1.1 Science Safety

1.1 SCIENCE SAFETY

1. In case of an emergency, notify the
teacher.
2. Wear goggles when instructed.
3. Dispose of all lab materials according
to your teachers instructions.
4. Do not fool around or run in the lab.

5. Food, gum, and water are not

permitted in the lab.
6. Always clean your work area before
leaving the lab.
7. Treat all lab materials as if they are
hazardous.

8. Bring only necessary materials to the

lab.
9. Read all procedures carefully before
performing an experiment.
10. Students are not permitted in the
teacher prep room.

11. Notify the teacher if there is a spill

or broken glass- do not clean it by
yourself!
12. Do not leave a hot plate
unattended.
13. Carry microscopes with two hands
with one at the base.

Turn & Talk:

a) Which two rules do you think are the
most important?
b) Which rule do you think you are
most likely to forget about?
c) What is a possible consequence for a
student that does not follow the
rules?

The Scientific Method

What is
the name
of this
diagram?

8 Science Practices

INVESTIGATING PRACTICES:
Asking Questions
How does _______ affect ______?
Planning and Carrying Out Investigations
Manipulated Variable- what is tested out
Responding Variable- what is measured
Using Mathematical Thinking
Organize data- information collected in an
experiment

Jack wanted to see if plants would grow taller if they

were given very warm water. He thought if the plant
was given warm water, then it would grow taller than
a plant given normal tap water. He took two of the
same pots with the same soil and in the same room.
Jack watered the plants once a day with each type of
water and let them grow for three weeks. Then he
measured their height.
Manipulated Variable:
Responding Variable:

SENSEMAKING PRACTICES:
Developing and Using Models
Ex: diagrams, 3D objects, computer
simulations
Analyzing and Interpreting Data
Look for patterns in graphs and tables
Consider sources of error
Constructing Explanations
Use evidence to support an explanation

CRITIQUING PRACTICES:
Engaging in Argument from Evidence
Critique arguments from peers and look for
bias in sources
Communicating Information
Ex: writing an article, giving a speech
