The CVP A will be delivered to Nakambala Sugar Factory in 5 separate
sections. The different sections are explained in this manual. The calandria
will be stitch welded in place to the bottom section to reduce the amount of
distortion during transportation. The walkways, stairs and access platforms
will be transported in broken down form and will need to be assembled and
installed on site. Piping and valves will also be transported in broken down
form to be assembled on site using the issued isometric drawings.

The mass of each component is stated in Figure 2 to 6.

Top Section
The top half of the CVP shell will arrive as illustrated in Figure 2. The save
all will be fully welded in position. All baffle plates (horizontal and
longtudinal) will be transported loose and are to be installed on site. The
outside stiffening rings will be stitch welded to the shell and are to be fully
welded during installation.

Bottom Section
All baffle/division plates, condensate chamber plates, saddles and stiffening
rings will be stitch welded in place for transportation, as illustrated below,
they will require full welds during installation.

Calandria
The calandria will arrive fully welded as illustrated below, with the exception
of the vapour inlet nozzle which will be installed once the shell is fully welded.
The calandria will be stitch welded in place, on the bottom section, for ease
of transportation and to act as a stiffener to reduce deformation in both the
calandria and bottom section of the shell during transportation.

Vapor Dome
This section will be transported as illustrated below. The entrainment
separator will be fitted before transportation. The dome will be fully welded to
the top half of the shell during assembly.

Outlet Weir
The outlet weir will be transported as illustrated below. Once the shell has
been completely assembled the weir must be fully welded into position.

Holding Down Bolt Arrangement


Refer to Drawing 185-171-5-100-ME-304 for holding down bolt arrangement.
Bolts are to be adequately tightened to prevent loosening during operation of
the CVP.

Important guidelines to be followed:

Tubesheet parallelism: Drop a tap through adjacent holes and take


a reading of the distance across the tubesheets. Repeat at
various positions and check for discrepancies.
Tubesheet flatness/distortion.
Damage or defects in any of the holes.
Damage to tubes.

Tubesheet surfaces to be walked on must be covered by cardboard,


matting or similar material for protection.

Tubesheet holes to be cleaned to be free of all rust, oil, grit, etc. without
polishing the surface of the hole. No other work shall be permitted
above the tube sheet so as to prevent damage or contamination from
grinding or welding activities in the vicinity. Do not clean more holes
than can tubed during a half shift otherwise corrosion will form.

Dimple each tube in its upper end to prevent it falling through the upper
tubesheet.

Clean tube ends of burrs using emery paper ensuring no excessive


scoring occurs.

Load the tubes around the stay-bars first to form a nest say 3 deep
around the stay-bar.
Expand the tubes tops and bottoms checking projections are as stated
on the assembly drawings. Top projection usually 6mm, trim tubes
bottom projection, if necessary to achieve 6mm projection on the
bottom as well.

Continue to load and expand the nest of tubes around the stay-bars in
increasing circles until the complete tubesheet is filled. As progress is
made, protect the completed tubes end with boards to prevent damage.

Carry out Third party Inspection of expansions. This includes 2%


random tube ID measurement. If any tubes are found to be out of
tolerance, a further 2% shall be measured. Any further deficiencies will
be followed by an increasing inspection rate of 4%, 8%, 16%, 32%, etc.

On completion of the tubing and TPI clearance, the calandria shall be


subjected to a hydraulic test. Holding the pressure for 40 minutes, the
tubesheet expansions are to be drop-tight for the complete test
duration. Leaks can be rectified by further expansion of the tube up to
11% wall thinning; thereafter the tube must be replaced.

The TPI will issue a certificate of compliance for the vessel after
successful hydraulic testing.

SAFETY
Over and above adhering to the local legal and safety legislation of the
country in which the installation is taking place, the following minimum
measures should be put into place:

All personnel involved in the installation must be suitably inducted for


the site they are working on;

The correct personnel protective equipment and clothing must be worn


for the tasks being performed;

Correct clearance/work permits must be obtained by personnel carrying


out the installation;

A suitably sized area must be cleared and barricaded while lifting of


equipment is taking place;

Potential risks during the lift are to be reviewed and mitigated, prior to
the commencement of the lift, by means of a detailed documented
rigging study and risk evaluation by assigned suitably skilled and
experienced personnel.

CVP A PIPING AND VALVE INSTALLATION


For piping and valve installation, refer to issued piping General Arrangement
drawings 185-171-5-100-PI-0001 and 185-171-5-100-PI-0002. All valves are
tagged and all tag numbers are referenced on the GA drawings and P&ID.

4.

ELECTRICAL AND INSTRUMENTATION INSTALLATION


Check the lights to ensure that they conform to the factory power supply.
The supplied spotlight must be installed in each light glass (LG) position
shown on the GA drawing.
The spotlight will be bolted to the provided bracket and orientated with the
beam directed towards the light glass.
Electrical connection to lights is to be completed by others.

The mounting brackets for the brix probes have been fabricated to accept
microwave brix probes. Should there be a preference to install RF probes in
alternate bays, the client as agreed to supply adaptor plates to accept the RF
probes.
5.

CVP A WALKWAY INSTALLATION


For information on CVP walkway and access platform assembly refer to
latest revision of drawing 185-171-5-100-ME-0307 and Drawing No. 185-1715-100-ME-0313. All walkway components are marked and should be
assembled as per Drawing No. 185-171-5-100-ME-0313.

6.

CVP A ASSEMBLY SEQUENCE


1)

Lift bottom section of shell with calandria stitch welded (as transported)
in place, onto the steel work. Should the lift be above allowable
capacity, the calandria must be removed from the shell bottom section.
Should this be the case, the bottom section should be lifted onto the
steelwork first;

2)

Level and bolt down the bottom section onto steelwork; for bolting
arrangement refer to Section 1.6 in this document;

3)

Calandria seat levels (top of bottom baffle plates) must be adjusted,


checked and signed off;

4)

Check shell dimensions and adjust if necessary ensuring not to disturb


calandria seat level;

5)

Lift the calandria into position and level completely;

6)

Lift top of shell into position and adjust to ensure correct alignment;

7)

Install Vapour Dome;

8)

Install top internal baffle plates;

9)

Check calandria for level/twist, adjust if necessary;

10) Install calandria/shell end plates. Cut to size before installation;

11) Complete all stitch welds on the baffle plates to calandria, shell to shell,
condensate chamber plate to shell and stiffener rings to shell;
12) It is absolutely crucial that during welding of all baffle and end plates, to
the calandria, it is ensured that all tube plate holes remain within
dimensional tolerance. Additionally, ensure all levels remain correct and
there is no warping or twisting of plates;
13) After securely stitch welding all components check all dimensions and
levels;
14) Fully weld all stitch welded areas and any additional areas which call for
full welds.
NB. All dimensions and levels must be checked and signed off by all relevant
parties before commencing each step.
