Innovation Conference 2010
21 - 22 July 2010
The Hilton Hotel | Sandton

Knowledge Resources in collaboration with Mindstir Consulting and the Da Vinci Institute are proud to present the Innovation
Conference 2010: The Burning Platform.
Innovation is crucial for long-term survival and success in today’s competitive marketplace. For the country, innovation is a source of
increasing wealth in the economy. To businesses, innovation can increase productivity through improving quality, efficiency, production, etc.
All businesses, no matter what their field of expertise, can and must innovate.
The global economic crisis forced a burning platform dilemma on many a company, mobilising unprecedented creative thinking and strategic
action. Many South African companies responded innovatively, while some inadvertently focused on survival, efficiency and cost-cutting,
and thereby unintentionally stifling innovation in the short term. The Innovation Conference aims to both celebrate South African innovation
successes (despite the global economic scenario) and to re-emphasise the role of innovation in facilitating growth and sustainability.
This two-day conference will showcase some of SA’s best innovation case studies and strategic imperatives to apply in your organisation,
be it corporate, SMME or government.
Our excellent speakers from various industries will inspire you to ensure that your organisation not only survives, but thrives!
Innovation case studies from: Best Practice reports on:
• British American Tobacco • Creating a culture of innovation
• Hollard Insurance • Innovation for sustainability
• Sappi • Design thinking
• Idea Bounty • Rewarding innovation
• SMME’s • Recent SA Innovation Maturity Results
• And more! • And more!

To find out where companies are in their innovation practice and to provide ongoing support to delegates and all those involved in innovation, The Da Vinci Institute is
running a broad-based survey within its theme of the Management of Innovation. The study leads up to and serves as an important input to the conference.
All respondents are entitled to:
> A free emailed executive summary of the report.
> A free high-level report comparing your performance to that of your peers.
> More than 15% discount (if you attended the conference) on a full company report (R5 000 instead of R6 000).
> Joining the Da Vinci Institute Community of Practice on the Management of Innovation.
Even if you cannot attend the conference, you will still receive your own emailed copy of the report’s executive summary.
There is as yet very little available data on the maturity of innovation practice in South Africa. This study aims to provide critical insights into the state of innovation
practice across major industries in South Africa. The study will also help you strengthen your organisation’s innovation practice through benchmarking against industry
peers and give you insight into the trends and strategies pursued across industries. Specifically, the research looks at:
> your views of innovation
> your strategies, processes and resources for innovation GO TO http://research.davinci.ac.za/innovation/Survey.htm
> how you measure innovation.
The survey takes only 20 minutes to complete. All information provided is kept strictly confidential; only broad trends and indicators will be published.

Ian Kruger, Director, Da Vinci Research, Da Vinci Institute
Da Vinci Institute is leading a study into the state of innovation practice amongst South African organisations in order to inform debate around the
Management of Innovation. The research is based on work done by Arthur D. Little Inc., from whom we have taken his innovation framework as a guideline
for structuring the questions. There were two purposes for this: the first relates to the hope that we can relate our research to theirs and to contextualise it
in South Africa Secondly, this particular framework looks to the underlying platform for driving and sustaining innovation right throughout the organisation.
This provides a suitable tool to determine the state of Innovation Practice in South African Organisations. The Da Vinci Institute is inviting a broad range of
organisations to do a self-assessment of the maturity of their organisation’s innovation practice. Trends and insights will be discussed at the conference.
