LGBT activists around the world

TRIUMEQ is a once-a-day pill used to treat HIV-1. TRIUMEQ should not be used by itself in some people. Take TRIUMEQ exactly as your
healthcare provider tells you.
Is it time for you? Ask your doctor.
APPROVED USES
TRIUMEQ is a prescription HIV-1 (Human Immunodeficiency Virus-type 1) medicine used alone or with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1
infection in adults. HIV-1 is the virus that causes AIDS. TRIUMEQ is not for use by itself in people who have or have had resistance to abacavir,
dolutegravir, or lamivudine. TRIUMEQ should not be used in children under the age of 18.
TRIUMEQ does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. You must keep taking HIV-1 medicines to control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
What is the most important information I should know about TRIUMEQ?
TRIUMEQ can cause serious side effects, including:
Serious allergic reactions (hypersensitivity reaction) that can cause death have
happened with TRIUMEQ and other abacavir-containing products. Your risk of
this allergic reaction to abacavir is much higher if you have a gene variation called
HLA-B*5701. Your healthcare provider can determine with a blood test if you have this
gene variation. If you get symptoms from 2 or more of the following groups
while taking TRIUMEQ, call your healthcare provider right away: 1. fever;
2. rash; 3. nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach pain; 4. generally ill feeling,
extreme tiredness, or achiness; 5. shortness of breath, cough, or sore throat.
Your pharmacist will give you a Warning Card with a list of these symptoms. Carry
this Warning Card with you at all times.
If you stop taking TRIUMEQ because of an allergic reaction, never take
TRIUMEQ or any other abacavir- or dolutegravir-containing medicines again.
If you take TRIUMEQ or any other abacavir-containing medicine again after you have
had an allergic reaction, within hours you may get life-threatening symptoms
that may include very low blood pressure or death. If you stop TRIUMEQ for any
other reason, even for a few days, and you are not allergic to TRIUMEQ, talk with your
healthcare provider before taking it again. Taking TRIUMEQ again can cause a serious
allergic or life-threatening reaction, even if you never had an allergic reaction to it
before. If your healthcare provider tells you that you can take TRIUMEQ again,
start taking it when you are around medical help or people who can call a
healthcare provider if you need one.
A buildup of acid in your blood (lactic acidosis). Lactic acidosis can happen in
some people who take TRIUMEQ. This serious medical emergency can cause death.
Call your healthcare provider right away if you feel very weak or tired; have
unusual muscle pain; have trouble breathing; have stomach pain with nausea and
vomiting; feel cold, especially in your arms and legs; feel dizzy/light-headed; or have
a fast/irregular heartbeat.
Serious liver problems can happen in people who take TRIUMEQ. In some cases,
these serious liver problems can lead to death. You may be more likely to get
lactic acidosis or serious liver problems if you are female, very overweight
(obese), or have been taking nucleoside analogue medicines for a long time.
Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any of the following signs
or symptoms:
yellow skin, or the white part of the eyes turns yellow (jaundice); dark urine; lightcolored stools; loss of appetite for several days or longer; nausea; pain, aching, or
tenderness on the right side of your stomach area

Worsening of hepatitis B virus in people who have HIV-1 infection. If you have
HIV-1 and hepatitis B virus (HBV), your HBV may get worse (flare-up) if you stop taking
TRIUMEQ. A flare-up is when your HBV suddenly returns in a worse way than before.
Worsening liver disease can be serious and may lead to death. Do not stop taking
TRIUMEQ without first talking to your healthcare provider, so he or she can monitor
your health.
Resistant hepatitis B virus. If you have HIV-1 and hepatitis B, the hepatitis B virus
can change (mutate) during your treatment with TRIUMEQ and become harder to treat
(resistant).
Use with interferon and ribavirin-based regimens. If youre taking TRIUMEQ
and interferon, with or without ribavirin, tell your healthcare provider about any new
symptoms. Worsening of liver disease that has caused death has happened in people
infected with both HIV-1 and hepatitis C who were taking antiretroviral medicines and
interferon.
Who should not take TRIUMEQ?
Do not take TRIUMEQ if you:
have the HLA-B*5701 gene variation
are allergic to abacavir, dolutegravir, or any of the ingredients in TRIUMEQ
take dofetilide (Tikosyn)
have liver problems
What are other possible side effects of TRIUMEQ?
People with a history of hepatitis B or C virus may have an increased risk of developing
new or worsening changes in certain liver tests during treatment with TRIUMEQ.
Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your liver function before and during
treatment with TRIUMEQ.
When you start taking HIV-1 medicines, your immune system may get stronger and
begin to fight infections that have been hidden in your body for a long time. Tell your
healthcare provider right away if you start having new symptoms after you start taking
TRIUMEQ.
Changes in body fat can happen in people who take HIV-1 medicines.
Some HIV-1 medicines, including TRIUMEQ, may increase your risk of heart attack.
The most common side effects of TRIUMEQ include: trouble sleeping, headache,
tiredness
These are not all the possible side effects of TRIUMEQ. Tell your healthcare provider if
you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.
Important Safety Information continued on next page.

You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Serious liver problems can happen in people who take TRIUMEQ. In some cases, these
serious liver problems can lead to death. Your liver may become large (hepatomegaly) and
you may develop fat in your liver (steatosis). Call your HCP right away if you get any of the
following signs or symptoms of liver problems:
your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice)

Slaying of Dodds linked
to robberies targeting
trans women

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.

lchibbaro@washblade.com
D.C. police on Monday said they
arrested a second suspect in the July 4
shooting death of transgender woman
Deeniquia Dee Dee Dodds.
The arrest of Jalonte Little, 26, of
Southeast D.C. on a charge of rst-degree
felony murder while armed in connection
with Dodds killing came four days after
police arrested District Heights, Md.,
resident Shareem Hall, 22, on the same
charge in the Dodds murder case.
Littles arrest came three days after
police led a 13-page adavit in D.C.
Superior Court in support of Halls arrest
that discloses that Hall, Little and at least
two other suspects were implicated in a
series of armed street robberies against
eight transgender women, including
Dodds, in two dierent locations in the
early morning hours of July 4.
The other two suspects have not been
identied.
Three of the trans women were robbed
at 4th and K St., N.E. about 3:40 a.m. by
three male suspects carrying pistols and
another four were robbed in the same
location a short time later by four male
suspects also brandishing pistols, the
adavit cites witnesses as saying.
Several of the victims and witnesses
told police they saw some of the suspects
leave and enter a white Pontiac vehicle
that belonged to Little.
In the incident involving Dodds, the
police adavit says a witness told police
homicide detectives the witness saw
Dodds struggling to break away from two
men on the 200 block of Division Avenue,
N.E. shortly before 3 a.m. on July 4.
Seconds later, the adavit says, the
witness heard a single gunshot and saw
a female later identied as Dodds fall to
the ground as the two men ran from the
scene heading north on Division Avenue.
The adavit says a second witness also
reported hearing a single gunshot and
seeing Dodds fall to the ground as two
male suspects ran from the scene.
Dodds, who was found unconscious and
suering from a gunshot wound to the
neck, died July 13 in Prince Georges County
Hospital Center after having been on life
support since the day of the shooting.
The arrest adavit says homicide
detectives obtained their rst break in the

case that enabled them to link Little and Hall

to the Dodds murder about 6 a.m. on July
4, about three hours after Dodds was shot.
According to the adavit, at that time
ocers with the departments Sixth
District responded to second sighting
call to a 7-Eleven store at 950 Eastern
Ave., N.E. from a transgender woman
who had been robbed at gunpoint on
June 28 outside the same 7-Eleven.
The adavit says when the ocers
arrived the woman pointed to a white
Pontiac vehicle she said her assailant
had emerged from at the time he robbed
her on June 28. A short time later, the
adavit says, detectives who were in the
area investigating the shooting of Dodds
observed the trans woman shouting and
pointing to a suspect who had just entered
the vehicle in question and drove away.
Ocers followed the vehicle and stopped
it, the adavit says. Defendant Little was
the sole occupant, says the adavit.
But the most important discovery came
while police processed Littles arrest.
They discovered he had attached to his
ankle a GPS monitoring device that he
was required to wear as a condition for
his release in an unrelated arrest.
Every minute the GPS device provides
a data point for identifying the location of
the device, the adavit says. Your aant
has reviewed the records associated with
the GPS worn by defendant Little, it says.
According to these GPS records,
defendant Little was in the area of the
June 28, 2016 armed robbery at the time
it occurred, was in the area of the July 4,
2016 shooting of the decedent [Dodds] at
the time it occurred, and was in the area
of the July 4, 2016 armed robbery of the
complainants at 4th and K Streets at the
time it occurred, the adavit states.

Former D.C. resident

Franklin DellAquila dies at 62
Franklin S. DellAquila, who lived in
D.C. beginning in the 1970s, where
he worked for the U.S. Secret Service,
owned a mens clothing store and
later became a hairstylist, died Aug.
8 at a hospice in Phoenixville, Pa. He
was 62.
His longtime friend Tony Amato said
the cause of death was complications
associated with multiple sclerosis.
DellAquila lived and worked in D.C.
for close to 30 years before returning
around 2000 to his hometown of
Royersford, Pa. He was well known
in gay community circles in D.C. and
FRANKLIN S. DELLAQUILA
Rehoboth Beach, Del., according to
Amato and others who knew him.
Amato said DellAquila returned to Royersford to help his ailing mother and a
disabled brother. While there, he changed careers to become a mail carrier with
the U.S. Postal Service where he worked for 10 years until his recent retirement.
He was born in nearby Pottstown, Pa., where he graduated in 1971 from St.
Pius High School, according to a write-up prepared by family members.
Franklin enjoyed music, loved to travel, and was an avid gardener, and
enjoyed listening to Celtic music, the write-up says.
Steve Elkins, executive director of CAMP Rehoboth, an LGBT community
center in Rehoboth Beach, said he rst met DellAquila in the 1970s while Elkins
worked at the White House during the administration of President Jimmy Carter
and DellAquila was assigned to the presidential detail with the Secret Service.
Ill never forget giving a friend a tour of the West Wing and seeing a silver
haired agent, although he was in his early twenties, and nding out later it was
Frank, said Elkins.
Elkins said he and his partner, Murray Archibald, became good friends of
DellAquilas when Elkins and Archibald moved to Rehoboth Beach and helped
found CAMP Rehoboth.
Frank was a long-time member of CAMP Rehoboth and a host of the annual
Sundance Benet, said Elkins, who noted that DellAquila became a regular
weekend visitor to Rehoboth.
We were all very lucky to have known him, Amato said. He was a great
person, very generous and caring and a true friend. He had a lot of friends.
DellAquila is survived by his sister Diane Simon of North Wales, Pa.; a brother,
John DellAquila of Phoenixville, Pa.; several nieces and nephews; and many
friends. Family members said a gift in his memory could be made to the ARC, a
D.C.-based advocacy organization for people with intellectual and developmental
disabilities at thearc.org.
A memorial celebration of DellAquilas life is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8, at
4 p.m. at the Horizon House Condominium Community Room, 1300 Army Navy
Dr., Arlington, Va. Amato, whos hosting the event, asks that those planning to
attend RSVP at 703-892-6286.

Lesbian trooper sues Md. police over bias complaint

A lesbian state trooper assigned to the Maryland State Police barracks in Cumberland,
Md., has led a lawsuit accusing supervisors and co-workers of subjecting her to
discrimination, retaliation, and a hostile work environment based on her sexual
orientation and gender.
Chelsea Raley, who holds the rank of Trooper First Class, states in her lawsuit, which
was led in federal court in Baltimore on May 26, that the alleged discrimination against
her began in June 2014, about two months after she was assigned to the Cumberland
Barracks in Allegany County.
As the only female and only homosexual State Trooper in the Cumberland Barracks,
Raley has been discriminated against, retaliated against, and made to work in a hostile
work environment, the lawsuit states.

LO CA L N E W S
The lawsuit says the alleged discriminatory actions by the State Police violate Title
VII of the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bans discrimination based on gender; and
violate the Maryland Fair Employment Practices Act, which, among other things, bans
employment discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Maryland State Police, through its managers, repeatedly discriminated against Raley,
at least in part, because of her sexual orientation by assigning Raley more work than
her colleagues, writing Raley up for minor infractions that Raleys colleagues were not
written up for, target[ing] Raley, subjecting Raley to higher scrutiny and oversight, and
allowing Raleys personal dating life to be discussed, scrutinized, and made a joke of in
the work place, the lawsuit says.
A spokesperson for the Maryland Attorney Generals oce, which is representing the
State Police in court in connection with the lawsuit, did not respond to a request from
the Washington Blade for comment.
Records at the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, where the lawsuit
is pending, show that the State Police requested and was granted by the court an
extension of time to le its response to the lawsuit. The records show that U.S. District
Court Judge James Bredar set a deadline of Nov. 4 for State Police to le its response.
Raley couldnt immediately be reached for comment.

Fired GWU coach accused of

trying to out athletic director

George Washington University announced on Sept. 17 that it has red controversial

mens basketball coach Mike Lonergan following an investigation triggered by a
Washington Post expose in which players said Lonergan told them the G.W. athletic
director, Patrick Nero, masturbated in his oce while watching videos of the players
practicing.
Players said Lonergan shared his distaste for Nero in a manner both inappropriate
and outlandish, the Post reported in a July 21 story. Five current and former players
said Lonergan told players Nero requested the practice tapes so he could masturbate
while viewing them in his oce, the Post story said.
The players said Lonergan also told them Nero had engaged in a sexual relationship
with a member of the team, the story reported. Players said they found those
comments to be shocking and oensive, with no grounding in reality, the Post reported.
Nero and university ocials declined to comment on the Posts revelations at the
time the Post published its story. But Neros attorney, Debra Katz, who did not respond
to a request by the Blade for comment, told the Post that Nero has always been a strong
advocate for the welfare of student athletes.
He will not be deterred from advocating for students by false and reprehensible
remarks, the Post quoted her as saying.
In addition to reporting on Lonergans reported remarks about Nero, the Post story
reported that at least 13 mens basketball players left the team and the university during
the past ve years because of what those who knew them said was bizarre and abusive
behavior by Lonergan toward his players.
The university recently conducted a thorough investigation into allegations
concerning Coach Lonergan, G.W. Provost Forrest Maltzman said in a statement
released on Sept. 17. The university concluded that Coach Lonergan had engaged in
conduct inconsistent with the universitys values, Maltzman said in his statement.

White named newest D.C. Council member

The D.C. Democratic State Committee voted on Sept. 15 to name Robert White as
the temporary replacement for D.C. Council member Vincent Orange (D-At-Large), who
resigned from his seat in August to take a job as president of the citys Chamber of
Commerce.
White defeated Orange in the D.C. Democratic primary in June to become the
Democratic nominee for the at-large Council seat. Most political observers consider
White, a longtime LGBT rights supporter, to be the strong favorite to win the Democratic
at-large seat in the Nov. 8 general election.
Incumbent Council member David Grosso (I-At-Large) is running for re-election to an
at-large seat reserved under the City Charter for a non-majority party candidate which,
in D.C., means a non-Democrat.
Four other non-Democrats are competing for the two seats in the November election.
They include independent John Cheeks, Statehood Green Party candidate G. Lee Aikin,
Republican Carolina Celnik, and Libertarian Party candidate Matthew Klokel.
Under the citys election law, the candidatesreceiving the two highest vote counts will
be declared the winners of the two seats.

Clinton underscores LGBT rights to win over Millennials

For a Democrat,
low support among
young voters
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
With polls showing a decline in support
among Millennials, Hillary Clinton is
underscoring LGBT rights to keep young
votersfrom straying from the Democratic
presidential ticketon Election Day.
Clinton referenced the importance of
continuing the LGBT rights advancementsseen
under the Obama administration during a
speech Monday intended to rally Millennials
at Temple University.
Contrasting her views with Donald
Trumps demonization of minority groups,
Clinton oered a vision of America
eliminating the barriers they face. Along
with black people who think their lives
are disposable, immigrants who fear
deportation and young men and women
sexually assaulted on college campuses,
Clinton said there are too many young
LGBT Americans bullied.
You arent and you shouldnt be
satised with the progress weve made,
Clinton said. You should keep wanting
to right wrongs and ght for justice and
dignity for all.
Throughout her speech, Clinton
articulated plans aimed at helping
Millennials, including reforms allowing
renancing of student debt, making public
college tuition free to those who cant
aord it and debt free for everyone and
investing in climate change technology.
Clinton also discussed her history at
length. At the time Trumps real estate
company was allegedly denying housing to
black and Puerto Rican applicants, Clinton
reminded the audience that as a young
civil rights lawyer, she sought to make lives
for minorities and children better as a law
student, and then as a lawyer, under her
mentor, Childrens Defense Fund founder
Marian Wright Edelman.
I learned that to drive real progress, you
have to change both hearts and laws, so
we gathered evidence, we built a coalition
and our work helped convince Congress to
ensure access to education for all students
with disabilities, Clinton said. And that
experience turned me into a lifelong
advocate for children and families.
This work, Clinton said, made people
surprised, and even threatened by
the idea of an activist rst lady when
her husband was elected president,
but she was undaunted and, after her
unsuccessful attempt at passing universal
health care, shepherded into law the
Childrens Health Insurance Program.
Later in her speech, Clinton made a

veiled reference to LGBT people when

she presented a vision for the future and
said theres no doubt in my mind that
young people have more at stake in this
election than any other age group.
We will say we build a future where all
our children have the opportunity to live up
to their God-given potential no matter who
they are, where theyre from, what they
look like or who they love, Clinton said.
The LGBT components of Clintons
speech were similar to the reference to
LGBT rights Tim Kaine made on NBCs
Meet the Press Sunday when askedabout
the dwindling support for the Democratic
presidential ticketamong Millennials.
Do you believe in immigration reform
or dont you? Kaine said. We do,
Millennials do, Donald Trump doesnt. Do
you believe in LGBT equality or dont you?
We do, Millennials do, Donald Trump
doesnt. And nally, do you have a plan to
deal with college aordability? We have
one. Millennials need one.
Clinton may need additional support
from Millennials to pull o a win in the
general election. Polls demonstrate
many young voters are likely to support
Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.
(Although that might change as a result
of his continued gaes, such as saying he
was glad nobody got hurt duringattacks
in New York City that injured 25 people and
stabbings in Minnesota that injured eight.)
As reported by NBC News, a national
Quinnipiac poll showed Clinton has 31
percent support among voters 18-to-34
years old, giving her a slim 5-point lead in
this age group over Trump. Thats down
from thesupport of 48 percent of youth
and the 24-point lead over Trump she
enjoyedlast month.
The dip in support among Millennials
should make Clinton nervous as the
presidential nomineefor a party that relies
on youth to win at the polls. Her numbers
are far dierent from those of President
Obama. In 2012, Obama won voters below

the ofage 30 by 23 points nationally.

Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg, director of
Tisch Colleges Center for Information

& Research on Civic Learning (CIRCLE), a

non-partisan research center on youth
engagement, said emphasis on LGBT
rights is a good way for Clinton to shore
up support among Millennials.
Acknowledging that Millennials are
diverse in many ways and developing
policies and practices that communicate
a culture of care for youth with diverse
gender identities and sexual orientations
could appeal to a large number
of young people who may feel that
issues important to them are being
neglected,Kawashima-Ginsberg said.
As Kawashima-Ginsberg pointed out,
a Fusion poll last year found half of
Millennials think of gender as a spectrum,
not binary.Youths who are also whitewere
most likely to support the idea of a nonbinary gender system. Fifty-ve percent
of white Millennials said gender is on a
spectrum, compared to 47 percent of
Latinos and 32 percent ofblack youth.

HUD bars anti-trans bias

in homeless shelters
The Department of Housing & Urban Development madenal on Tuesdaya
rule requiring equal access for transgender people in federally funded
homelessshelters.
HUD Secretary Julin Castro said in a statement the new rule is another
important step to ensure full acceptance of transgender and gender nonconforming individuals in the programs HUD supports.
This new rule will ensure equal access to the very programs that help to prevent
homelessness for persons who are routinely forced to choose between being
placed in facilities against their gender identity or living on our streets, Castro said.
As explained in the 73-page rule, the change requires federally funded
providers operating single-sex projects to provide transgender individuals with
access consistent with their gender identity to programs, benets, services and
accommodations withoutasking them to provide documentation orsubjecting
them to intrusive questioning about their anatomy. The change goes into eect
30 days from its scheduled publication in the Federal Register on Wednesday.
Julianna Gonen, policy director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights,
praisedHUD for making the rule nal, calling it such clear guidance to shelters
and for arming the equality and dignity of transgender people.
This new rule ensures that no transgender person will be denied shelter simply
because of who they are and that transgender women, in particular, will no longer
be forced to choose between being housed with men or going without shelter,
Gonen said. This is a huge step forward for the transgender community and will
empower transgender individuals who need shelter to stand up for their rights.
The rule, initially proposed last last year, builds on an earlier 2012 HUD rule
barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or
marital status in federally funded housing programs. However, HUDat the time
declined to adopt a national policy on the placement of transgender people
in homeless shelters, deciding to monitor its programs to determine if more
guidance was necessary.
The nal rule says HUD determined the 2012 change did not adequately
address the signicant barriers facing transgender and gender non-conforming
persons and found they continue to experience signicant violence, harassment
and discrimination in attempting to access programs, benets, services and
accommodations.

Obama urges help for refugees in nal U.N. speech

Trudeau champions LGBT
rights in remarks
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
UNITED NATIONS President Obama
this week urged the world to do more to
help refugees and migrants.
We have to open our hearts and do
more to help refugees who are desperate
for a home, he said in his nal speech to
the U.N. General Assembly.
The U.N. Refugee Agency says that more
than 65 million people have been forcibly
displaced from their homes around the
world. The International Organization for
Migration notes 3,212 migrants have died
or gone missing in the Mediterranean Sea
since the beginning of the year.
National Security Advisor Susan Rice
announced on Aug. 29 the administration
had met its goal of allowing 10,000 Syrians to
resettle in the U.S. during the 2016 scal year.
The White House has pledged to allow an
additional 85,000 Syrians to resettle in the
U.S. during the 2017 scal year. It remains
unclear whether any of these slots have
been specically set aside to LGBT Syrians
who have ed the so-called Islamic State
and other Islamic militant groups.
Obama on Tuesday is scheduled to
host a refugee summit on the sidelines of
the U.N. General Assembly.
We must reject any forms of
fundamentalism or racism or a belief
in ethnic superiority that makes our
traditional identities irreconcilable with
modernity, he said during his speech.
Donald Trump in the wake of the
June 12 massacre at the Pulse nightclub
in Orlando, Fla., reiterated his call to
temporarily ban Muslims from entering
the U.S. He also said he would suspend
immigration when there is a proven
history of terrorism against the United
States, Europe and our allies.
Trump said in a speech he gave at
an Ohio university last month that his
administration would require potential
immigrants to the U.S. to pass an
ideological test that would include
LGBT-specic questions. He also called
for banning immigrants from some of
the most dangerous and most volatile
regions of the world that have a history of
exporting terrorism.
Obama spoke to the U.N. General
Assembly less than 24 hours after
authorities
arrested
Ahmad
Khan
Rahami in connection with bombings in
Manhattans Chelsea neighborhood and
in New Jersey over the weekend.
Hillary Clinton on Monday criticized
Trump over his irresponsible and
reckless rhetoric in response to the

responsibility as demagogic. Obama did

not specically mention the Republican
billionaire by name in his speech to the
U.N. General Assembly.
Our identities do not have to be dened
by putting someone else down, said Obama.
Outgoing U.N. Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon told the U.N. General Assembly
on Tuesday that refugees and migrants
face hatred and Muslims are being
targeted by stereotyping and suspicion
that have haunting echoes of the past.
He did not specically reference Trump
during his speech.
I say to political leaders and candidates:
Do not engage in the cynical and dangerous
political math that says you add votes by
dividing people and multiplying fear, said
Ban. The world must stand up to lies and
distortions of truth and reject all forms of
discrimination.
Both Ban and Obama made broad
references to gay rights during their
respective speeches.
I have been a proud defender of the
rights of all people, regardless of ethnicity,
religion or sexual orientation, said Ban.
This years U.N. General Assembly took
place less than three months after the
U.N. Human Rights Council approved
a resolution that calls for the creation
of the organizations rst-ever position
to combat anti-LGBT discrimination
around the world. Ban and Obama spoke
hours after the Botswana government
announced that it had deported Steven
Anderson, an anti-LGBT pastor from
Tempe, Ariz., from the country.
In remote corners of the world citizens
are demanding respect for the dignity of all
people, no matter their gender or race or
religion or disability or sexual orientation,
said Obama. Those who deny others

Canadian
Prime
Minister
Justin
Trudeau meanwhile criticized politicians
and candidates who exploit fear.
Every single day, we need to choose
hope over fear and diversity over division,
he said in his speech to the U.N. General
Assembly. Fear has never fed a family
nor created a single job. And those who
exploit it will never solve the problems
that have created such anxiety.
Trudeau told reporters during a press
conference after his speech that his
comments were not specically directed
towards Donald Trump. He said Canadians
saw divisive politics . . . up close and
personal ahead of last Octobers elections
in which Trudeau defeated then-Prime
Minister Stephen Harper.
We had a political campaign that featured
Islamophobia and divisive personal attacks
pandering to fear and insecurity like we do

see elsewhere around the world these days,

said Trudeau.
What we found in Canada is people are
better than divisive politicians think they
are, he added. And by appealing to peoples
better angels, by drawing people together
rather than stoking fears and anxieties we
are actually able to create a government
that is focused on strengthening the middle
class to allay those fears and anxieties and
demonstrate a positive engagement with the
world.
Trudeau this summer marched in Pride
parades in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
Refugees are people with the same
hopes and dreams as our own citizens, said
Trudeau in his speech to the U.N. General
Assembly.
Trudeau on Tuesday also attended a
refugee summit on the sidelines of the
U.N. General Assembly that President
Obama hosted.

He also said potential immigrants to

LGBT-specic questions.
This guy plainly said hes going to put
a cap on Muslims entering the United
States, said Tarek Zeidan, a Lebanese
LGBT activist who is currently studying
at Harvard University.
Tommy Chen of Rainbow Action,
an advocacy group in Hong Kong, told
the Blade this week that the Obama
administrations eorts to promote
LGBT rights abroad have had a direct
impact in the former British colony. He
expressed doubts that these policies
would continue if Trump were elected.
As a community we have strong doubts
about Donald Trumps implementation
of policies that will eect the LGBT
community, in the U.S., and its eects
around the world, said Chen.
Juana Mora, an independent Cuban
LGBT activist, was far more blunt.
Donald Trump would be a disaster
for the LGBTI community, she told the
Blade this week from Havana.
Mora said a Trump presidency would
also have an adverse impact on the
normalization of relations between the
U.S. and Cuba that Obama announced in
2014. Maykel Gonzlez, a journalist and
independent LGBT activist who lives in the
Cuban city of Sagua la Grande, agreed.
The process of normalizing relations
began with the Democrats, Gonzlez
told the Blade. We all believe on the
island that this would continue better if
the Democrats maintain the president.
An activist in Mauritania with whom
the Blade spoke said Trump could bolster
the countrys LGBT rights movement.
Mauritania is among the handful
of countries in which homosexuality
remains punishable by death. The

activist with whom the Blade spoke said

Trump could help address long-standing
racial inequalities in the country.
Im with Trump, said the activist.
Activists with whom the Blade has
previously spoken have pointed out
Clinton delivered her landmark gay
rights are human rights speech
in Geneva in 2011. The Obama
administration on the same day directed
government agencies that implement
U.S. foreign policy to promote LGBT
rights abroad.
Trumps running mate, Indiana Gov.
Mike Pence, opposed these eorts
when he was a member of the House of
Representatives.
We,
along
with
many
other
organizations, have welcomed the
proactive and positive role taken by the
current U.S. administration to advance
LGBTI equality in the world, ILGAEurope told the Blade this week in a
statement. We can only hope that the
next U.S. administration, whatever its
make-up, continues to support LGBTI
equality, both in word and deed.
Francisco Robledo, director of the
Workplace Alliance for Diversity and
Inclusion in Mexico City, said he remains
condent the U.S. would continue to
promote LGBT rights abroad if Clinton
were elected. He told the Blade these
eorts would have a positive impact
around the world.
The dominoes would fall rapidly in Mexico
and in other countries, said Robleado.
Mora agreed.
The
LGBTI
community
would
continue to have successes in its social
struggles for the recognition of our
rights, she said.
Erick Martnez, a Honduran LGBT
rights activist, noted Clintons response
to the 2009 coup that toppled thenPresident Manuel Zelaya has been
criticized. He nevertheless said the
former secretary of state would do
more to promote global LGBT rights
than Trump.
She would maintain the work that
President Obama has developed, said
Martnez.
Clinton continues to face criticism
from Trump and Republican lawmakers
over her handling of the 2012 raid on
the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya,
that left U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris
Stevens and three other Americans
dead.
A gay activist in Benghazi told the
Blade that many Libyans dont like
Clinton because of the incident. Zeidan
said many people in the Middle East
also distrust the former secretary of
state because of her hawkish foreign
policy and her relationships with Egypt
and other countries in which LGBT

people continue to face persecution.

Clinton last week applauded the
announcement that the U.S. would
provide the Israeli military with $38
billion over the next decade.
Americas commitment to Israels
security must always remain rock-solid
and unwavering, she said in a statement.

Zeidan told the Blade that many

people in the Middle East remain critical
of U.S. involvement in human rights and
other issues within the region.
With a Hillary win, the programs
that we have seen set in place and
the positions . . . will likely continue,
he said.

LGBT Brits nervously await

U.S. election outcome
LGBT advocates inGreat Britain arenervously watching as America picksits
45th president. With President Obama extremely popular across the Pond,
will Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump continue to improve the trans-Atlantic
relationship, or will we see a return to the Dubya years?
Ah Obama. Hes great isnt he? Makes everyone jealous of their own leaders,
said Adam Beral, a trustee for a U.K. LGBT helpline, I think hes moved our
relationship into a more professional sphere very dierent to the pally you
scratch my back, Ill scratch yours of Blair and Bush.
Were also a lot less slavish to America now, added David Ward, a young
leader for Stonewall, a U.K. LGBT charity.
Trump has already clashed with London Mayor Sadiq Kahn, when he said he
would block Muslims from entering the U.S. Kahn, the rst Muslim mayor of a
major Western city, was quick to point out the ban would include him, and was
less than impressed with Trumps promise of exceptions.
This isnt just about me its about my friends, my family and everyone who
comes from a background similar to mine, anywhere in the world, the mayor
said in a statement.
Recently, while touring North America, Kahn accused Trump of playing into
the hands of Daesh and so-called ISIS.
As someone in Sadiqs very diverse former constituency and who voted for
him, I was angry about what Trump said and think all hes doing is causing a
divided States with a warped perception of our country, said Ward, referring to
Trumps false claims Islamication had created no-go zones in England.
Beral also took these comments personally.
His attitude to the mayor of London my mayor is hardly surprising, he said.
What is surprising is that someone who airs such views publicly is competing
for the top job in America. It makes us over here wonder what the fuck is going
on in your country!
The British public seems rmly against Trump, branding his comments about
minorities as hate speech, with 586,933 people signing a petition to have him
banned from the United Kingdom.
But even Democrat Hillary Clinton, with her positive human rights record, has
hardly overwhelmed the British public.
Hillary seems nice but theres just something about her, I dont see her being
a strong gure head, said London resident Pete Spake.
Beral shared a similar sentiment.
Im not a fan of either of them to be honest. I have a huge amount of respect
for Clinton insomuch as I think shes an excellent politician, but I disagree with
many of her views, he said.
Though it is unlikely that British opinion will have any eect on the election,
some say the results of the recent E.U. referendum should act as a warning.
Cornelius Sealey, an American living and working in London during the Brexit
vote, is determined his country wont make the same mistake.
I continue to tell my friends back in the States to learn from the Brexit vote.
People never thought it could happen, didnt turn out to vote and it passed, he
said.
Its kinda scary that a candidate like Trump is doing so well, concluded Ward.
But as we have seen over here with our EU referendum, sometimes the worst
outcome can happen. Learn from us!

D.C. Log Cabin weighs

Trump endorsement
Log Cabin Republicans of D.C. was scheduled to discuss and possibly vote
Wednesday night, Sept. 21, on whether to recommend that the national Log
Cabin Republicans organization endorse GOP presidential candidate Donald
Trump.
Under the national LGBT Republican groups bylaws, state and local chapters
are not authorized to endorse presidential candidates but instead are
encouraged to make recommendations to the national group on whether such
an endorsement should be made.
Chris Allen, president of D.C. Log Cabin Republicans, said the groups board
met on Aug. 22 and eight of the nine board members present voted no on
recommending a Trump endorsement by the national Log Cabin group.
Since that vote, one board member has changed his mind and plans to vote
in the armative at the meeting on Wednesday, Allen told the Washington
Blade. But he also pointed out that under D.C. Log Cabins bylaws, a two-thirds
majority vote by the general membership is needed to make or recommend an
endorsement if the board has not rst approved such an endorsement.
Allen said he expects a lively discussion over the Trump endorsement question.
We have several members who are gung-ho Trump supporters, he said.
The board for the national Log Cabin Republicans organization, meanwhile,
is scheduled to meet in Washington on Sept. 28 hours before the group holds
its annual Spirit of Lincoln national dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Former
Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at
the dinner.
There is no requirement that a vote [on a Trump endorsement] be taken at
that time, said Gregory Angelo, Log Cabin nationals executive director. The
board may hold the vote, or move to postpone a nal vote until later this year,
Angelo told the Blade in an email.
Angelo declined a request by the Blade for a list of Log Cabin chapters that
have recommended for or against a Trump endorsement.
Our survey of LCR chapters is an internal document designed to give the LCR
National Board of Directors perspective on where our membership stands, he
said. At the present time we have no plans to make results public or share them
with the press.

thats what were working on forthe next

administration as well.
Although the person tapped to ll
a Cabinet-level position in the Clinton
administration could be virtually any highprole LGBT individual who has supported
the Democratic Party, one name observers
keep mentioning is former Houston Mayor
Annise Parker, whos now co-chair of the
Democratic National Committees LGBT
advisory body.
Malcolm Lazin, executive director
of the Philadelphia-based Equality
Forum, said Parker certainly would be a
contender based on her record as mayor
of the nations fourth largest city and her
position within the DNC.
Certainly one would not expect her to
be the secretary of state or the secretary
of treasury, but certainly there are a
number of other positions that certainly
she would be well qualied, Lazin said.
Clearly, everything from health and
human services, to HUD, Commerce. So
there are a number of dierent agencies
where she certainly has the type of
background and political sophistication
that would qualify her.
Lazin said nobody knows anything
specic about whether Parker or any
other LGBT person has been suggested
as a Cabinet-level position for Clinton,
but LGBT advocates who spoke at the
Equality Forums panels at the Democratic
National Committee saidthe appointment
would beamong the primary asksof the
next administration.
Certainly people on those panels were
people who were prominent within our
movement, and certainly prominent within
the Democratic Party, and people who
have relationships with Secretary Clinton,
Lazin said. I think across the board in
terms of when that issue was discussed, I
think there was a clear consensus that was
one of the primary asks.
Other names that emerged as potential
Cabinet picks are Rep. Sean Patrick
Maloney (D-N.Y.), former New York City
Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Sen.
Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Darren

Walker, president of the New York-based

Ford Foundation.
Another name that emerged is John
Berry, who currently serves as U.S.
ambassador to Australia and formerly
was head of the U.S. Oce of Personnel
Management. For a time, Berry was
thought to have been a potential pickas
head of the Department of the Interior
before Interior Secretary Sally Jewell was
chosen and he was appointed as a U.S.
ambassador.
But what happens if Trump wins the
election? Lazin said the question of
whether Trump would appoint an LGBT
Cabinet member is interesting because
in a 2000 interview with The Advocate,
the candidate said hed support adding
sexual-orientation protections to the Civil
Rights Act of 1964. Trump hasnt said
during this election cycle whether that
remains his position.
In June, the Equality Forum sent via
certied mail a letter to then-top ocials
with the Trump campaign asking whether
Trump supports the Equality Act, which
would add LGBT protections to the federal
non-discrimination law, but Lazin said the
organization received no response.
Certainly one would hope that Mr.
Trump would have an openly gay person
in his Cabinet, but given his non-response
to this question, I would say that would
be unlikely rather than likely, Lazin said.
Last week, the Hungton Post
reported PayPal founder Peter Thiel, a
Trump supporter who declared he was
proud to be gay at the Republican
National Convention, was promised an
appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court
by the Republican presidential nominee,
citing sources close to Thiel. But the
Trump campaign said there was no truth
to that claim, as did a Thiel spokesperson.
Neither
the
Clinton
nor
the
Trump campaigns responded to the
Washington Blades request over
the past two weeks to comment on
whether the candidates would be open
to appointing an openly LGBT Cabinet
member in their administrations.

Symposium focuses on anti-LGBT violence

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

FOR 33 YEARS

More than 50 people attended a symposium on Sept. 12 at the Johns Hopkins

Bloomberg School of Public Health, where violence against the LGBT community
and gun violence in general were discussed.
The symposium, coordinated by the LGBTQ Student Working Group at Johns
Hopkins, was titled, Violence Against LGBT Individuals: The Public Health
Response. It was in response to the massacre at Pulse nightclub in Orlando
three months earlier specically, but presenters noted that violence against
LGBT individuals happen all over.
Jordan White, a Ph.D. student moderated the program. Among the speakers
were Ronald J. Daniels, president of Johns Hopkins University; Monica Yorkman
of the Baltimore Transgender Alliance; and Dr. Daniel Webster, director of the
Center for Gun Policy and Research. Dr. Chris Beyrer, an expert in epidemiology
and international health and director of the Center for Public Health and
Human Rights, moderated the panel discussion that took place following the
presentations.
Yorkman explained that although Orlando was tragic, violence and abuse are
suered daily by women and trans women in Baltimore and beyond.
Orlando was a horrible tragedy. It was a holocaust, she told the audience.
For a lot of us, that holocaust was not an event. Its a reality we live every day.
Somewhere in this country, a transgender woman is killed almost every day.
Violence equals erasure.
Yorkman urges people to come and get to know us and is buoyed by the fact
so many transgender people are leading successful lives.
Poet Kenneth Morrison-Wensdorfer recited the poem, On That Night They
Danced he presented at a vigil in Baltimore following the Orlando tragedy.
Activist Saida Agostini also recited an original poem.
Webster presented statistics on gun violence, which indicate an increase
in occurrence once the assault weapons ban lapsed. He explained that, gun
availability not only makes aggression more lethal but increases suicides of
LGBT people by guns.
Besides Beyrer, Yorkman and Webster, the panel included Ava Pipitone,
executive director of the Baltimore Transgender Alliance. In discussing
intersectionality, Pipitone explained, We have systemic oppression, racial
oppression, gender identity. And it cant be addressed without addressing all of
the layers.
In addition to violence, other issues discussed that impact the trans community
included homelessness and joblessness.

Anxiety disorders more common

in HIV-positive gay men
LONDON HIV-positive gay and bisexual men are almost 10 times more
likely to be hospitalized because of mood and anxiety disorders than men in
the general population, according to Australian research published in the online
edition of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deciency Syndromes, AIDSMAP
reports.
The research also showed that gay and bisexual men with HIV were signicantly
more likely to be admitted to hospital with anxiety and mood disorders compared
to matched HIV-negative gay and bisexual men. Hospitalization due to this
was associated with an increased mortality risk, and there was an association
between substance abuse and mortality among hospitalized patients, AIDSMAP
reports.
Substance use was listed as the cause of death in 42 percent of deaths in the
HIV-infected cohort previously hospitalized (for disorders), note the authors.
This supports previous literature which has documented a high frequency of
comorbid psychiatric and drug dependence disorders in HIV-infected and gay
and bisexual men cohorts.
Investigators in Sydney, Australia, designed a study to address the limitations
of this earlier research. They focused on gay and bisexual men, a group known
to have a higher risk of mental health problems compared to the general
population. They examined the relationship between HIV status (HIV-positive vs.
HIV-negative) and hospitalization due to anxiety and mood disorders. They also
assessed whether admission to hospital with this type of mental health problem
was predictive of death, and whether this risk diered between HIV-positive and
HIV-negative men, AIDSMAP reports.
Participants came from two cohorts, one consisting of men with HIV (557
individuals), the other HIV-negative men (1,882 individuals). Both cohorts were
recruited in Sydney. The HIV-positive cohort was recruited between 1998 and
2006, whereas recruitment to the HIV-negative cohort took place between
2001-2004. Both cohorts consisted exclusively of men who identied as gay or
bisexual.
There were 300 hospital admissions due to anxiety. A signicantly greater
proportion of HIV-positive men were admitted to hospital for such disorders
than HIV-negative men (15 vs. 5 percent respectively).
Hospitalization rates with a primary anxiety/mood disorder diagnosis were
9.7 times higher among HIV-positive men compared with rates in the adult male
Australian population, AIDSMAP reports
Factors associated with hospitalization included having HIV, identifying as
bisexual rather than gay/queer/homosexual, being religious, having previously
sought support for mental health issues and being a smoker. Interestingly,
individuals who drank small amounts of alcohol were less likely to have an
admission compared to non-drinkers, the AIDSMAP article notes.

Trump the arsonist plays reghter

With this con artist
for a leader, who
would need enemies?

RICHARD J. ROSENDALL is a writer and activist.

Reach him at rrosendall@starpower.net.

Michelle Obama said on Sept. 16, The

presidency doesnt change who you are, it reveals who you are. The same thing is true of
a presidential campaign. Donald Trump demonstrated the truth of this the same day.
Without explanation or apology, Trump
dropped his birther lie against President
Obama, and told two more lies: that Hillary
Clinton started birtherism, and that he had
ended it in 2011. He angered the media in the
process by playing them to promote his luxury
hotel.
Trumps heavy-handedness may nally end
the false equivalence with which the media
have portrayed the major party nominees.
The thin case against Hillary (her email server,
decades of GOP smears, her every cough being treated like an operatic death scene) pales
beside Trumps nonstop lies and provocations, as his deal-making pales beside her
public service.
Trumps botched pivot away from birtherism did not dispel the nativist bigots he has
riled up, who would sooner pull down our
republic than accept the full enfranchisement
of women and people of color. Friday evening,

repeating his lie that Clinton wants to disarm

all Americans, he said of her Secret Service detail, Take their guns away and Lets see what
happens to her. The previous weekend, Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin threatened bloodshed
if Clinton wins. These men who talk about terrorists should look in a mirror.
Who made Trump the arbiter of a candidates legitimacy? His slanders and fabrications assume a privilege of passing judgment
that disproportionately targets minorities and
women. The outrage of African Americans at
his attacks on Obama is well expressed by my
friend Robert Naylor Jr., a leadership and diversity consultant:
What Mr. Trump has shown during and
prior to his campaign is much worse than
dog-whistle politics. Its part of a long-standing,
deep-seated eort to denigrate and delegitimize African Americans who dont t negative
racial stereotypes and who rise to positions
of prominence and authority. This underbelly
of racism that still exists in our country suggests that African Americans can only achieve
through the benevolence of whites, reduced
standards, special treatment, cheating, or
some combination of those things. One thing
I often say to young African-American men is
that nothing frightens and agitates the racists
more than an educated, intelligent, sophisticated black man.
It is hard to observe Trumps selshness,
recklessness, meanness, compulsive lying,
murky foreign ties and ignorant blather about
grave matters without wondering how otherwise decent people can support him. It only
makes sense as a destructive impulse borne
of bitterness and resentment. Instead of uplift,
he oers boasting and bile.
Its not just on him. The zeal with which Republicans pursue voting restrictions and revile
even the mildest gun regulations suggests

abandonment of the social compact that

makes our diverse people a nation. Fear and
ignorance function as a wrecking ball.
The reality-challenged assassins encouraged by Trumps call to disarm Clintons security detail would be shooting at a cartoon villain,
just as Cleveland ocer Timothy Loehmann
was shooting at a stereotype when he killed
12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014.
Too often white Americans act grievously
wounded when criticized, while we take discrimination against others in stride. We are
too much like Molires Imaginary Invalid for
people convinced of our national greatness,
hyperventilating over any suggestion that
Americas original sin lives on in other guises
150 years after the Civil War. Thus we deny
the white supremacist mindset hiding in plain
sight in stand your ground and voter ID
laws. We tout our Enlightenment values while
looking away as our neighbors denounce a
planned mosque or harass a woman wearing
hijab.
We will discover on Nov. 8 if we have degraded into a silly people swayed by empty
promises and brazen ignorance. This summer was the hottest on record; when Trump
dismisses climate change as a Chinese hoax,
he appeals to our decadence. Any greatness
we inherited came from facing challenges, not
avoiding them.
Electing a president whom Colin Powell
calls an international pariah might please
those who like nothing better than sticking
it to friends and enemies alike. Shall America
model itself on Trump by being pathologically
thin-skinned, sting our creditors, and evading responsibility? With such a leader, who
needs enemies?

Trump is a cancer on society

And the only cure is
electing Clinton president

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

I have been trying to understand what

it is leading so many people to apparently
accept the ugliness of Donald Trumps
words without ghting back. The media
give him a total pass and basically decent,
caring, loving people succumb to what
they seem to think is inevitable.
The more I thought about it and listened to Trump spout his invective the
more I realize he is a cancer on our society. He is the malignant tumor that has to
be cut out. Yet like with many malignancies they can spread and attack dierent

parts of the body while we look for the

way to destroy them. Trump is the evil
cancer that we must nd a way to destroy
before it destroys us.
The cancer that is Trump has shown our
society to be like the body that hosts and
allows the cancer to spread because of a
weakened immune system. Trump cancer is able to spread by going around the
decent healthy parts of society and focusing laser-like on the weaker ones. Those
weaker being some who are openly racist, sexist and homophobic; but more are
the many in society whose resolve to ght
has been weakened by the recession and
the day-to-day struggles they face.
Before its too late we need to nd the
cure for the Trump cancer. We need to
help those who are basically decent and
caring but who have been worn down by
life to nd the strength within themselves
to ght this cancer and not give into it. To
do this we need to show them while the
road back to health is hard it begins with
vowing not to succumb to the cancer.
To help society regain the strength to ght
the ugliness that is the Trump cancer we
need to give them a positive message allowing them to see and accept there is a bright-

er future ahead for them and their families.

Now its important we are honest and
tell people that like with chemotherapy
or other cancer drugs the cure isnt always easy and there will be some pain
along the way as together we defeat this
Trump cancer. We need them to believe
that like a loving family when one member is stricken with cancer the rest of us
will stand strong with them and ght it together. We will hold their hands through
the pain and develop the policies and
programs that will make the struggle and
pain easier to bare while they recover.
They need to believe that while the ght
is hard what awaits them and their families on the other side is worth ghting for.
For the past eight years, President
Obama has worked hard to strengthen
the immune system of our society. We
have avoided what looked like immediate
death from the Bush recession and slowly
but surely rebuilt the American economy.
We have fought o the cancer cells that
tried to destroy us then but like with many
cancers, they can appear to be cured while
merely being in remission. The Trump cancer is ending that remission and running
rampant over society wanting to stop our

progress to the nal cure and instead trying to kill society as we know it.
We know when cancer attacks the body
one of the ways besides chemotherapy
and drugs to ght it is for the person to
have a positive attitude and loving people
around them every day. They must be inspired to hope and see a healthy future
for themselves. The Trump cancer is trying to take away the light and bring back
the darkness of despair keeping society
from trying to ght it.
Whether it is here at home or around the
world, the Trump cancer is trying to destroy
the lifelines back to health. The Trump cancer is trying to end our alliances with NATO
and the ability to join forces with other allies to ght that other cancer that is named
ISIS. It seems Trump cancer will hook up
with any evil person, even Vladimir Putin, if
it helps him to spread his message of ugliness and hate within the body of society.
The Trump cancer can and must be
destroyed. If we join together and ght
it there is still time. With a willingness to
stay focused, not be sidelined with protest votes, and understanding the only
thing that will nally defeat Trump cancer
is electing Hillary Clinton.

Censorship of books, ideas alive and well

Combat ignorance, celebrate
Banned Books Week

KATHI WOLFE, a writer and poet, is a regular

contributor to the Blade.

If you cant read what you want

even if its horrible youre not free, my
Dad, who was Jewish and no fan of Hitler,
would say to me when I was young. Id
defend to my death the right of anyone to
read Mein Kampf!
I think of my fathers words each fall as
the school year begins. Its a safe bet that
along with football, pumpkin lattes and
falling leaves, books from The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini to The Lorax by
Dr. Seuss will be banned in schools and
libraries worldwide from Istanbul to London to Washington, D.C., to Texas to California. Though we can legally marry who
we love, picture books, young adult nov-

els, ction, poetry and non-ction with

LGBT characters and by queer authors
will likely still be among the most challenged literary works.
Sept. 25 to Oct. 1 is Banned Books
Week. The event celebrates the freedom
to read and brings attention to the harm
caused by censorship. The Week, brings
together...librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of
all types, the American Library Association says on its website, in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider
unorthodox or unpopular.
Sometimes, I nd it hard to believe
some of the books that have been
banned or the reasons why theyve been
challenged. China banned one of my
childhood faves, Green Eggs and Ham
from 1965 to 1991 (when Theodor Geisl,
a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, died) because of its portrayal of early Marxism. In 1963, some
Columbus, Ohio parents asked that the
Catcher in the Rye be banned for being
anti-white. Last year, the Bible, according to the ALA, was one of the 10 most
challenged books. Why? Because of its
religious viewpoint. Theres so much
buzz around censored books, that I al-

Its easy to take the

freedom to read what
we choose for granted.
most wish my poetry would be banned.
Everyone would want to read it, if it was
forbidden, I joke to myself.
But banning books is no joke. For many
queer kids, middle-schoolers and teens,
reading poetry, ction or non-ction written by LGBT authors or featuring characters like themselves is vitally important.
LGBT students report being ve times more
likely to skip school because they dont feel
safe after being bullied, according to bullyingstatistics.org. Reading compelling books
like Fun Home, by Alison Bechdel, I am
Jazz, by Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings,
Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens
Speak Out by Susan Kuklin and Two Boys
Kissing by David Levithan can be, literally,
life-saving for these young people. They let
kids who are questioning their sexuality or
coming out to know that theyre not alone.
If only these works had been out when I
was growing up. Yet, these books, too, were

among the most challenged books of 2015.

Banning books is just another form of
bullying. Its all about fear and an assumption of power, gay childrens book writer
James Howe has astutely said. The key is
to address the fear and deny the power.
In 1835, the poetry of Heinrich Heine
was banned in Germany because it was
considered to be too left-wing. When
they burn books, they will also burn people, Heine said. His dictum came to pass
when students under Nazi leadership
burned books in Germany.
Our country isnt like Nazi Germany.
But censorship of ideas that dier from
our own is alive and well. The D.C. Public Library Foundation is celebrating
Banned Books Week with an UNCENSORED banned books scavenger hunt.
The Foundation is hiding banned books
throughout D.C. Check out #UncensoredDC for clues. The black and white, untitled
covers of the books will be marked by
words like FILTHY or PROFANE. You
want to pick up a book that has SMUT on
the cover, Kramerbooks events manager
Sara Baline told NPR.
Its easy to take the freedom to read
what we choose for granted. Lets celebrate Banned Books Week.

Tobacco kills more HIV-positive D.C. residents than AIDS

More help is needed
to help smokers quit and
save LGBT lives
By DAVID MARINER
Smoking is killing our community. Every year, tobacco-related diseases take
more than 30,000 LGBT lives. In Washington, D.C., smoking is responsible for approximately 800 deaths every year, with a
disproportionate number of those deaths
coming from the LGBT community. Nearly 25 percent of LGBT adults in the United
States smoke, compared to only about 17
percent of straight adults.
Among those living with HIV/AIDS, tobacco use is even more prevalent. It is
estimated that as many as 70 percent of
people with HIV use tobacco and are twoto three-times more likely to smoke ciga-

rettes than people without HIV.

Because HIV hinders the bodys ability
to ght o infection or disease, smokers
with HIV are more prone to both HIVrelated infections (such as Thrush, white
mouth sores, and pneumonia) and fatal
tobacco-related illnesses (such as COPD,
heart disease and stroke, and cancer). In
fact, the life expectancy of a 35-year-old
smoker with HIV is cut by nearly eight
years because of smoking.
Smoking also negatively impacts antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV patients.
According to a study published in AIDS,
smoking doubles the risk of death for
someone with HIV on ART.
Higher rates of smoking in the LGBT
community can be attributed to a wide
range of factors, including coping with
the added stress of societal prejudices.
Unfortunately, many of the places meant
to be safe havens for LGBT individuals
and those with HIV are actually the main

battlegrounds for ghting smoking. The

tobacco industry has targeted LGBT individuals and people with HIV for 25 years,
advertising at LGBT community events,
including Pride, and even giving money
to both national and local LGBT and HIV/
AIDS organizations.
Surveys have found that two-thirds of
smokers with HIV want to quit, but they
need more resources to do so long-term.
With the highest rates of HIV in the country, the District should take heed.
This year, the D.C. Tobacco Free Coalition, the D.C. Department of Health, and
more than 40 community organizations
are coming together to battle smoking as
part ofD.C. Calls It Quits Week, Sept. 1925. But more help is needed to help D.C.
smokers quit and save LGBT lives from
tobacco-related diseases.
First, policymakers and providers
should make every eort to reach out to
the LGBT community to work with them

to raise awareness about the connection

between HIV and smoking. Better education for the LGBT community on the specic dangers of smoking while being HIV
positive would help discourage tobacco
use among patients.
Counseling and treatment to quit
smoking should also be integrated into
all HIV patients treatment programs, including both physical and mental health.
We know that smokers with HIV who receive counseling and treatment to quit
smoking, in conjunction with ART or mental health treatment, are more likely to
successfully quit smoking than when attempting to quit on their own.
Finally, access to resources to quit
smoking must be made available for every
D.C. resident with HIV. If you are a smoker
in D.C., call 1-800-Quit-Now (784-8669).
DAVID MARINER is executive director of the
D.C. LGBT Community Center.

Gay men talking about mental health

Why dont we take it as
seriously as physical tness?

BROCK THOMPSON is a D.C.-based freelance

writer. He writes regularly for the Blade.

Ive always found it interesting and

amusing that as gay kids we did pretty
much anything we could to get out of
gym, but as gay adults we more or less
ock to them. I remember in sixth grade
being terried of Coach Whitmore and
this terrible, sadistic game he invented
called crab soccer.
That was then. And Im sure most of us
had Coach Whitmore in our childhoods.
But now many us cant imagine gay city
life without the gym. For various reasons
best explored in other columns, gay men
put a huge premium on their physical
state. Naturally, we want to look good,
and feel good, but why does it seem
that when it comes to our mental health,
many of us dont seem to invest as much?
I was wondering about this issue gay
men and mental health so I grabbed
my friend Bobby, who last year started his
own organization,Strength in Our Voices,
with a mission to provide support for

people impacted by mental health issues.

We sat down a few Sundays ago in Larrys
Lounge. Heres what he had to stay:
Tell me more about Strength in Our
Voices.
SiOV is a mental health non-prot dedicated to eliminating stigmas surrounding
mental health. Our mission is to create
an environment of trust and support for
those impacted by mental health issues
through open dialogue, education, empowerment, and positive change. As a
group, we are individuals that have either experienced mental health issues
rsthand or truly believe in the cause of
eliminating stigmas so that we can all live
in a more understanding world. We hope
to use the power of social media and
storytelling to bring insights to our community. Additionally, we host events not
only to raise money but also to bring the
community together to talk about mental
health stigma.
What has SiOV been up to lately?
This past spring, SiOV hosted its
rst Summer of Strength Benet for
Change in D.C. where we raised more
than $16,000. With these proceeds we are
bringing Sources of Strength, a permanent, comprehensive suicide prevention
program, to McLean High School in Fairfax County, a region that has witnessed
high rates of teen suicide in recent years.
We are facilitating the program build out
at McLean this fall
Why is mental health important to
you?

Ive gone through so much in my own

life. From being bullied during middle and
high school to the process of coming out
in college. More recently, I struggle with
anxiety on a daily basis and regularly see
a therapist to work on stress reduction.
I know that talking about the issues Ive
experienced has been the most important action Ive ever taken to improve my
own health. If I had found a platform or
comfort with which to do so sooner in my
life, I wouldnt have had to suer alone as
long as I did. I hope to be able to touch
lives so that someone out there might
feel like they are not alone, and even nd
it in themselves to seek help through a
friend, family, or medical professional.
What issues surrounding mental
health are of particular importance to
gay men?
Generally, LGBTQ individuals are three
times more likely than others to experience a mental health condition such as
major depression or generalized anxiety
disorder. Additionally, gay men experience identity issues, posttraumatic stress
disorder, suicide ideation, substance
abuse and body dysmorphia, among others.
In my opinion, I think that the mental
health issues gay men face originate from
two primary sources: societal expectations and the gay social scene.
Theres a dynamic between gay men
and heterosexual/religious communities. That is, theres a sense of wanting
to remain acceptable within the eyes of

a majority that had recently rejected us.

This may be changing as younger generations enter into adulthood. However,
I do feel as if many of us expect to face
homophobia or discrimination at some
point. Whether this makes us sensitive,
defensive or want to seem impressive,
Im not sure. But theres something there
that has an eect on our mental health.
Regarding the gay community, we live
in a hypersexualized, active community
that is both vain and self-loathing. One
on hand, we are accepting of dierences, but on the other hand, we are body
shaming, judgmental critics mostly of
ourselves. Social media self-armation
is common; we are constantly bombarded by shirtless seles. Body dysmorphia
is a huge issue in the gay community
as a result. We are also a close-knit, extremely social, but small community
which makes gay men both competitive
and cliquey. I think that the concept of
being a fabulous, multi-faceted, A-type
gay who throws perfect dinner parties
is something that plagues much of the
gay community. We constantly size ourselves up to other gay men. Additionally,
we tend to interact with a number of gay
men, but we arent particularly close with
a majority of them (its simply not possible to be close friends with that many
people). As a result, weknoweveryone,
but we dontreallyknow everyone; judgment and gossip lls the gaps.

10 Reasons why Old Town Commons is a GREAT place to live:

After a hot, steady real estate market

this summer, the fall market has arrived
with a slew of brand new inventory for
buyers. Most people do not realize market
trends, but the fall real estate market is the
second most productive of the year after
the spring real estate market beginning
in March. While the D.C. areas market
has shown conservative growth this year
compared to previous years, the fall
market is expected once again to bring
more housing inventory without signicant

Regardless of the decision of selling a
house, the fall season for any homeowner
should include a standard maintenance list
to prepare the home for colder weather.

How long have you been out and who

was the hardest person to tell?
I came out in 1991. Telling my mom was
hardest. She assumed my life would be
hard, lonely and less fullling. She was
really isolated in her grief as there were
very few out parents at that time. And
PFLAG wasnt her thing. I was proud of
her for nding a way of accepting me, my
partners and my friends as quickly and as
fully as she did.

Lisa Wise
The Nest D.C. entrepreneur answers 20 gay questions
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
Lisa Wise took a chance, but its paying off.
At just about the height of the great recession in 2009, she and friend Jim
Pollack founded Nest D.C., a boutique property management company (nest-dc.
com) she says is all about excellence.
Over its eight-year history, Nest has grown to 20 staff members who work to
offer excellent spaces that attract great tenants, Wise says. Weve found that
when people are happy where they live, they make better neighbors. Better
neighbors lead to better neighborhoods.
Wise says the current D.C. market is hot, hot, hot for sellers and that many of
her clients have sold their rental properties this year.
Were in a wait-and-see pattern as folks wait out the elections, the 44-year-old,
Hailey, Idaho, native says. We expect a pretty decent surge in business once we all
know who well call president come January. Lets hope it doesnt rhyme with chump.
Wise came to Washington 14 years ago to explore a relationship with Cameron
Cohen, whos now her wife. They live in 16th Street Heights with their 4-year-old
son, Beckett.
Wise enjoys business magazines, learning Spanish, hiking and travel in her free time.

Whos your LGBT hero?

Ellen D. Shes been my girl since she
dated boys on Ellen in the 90s.

Whats Washingtons best nightspot,

past or present?
I miss Buddha Bar. It was so over the top,
indulgent and fun. And one day it just
vanished. RIP Buddha

Describe your dream wedding.

Ive been married twice. To the same
person. Once in an off the books
wedding in 2009 and again in 2011
when we were expecting our son Beckett
and gay marriage was legal in D.C. The
second wedding was also technically
a law breaker. We got married on an
unusually snowy day in late October
with 20 very close friends at the FDR
memorial where you cant gather for a
ceremony. Since we were the only folks
there, the National Park personnel looked
the other way while we took vows that
would be honored by us and the law. Both
weddings were perfect because we were
surrounded by people who embraced
our relationship and our family. If I were
to experience just a few days over, those
would be top of the list.

What non-LGBT issue are you most

passionate about?
Health care and education. Everyone
deserves access to both, free of charge.
The social impact would be immeasurable
and amazing.

What historical outcome would you

change?
Ronald Reagan winning the 1980
presidential election.
Whats been the most memorable pop
culture moment of your lifetime?
Elvis dying. Wow, Im old.

On what do you insist?

Generosity. From myself and others. I
value that more than almost anything.

What was your last Facebook post or

BIG push to get folks out to a Casino night
fundraiser were hosting for La Clinica del

Pueblo on Sept. 22nd.(want to come?)

If your life were a book, what would

the title be?
The Girl Who Rode In on a Horse Named
Mortgage

If science discovered a way to change

sexual orientation, what would you do?
First, ask why they bothered with the
study in the rst place, then wonder how
much bigger the LGBTQ community
might get.

What do you believe in beyond the

physical world?
I really buy into the whole Mercury
Retrograde thing. Seriously, when
Mercury is moving backward, everything
in my life is out of whack (it is for you too,
seriously).

Whats your advice for LGBT movement

leaders?
Im already so grateful for what theyve
done. Living as a gay person in an urban
center is so much easier. When we travel
outside the city as a little family, we
denitely get the side eye in some areas
and its uncomfortable to say the least.
Were lucky when we can retreat to a
supportive community. I want everyone to
have that. Everywhere.

What would you walk across hot coals

for?
Ending poverty.

What LGBT stereotype annoys you

most?
Whos the man and whos the woman. I
never tire of hating that.

Whats your favorite LGBT movie?

Incredibly True Story of Two Girls in Love

Whats the most overrated social

custom?
Sharing food when were in a small-plates
environment. Why share small plates of
overpriced food?

What trophy or prize do you most

covet?
Guinness Book of World Records for most
pogo stick bounces. I made a big play for
this in 1979, but wasnt sure how to get on
their radar.

What do you wish youd known at 18?

Wear sunscreen and eat as much as you
want while you still can.

Why Washington?
Im a small-town girl with big city
aspirations. D.C. delivers when it comes to
big opportunities but with a small-town feel.

Curators say gay rights struggle, civil rights eort inextricably linked
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO

The Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture opens this weekend.

How many LGBT items are in the new

Smithsonian National Museum of AfricanAmerican History and Culture and is it
enough to please gay historians?
Its a tough question to answer because
some ostensibly gay items may not
be presented as such. Its now widely
believed, for instance, that A Raisin in
the Sun playwright Lorraine Hansberry
was a closeted lesbian for much of her
short life (she died at age 34 in 1965), but

to what degree does this factor into her

representation in the museum, for instance?
Slated to open this weekend with a
ceremony Saturday morning in which
President Obama will speak, the museum
has yet to be assessed by the public. And
curators acknowledge its impossible to
please everyone. Descendants of the
Quander family, whose roots can be traced
back to slaves at George Washingtons
Mount Vernon, have publicly expressed

disappointment at not being represented

in the inaugural museum displays, for
instance. But whether theres enough
LGBT representation overall to please gay
historians is yet to be determined.
Nothing included in the 100-years-inthe-making museum (ocially established
in 2003), which cost $540 million to build
($315 million came from private funds) and
which broke ground in February 2012, was
considered lightly. Among artifacts included

in the 400,000-square foot building situated

on ve acres adjacent to the Washington
Monument on the National Mall, are Harriet
Tubmans hymnal, a slave cabin dating to
the early 1800s, a dress handmade by Rosa
Parks, a fedora worn in concert by Michael
Jackson, pieces of a slave ship, a plane from
the Tuskegee Institute used to train AfricanAmerican pilots during World War II, a bill of

Priscilla actor returns in

another gender-bending role

When the script was complete, Elliott

asked Weaving to read for the role of
Tick/Mitzi.
It was a no-brainer, really, Weaving
says. Id always been fascinated by
drag as a political act. To prepare for
the role, Weaving talked to drag queens
and worked closely with StrykerMeyer, a
highly respected Australian performance
artist who served as one of makeup
artists for the lm.
Weaving says he also drew on his
training as a professional clown.
In clowning, he says, youre taught
that every human being has their own
specic clown inside of them. I think
the same is true of drag. I realized that
everyone has their own drag inside
of them and I wanted to get out there
and nd mine. It was such a liberating,
therapeutic experience.
Beyond wearing couture and sequins,
Weaving is known for an amazing variety
of dramatic roles, including Elrond in
The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit
movies, Agent Smith in The Matrix and
its sequels, V in V for Vendetta and the
evil Red Skull in Captain America: The
First Avenger.
In addition to his work on screen,
Weaving has been aliated with the
renowned Sydney Theatre Company
since his graduation from drama school.
He describes the company as a place
where he can perform wonderful roles in
wonderful plays and where we can explore
great texts through an Australian lens.
In 2011, the company brought its
production of Chekhovs Uncle Vanya
to the Kennedy Center. Weaving won a
Helen Hayes Award for his performance
as the charismatic Astrov (against Cate
Blanchetts Yelena). Weaving says, it was
real treat to spend time in D.C. and that he
was fascinating to see how D.C. audiences
responded to the play. It was a real
cultural mish-mash, he says. A Russian
playwright, a Hungarian director, an
Australian cast and American audiences.

Just as he did in The Adventures of
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, (1994)
Australian actor Hugo Weaving gets to
wear some fabulous outts in his new
movie, The Dressmaker.
Based on the novel by Rosalie Ham,
The Dressmaker (it opens Friday, Sept.
23 in area theaters) is about Tilly Dunnage
(Kate Winslet) and her dramatic return to
the small Australian town of Dungator.
Sent away to boarding school after being
accused of murdering another child, Tilly
has ed to Europe and become a haute
couture fashion designer. She returns
to her hometown to discover the truth
about her past and seek revenge on the
townspeople who mistreated her.
Hugo Weaving plays Sergeant Farrat,
the voice of law and order in the ctional
town. The Sergeant is also one of Tillys
biggest fans.
Hes really a nice man, Weaving says
of his character. He genuinely cares for
the people in his community, but he is a
man with secrets. He leads a double life.
Sergeant Farrat is a cross-dresser. His
passion, the actor says, is making dresses
for himself. He loves the feeling of silk on his
thigh. But, in a small town in rural Australia
in 1951, that makes him vulnerable to
blackmail. Hes caught up in personal
issues he has to hide, Weaving says, and
thats a weakness that helps to set the story
of The Dressmaker in motion.
Weaving describes the movie as a
revenge fantasy spaghetti Western and
says the movie has all the trappings of
a classic Hollywood western, but with a
contemporary twist. The movie was shot
on location in a nature reserve in southern
Australia, a landscape that echoes the
rugged beauty of the American West. The
cinematography by Donald McAlpine and

the score by David Hirschfelder recall the

look and sounds of the classic Western.
He says Production Designer Roger
Ford built a very evocative, detailed
Western set in the middle of that
Australian nature reserve. Theres the
traditional main street where much of
the action takes place. Its anked by
buildings made of weathered wood,
some of which were practical and some
of which were just facades.
Theres also the mandatory gunght,
but in this movie its between rival
dressmakers. Its Tilly with her sumptuous
haute couture gowns versus the
unpleasant Una Pleasance (Sacha Horler)
with her decent, sensible designs.
Weaving also praises screenwriter and
director Jocelyn Moorhouse with bringing
her own distinctive style to this rethinking
of the Hollywood western. Early in their
careers, Weaving and Moorhouse worked
together on her lm Proof (1991).
Weaving admired her intelligent, playful
writing and her black sense of humor. He

says her work requires a very particular

playing style, a way of nding the
characters truth in a world of heightened
reality. Its very dicult to strike that
stylistic balance. One moment youre
playing a very serious scene and the next
youre playing very broad comedy. Shes
quite adventurous and has a wonderful
way of synthesizing dierent styles.
Weaving is, of course, best known to
LGBT audiences around the globe for
his breakout performance in director
Stephan Elliotts The Adventures of
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. While
Weaving was working on Elliotts rst
movie, the comedy crime thriller Frauds,
the director told the actor about the idea
for his next movie.
Stephan told me the story come to him
when he saw a single feather rolling down
Oxford Street the morning after Sydneys
Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. He told me
the basic outline of the story and I said
it was a fantastic premise. I asked him to
give me a role in it.

Irascible playwright
was towering gure
in American theater
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
When playwright Edward Albee was
honored by the annual Lambda Literary
Awards in 2011, he told the audience, A
writer who happens to be gay or lesbian
must be able to transcend self. I am not
a gay writer. I am a writer who happens
to be gay. He added Any denition that
limits us is deplorable.
Because the Lambda Awards celebrates
writing from a queer perspective, his words
werent exactly what his hosts and the
gathered crowd wanted to hear. But that
was Albee. He spoke his mind, sometimes
rued feathers and wrote great plays.
On Sept. 16, Albee, the towering
mainstay of American theater who gave
us Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, died
after a short illness at home in Montauk,
N.Y., the beach town on the tip of Long
Island. He was 88.
Albees long career which garnered three
Pulitzer Prizes and three Tony Awards
(two for best play and one for lifetime
achievement) began in earnest in 1958 when
he was 30 with The Zoo Story, a one act
about two very dierent and unacquainted
men who uncomfortably meet on a park
bench. Albee followed up this o-Broadway
success with absurdist one-act plays The
Sandbox and The American Dream, and
a more traditional drama concerning racism
The Death of Bessie Smith.
Next, he achieved big Broadway success
with Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in
1962. Five years later he scored big with
his drawing room alienation drama A
Delicate Balance. And in 1975, Seascape,
an expressionist fantasy in which two
couples (one human and the other, a pair
of anthropomorphic lizards) meet on the
beach to talk about love, relationships and
the evolutionary process.
Throughout the following years he

wrote many plays, allowed remounts of

early works both with varying degrees
of success before making a sort of
a comeback in 1994 with Three Tall
Women, an autobiographical work
describing a mother who cant handle her
son being gay. In 2002 he enjoyed great
success winning the Tony for The Goat,
or, Who is Sylvia, (2002) the story of a
successful Manhattan architect who has
an aair with a farm animal.
Though not a Pulitzer winner, Whos
Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is considered the
playwrights masterpiece. Set in a small
college town, the action unfolds over one
late night of booze-fueled misbehavior
and psychic combat. Awash in booze,
middle-aged hosts George, a swampy
professor, and his louche wife Martha
welcome the colleges new t young
professor and his mousy wife Honey with
drinks and an array of unnerving party
games that keep the older couple both at
odds and glued together and the younger
pair on edge. Still, the plays brilliant
dialogue with its nonstop onslaught
of unmatchable searing repartee and
heartfelt words has proved a favorite of
gay audiences of a certain age.
Virginia Woolf was adapted to the
screen in a successful 1967 lm starring
then-real life raucous couple Richard
Burton and Elizabeth Taylor as George
and Martha, and the younger couple
was played by George Siegel and Sandy
Dennis. Taylor and Dennis both won
Academy Awards for their eorts.
Some critics averred that Albee was
in fact portraying two gay couples in
Virginia Woolf. Substituting straight for
gay relationships was a claim sometimes
thrown at gay writers. Albee patently
rejected the idea, and while he may have
benetted by retreating to the closet, he
was out his entire career. Albee counted
famed playwright Terrance McNally
among his early lovers and sculptor
Jonathan Thomas was his partner from
1971 until Thomas death in 2005 at 57.

TYLER GLENNs new solo album is more daring than anything he did with former band Neon Trees.

Utah-based electro-new wave revivalists

Neon Trees rode their breakthrough
single, 2009s Animal, to an impressive
wave of success. Similar stylistically to the
Killers (for whom Neon Trees opened) with
perhaps a bit more manic energy, Neon
Trees sound was perfect for a period in
which the pop charts were blitzed with
80s-inspired electronica.
They scored a Top 10 hit in 2011 with
the upbeat dance/pop Everybody Talks
and their second album Picture Show
made the Top 20.
Meanwhile, things were changing for
lead vocalist Tyler Glenn. Neon Trees
were all members of the Mormon Church,
which holds a decidedly dim view on
homosexuality. Glenn came out publicly
as gay in April 2014, just two weeks prior
to the release of the bands all-important
third album Pop Psychology (which
ultimately sold far fewer copies than
the bands rst two releases). Glenns
announcement predictably caused a rift
among fans, and it also evidently fractured
Glenns family and Neon Trees itself.
According to a July 21, 2016 piece in
Billboard Magazine, Glenns brother and
the still-practicing Mormon members of
Neon Trees were, at least as of the time of
that interview, no longer on speaking terms
with the singer. Another reminder, as if
we needed one, of the steep price some
individuals are forced to pay to be who they
truly are as a person and an artist.
The good news for Glenn is that his
rst solo album, Excommunication, is as
electrifying and upbeat as anything Neon
Trees might have produced and boasts
the added poignancy of exploring Glenn
literally losing his religion. He addresses
this trauma with piercing directness on
songs like G.D.M.M.L. GIRLS (God Didnt
Make Me Like Girls), an explicit and
deant embrace of his sexuality in the
face of superstitious rejection. Glenn
pushes back against the condescending
term tolerated and stands up proudly
for exactly who he is.
Glenn has a well-developed sense of
caustic sarcasm, which he liberally sprinkles

through the albums nakedly confessional

lyrics. He explores the doubt, confusion,
rejection and ultimate determination
and yearning for freedom that Glenn
experienced while going through such
a pivotal period in his life. This was a real
change in personal spirituality for Glenn. He
was a devout Mormon, a true believer and
yet he knew he had same-sex attraction
from an early age.
That long simmering sense of shame
and confusion nally gave way to
acceptance, deance and armation
that he has every right to be the person
he should be and he is in no way lesser
than those who choose to follow a
mythology that they believe elevates
them to a spiritual and moral superiority
to their fellow humans. He explores these
concepts with a pulsing modern pop
energy, an album thats simultaneously
fun and deeply meaningful. On songs like
the kinetic Trash, Glenn skewers the
self-righteous with their own hypocrisy,
derisively sneering one mans trash is
another mans treasure.
At times, like on the retro groove
Shameless and the manic new wave
thriller First Vision, Jake Shears and
Scissor Sisters seem to be an obvious
inuence on Glenns sound, and thats not
a bad thing. Glenn doesnt stray too far
from the general vibe he helped cultivate
with Neon Trees, but Excommunication
is ear candy more daring and sonically
adventurous than any of his past work.
He also shows himself once again to
be a rst-rate vocalist, especially on the
dramatic ballad Midnight.
The album closes with Devil, a cunning
mix of heavy electronic pop with gospel
inuences and the recurring hook I found
myself when I lost my faith that is ultimately
the albums dening theme. Glenns solo
debut nds himself reveling not only in his
ability to nally, without reservation, come
to terms with his true self, but in his ability
to nally shrug o those who cant accept it.
Dont pray for me, dont pray for me, no,
he sings derisively.
Excommunication is not only a
declaration of self, its a road-map for
those who may be where Glenn was
several years ago, lled with fear, doubt,
confusion and an absence of self-worth.
This album is exactly the kind of testimony
they need to hear.

New LGBT-inclusive rugby team forms in Baltimore

First match planned
against Philadelphia
Gryphons next month
By KEVIN MAJOROS
In July, some of the players traveling
from outlying areas of D.C. to train with the
Washington Scandals rugby team realized
there was enough interest to try to form
an LGBT-inclusive team in Baltimore.
After just two months of recruitment,
skills clinics and social media outreach,
the Baltimore Flamingos rugby team
has emerged. Three of its new players
partnered with the Washington Scandals
and traveled to the recent Beaver Bowl in
Toronto to gain tournament experience.
Members say their name is a tip of the hat
to John Waters (Pink Flamingos); their
tag line is erce and lthy.
Baltimores Ken Lentz scored his rst
try (grounding the ball in the oppositions
in-goal area) and the spark was ignited
for the Flamingos to soldier onward. Next
week 13 Flamingo players will partner
with the newly formed Columbus Kodiaks

to play as a team in the Queen City Crown

in Charlotte, N.C.
At the end of October, they will
play their rst full-edged match as a
complete team when they travel north to
take on the Philadelphia Gryphons. They
currently have 23 players registered with
USA Rugby and will increase that by the
end of next month.
This is something that has been
missing in Baltimore and the timing was
right. There were already LGBT-inclusive
teams in Philly and D.C. and the interest
was there to get this started, says Darrell
Coey, president of the Flamingos. Its
pretty incredible how far we have come in
just a few short months. There has been a
ton of support from the community.
Coey is one of the players that had
been traveling down to D.C. to play with
the Scandals. Previously living in Richmond,
he moved to Baltimore in March to work
at Hopkins in HR and recruitment and had
no prior experience in rugby until he was
introduced to the Scandals.
When you have no history of
athleticism, it can hold a person back,
Coey says. Most of our new players have
no rugby experience and the camaraderie

we have already established is palpable.

Next month when they take on the
Philadelphia Gryphons, they will be
sporting new jerseys as a result of their
crowdsourcing and support from the
Baltimore Eagle and Grand Central
Station. Recruitment eorts were assisted
by coverage from the Pride Foundation of
Maryland and the Third Half Online.
They are currently looking for a
permanent coach, but in the meantime

are benetting from the expertise of

Scandals founder Arc Riley.
Riley stepped in to lead the skills clinics
and provide coaching for the new players
along with bringing in members of the
Scandals and the Gryphons to create
scrimmages. The team is now practicing
on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8
p.m. at Druid Hill Park.

glass shards from a Baptist church bombed
in Birmingham, Ala., in 1963 and, of course,
much more. About 3,000 items are on
display from the museums collection of
about 37,000 items, most of which are
stored in a Smithsonian storage facility in
Suitland, Md. Only about 200 items of the
3,000 on display are loans; the rest have
been bequeathed or given to the museum.
For William Pretzer, supervisory
museum curator of history who worked
on the exhibit A Changing America: 1968
and Beyond, LGBT history and the Civil
Rights Movement are inextricably linked.
The
African-American
freedom
movement inspired other groups to
organize and agitate for their own
liberation, so the feminist movement
of the early 70s, the Hispanic-Latino
Chicano movement, the American-Indian
movement and the LGBT movement, are
all connected, says Petzer.
A section dubbed the movement marches
on, includes a Stonewall badge for instance,
as well as items from other movements.
These issues are all connected,
Pretzer says. Class, immigration, national
origin, sexual orientation theyre all
issues of identity.
Over the last several years, curators
hosted programs around the country to
give advice to the public on how to preserve
items of historic signicance. Some items
were donated, some were kept in families.
Museum ocials felt some items made
more sense to have displayed in regional
museums. Pretzer says the response was
overwhelming and very positive.
There are always objects that we
frankly dont believe merit inclusion in
the national collection, so have to reject
some things, but then there are other
things that we really want to include but
people say, No, wed really like to keep
this in the family. Thats just part of our
ongoing operations.
One item that was a no-brainer, Pretzer
says, is perhaps the most signicant
LGBT-related item included an
inscribed watch that Martin Luther King,
Jr. gave to Bayard Rustin, a gay man who
was chief organizer of the 1963 March
on Washington in which King gave his
historic I Have a Dream speech. The
watch, owned by Rustins surviving
partner, Walter Naegle, had been
included in the Smithsonian National
Museum of American History for the 50th
anniversary of the march in 2013 and
Pretzer worked with Naegle to have the
watch included in the new museum. He
agreed to loan it to the African-American
museum for ve years.
Naegle says hes glad to hear that

Rustin, who died in 1987, is identied

as gay in the text accompanying the
display. Naegle will be in Washington this
weekend for the opening. He says Rustin
would be very happy the museum is
happening and happy his contributions
are being recognized.
Pretzer says the signicance of the
watch is obvious.
Its a very poignant reminder of the
relationship between Martin Luther King
and Bayard Rustin, Pretzer says. Not
only is it an acknowledgement of Rustins
importance in the Civil Rights movement
as perhaps the greatest organizer of events
during that era, its also testimony to Kings
support of Rustin even when others advised
against keeping him as an adviser because
of his sexual orientation. Others opposed
his prominent place in the movement but
this watch is tangible evidence that King
rejected that advice and embraced Rustin
as a key and important ally.
Other nods to LGBT African-American
history include a poster from the 1989
semi-documentary Tongues Untied by
Marlon Riggs; playbills from The Colored
Museum by gay playwright/director
George C. Wolfe and Hansberrys A
Raisin in the Sun; photos of dancers by
gay photographer, the late Jack Mitchell;
paintings by LGBT artists such as Malvin
Gray Johnson and Earle Richardson; gay
novelist/poet James Baldwins passport; a
photo of a man holding a sign that says, I
am a black, gay man at the 1995 Million
Man March and more.
Queer bassist and singer-songwriter
Meshell Ndegeocello will perform
