How to deal with

difficult colleagues
businessinsider.in

isrespect can

ways i n t he
office. It can
be obvious, or subtle. It can
stem from the organisational culture, or just some rotten apples in the workplace.
You can bring it upon yourself with unprofessional behaviour, or be subjected to it
for no fault of your own. Its
important to recognise these
telltale signs of disrespect if
and when they crop up.

Subject of gossip
Gossip might be part of almost every office but if youre
constantly in the workplace
rumour mill, thats an issue.
If your colleagues are talking about your personal or
professional life, its a sign
that youre not getting the
respect you deserve.

Being neglected
This is a sneaky form of disrespect. Things seem fine
with your co-workers, but
you feel like youre just not
being heard. No one listens
to your pitches at meetings
and your office-wide emails
go unread.
According to career coach J
T ODonnell, this cold shoulder technique could indicate
that you dont add perceived
value to the conversation.
Figure out if you need to
change or youre just dealing
with rude co-workers.

Theres nothing more frustrating than having a colleague take credit for your
work or steal your idea. If
this becomes a pattern, its
an indication of disrespect.

Unnecessary criticism

Condescending remarks

If you mess up, you should

brace for the possibility
that your boss will call you
out. However, if youre dealing with junior co-workers
chastising you over minor
situations, thats an indication that theres some bad
blood in the office. Constant,
destructive criticism is a
sure sign that youre being
targeted.

A condescending coworker or group of

make a bad day
unbearable. This
kind of behaviour
makes you feel irrelevant and is designed to put you in
your place, even
though its often
disguised as reasonable or friendly.

Body language
Watch out for your colleag ues body lang uage
when youre talking to them.
Distracted behaviour, lack of
eye contact, sneering, or eye
rolling are all bad signs.

Wasting time
W hen you dont respect
someone, you dont see their
time as valuable. That coworker who keeps interrupting and attempting to offload their extra work on you
isnt just obtuse. They dont
value your precious time.

Bad feeling
If you feel disrespected at work,

up those feelings.
Grapple with the
idea. Consider
whether or not youre
being oversensitive or misunderstanding something. If
you stay honest with yourself and that doesnt seem
to be the case, then theres a
strong chance that your coworkers arent treating you
properly

that tells you how many steps youve
taken, how many calories youre burning and all kinds of other fitness facts.
After that, you decide to work on losing
those pounds.
However, according to a new study
published in the Journal of Medical
Association, fitness trackers dont actually work. Study author John Jakicic
of the University of Pittsburgh, who received funding from wearable maker
Jawbone Inc, conducted the research
by gathering a group of 471 adults aged
18 to 35 who wanted to lose weight.

All the participants went through the

traditional low-calorie diet, peppered
with physical activity and group counselling. After six months, half of the
participants added a wearable to track
their progress, while the other half
started self-monitoring their diet and
exercise using a website.
Following the two-year study, the
people in the standard group who selfreported lost 13 pounds on average,
while those who wore the wearable
lost 7.7 pounds.
The reason, according to Jakicic
and his team, is that the wearable
gives people a false sense of security
knowing that the steps make up for the
overeating. Another reason, they believe, could be that the fitness tracker
discourages rather than motivates
people. The final reason, they concluded, was that people lose interest

Swedens Ice Hotel will soon
keep one of its wings frozen all
year round. Yngve Bergqvist,
the owner of the hotel, announced that a part of the hotel
will accommodate 20 handcarved art rooms with ice
sculptures and beds.
This wing will stay open yearround, while during winter,
the hotel will reconstruct 15
suites. To keep the new wing
cool during the spring and
summer months, the hotel will
