Exercise VM archive
The exercise VM is made available as an OVA (Open Virtualization Archive) file that contains a
compressed, installable version of a virtual machine. Use your virtualization software program to
open/import and extract the OVA file.
System Requirements
The following are required for completing Pega Academy exercises using the VM:

Note: If your computer has a 64-bit capable CPU and you receive an error message when you try to
run the virtual machine that reads: This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686
CPU, the BIOS setting for virtualization is most likely not enabled on your computer., you must enable
virtualization in the BIOS setting to continue. Perform a Google search to find instructions specific to
your computer.

Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer (911), Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Safari, or Firefox
Some courses on Pega Acadamy require Microsoft Office. Beginning in version 7.1.8, Pega 7 supports
any version of Microsoft Office that can read and interpret .docx, .xlsx, and .csv files.
Note: The average size of a Pega Academy VM is 5GB. Depending on your internet connection, the
time it takes to download a Pega Academy VM will vary.
Follow these steps to download the exercise system using the button at the bottom of the page.

1. Click the Download Exercise System button. A dialog displays a Download Token ID.
Using Chrome or Firefox Select Save Link As to initiate the download of the VM.
3. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, or Google Chrome, you must correct
the file type extension. These browsers will change the file type extension to .tar you
must change the file type extension to .ova before you initiate the download.

Click the link for the exercise system in the Related Content section.
The exercise system archive downloads to the default download folder on your computer.
VirtualBox https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
VirtualBox is available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License
(GPL) version 2.
VMware https://my.vmware.com/en/web/vmware/downloads
Workstation Player (Windows only). Paid license required; free for personal use.
Fusion (OS X and macOS only). Paid license required; free trial.
After installing the virtualization software of your choice, proceed to the appropriate section in this
document to learn how to run the VM. To use:

2. On the bottom right, click the Folder icon to browse to the OVA you downloaded.
3. Select the OVA you want to import into VirtualBox, and then click Open .
4. Click Next.
5. Click Import to import the OVA.
The OVA is preconfigured with the necessary settings.

3. Confirm the Enable Network Adapter check box is selected and the Name is set to an available
network adapter on your computer.
4. Click OK.
Starting the VM
Make sure the VM is selected in the Library panel, and then click the Start icon.

Once you see the console screen, you can minimize the VM window to your Taskbar or Dock.
When you are ready to complete an exercise, go to the Logging into Pega 7 section on page 11.
3. Browse to and select the downloaded OVA file, and then click Open .
4. Optionally, rename the VM, and then click Import.
5. If a message box displays indicating an issue with OVF specification conformance, click Retry.

6. Click either the Green start arrow in the menu bar or click Play virtual machine.

Once you see the console screen, you can minimize the VM window to your Taskbar or Dock.
When you are ready to complete an exercise, go to the Logging into Pega 7 section on page 11.
7. If a message box displays indicating an issue with OVF specification conformance, click Retry.

8. Click Finish .
If you are prompted to upgrade the VM, you may do so, but upgrading is not required.
The VM runs in a new window.
After the VM starts, a console screen displays with information regarding the URL to access the Pega 7
application.
Once you see the console screen, you can minimize the VM window to your Taskbar or Dock.
When you are ready to complete an exercise, go to the Logging into Pega 7 section on page 11.

IMPORTANT: The IP address shown in the image above is not a real IP address. The IP address
displayed in the VMconsole screen will be complete, and is different for each VM.
The home page provides information about the course and a link to access Pega 7.
IMPORTANT: The IP address shown in the image above is an example only. The IP address displayed
in your browser will most likely be different and is the one you should use.
To login to Pega 7 and complete the exercises, enter the user name and password found in the course
materials.

VirtualBox
1. Log out of Pega 7.
2. From the VirtualBox Manager, right click on the virtual machine you want to shut down and select
Close > ACPI Shutdown .
Alternatively, from the Machine menu item, select ACPI Shutdown .
VMware Fusion
1. Log out of Pega 7.
2. From the menu bar, select Virtual Machine > Shut Down .
3. Click the Shut Down button to confirm the shutdown request.
Getting Help
Technical support for the VM is available to all students who are enrolled in Pega Academy courses
that use the VM. If you experience technical difficulties with the VM, visit the Pega Academy Exercise
System forum page at http://pdn.pega.com/forums/pega-academy/exercise-system-pvs. If you do not
find an answer to your problem after searching this forum, post a message and we will assist you.
