detailed history of poor and
vulnerable household and
families. The information was
forwarded to Government of
NCT of Delhi to follow up for
providing Schemes to these
poor families. We observed
that in these congested
areas, people are really in
need as most of the men are
suffering
from
different
diseases and cannot afford to
work and it is difficult for
women to take the burden of
family responsibility. We also
observed 40% are disabled
and 30-35 % is widows and
divorcees. With the help of
Delhi Government, it will be
possible for us to give the

school

and
performance (particularly
among girls), safety and
security of women and
girls, and the economic
and social development of
communities and nations.

Legal
Aid:
We
have
appointed a legal Lawyer and
counselor in our GRC to
provide free services to the
beneficiaries. The community
especially women cant afford
to give fees to lawyers and
suffer from traumas. To give
them peaceful life we have
also joint hands with DLSA. In
[Type text]

Page 16

Access to improved water

and sanitation facilities
does not, on its own,
necessarily
lead
to
improved health. There is
now very clear evidence
showing the importance of
hygienic
behavior,
in
particular
hand-washing
with soap at critical times:
after defecating and before
eating or preparing food.
Hand-washing with soap
can significantly reduce the
incidence
of
diarrhea,

which
is
the
second
leading cause of death
amongst children under
five years old. In fact,
recent studies suggest that
regular hand-washing with
soap at critical times can
reduce the number of
diarrhea bouts by almost
50 per cent.
Good
hand-washing
practices have also been
shown
to
reduce
the
incidence
of
other
diseases,
notably
pneumonia,
trachoma,
scabies, skin and eye
infections and diarrhearelated
diseases
like
cholera and dysentery. The
promotion of hand-washing
with soap is also a key
strategy for controlling the
spread of Avian Influenza
(bird flu).
HandWashing
These
topics
are
discussed
by
demonstration of steps
of
hand
washing,
Group discussion to
aware them when to
do hand wash, Display
of IEC materials. The
main objective is to
make people aware
about the importance
of hand washing and
the correct ways of
hand
washing.
To
inculcate the habit of
hand
washing especially
[Type text]

before eating food and

after defecation. In
every meeting a soap
and a small towel is
distributed to each and
every person .
SANITATION
In our meetings discussion
and Explanation were on
flow chart to aware the
importance of sanitation.
This is followed by group
discussion, display of IEC
materials, Audio visuals,
Rallies and street plays. We
arranged
meeting
for
Advocacy
with
stakeholders, RWA, , MCD
and Sanitation workers. We
also arranged Rallies to
protest
against
non
maintenance of CTC and
sanitation.
Many
times
meetings are held in the
center of the community
groups to sensitization and
use of intensive behavior
change. We also promoted
the
communication
method.
The
main
objective was to spread
information about the illhazards of open defecation
and to teach about the
correct use of toilets. We
took initiative to generate
the need of repair and
maintenance of already
existing CTCs amongst in
the community people by
survey and to promote the
need
of
construction
of Toilet.

Broadly there are seven

components
of
sanitation:
1. Safe drinking water
practices
2. Safe
disposal
of
human excreta
3. Safe
garbage
disposal
4. Safe hand washing
practices, spitting in
open, maturation at
public places
5. Personal health and
hygiene
6. Safe
disposal
of
animal excreta
7. Safe waste water
management
It
is
most
important
component of GRC. It is
necessary
to
aware
community
regarding
importance of washing of
hand, use of sanitation to
make the environment clean
and save the community from
unhygienic
structure
and
from
diseases.
1100
beneficiary in Old Delhi and
1200
beneficiaries
are
covered in 24 awareness
sessions in the community
along with the distribution of
wash kit to teach them
proper method of washing
hands, and the importance of
use of sanitation to be
hygienic. Special camps are
organized for training the
groups and the chain of
groups. There are four groups
formed with the name Asha,

SELF DEFENSE TRAINING

[Type text]

Page 19

As every day we are finding

cases regarding Molesting, Eve
Teasing, Rape, Sexual Abuse,
and Harassment both physical
and
mental
daily
we observed in the area of old
Delhi there is no protection and
safety for women and girls. It
has become very important to
give self defense training to our
community women. IMDT has
arranged special self defense
training with the collaboration
with Delhi Police Nanakpura
Head office for the protection of
female gender.
120 girls / women were
provided training for the safety
and protection of self respect
physically and mentally and
build the confidence in them to
handle all sorts of situations and
challenges they face in life.
Female gender is encouraged to
proceed further in life.
