Project basis

2) Kindly state your major contributions / accomplishments Geologist practitioner.

I am just an average practitioner, no exciting contribution in the field of geology, I will admit.
3) How much is you asking salary?
Normally I ask for the company standard rate because from my experience salary depends on
what commodity the company is engaged with. If I qualify for the position I hope I will be given the
opportunity to negotiate matters regarding salary and other benefits.
4) What do you do on an ongoing basis to keep your professional skills up to date?
I never stop on researching and keeping updated with technology, and the internet is the best
place to be. It is practically free and I can ask and get what I want real-time.
5) Indicate some of the significant development efforts you have undergone in the last few years.
You mean in the mining industry? I never get tired of mentoring my juniors on the importance of
continuing education regardless whether they are fruitfully employed or not. Remote sensing is
my favorite subject because with this technology even fresh graduates can have good advantage
if they know how to utilize this technology.
6) What do you see as the key competencies needed in your current assignment and how have you
gone about developing these?
My openness to learn and to share my knowledge are but a few virtues that I find most effective
in developing team spirit in a group. Spending time to listen to different ideas will lead to finetuning my own idea such that it will align with the others, and from there develops smooth
execution of any task or undertaking.
7) Tell us what you do to ensure that you meet the work commitments you make to others?
I always make it a point to understand, and to ask questions to clarify, every assignment that I
agree to undertake. I always make it a point to understand the cost (budget) and time constraint
so that I may be able strategize and innovate, if needed, to successfully implement and complete
the assignment given to me.
8) Give me an example of a time when you played a leadership role in an event, an activity, a
department or work unit, or a project. Describe how you led the efforts. Tell me how people
responded to your leadership.
In Semirara Mining and Power Corporation, I was given the opportunity to spearhead the forming
of a group of well monitoring group wherein the routine task is to ensure that all the dewatering
wells around the open pit are functioning such that the groundwater level around the open pit are
maintained as a function of slope stability.
This group was already a functioning group which I took over from geotechnical section of
geology department and their routine task is, for the well monitoring team - to measure the water
levels from the deep wells around the pit, and for the well maintenance team to do well and
pump maintenance and rehabilitation. This new section was called the hydrogeology and well
maintenance section.
The first thing I did was to review all the job qualification and skills of the crew assigned to me.
After taking note of their skills and educational background I talked to the training department and
on staggered basis I sent them to training department for skills enhancement. Some underwent
practical electricity, electronics, mechanics training, etc. Because when the personnel were

turned over to me, the machines, tools and instruments they used to perform their routine were
likewise turned over to my care. So in the event of equipment, machine, instrument or tools
breakdown or maintenance, instead of going to mechanical and electrical workshop, my own
crew which were trained and subsequently passed the evaluation from training department before
endorsement to their new expert skills, were now the ones doing the repair and maintenance.
This prevented lengthy downtime if we had to wait for the mechanical and electrical group to
accommodate us, which usually took too long to respond to us because of too many job orders
they need to serve in the other departments.
My team was happy because of the new empowerment and sense of pride they had as a result of
cross-training and skills enhancement. My section did become a stand-alone team not needing
outside help for technical problems that we can troubleshoot ourselves. My approach proved very
effective.
9) Have you been on a dysfunctional team? What did you do as a team member or team leader to
address the problems?
Not really, but Ive seen some of these in other groups. I thought to myself, this dysfunctional
team may be fixed by defining each members duties and responsibilities. Perhaps there is
overlapping duties and responsibilities which causes confusion. Each member of the team should
be made aware of his role, to whom he reports to and who reports to him.
10) Did you ever give a presentation to a challenging audience? How did you cope with that
audience? What was the result?
I made a few presentations to the president of the company and some key people in the
organization. The key here is to come prepared with the subject matter. Visual presentation
comes standard but the most important of all is to be prepared with the question of all sorts from
the participants. Coming to a presentation unprepared is quite embarrassing.
11) Constant pressure gets to all of us after a long period of time. Describe an incident where you did
not handle pressure well. How do you keep track of duties that must get done concurrently?
I understand when working in the mining environment pressure is a constant companion, we just
have to learn to deal with it. The thing is, I always make it a point that I understand the tasks and
duties given to me before I set out and perform. But when things seem to go wrong, which is what
I am always on the look-out, I make it a point to stay alert and discuss the impending problem to
whoever I should discuss it with to avoid a much bigger problem.
Thanks nothing of this sort of pressure so far happens.
12) Can you share an experience of how you have maximized the benefit produced from limited
resources you were given to work with?
This was a tangible experience but nevertheless Id like to share it. We were supposed to make a
reconnaissance geologic mapping (for copper-gold) in Dinapigue, Isabela. We prepared a budget
for one week manpower, food, and temporary shelter. Since the area was not previously
explored and there was the problem of security, the LGU assigned 3 armed IPs to accompany us
to serve as security. So we had three guides and a cook plus myself and the 3 IPs. We prepared
the food and the temporary shelter (trapal) and so we went. But to my surprise the 3 IPs brought
along with them their respective families reasoning that they will not interfere with our activity
because the other members of their families will go hunting.
On the understanding that the other members of the 3 IPs brought with them their own food and
temporary shelter, we proceeded to the area.

It was an 8 hour trek from the barangay proper to the area. When we got to the area only then we
realized that the members (total of 6) of the IPs families brought no temporary shelter and very
little amount of rice with them. So when night falls we had to share the tarpaulin we brought with
everybody. And the food we had good for one week was depleted on the third day. The geologic
aides and cook advised me to return to our basecamp on the fourth day because food is difficult
in the hinterland. That was outrageous, and of course I disagreed. Good thing I brought a small
amount of money and I had to ask two teenaged male members of our IP team to go down to the
market to buy some provisions. I had to pay them separately to do the errands. It was really
difficult to feed several mouths who were not part of the plan; with a limited additional amount of
food bought (the two teenagers can only carry so much) we only managed an additional two days
of mapping and rock sampling and we had to stop the activity and return to basecamp, or else we
could have starved.
But we managed to collect a substantial stream samples (for geochemical analyses) and some
rock samples during the shortened schedule, enough to initially confirm positive presence of
copper (and probably gold) in the area.
On the subsequent mapping campaigns we made it a point to bring more provisions, but that
meant adding manpower to carry those provisions.
13) What kind of professional development and training would make you a more effective employee?
I think continuing personal development seminars will be enough.
14) Are you willing to be assigned in Dinapigue Isabela? You are required to stay at the minesite for 4
weeks at the minesite; 1 week vacation (additional 2days for the travel time) - including free
meals and accommodation
Yes, with my previous experience in Dinapigue, Isabela, Id be delighted to return to that place. I
came to know the people there the locals, the IPs,the LGU officials and the MGB personnel
who monitor the area. The roster is acceptable to me.
15) What kind of management style do you take with your employees? How do you treat your
employees? How do you resolve discipline problems?
I adhere to the style of management by objective. I always emphasize what needs to be done,
how to do it, and my staff / team members have the liberty to suggest and recommend.
Everybody has the chance of getting heard. Problematic employee gets reprimanded, given the
chance to change, and if not, disciplined or terminated, if not advised to resign. Yes, I do that.
16) Did you ever give a presentation to a challenging audience? How did you cope with that
audience? What was the result?
same as item 10.
17) In what ways could you contribute to his job?
Im sorry, but whose job?
18) Tell us your experience in working with others of diverse background from yours. How you handle
differences that come from different backgrounds?
The most important thing here is that you have to be a good listener first and not be very
assertive about yourself. Thats what I am.

19) Could you give me an example of the type of work you did on a day-to-day basis that required
accuracy?
The product or output I need from my team are data. I teach them how to collect accurate data on
a timely basis. With good data I can make good and accurate decisions and recommendations to
give to my boss.
20) Which of your personality traits do you feel will be most effectively utilized in this position?
I am a good listener. I am not biased with my decisions (no favoritism). And I always follow the
golden rule do good deeds to others and they will reciprocate the same.
21)Tell me a suggestion you have made that was implemented in the geological field?
I can give an example in the field of hydrogeology particularly deepwell maintenance
and rehabilitation. I was successful in demonstrating to top level management in
Semirara that the use of compressed air can be used successfully in rehabilitating an
otherwise aging and unproductive deep water well. Compressed air is now being
used routinely in that mine to develop, clean and rehabilitate deep water wells.
