Whitby January 18,2003 | Gor | Page tof 8 U BOP WEDGELOCK AND WEDGELOCK BALANCE CHAMBER WEDGELOCK (Figure 1) ‘The U BOP wedgelock is hydraulically operated locking device which will keep rams mechanically locked, even if BOP OPEN pressure is applied or the WEDGELOCK LOCK pressure is bled off. Designed for subsea operations, the wedgelocks lock rams as effectively as the locking screw assembly used on land and platform BOP stacks. Wedgelocks are interchangeable with this standard locking screw assembly, and a preventer ean be converted in the field from manual to remote hydraulic locking without difficulty. Il. | WEDGELOCK PRESSURE BALANCE CHAMBER ‘The wedgelock pressure balance system prevents the possibility that the unbalanced hydrostatic head pressure of the operating fluid might unlock the wedgelocks. Although this problem is not anticipated to occur in water depths of less than 150 feet, all wedgelocks should be fitted with pressure balance chambers. With this system, the wedgelock housing is filled with a lubricant (Cameron #590 fluid), which is then connected with a volume of the same lubricant within the diaphragm of the pressure balance chamber. Since the seawater is in direct contact with the outside of this diaphragm, the fluid in the wedgelock housing is at the same pressure as the surrounding seawater, balancing the hydrostatic head of the operating fluid on the opening side of the wedgelock piston. This ensures that the wedgelocks will not unlock unless WEDGELOCK UNLOCK pressure is applied from the surface. II OPERATION AND MODIFICATIONS A. CONVERSION FROM OLD TO NEW STYLE WEDGELOCK PRESSURE CHAMBER ‘The design of the pressure balance chamber was modified to allow easier access to the BOP's lower bonnet bolts. The new design will not interfere with pneumatic or hydraulic wrenches or the hydraulic bonnet bolt tensioner used to tighten Cameron hydraulic bonnet, bolts. The new chamber may be bolted to the wedgelock in the exact same spot that the old chamber was located, using the same bolts and bolt holes. If'a customer prefers to tack-weld the chamber to the housing, he should follow the instructions given in Figure 2 Original Date: May 29, 1980 U BOP ‘The Cameron U BOP is the most widely used ram-type BOP for land, platform and subsea applications worldwide and offers the widest range of sizes of any Cameron ram-type BOP. Like all other Cameron preventers, the rams in the U BOP are pressure-energized. Well bore pressure acts on the rams to in- tease the sealing force and maintain the seal in case of hydraulic pressure loss. Seal integrity is actu ally improved by increased well bore pressure. Other features of the U BOP include: + Bonnet seal carrier is available to eliminate the need for high makeup torque on bonnet bolts and nuts, The new 13-5/8" bodies have a bore seal. Therefore you can add the seal carrier without additional re-work. All other sizes require modification to accept the seal carrier. + Manual or Hydraulic operating systems available. + Hydraulically operated locking mechanisms, wedgelocks, lock the ram hydraulically and hold the rams mechanically closed even when actuating pressure is released. The operating system can be interlocked using sequence caps to ensure that the wedgelock is retracted before pressure is applied to open the BOP. + For subsea applications, a pressure balance chamber is used with the wedgelocks to eliminate the possibility of the wedgelock becoming unlocked due to hydrostatic pressure. + Retrofit to UM Bonnet is available to provide more shearing force without the need for shear bonnets, large bore bonnets, or tandem boosters. Other features include hydraulically opening bonnets, forged body and a wide selection of rams to meet all applications. See page 53 for rams available to fit the U BOP. Whitby January 18,2003 | Gor | Pagedof 8 D. OPERATION OF WEDGELOCKS One four-way valve and one pair of hydraulic lines can be used to operate all of the wedgelocks in a drilling hookup. All of the wedgelocks can be locked with one locking line, and unlocked with one unlocking line. This is possible because wedgelocks that close on open preventers merely push against the connecting rod, causing no damage to the wedge or the rod. When closing the BOP, WEDGELOCK LOCK pressure should be bled off until after the BOP CLOSE function has been completed. Once a BOP has been closed and locked, locking pressure should be bled off. This will allow the operation of other U BOPs in the stack without effecting the lock or seal of the locked BOP. WHEN OPENING A LOCKED BOP, WEDGELOCK UNLOCK PRESSURE MUST BE APPLIED AND A TIME DELAY ALLOWED BEFORE BOP OPEN PRESSURE IS APPLIED. Failure to allow the wedgelocks to fully unlock before applying BOP OPEN pressure can result in damage to the stroking wedgelock by the simultaneously stroking ram piston. cat ete Coetobarts 1990 EB 5530 Page 4 of 8 Got January 14, 2003 January 16, 2003 B.C.
