Terry Mead never realized buying himself a boat
would start a chain reaction
leading to an extensive remodel of their home.
I wanted a place to
store it, Terry said. We
were planning to add onto
the garage.
Adding on to the garage was only the beginning. Terry and Jacki Mead

kitchen in January and followed the same u-shape pattern with their lower cabinets, but extended the one
side closest to the dining
room out one foot.
It gave us more room,
Terry said. We expanded it
as much as we could.
To make the kitchen
feel more open, the Meads
did not follow the u-shaped
design for the upper cabinets.
That gave it more of
an open, spacious feel,
Jacki said.
The Meads also installed brand new, darker
cabinets, can lights in the
ceiling and all new appliances.
They also did a built-in
full-wall cabinet with a new
refrigerator and double oven
where an old desk, cabinets,
refrigerator and microwave
were.

The Meads now have an 18-by 42-foot addition to their garage to store
their boat. That addition will also have room for an 18- by 12-foot
man cave for Terry. This addition led to the Meads remodeling their
kitchen, upstairs bathroom and several other facets of their home.

space because of that,
Jacki said. We love it.
Despite all the new
items in their kitchen, the
ceramic tile flooring stayed
the same, and inspired the
Meads to choose their corian countertops.
We wanted the countertops to match the tile,
Jacki said.
Although they replaced
their original cabinets, they
did not let them go to waste.
We kept them for our
sons living in duplexes in
Minneapolis, Jacki said.
It was a nice way to reuse
these quality cabinets.
During the two months
the kitchen was being remodeled, their upstairs
bathroom was under construction, too.
We wanted a walk-in
ceramic tile shower with
no door, Jacki said. We
also wanted to open it up
more and have more natural
light.

Once those projects
were nearing completion,
the Meads had a few more
projects to complete before the contractors left that
spring.
They replaced the cabinets and desk in the additional porch next to the dining room with a new built-in
entertainment center.
It will be nice to have
two TVs and two different
rooms for when we entertain our family and friends
here, Jacki said.
Again, the Meads reused those cabinets in the

In Sauk Centre, Dawn and Kenny Bass have been living in their three-story home built
in 1917, for 22 years.
Bringing the washer and dryer up from the basement is what started the project, but
we didnt have a place to bring it to, Dawn said. That is when I knew it was time to start
the remodeling process.
In 2014, they started the process by moving their washer and dryer up into the pantry
on the main level.
Dawn, 61, and Kenny, 62, want their home to t their aging needs for years to come.
The pantry, bedroom and bathroom are all new, replacing a smaller bedroom and bathroom and part of the kitchen.
When we put in the new bedroom and bathroom, we made the doors wheelchair
accessible, Dawn said.
However, there was a dilemma.
Dawn kept thinking about how she wanted something new, with more space.
For years, the Basses had an L-shaped kitchen which made it hard to maneuver.
We could squeeze ve people around the table, but we were squished, Dawn said.
Two people could t comfortably.
The dining table in their kitchen was made in 1900 and was a wedding gift to Kennys
grandparents. They were able to purchase it this last year from a relative.
On the wall in the kitchen there is an old crank telephone, a hutch with antique China
and a our sifter.
Two years ago, the Basses hired Aaron Lahr as their contractor. He cut down the walls
enclosing the kitchen area to make it more open.
The yellow countertop on the island was in the kitchen when they moved in, but they
replaced that right away with Formica. When they remodeled in 2014, they replaced the
Formica with quartz. The walls were painted with brown and gold earthy tones. New wood
oors replaced the old wood oors after they changed the shape of the kitchen.
The oak cabinets in the kitchen are 20 years old and are still in very good shape. But
Dawn needed more storage space, so Kenny built two more cabinets to add to the bunch.
Kenny likes doing this sort of stuff, so we saved some money by doing it ourselves,
Dawn said.
The framing on the kitchen windows needed to be replaced, so Dawn went over to the
lumberyard and requested wood framing. The lumberyard workers didnt think that was a
good idea, that maybe vinyl would last longer.
But I knew I wanted to
keep it as close to the original
as I could, so I went with the
wood framing, Dawn said.
I just like the old look.
Dawn has always had an
interest in collecting antiques.
The second level is primarily nished with minor
details before its complete.
Upstairs there are three
bedrooms that need plastering
along with some wood-work
projects which the Basses
will tackle themselves.
The list was short for outside remodeling projects, but
there were two projects that
needed to be done to make
their home feel like home.
Originally, the home had
a at roof on the back part of
the house, so in 2014 when
they tore out the old kitchen,
bathroom and bedroom, they
put a peak roof on it to give
it a house look. They also
added a deck on the back side
of the home which they use
frequently.
Little by little, the Basses
are working on their projects.

area, as space was one of the reasons Dawn wanted close to completion with everything this winter, Dawn

said. Cause it didnt get done this summer and probably not this fall because we love our
camping too much.
Collecting antiques is a hobby that Dawn Bass has enjoyed doing for years.
Some items that she has collected include an old crank telephone, a hutch with
antique China and a our sifter. Above is the nished sink area surrounded by
