Prelude
During the early 1900s, Europe is spilt in to 2 forms of alliance, the Central powers
and Allied powers.
This form of alliance is proven to be a very devastating as it caused the Great War.
The war is the first war in modern history that caused a change in global diplomacy.
First, Russia became a Communist state and Germany lost its Kaiser or its king and
became a repulbic. Secondly, America started to be more open toward the world as
the Americans before this war practices isolationism but it did not join the League of
Nations.
Although The First World War is called the War to end all Wars, however that war is
the war that acted as the script of modern diplomacy and the Second World War.
2. Due to the fact that the UN mission in Korea achieved its target, America is
more willing to help countries under communist insurgency under the Truman
Doctrine.
3. After Stalins aggressive attempt to block Berlin, NATO is formed.
4. The communist insurgency in SEA made it clear that the SEA region is against
communism with Vietnam as an exception.
5. Israels formation causes the biggest humanitarian problems till today and
tension between Jewish and Muslims are still high.
The 60s and 70s, birth of wars and new nations.
History saw many wars fought over the 60s and 70s like the Vietnam War,
Invasion of Bay of Pigs, and Yom Kippur War. History also sees birth of new
nations in this period of time.
To start with, The Soviet supported East Germany stared erecting the Berlin
Wall, separating friends and families throughout Berlin.
The Communist Party of South Vietnam started armed conflict with the South
Vietnamese government, later with the involvement of Communist North
Vietnam. In 1961, the first American troops arrived at Vietnam and the war
ended with a communist victory, uniting the nation in to the Vietnam we see
today.
An ill-fated attempt to invade Cuba in the Bay of Pigs, staged by the US,
caused the communist Cuban government to become an ally of the USSR and
later the USSR used Cuba to place its rockets carrying nuclear warhead to
threaten the US in the Cuban Missile Crisis.
In the 70s, after the humiliating loss of huge territory to the Israelis in the SixDay War, Syria and Egypt with arms supplied by the USSR waged a war to
reclaim land, the Yom Kippur War. The war ended with the Egyptians being
the first Arabic nation to recognize Israel.
Iran changed from a pro-Western country in to an Islamic State after the
Iranian Revolution. Thats not all, Cambodia is taken over by the Khmer
Regime and the regime committed massive genocide to form a Marxist
agrarian society which is a society that practices a radical form of
communism.
Finally, states in the USSR begins massive riots and strikes for more freedom.
All of the riots are quashed by the invasion of the Red Army.
To aid in installing a communist government in Afghanistan, the Red Army is
given orders to invade Afghanistan. A proxy war started between the
Western world and the USSR as the Western world align with the Mujahedin
by providing arms to it to combat the Red Army.
Hostile relationship between USSRs eastern ally, China and USSR gave
America a chance to defrost diplomatic relations with China.
Again, what significance does it pose to the ever changing world of
diplomacy?
1. The defeat in Vietnam made the American public and government think
twice before plunging itself into war.
2. The riots and strikes in the USSR made it clear that the people in the USSR
are no longer willing to life and work under a totalitarian government.
Setting a stage for later years to come.
3. The Iranian Revolution made anti-Americanism spirit clear in Iran.
4. With a hostile relationship with the USSR, China decided to open its
market and improve economy, making China a new force to reckon with in
the future.
The 80s till the present
The Afghanistan War continued into the 1980s and in 1985 the Red Army
decided that the war is too costly and pulled its troops out of Afghanistan.
As America is defeated in Vietnam, America has been very cautious with
foreign politics, it is commonly known as the Vietnam Syndrome and this
gave the USSR a chance to dominate world politics. However, in the 1980s
Americas president, Ronald Reagan decided that this syndrome has to end so
he made American foreign policies aggressive and invaded Grenada to oust a
revolutionary government.
At the same time, the Iron Lady or Margret Thatcher responded aggressively
toward the invasion of the Falkland Island by the Argentinians by sending a
task force to reclaim that island.
In year 1987, President Ronald Reagan gave a speech that quotes Mr.
Gorbachev, tear down this wall! and 2 years later, the USSR finally tear down
the wall and Germany is finally united.
In the early 90s, after being in large debt over the Iran-Iraq war, Iraq invaded
Kuwait and in response of the invasion, a US-led coalition force engaged in
what is known as the 1st Gulf War and successfully pushed the Iranians out of
Kuwait.
At the same time, the Evil Empire quoted by President Ronald Reagans
speech as the USSR has dissolved. The direct result is the breakup of former
Yugoslavia and a UN peace keeping mission at Bosnia.
Entering the 21st century, the 2nd Gulf War started, ousted Saddam Hussain
and installed a new government in to Iraq.
As Israel still claims land over what was once the State of Palestine,
Palestinians stared riots
over area like the Gaza Strip but to be retailed
with rocket barrages from Israel.
With the opening of Chinas market in the 70s, China is now a global giant
and recently seeks to claim territory over the South China Sea, causing
tension to rise with counties like the Philippines, Japan and Vietnam.
In Europe, an inter-continental body the European Union is formed. Its
member states uses the same currency and its people dont need passport to
travel around different member states.
Entering the first decade of the 21st century, the Arabic world underwent a
political uprising by the people to oust their government, known as the Arab
Springs.
CONCLUSION
So, now it quite obvious that before the USSR dissolved, its easy to
differentiate who is friend or foe. But with the USSR replaced by the Russian
Federation, the lines between who is an ally and who is the enemy now
blurred.
Basically, nations in Europe and Canada are mostly align with the US. Russia
is basically against a too liberal society and has a love-hate relationship with
its former states like Ukraine and others.
South East Asia and the Pacific region are mostly align to the west, however
Malaysia is against the US when it comes to the problem of Israel and
Palestine. The ROK, Japan, Singapore and the Philippines are firm allies with
the US.
China is basically trying to dominate the world politics, so China mostly goes
with its policy. China is also known to be in a tense relationship with the US
and Japan, as the US provide protection to Taiwan and Japan refuse to
apologize officially towards China over the things Japan has done during
WW2.
Last but not lease, after the breakup the USSR, a new breed of terror is born. I
think some of you guys already know what I mean, Terrorism. After the
Afghanistan War, weapons and skills of the Mujahidin, supplied and taught by
the US is use to take over Afghanistan. We are all familiar with the Al-Qaeda
over the 911 attack and after the death of Osama bin Laden, we now face
ISIS, a very successful terrorist organization compared to organization of its
kind. Its safe to say that every country is against terrorism and will stop for
nothing to stop it.
So, guys thats basically it. We have covered over a hundred years of history
and the changes it had brought to the world we see today.
