MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION

Revised OCTOBER 31, 2013

1.0 PURPOSE
This specification describes the work required to unload, assemble, install, and
align mechanical equipment. It can be used along with commercial terms and
conditions and the project schedule for bidding equipment installation projects.
This specification is suitable for most types of equipment installation. Not all
work is required for every project, so this general specification needs to be
updated for specific projects.
2.0 SUMMARY OF WORK
The work involves unloading and installing mechanical equipment more
completely described as______________________________________

The equipment status will be considered as mechanically complete at the end

of this work, and the equipment will be mechanically ready for start-up by others.
3.0 WORK INCLUDED
3.1 General
Contractor shall furnish all labor, supervision, cranes, material handling
equipment, testing equipment, consumables, scaffolding, and materials required
to unload, assemble, install, level, align, lubricate, and paint touch up of the
mechanical equipment. All work shall be done in accordance with project
drawings, manufacturers instructions, and the best construction work practices
applicable to the equipment involved.
The Contractor shall review the extent of work, type of work, and mechanical
features of the equipment to be installed. The Contractor is responsible for all
assembly required to make the equipment operable. This may include work not
shown on the drawings but which is a normal part of this type of equipment
installation.
The Contractor shall at all times keep the area clean from all trash, including

MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION

Revised OCTOBER 31, 2013

In addition to OSHA1926, Construction, all work shall comply with facility safety
standards.
3.2 Equipment Unloading and Temporary Storage
The Contractor shall receive, unload, and check all material and equipment
necessary to carry out the work. Contractor shall check packaging for damage
during transport and shall notify the Construction Manager of any problems.
In the event that the equipment cannot be moved immediately to the installation
location, the Contractor shall move the equipment to a storage location designated
by the Construction Manager. The Contractor shall provide blocks and tarpaulins to
protect the equipment during storage.
3.3 Equipment Installation
Foundations and anchor bolts supplied by others must be checked for correct
position and level and accepted before beginning work.
Grease or other protective coatings applied for protection of the equipment during
shipping and storage shall be removed, using suitable solvents or cleaners which
will not damage the finish of the components.
Contractors rigging plan must be approved in advance by the Construction
Manager. Refer to the equipment drawings for location of lifting lugs and rigging
points. Follow instructions for using slings and spreader bars when rigging and
lifting the equipment.
Equipment shall be installed true and plumb. Unless noted otherwise is
manufacturer's installation instructions, use tolerances as follows.
Location within 1/8 inch of horizontal and vertical centrelines
Height within 1/8 inch of required elevation.
Level check all four corners for level and squareness.
Use fasteners supplied with equipment where possible.

MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION

Revised OCTOBER 31, 2013
Bolts used to secure mechanical equipment to steel structures shall be installed
with one plain washer under the bolt head and one plain and one lock washer
under the nut. Mechanical equipment fixed with bolts embedded in masonry or
concrete shall use one plain washer and one lock washer under the nut.
Carry out final tightening of bolts after equipment is in place and properly aligned.
Unless a torque value is specified, bolts shall be tightened uniformly without over
stressing using the "Turn of Nut" method.
Bolt threads shall be lubricated and shall be free from rust, dirt, cracks, and nicks or
cuts on the threads before tightening.
During assembly and installation of equipment whenever work is not actually in
progress, all openings in equipment shall be covered with waterproof covers.
Before grouting is done by others, all base plates or equipment shall be properly set
on shims and filler plates, levelled, aligned and pulled down tight with the anchor
bolts. Unless the equipment is provided with jack screws, use shims to achieve the
tolerances specified in the manufacturer's installation instructions. Grout thickness
shall be a minimum of 1 inch or as shown on drawings.
Retighten equipment mounting bolts after equipment has been operated by others
for 8 hours.
3.4 Welding
Field welding shall be done by AWS certified welders.
Unless noted otherwise, all welds shall be continuous.
Welding shall not be done when the ambient temperature is lower than that
specified in the weld procedure specification or when surfaces are wet.
Surfaces to be welded shall be cleaned of scale, rust, grease or other debris that
would adversely affect the quality of the weld.
All welds shall be inspected visually for defects. All welds shall present a uniform
profile and be free of cracks, porosity, slag, and weld splatter.

3.5 Equipment and Bearing Lubrication
All equipment shall be lubricated in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
All bearings shall be checked to confirm that they have been factory lubricated. If
not, they must be lubricated in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements.
Rotating equipment which has been shipped dismantled for assembly in the field or
shipped with lubricants shall have the bearings cleaned, inspected and lubricated.
3.6 Shaft Alignment
Shaft alignments shall be measured with lasers or precision mechanical devices,
and tolerances shall comply with manufacturer's instructions. Unless noted
otherwise in manufacturers instructions, align shafts so they are parallel and in the
same horizontal and vertical planes with a maximum deviation of 0.002 inches.
Complete shaft alignment before coupling alignment. Unless noted otherwise in the
manufacturers instructions, the allowable misalignment between two couplings
shall not exceed .004 inches.
3.7 Belts and Chains
Prior to installation of belts or chains, parallel and horizontal alignment of shafts
shall be checked. The belt or chain must be properly tensioned before start-up as
described in manufacturers instructions. Ensure that belts run true in the grooves
and that chains run true over the sprockets.
3.8 Paint Touch Up
The Contractor shall apply touch up paint to any painted surface that becomes
scratched during installation. Where possible, touch up paint is supplied with the
equipment. If not, field paint shall be the same as original equipment paint.
