JANICE AND KURT ARE PLANNING THEIR UPCOMING VACATION. READ THIS PASSAGE,
AND THEN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW

For each of the past eight years, Janice and Kurt have spent their vacation time at home, either working in
the garden or fixing up the house. This year, however, they are planning
to spend their July vacation somewhere else. Theyve checked the
Internet for weather information about areas of the country they might
like to visit. They are really eager to travel somewhere soon. In fact, if
they had free time right now, they would take their vacation immediately,
but they cant leave right now. They still have a couple of months to
explore their options.
So far, they have learned the following information. If they want to spend
their time near the water, they will have a hard time choosing among dozens of outstanding beach resorts.
For example, if they go to the beach in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the air temperature will be in the mid-70s in
July, and the water temperature will be in the low 70s. Thats very appealing to them. On the other hand, if
they chose to visit Miami Beach in July, both the air and the water temperatures would be considerably
warmer, around 85 degrees. That sounds wonderful to them, too. Janice and Kurt also like to go camping,
so vacationing in the mountains is another option. They could choose to visit the Rocky Mountains in
Colorado if they wanted cooler weather. In July, the temperature in the mountains can range from a high of
80 degrees to a low of 40 degrees. If they go to the Rockies, they will certainly have to plan for this type of
weather variation.
It is without a doubt a tough decision that Janice and Kurt are facing. They wish they were able to go to all of
the places they have researched. If they had more money and more time, they would be able to do exactly
that. In fact, they would have gone to both the beach and the mountains this year if they hadnt recently
spent so much of their savings on a new big-screen TV. They wish they had realized this earlier!

It all happened on the night of 6th July. A large truck bumped into a building in
the Maryland Street. The strange thing was the truck had no drivers at all. The
police started investigating the case immediately. The locals ask a simple
question: Where is the driver? If the police want to solve this mystery, they will
need the video recordings of the street. One of the locals claimed that the truck
had never been seen in the neighborhood before. He said: Were deeply
worried about that truck. We want to know whats happening in our town. If wed seen that truck before, wed
solve this mystery now.
The police have asked eleven people in the town till now. No one has uttered a significant word about that
night. The chief officer Amanda Slippers says that: This looks like a tough case. The truck plate belongs to
this town, but nobody has seen it here. The owner of the truck moved from the town years ago. And no one
knows where he moved. If we found the owner, we would probably solve this mystery.
A witness on the crime scene reported more interesting details about the event: There was a loud noise
coming from the truck while it was going towards the building and its speed.... I couldnt believe its speed. If
it had been slower, I would have seen the driver seat. But all I saw was a red truck going inside the bakery
as fast as it could. If a truck moves, then it has driver. Well, maybe we should change this fact with
mysterious red truck.

Sally: Hi Kate! I want to buy a new house. I cant decide on which one
to buy.
Kate: I can help you if you want.
Sally: Sure.
Kate: First of all, if you like landscapes, you should look for flats in the
suburbs. They are both cheap and near the lake.
Sally: Yes, youre right. I love landscapes. However, they are far from
the city center. I cant go to the city center every day if I get this new job in the center, Ill have to wake up
very early every day. If I had a car, Id think positive about them.
Kate: Hmmm. Why dont you look for the new buildings in the city center, then? There are many new flats in
the town.
Sally: Can you recommend any new flats for me?
Kate: If you have yesterdays local newspaper, Ill show you one of them.
Sally: Here you are.
Kate: Look at this one. Its right in the city center. If you live in the center, then everything will be around
you.
Sally: Kate, isnt this a bit expensive? I cant afford to buy this. If I had that amount of money, Id buy a
detached house.
Kate: There are many cheap bank credits. Ill buy one of them when I get the yearly promotion from my job.
Sally: Alright. Ill have a look at new campaigns on the internet. Thanks.

Unfortunately, natural disasters are rather frequent. Humans often wish that we were not so helpless in the
face of Mother Natures power. For example, if there is an earthquake in the middle of the ocean, all nearby
countries are vulnerable to tsunamis. If a volcano erupts, ash will enter the atmosphere, sometimes with
long-lasting effects. For instance, ash from the 1883 volcanic eruption of Krakatoa in Indonesia lowered the
average global temperatures by 1.2 degrees Celsius for the following year. We all feel especially sad if an
earthquake or a tornado occurs in a populated area. Losses can be huge. Even if people escape with their
lives, their communities may be destroyed. In the days following the event, shocked survivors may ask
questions like If the city had had stricter building codes, would the school have remained standing? or If
the warning siren had sounded sooner, could more people have escaped? After the event, everyone wishes
that the disaster had been less severe. Sometimes, however, we hear happy stories. In 2004, a ten-year-old
English girl was vacationing with her family in Thailand. She noticed the sea drawing back and heard a
strange noise. She had learned in school that if this happened, a tsunami would likely
follow. She knew that people can survive this kind of disaster only if they run for high
ground immediately. Her family shouted a warning minutes before the wave arrived.
Present and Future

Past Unreal

The winner of our competition, Emma Wyatt from London, tells us about her bad day...
Id been looking for a new job for a while, as I really hated my present one. I didnt get on very well with my
boss and I found the job really boring, so it was definitely time for a change. I had seen an advert in the local
paper for a job that sounded absolutely perfect for me. I had to have it! I spent a long time on my CV and
wrote a really convincing covering letter. You can guess what happened On the day of the interview I
overslept! I must have forgotten to set my alarm the night before. I jumped out of bed, quickly put some
clothes on and rushed out the door but I was never going to make it in time. If only Id set my alarm, I
wouldve been on time! I would normally take the bus but, as I was running late, I decided the tube might be
quicker. I ran down the escalators and jumped onto the train, just as the doors were closing. I breathed a
sigh of relief I might just make it after all. After a couple of minutes I noticed that other people on the train
were looking at me strangely. Suddenly, I had a dreadful feeling. I looked down at my feet. I still had my
slippers on! I must have been in such a rush to leave the house that I forgot to put my smart black shoes on.
This was a disaster! What would the interviewer think of me? I still really
wanted the job so I decided to carry on. I got off the train and rushed
outside. It had started to rain and I had forgotten my umbrella. It was
only a short walk to my destination but I decided to take a taxi so I
wouldnt get too wet. I stood at the edge of the road waiting for a taxi
when a huge truck drove past. I had been standing right next to a big
puddle and I was now completely covered in dirty water! I couldnt go to
the interview looking like this. I decided to turn back and go home.
Feeling very upset, I crossed the road to the tube station. I obviously wasnt looking because the next thing I
knew, I was waking up in a hospital bed with lots of cuts and bruises and a broken leg! I wish Id never got
out of bed that morning
