Dear Uncle Skippity-Bebop,

You want me to take Zippity Doo Dah on a little road trip, huh? You have an obnoxious
amount of money so you can afford a few plane tickets for us here and there. Im going to take
him to some sweet spots to teach him about US History I!
The first place were going to go to is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington
D.C. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a national memorial that is two acres and honors the
U.S. soldiers who served in the Vietnam War, soldiers who died in Vietnam and soldiers who
were never found. The memorial has three parts. The best-known part of the memorial is the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. It truly is a staggering sight as every servicemans name is
etched onto the surface of a 250-foot wall. There is a total of 58,307 names on the wall. It is an
excellent visual to teach your kid about the horrendous destruction of war without being graphic.
The next place I want to take Zippity is to the United States Capitol in Washington D.C.
The U.S. Capitol (A.K.A. Capitol Building or Capitol Hill), is where the United States Congress
is located! The United States Congress is the legislative branch of the U.S. government. The
building was completed in 1800 and was expanded. The building today has a dome that you
certainly cant miss. Inside the Visitors Center, we will learn all about the characteristics that
make the House unique, we will learn about the Senate and the legislative process. In addition to
that, we will discuss the process and history of the construction of the building and the beautiful
art contained in its doors. Learning all about the U.S. Capitol and what goes on inside it is going
to prove very beneficial to Zippy Doo because it is where laws are written, discussed and voted
on! Laws play an extremely pivotal role in society and having knowledge about where and how
they originate is very important.

For the third historical landmark, wed go to the National Firearms Museum in Fairfax,
Virginia. This museum has three thousand guns from the past six hundred years, presenting
Americas most significant firearms ranging from the oldest gun on display in America to a
NYPD Officers revolver recovered from the ashes of the World Trade Center. The guns each
have their own individual story but as a whole, the museum tells a much bigger one. It
showcases the change in our technology over time. Starting with old, basic weapons and ending
with the advanced, modern weapons we have today. Throughout U.S. History, there have been
many technological advancements but this one is one of the most important ones. Had the gun
never been invented, a lot of societys problems wouldnt exist. Had the gun never been
improved upon throughout the course of history, a lot less people would have died in war.
Having the opportunity to see the change in the technology of the most fundamental weapon will
be an excellent learning opportunity for Doo Dah.
Next up is New Orleans. Have you ever heard jazz? Thank slavery. In the late 19th
century, New Orleans was the only place that allowed their slaves to have drums. The slaves
frequently organized rituals called VooDoo rituals. It wasnt just for the slaves to see. In fact,
all different types of people, white or black watched these rituals. Soon, the European music
which consisted heavily of horns, met the drums of Africans. The two types of music got along
well. They got together frequently and eventually a new style of music was born: jazz. New
Orleans was the birthplace of jazz and it is quite an experience. Jazz is considered American
music. Its important to understand that it was because of the slaves that we have it today or that
it ever came about in the first place. Jazz makes people happy and it makes people dance. It
makes people feel good. That kind of stuff came from people who were looked down upon and

discriminated against. Doesnt that teach something about humanity? Its an important fact of
history that is often overlooked. It shows that we truly are all human and are connected in ways
we cant understand. Going to New Orleans would teach Zippity from an experience he cant get
anywhere else. Of course, Id supply all of the information!

The final place Id take Zippity Doo Dah is in front of the Old State House in Boston,
Massachusetts. Many historians believe that the Boston Massacre was the first battle of the
American Revolution. Where would we be today if the American Revolution never took place?
We would probably be under Parliament still, being bossed around by a King. But the American
Revolution happened, and now here we are. This is America. What may have been the first battle
of that revolution? The Boston Massacre! And you can stand right where it took place. You can
look in the history books and see the similarity between the scenes but you can also look around
and see how much weve changed as a society since then. It is truly an amazing experience, just
being there. There is so much to learn about this event in history and it can be done completely
free!

I hope this trip is going to meet your standards, Uncle Skippity-Bebop. Its going to be a lot of
fun blowing your money around America. I plan on taking Zippity Doo Dah to every one of my
favorite restaurants along the way! With your money. Thats what makes it great.
Love,
Ryan Shaw
