SCORING

The Alabama bar exam is a two-day exam consisting


of the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE).

The MEE and MPT scores are scaled to the MBE,


with the MBE weighted 50%, the MEE 30% and the
MPT 20%. The scores are combined to determine if
the applicant has achieved a passing score of 260.

Day 1: Two 90-minute Multistate Performance


Test questions (MPT in the AM) and six 30-minute
Multistate Essay Exam questions (MEE in the PM).
Day 2: Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question,
multiple-choice exam.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEES


Applicant Must File Both a Law Student Registration
And A Bar Exam Application.
Law student registration filing fees are: free if filed
within the first 60 days of law school, $50 if filed after
60 days but within 180 days, $100 if filed after 180
days but within 390 days, $250 if filed after 390 days.
Bar exam application must be filed by September
30 for the February exam and by February 1 for
the July exam. First time takers who are Alabama
residents pay $575. Non-resident, applicants who
have previously applied, foreign-educated or foreignlicensed and UBE Score Transfer applicants pay
$575. Reciprocity applicants pay $875.

RECIPROCITY

The Alaska bar exam is a two-day exam consisting of


the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE).

Alaska has an admission without examination rule,


with reciprocity provisions, for attorney applicants.
Applicant must have taken and passed a UBE exam
and engaged in the active practice of law in one or
more states, territories, or D.C. for five of the seven
years immediately preceding the date of application.
The applicant must also have passed the MPRE and
meet other admission requirements.

Day 1: Six 30-minute Multistate Essay Exam questions


(MEE in the AM) and two 90-minute Multistate
Performance Test questions (MPT in the PM).
Day 2: Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question,
multiple-choice exam.

Acceptance of MBE Score
Arizona does not accept the transfer of any MBE
score from an exam taken in another jurisdiction.
Admission on Motion
A member in good standing of a reciprocating state
bar may be admitted on motion if applicant has
engaged in active practice of law for active practice for
3 of 5 years preceding application and is a graduate
of an ABA accredited law school. For complete details
contact the Arizona Committee on Examinations.
Admission by UBE
Applicants who have earned a UBE score in another
jurisdiction may be eligible for admission to
Arizona by transfer of UBE score. You must achieve a
score of 273 or greater, be a member in good
standing and graduate from an ABA accredited
law school. The Arizona UBE does not include:
Community Property or Arizona Constitutional Law.

The jurisdiction component consists of an online
course on AZ law. The time limit for reciprocity is 5

135 or more. An applicant may transfer from another
jurisdiction a Multistate Bar Examination scaled score
of 135 or more for use in the immediately succeeding.

WINTER 2017 BAR EXAM: FEBRUARY 21-23

SCORING

The California bar exam is a three-day exam.

Winter 2017 Exam


The MBE score is 35% of the total score and the essay
questions and Performance Tests combine to account
for 65% of the total score.

Day 1: Morning session is three essay exams given


over three hours and can come from any test subject.
Afternoon session is one three-hour California
Performance Test.
Day 2: Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question,
multiple-choice exam.
Day 3: Morning session is three essay exams given
over three hours and can come from any test subject.
Afternoon session is one three-hour California
Performance Test.

Summer 2017 Exam


The MBE score is 50% of the total score, while the
written portion accounts for the other 50%.
A passing score of 1,440 on a 2,000 point scale is
required for both the winter and summer exams,
based on the combined scaled scores of the
California Performance Test, the essay questions and
the MBE.

SUMMER 2017 BAR EXAM : JULY 25-26


In summer 2017, the CA Bar Exam will be two days
instead of three.
Day 1: Consists of a morning session during which
three one-hour essay questions will be administered.
The afternoon session will consist of two one-hour
essay questions and one 90-minute Performance Test.
Day 2: Will be the nationally administered MBE exam.

UBE
Admission on Motion
Admission to practice law without taking the bar
based upon admission in a reciprocal jurisdiction
and active practice of law for three of five years
immediately preceding application to Colorado. On
Motion applications may be filed at any time. Must
have a valid MPRE score not more than two years
prior to date of application. Must complete mandatory
Colorado professionalism course.
UBE Score Transfer
Admission to practice law based upon a UBE score
achieved in another state or territory of the United
States or in the District of Columbia within three years
preceding application for admission to the bar. UBE
scores achieved more than three years but less than
five years preceding application may be combined
with two years of law practice experience immediately
preceding application in order to qualify under this
rule. A UBE score must be at least that required to
pass the Colorado bar based upon standards of
performance set by the Colorado Supreme Court.
All applicants must be in good standing in any and
all jurisdictions where they are licensed to practice,
and must complete character and fitness, MPRE, and
Colorado Professionalism Course requirements.

FOREIGN LAW SCHOOL GRADUATES


Permission may be requested to sit for the exam based
on a non-U.S. legal education if that applicants law
school was an English-speaking common law country,
the applicant is admitted in the country from which he/
she graduated and applicant has practiced law for five of
the preceding seven years. A petition for determination of
eligibility must be filed, along with payment of $100.

PROFESSIONALISM COURSE
Colorado requires exam applicants take a course on
Professionalism prior to admission to the bar or within
six months of admission.

RECIPROCITY

The Connecticut bar exam is a two-day exam


consisting of the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE).

Acceptance of MBE Score


A transferred MBE score for purposes of admission
in Connecticut will not result in a transferrable UBE
score. In order to obtain a UBE score, an applicant
must sit for both days of the UBE in Connecticut.
Connecticut will accept a scaled MBE score from a
concurrent exam taken in another state or an exam
from 3 prior administrations taken in another state;
the applicant must have been successful on each
exam for which the score was originally achieved.

Clerkship Requirement
To become licensed in Delaware, all applicants must
complete a five month clerkship in Delaware, under
the supervision of a qualified Delaware attorney who
must certify the clerkship has been completed. The
five month requirement constitutes 21 forty-hour
work weeks and may be aggregated. Applicants
can initiate the clerkship process while they are
still enrolled in law school. There is a checklist of
mandatory legal activities and tasks to be completed
during the clerkship, which is available from the
Delaware Board of Bar Examiners website.
State and Federal Background Checks
Students must undergo both a state and federal
background check, which should be started as early as
possible, as they can take up to 12 weeks to complete.

The District of Columbia bar exam is a two-day exam


consisting of the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE).

Acceptance of MBE or D.C. Bar Exam Score


An applicant may be eligible for admission without
examination if the applicant has achieved a scaled
score of 266 or higher in another UBE jurisdiction. The
passing UBE scaled score must be achieved no more
than 5 years before the filing of the application.
An applicant may be admitted without exam if applicant
received a scaled MBE score of 133 or higher on an
exam upon which applicant was admitted in another
jurisdiction, achieved a scaled score of 75 or better on
MPRE, and has a J.D. or LL.B. from an ABA accredited

Law must be received in the Office of Bar Admissions
by the deadlines published in current Rules
Governing Admission to the Practice of Law. Late
applications with late fees are accepted by deadlines
published in the Rules. The deadline is July 6, 2016
(late deadline is October 5, 2016) for the February
2017 exam and December 7, 2016 (late deadline is
March 1, 2017) for the July 2017 exam.

Monday thereafter. If your application is not received
by the Board by the deadline, the Board will only
accept the application upon payment of a late fee of
$150 if the Board receives the application within seven
calendar days of the deadline. If the Board receives
the application between the seventh and fourteenth
calendar days after the deadline, the Board will only
accept the application upon payment of a late fee of
$300. No applications will be accepted more than
fourteen days following the application deadline.

SCORING

If an attorney has been admitted by examination to


practice in one or more jurisdictions in the United
States and has been in the active practice of law for
at least 3 of the preceding 5 years in a jurisdiction in
which he or she is licensed, the attorney may elect to
take only the first day of the Maine Bar Examination.
In addition, these attorneys are not required to use a
Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) score. If applicant
elects to take the MBE again, the higher score will be
used to calculate the total score.
An applicant who has taken the Multistate Bar
Examination (MBE) within 61 months prior to the
current administration of the Maine examination
may elect to take only the first day of the Maine Bar
Examination and use the prior MBE score. If applicant
elects to take the MBE again, the higher score will be
used to calculate the total score.
An applicant who qualifies under MBAR 10(e)(1)(i) or
(ii) and who has a MBE score of 155 or better on an
examination which the applicant passed, is qualified
to elect to take only the first two questions on the
Maine Bar Examination.
Attorneys who have been in active practice in New
Hampshire and Vermont for at least three years
immediately preceding the date upon which the
motion is filed will qualify for reciprocity.

Each essay exam question is worth six points and the


MPT question is worth nine points, total essay score

two and added to the MBE scaled score. To pass, an
applicant must achieve a total scaled score of 406
out of 600 points.

The Minnesota bar exam is a two-day exam


consisting of the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE).

Eligibility for Admission by UBE Score


An applicant may be eligible for admission without
examination under Rule 4A(4) if the applicant has
received a scaled score of 260 or higher earned in
another jurisdiction on the UBE and the score is certified
as a UBE score by the National Conference of Bar
Examiners. The applicant shall submit evidence of the
score and a complete application for admission to the
Board within 36 months of the date of the qualifying
examination being used as the basis for the admission.

Eligibility for Admission by MBE Score

A passing score on the Mississippi bar exam is 132 on


a 200-point scale. The MBE is weighted 40%, the six

registration and application. Law student registration
fees are $100 if filed by September 30 following the
completion of two (2) semesters of law school and
$300 thereafter. If preregistered, application update

Acceptance of UBE Score
Applicants may transfer a UBE score of 260 or higher
earned within the twenty-four months preceding the
date of the application. Missouri does not condition
acceptance of a transferred UBE score upon the
applicants passing status or admission to the bar
where the UBE was earned.
Admission on Motion
Admission without exam possible if applicant has for
five of the last 10 years engaged in the full-time practice
of law primarily at or from an office physically located in
a jurisdiction in which the applicant was licensed. Must
also hold an active license in a jurisdiction that admits
Missouri attorneys without exam. Applicant must be a
graduate of an ABA accredited law school.

MISCELLANEOUS
Applicant must have completed all requirements for
J.D. degree by July 1 or February 1 in order to sit for
the exam. Degree must be conferred before results
will be released. Missouri Educational Component
Test (MECT) is a mandatory 33-question, open-book
test for all applicants. Applicants must complete this
with a passing score of 28 out of 33, and mail in the
Certificate of Completion no earlier than the date of
submission of the initial application and no later than
one year after passing the bar examination.

Beginning October 1, 2016, an applicant may transfer

New Jersey Bar. The score must have been earned no
more than 36 months prior to submitting a completed

satisfy all other requirements for admission to the New

At the time of printing New Jersey does not have motion
admission reciprocity with any other jurisdiction but the
New Jersey Supreme Court has announced plans to

RECIPROCITY
Acceptance of MBE Score
New Mexico will accept an MBE score from a
concurrent exam taken in another jurisdiction
provided the sending jurisdiction agrees to forward
your MBE score to New Mexico upon receipt of the
score from the ACT so that your NM results are not
delayed. The Board does not accept a score from
a previously administered exam, regardless of the
score achieved.
New Admission By Motion Rule: NMRA 15-107
An applicant who otherwise meets all requirements
of NMRA 15-103 and 15-104 may apply admission by
motion so long as applicant has been admitted to
practice in one or more reciprocal states (see rules
for list of reciprocal states); has not been denied
certification due to character and fitness in any state;
has not taken and failed the NM bar exam within
5 years; is a member in good standing in every
jurisdiction where admitted to practice law; submits
evidence of qualified MPRE score; and submits
evidence of attendance at required NM law course.

on demand course consisting of approximately 15 hours
of videotaped lectures with embedded questions which
must be answered correctly before advancing within
the offered lectures. The NYLE is a 50 item, two hour,
open book, multiple choice online exam administered
at select dates and times throughout the year. The
passing score for the NYLE is 60% (an applicant must
answer 30 out of 50 questions correctly). Written
materials are available on the New York Board of Law
Examiners website. Applicants can take the NYLC and
NYLE up to one year before or three years after sitting
for the UBE, subject to the application filing deadline
of the Court of Appeals (requires filing within 3 years
from the date when the applicant sits for the UBE).
Applicants must complete the NYLC before they can
register for the NYLE.

$1,500 for applications filed during the remainder of
the application periods.
If the applicant has been admitted to practice law for
more than one (1) year in another state, the District of
Columbia, or another country at the time the application
is filed, the applicant shall pay an additional fee of $750.
If the application is withdrawn or the applicant fails to sit
for the examination, the applicant shall not be entitled
to a refund of the application fee(s) or to have the
application fee(s) credited to a later application.

Applications for Admission


Based on an Existing UBE Score.
Applications based on an existing UBE Score will not
be accepted for filing until May 1, 2017, and may not
be over three years old at the time the application is
filed. On and after that date, these applications may
be filed at any time. If based on a UBE Score from
another jurisdiction, the applicant must have the
score transferred to South Carolina by the National
Conference of Bar Examiners.

ADMISSION ON MOTION
South Carolina does not provide for admission on
motion. In narrow situations, a special application
may be made by a dean or tenured professor of the
University of South Carolina or Charleston School of
Law. Contact the Supreme Court of South Carolina
for more information. Otherwise, exam required of
all applicants.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
In place of the Bridge the Gap Program which is
currently required for admission, the amended rule
requires applicants to successfully complete a Course
of Study on South Carolina Law.This Course of Study
will be an on-line course that can be completed in
less than 8 hours.The South Carolina Board of Law
Examiners is currently developing this Course of
Study, and it is anticipated that this Course of Study
will be available by January 1, 2017, at the latest.

MILITARY SPOUSE PROVISIONAL ADMISSION

The Virginia bar exam is a two-day exam.

The dependent spouse of an active duty service


member stationed in the Commonwealth of Virginia,
who has been admitted to practice law before the
court of last resort of any state or territory of the United
States or of the District of Columbia and who meets
all other requirements of Rule 1A:8, may apply to the
Board for Military Spouse Provisional Admission.
The Military Spouse Provisional Admission filing
fee is $400. This fee covers the cost of processing
the Application, investigating matters contained
in the applicants completed Character & Fitness
Questionnaire, and preparing of the Character Report.

Day 1: Nine essay questions plus 10 short answer


questions with emphasis on Virginia law.

One of the requirements for admission on motion is that

of law for at least three of the last five years immediately

Washingtons pass score on the MPRE is 85. The
MPRE score is valid if you earned the score three
years prior to sitting for the UBE or up to one year
after sitting for the UBE.

FILING DEADLINES AND FEES


All Winter 2017 applications must be received by
October 5. Applicants who register any time after the
appropriate filing deadline must pay an additional late
filing fee penalty. Late filing applications need to be
received by November 7 for the winter exam along
with the late filing fee. Summer 2017 applications
must be received by first week of March. Late filing
applications need to be received by the first full week
of April along with the late filing fee.

The passing score on the WLC is 80%. You may


take the WLC any time after filing your application.
Applicants must pass the WLC within 40 months of
passing the UBE in Washington.

RECIPROCITY
Ube Score Transfer
If you have a UBE score of 270 or higher from another
state, you can transfer your score to Washington for
up to 40 months after the date of the administration
of the UBE in which the score was earned. The MPRE
score must be acquired three years before or after
the date you sat for the UBE.4

may satisfy this requirement by proof of practice in
more than a single jurisdiction and under more than
one provision of this rule.
