Anthony Herman Gerard Fokker was born in 1890, in Kediri, Java (today Indonesia),

one of the Dutch colonies at that time. When he was a child, his family moved back to their
native Holland. They settled in Harlem, where Anthony got elementary and high school
education. He was not a great student, making it through high school exams with the help of
his self invented crabbing-machine. At the age of sixteen, he got interested in aviation after
witnessing his first flight, but real motive came after he read the news about Wilbur Wright's
flight in France. By the time he was twenty, Anthony designed two monoplanes and taught
himself how to fly. After making his first flight, he earned a German pilot license.
