CHAPTER 3
FRAME RULES AND BASIC DIMENSIONS
STANDARD DEFINITION - The kart should facilitate single seating without any roof and open
cockpit. It should have 4 nonaligned wheels that are in contact with the ground; the front two
wheels must control the direction. The other two rear tires must be connected by a one-piece
axle, which transmits the power.
1. DIMENSIONS a. Technical Specification:
b. Wheelbase-The Wheelbase of the Kart must be between 42-55 inches.
c. Track Width-The smaller track width (front or rear) must be no less than 75% of the
wheelbase of the Kart.
d. Overall Length- The overall length of the Kart must not be more than 70 inches without a
front and/or rear body panels.
e. Overall Width- 60 inches including the front or Rear Tires.
f. Height The maximum height of the Kart must be less than 40 inches, excluding the height
of the driver while sitting in proper driving position.
g. Ground Clearance- With the driver aboard there must be a minimum of 25.4 mm (1 inch)
of static ground clearance measured from the lowest point (except tires) of the Kart, under
the complete Kart. No compensation (like chain sprocket, brake disc) in ground clearance
would be entertained. Ground clearance would be measured in similar lines to that of IS
9435.
2. Frame Technical Specification
a. Frame is the part of the chassis, which supports the rest part of the Kart. It must be
sufficient resistant to be able to absorb the forces produced during dynamic motion of
the kart.
b. The pipe/tube used for the fabrication of chassis and its parts must be seamless. Seamed
tubes are strictly not allowed. Teams are free to choose the cross sectional geometry of
the structured member of the frame.
c. Material should be certified from any of the material testing laboratories for its chemical

CHAPTER 4
DRIVER SAFETY GEAR REQUIREMENT
1. Driver Safety Gears - The following are the minimum requirements and restrictions that
will be enforced through technical inspection, at any stage of competition. Noncompliance
if any observed by the inspection/organizing/judging committee members must be
corrected/amended by the participating teams and no Karts without passing the technical
inspection would be allowed to participate further in the event. All the parts of Drivers
Safety Gear must meet the required rating (specified). No driver would be allowed to drive
the Kart without the complete drivers safety gear in any of the dynamic event. The
complete drivers gear of FKDC will consist of the following items.
a. Drivers Suit- A fire resistant one-piece suit, made from a minimum of 1 layer that covers
the body from the neck down to the ankles and the wrists. The suit must be certified to
either one of the following standards and be labeled as such:
i. SFI 3-2A/1 (or higher)
ii. FIA Standard 1986

Why do I need a racing suit?

A driving suit serves one simple purpose: fire protection. In a sport that combines high speeds with combustible liquids, a fire suit
is necessary to protect yourself in a daring pastime. Your skin is a lot more precious than a few layers of flame-retardant fabric,
after all. The other simple answer: because your sanctioning body requires it.
What should I look for in the ideal racing suit?
A high level of protection, the requisite certification, light weight, good fit, and features. Well get into each of those in a bit.
What is the difference between FRC and Nomex?
Fire-retardant cotton (FRC) suits areas the name suggestsmade with cotton that is treated with a fire-retardant chemical.
Common FRC brands used in racing suits are Proban, Banox, and Pyrovatex. One drawback of FRC is that the level of protection
it offers diminishes with laundering. Nomex is a synthetic Aramid fiber made by DuPont. It offers more protection than FRC, and
is less likely to degrade when washed, but it is usually more expensive.

b. Underclothing- It is strongly recommended that all drivers wear fire resistant

underclothing (long pants and long sleeve t-shirt) under their approved driving suit. This

Formula Kart Design Challenge

http://fmae.in/pages/about_fkdc.php

fire resistant underclothing should be made of an acceptable fire resistant material and
should cover the drivers body completely from neck down to ankles and also the wrists.
Note: If you do not wear fire resistant underclothing, it is strongly recommended that you wear
cotton underclothing (t-shirt and long underpants) under your approved driving suit.

c. Helmet- A well-fitting closed face helmet that meets one of the following certifications and
is labeled as such:
i. Snell K2000, K2005, K2010, M2000, M2005, M2010, SA2000, SA2005,
SA2010 or equivalent
ii. SFI 31.2A, SFI 31.1/2005
iii. FIA 8860-2004, FIA 8860-2010

Manufacturers who participate in the SFI Program and certify their

helmets to the SFI specifications will display conformance labels on
the inside of their helmets. The SFI label is proof to consumers that
they are purchasing a quality-assured product that has been tested
in a continuing effort to improve motorsports safety.

NOTE: Open face helmets are not allowed. All helmets to be used in the competition must be
presented during Technical Inspection where approved helmets will be stickered. The organizer
reserves the right to impound all non-approved helmets until the end of the competition.

d. Balaclava- A balaclava which covers the drivers head, hair and neck, made of an
acceptable fire resistant material as or a full helmet skirt of acceptable fire resistant
material. The balaclava requirement applies to drivers of either gender, with any hair
length.

Read and Follow the Rulebook Judiciously!!

Formula Kart Design Challenge

http://fmae.in/pages/about_fkdc.php

NOTE: A balaclava, also known as a balaclava helmet or ski mask, is a form of clothed headgear designed
to expose only part of the face. Depending on style and how it is worn, only the eyes, mouth and nose, or
just the front of the face are unprotected. Versions with a full-face opening may be rolled into a hat to
cover the crown of the head or folded down as a collar around the neck.

e. The neck support must be a full circle (360) and SFI rated. Horseshoe collars are not
allowed. Simpson, RCI, GForce, Deist or Leaf Racing Products supply neck collars that meet
this requirement.
The SFI label is proof to consumers that they are
purchasing a quality-assured product that has been
tested in a continuing effort to improve motorsports
safety.

NOTE - The above type of combined head and neck restraints are not required and allowed in
FKDC.

f. Gloves Leather gloves with extra foam are acceptable.

NOTE: The gloves must be multilayered with extra foam sandwiched between them.
Other Gloves- the below kind of gloves are strictly not allowed.

http://fmae.in/pages/about_fkdc.php

g. Shoes- Fire resistant shoes made from acceptable fire resistant material must be certified
to the standard and labeled as such:
i. SFI 3.3
ii. FIA 8856-2000

NOTE: Sport shoes/Canvas shoes/Leather shoes/Industrial safety shoes are not allowed at any
point of the event.

D. Brake Test: After clearing Technical inspection teams will advance for Brake Test. Brake test
does not carry any points/score but every Kart has to qualify this test to ensure its
existence further in the competition.
a. Process: Kart must be accelerated to 30 km/hr. on 50 m straight patch and all the
wheels must get locked when the brakes are applied.
b. Kart speed will be checked using a radar gun. It is mandatory to reach this speed.
c. After qualifying the brake test the Kart will be affixed with Brake Test Okay
sticker.
Note: Qualifying the Technical Scrutiny and Brake test is mandatory to participate further in other
dynamic activities.
E.

Acceleration Test: Acceleration determines the time it takes for the Kart to accelerate along
100ft straight path. The Kart with minimum time will win.
a. Each team will be given two attempts to show case their best timing. The best
timing out of two attempts will be taken in consideration for final scoring.
Timing will be noted down using electronic system or stop watches.
b. Penalties1.
Cones Down or Out- A two (2) second penalty will be added for
each cone down or out (including entry and exit gate cones) that transpire
on that particular run to give the corrected elapsed time.
2.
DNF- Karts that have not run by the end of a particular round
(determined by the organizer) will receive a Did Not Finish (DNF)
c. Formula for best time calculation: Acceleration score= 40x [(TlongestTyours)/
(TlongestTshortest)]
Where: Tshortest is the fastest time by any team.
Tlongest is either (a) the slowest time by any team or
(b) 2x the fastest time whichever is the short interval.
T yours is your teams best time.
F. Skid Pad - The objective of the skid-pad event is to measure the vehicles cornering ability
on a flat surface while making a constant-radius turn. The skidpad layout may be a figure
of 8 or S depending on the track condition but minimum track width will be 3m and
shortest turning radius 2.5m.
NOTE: Each team may make two (2) attempts but with different rivers. Scoring will be based
on the better of the two attempts. Timing may be done using either electronic systems or
stop watches.

b. Penalties1. Cones Down or Out- A penalty of 1 second will be added to the time for
every cone that is knocked down or out (including gate cones).
2. DNF- Vehicles that spin-out can continue as long as they have not gone off
course will be classified as DNF.
3. Incorrect Laps- Vehicles that do not follow procedure, i.e. run an incorrect
number of laps or run the Laps in the wrong sequence will be classified as
DNF.
G. Autocross -The objective of the autocross event is to evaluate the vehicle's
maneuverability and handling qualities on a tight course without the hindrance of
competing vehicles. The autocross course will combine the performance features of
acceleration, braking, and cornering into one event.
a. Procedure- The vehicle will be staged such that the front wheels are 6 m (19.7
feet) behind the starting line. The timer starts only after the vehicle crosses the
start line. There will be no particular order of the vehicles to run each heat. The
organizer will determine the allowable windows for each heat and retains the right
to adjust for weather or technical delays. Vehicles that have not run by the end of
the heat will be disqualified for that heat.
NOTE: Each team may make two (2) attempts but with different drivers. Scoring will be based on
the better of the two attempts. Timing may be done using either electronic systems or stop
watches.
b. Autocross Course Specifications & Speeds
1. The following specifications will suggest the maximum speeds that will be
encountered on the course. Average speeds should be 40 km/hr (25 mph)
to 48 km/hr (30 mph).
2. Straights: No longer than 60m with hairpins at both ends (or) no longer
than 45m with wide turns on the ends.
3. Hairpin Turns: Minimum of 7m outside diameter (of the turn).
4. Slaloms: Cones in a straight line with 7.62 m to 12.19 m Spacing.
5. Miscellaneous: Chicanes, multiple turns, decreasing radius turns, etc. The
minimum track width will be 3.5 m (11.5 feet).
6. The length of each run will be approximately 0.805 km (1/2 mile) and the
driver will complete a specified number of runs.
Scoring Formulac. Autocross score = 80x [(TLongestTyours)/ (TlongestTshortest)]

1. Cones Down or Out- Two (2) seconds per cone, including any after the
finish line.
2. Driver must re-enter the track at or prior to the missed gate or a twenty
(20) second penalty will be assessed. Penalties will not be assessed for
accident avoidance or other reasons deemed sufficient by the track
officials.
3. Missed Slalom- Missing one or more gates of a given slalom will be counted
as one "off-course" per occurrence. Each occurrence will incur a twenty (20)
second penalty.
4. Note- The track layout is flexible
H. Endurance and Fuel Economy
a. The following are general guidelines for conducting the endurance and fuel
economy event. The organizers reserve the right to establish procedures specific
to the conduct of the event at the site. The endurance round will last for 3 hours.
b. Teams can change their drivers 4 times during endurance.
NOTE- Fuel economy marks will only be given to those teams who complete the overall
endurance.
Endurance Objective (150 points) - The Endurance Event is designed to evaluate the overall
performance of the Kart and to test the Karts reliability.
Fuel Economy test (50 points) - The fuel economy test is based on the average liters per kilometer
fuel economy obtained during the endurance heat.
NOTE- The Karts fuel economy will be measured in conjunction with the endurance event. The
fuel economy under racing conditions is important in most forms of racing and also shows how
well the Kart has been tuned for the competition. This is a compromising round because the fuel
economy score and endurance score will be calculated from the same heat. No refueling will be
allowed during an endurance heat.
Course speeds can be estimated by the following course specifications. Average speed should be
45 km/hr to 55 km/hr with top speeds of approximately 60 km/hr.
Procedure- The Karts will run continuously for 3 hours on the track. Maximum points will be
awarded to the Kart making maximum number of laps in the given time.
Endurance Fuel Fill- Before entering the event each Karts fuel tank must be filled to the fuel level
line at the fueling station. During fueling, once filled to the scribe line, no shaking or tilting of the
tank or fuel system (incl. entire Kart) is allowed.
Kart Starting/Restarting- The Kart must be capable of starting / restarting without external
assistance at all times once the Kart has begun the heat. If a Kart stalls out on the track, it will be

allowed approximately one (1) minute to restart. If a Kart has a restart problem at the end of
Driver Change, it will be allowed a further two (2) minutes to restart the engine. If restarts are
not accomplished within the above times, the Kart will be deemed disabled and scored DNF for
the heat.
Driver Changing Procedure- Elapsed time will begin when Driver A enters the course and crosses
the timing line. Driver A will drive for one (1) hour, and pull into driver change area where this
change will take place.
Kart Breakdown and Stalls- If a Kart breaks down it will be removed from the course and will not
be allowed to re-enter the course. If a Kart stalls, or ingests a cone, etc. it will be allowed to
restart and re-enter the course where it went off, but no work may be performed on the Kart. If
a Kart stalls and cannot be restarted without external assistance, the track workers will push the
Kart clear of the track. At the discretion of event officials, two (2) team members may retrieve
the Kart under direction of the track workers.
Endurance Minimum Speed Requirement- If a Kart is unable to maintain lap times within 133%
of the fastest lap time for the course, and then it must exit immediately. Disqualification for
failure to maintain the minimum speed will be made at the discretion of the Director of
Operations.
Endurance Lap Timing- Each lap of the endurance event will be individually timed either by
electronic means, or by hand. The time for an individual heat will be determined by subtracting
the extra-long lap for the driver change from the total time and adding any penalty points.

PenaltiesI. Off Course- for an OC, the driver must re-enter the track at or prior to the missed gate or
a twenty points penalty will be assessed.
J. Penalties for Moving Violations
K. Failure to obey a flag: 6 points
L. Over Driving (After a closed black flag): 6 points
M. Kart-to-Kart contact: DISQUALIFIED
N. Out of Order- Running out of order 12 points penalty
O. Mechanical Problem- No additional penalty other than the time lost to ensure that the
Kart is safe to continue
P. Reckless or Aggressive Driving- Any reckless or aggressive driving behavior (such as forcing
another Kart off the track, refusal to permit passing, or close driving that would cause the
likelihood of Kart contact) will result in a black flag for that driver. When a driver receives
a black flag signal, he must proceed to the penalty box to listen to a reprimand for his

Formula Kart Design Challenge

http://fmae.in/pages/about_fkdc.php

driving behavior. The amount of time spent in the penalty box will vary from 6 to 18 points
depending upon the severity of the offense.
Q. Inexperienced Driver- The Event in charge may disqualify a driver if the driver is too slow,
too aggressive, or driving in a manner that, in the sole opinion of the event, officials,
demonstrates an inability to properly control their Kart resulting in a DNF.
R. Poor Fuel Economy- Mileage exceeding 1 liters/25 km
a. NOTE- The score for the Endurance Event is the sum of the Endurance Time Score
and the Endurance Finish Score. The Endurance Time Score is based on the team's
time for event, including penalties, compared to the fastest team. A Kart will also
receive an Endurance Finish Score of twenty-five (25) points if the team's time for
the event, including penalties, is less than or equal to the maximum allotted time.

a. Flag signals are commands that must be obeyed immediately and without question.
2. Flag Types
a. There are two kinds of flags for the competition: Command flags and Informational flags.
3. Command flags are just that, flags that send a message to the competitor that the competitor must
obey without question.
4. Informational flags, on the other hand, require no action from the driver, but should be used as
added information to help him or her to maximize performance.
5. Command Flags
a. The following is a brief description of the flags used at the competitions in North America
and what each flag means.
NOTE: Not all of these flags are used at all competitions and some alternate designs are occasionally
displayed. Any variations from this list will be explained at the drivers meetings.
6. BLACK FLAG - Pull into the penalty box for discussion with the Chief Marshall/Director of
Operations or other official concerning an incident. A time penalty may be assessed for such
incident.
7. BLACK FLAG WITH ORANGE DOT - Pull into the penalty box for a mechanical inspection of your car,
something has been observed that needs closer inspection.
8. BLUE FLAG - Pull into the designated passing zone to be passed by a faster competitor. Obey the
corner workers hand signals at the end of the passing zone to merge into competition.
9. CHECKER FLAG - Your session has been completed. Exit the course at the first opportunity.
10. GREEN FLAG - Your session has started, enter the course under direction of the starter. (NOTE: If
you stall the Kart, please restart and await another green flag as the opening in traffic may have
closed.)
11. RED FLAG - Come to an immediate safe controlled stop on the course. Pull to the side of the course
as much as possible to keep the course open. Follow corner worker directions.
12. YELLOW FLAG (Stationary) - Danger, SLOW DOWN, be prepared to take evasive action, something
has happened beyond the flag station. NO PASSING unless directed by the corner workers.
13. YELLOW FLAG (Waved) - Great Danger, SLOW DOWN, evasive action is most likely required, BE
PREPARED TO STOP, something has happened beyond the flag station, NO PASSING unless directed
by the corner workers.
14. INFORMATION FLAGS
15. RED AND YELLOW STRIPED FLAG - Something is on the racing surface that should not be there. Be
prepared for evasive maneuvers to avoid the situation. (Corner workers may be able to point out
what and where it is located, but do not expect it.)
16. WHITE FLAG - There is a slow moving Kart on the course that is much slower than you are. Be
prepared to approach it at a cautious rate.
