try to work within that.

balance. You need to continue to be a hard

working. Law-abiding citizen. You cant just
protest everything.

This article relates strongly to the other readings we have been given. I believe that you need a strong
belief in what you are teaching in order to teach it correctly. Social studies is the most important part of
the school system, because it goes deeper than just course material. Like we discussed in blog post 2,
we need to teach social studies to make our students the best citizens they can be. We are preparing
our future through our students. In response to the research, I find it to generally be good. Its good to
know where our teachers stand, so if its bad, we can work to make it better, thus making our future
leaders better.
