Name of the Short Story: Rice and Bullets


Setting/s: One of the poor provinces in Luzon, Plaza mayor, Chinese Rice
Warehouse
Characters with description:
a.

Tura He is the protagonist, poor guy, and father of Ine, Clara and

Totoy, husband of Marta.


b.

Policemen officers who guards the warehouse.

c.

Mr. Remulla Who own the warehouse, first he is kind but at the

end he let his officers to shoot the crowd.


d. Marta She is the wife of Tura, mother of their three children.

Plot:
The author introduced the main characters and describes their
situation. When the crowd started to fire riot, the policemen starts to shoot
the people who started the riot.
They overtook the place from the group of Tura. Tura, as he tried to go home,
he was shot and lost his consciousness.
Point of view of the writer:

The author uses 3rd person point of view, because he uses he, him, his,
and they.

Setting/s: Rice Field, At the House of Nana Basiang.

Angela/Gela A little girl who waits to return of her mother from the
rice field.
Nana Sibbi - The mother of Gela unexpectedly bitten by a rice snake.
Nana Basiang A kind neighbor who watches Gela while her mother is
at work.
Pitong - The son of Nana Basiang and friend of Gela.
Don Tinoso - Owner of the rice field.
Tata Iban - Nana Basiang's husband and Pitong's father.

Plot:
The story is all about a girl named Gela who is waiting for her mothers
return from the rice field. While waiting, she met one of their neighbors Nana
Basiang who offers food to her and their house to keep her as company. She
met also Nana Basiangs son Pitong together they play some of the time to
keep pass by. Pitong does have something in his hand which Gela became
curious. In exchange to find out whats on Pitongs hand. He gave
consequence to kiss him on which Gela refuse to do. As the story goes,
Gelas mother, Nana Sibbi was found dead on the rice field bitten by a rice
snake. Nana Basiang pitied Gela for what happened to her mother and offer
to live with them. Pitong delivered a Beetle to Gelas custody. It crawled up to
her arm. In between her sobs, Gela giggles delightedly.
Point of view of the writer:
The writer wants the reader to be more aware of the environment. He
characterized the childhoods affection towards Gelas innocence, by this he
focus on how can a reader adjust on the little girl attitude. Another is the
usage of diversion to contemplate the part of the story. Gelas happiness can
be conclude in the form of reuniting to her mother, but instead the writer

uses a connection between the childhoods tricky memories which is playing


together with her friend Pitong who has an edible-insect Beetle to which Gela
found her temporary happiness for a while.

The writer introduced the main characters of the story and describes
the situation. It starts when the riot has begun and those policemen officers
start firing the crowd. They focus on the person who starts the riot then they
fire at him. This story focus on what are peoples attitudes and character
when turning at this point comes.

that comes like what Gela has encounter that her mother died by the bitten

of the rice snake. He wants that like the beetle, be strong in all
circumstances that everyone was facing right now.
