Mari Kondo
Program Director

Welcome to the Doshisha Global MBA

At Doshisha we apply our universitys traditional emphasis
on education guided by conscience to the challenges
and opportunities of todays world to provide a business
education that will prepare you to manage successfullyand
make a differencein the business environment of the 21st
century.
Joseph Hardy Neesima, the founder of Doshisha University,
believed that both intellectual education and education
of the soul are needed to make a person a true man. In
business education this means not just teaching business
knowledge, but also helping students develop skills and
competencies that will help them apply business knowledge
in ways that have a positive impact on society, safeguarding
the ability for future generations to develop their lives and
careers.
Our location of Kyoto is home to some of the worlds oldest
companies and is an ancient center for schools of religious
thought and practice that, through processes of international
trade and education, continue to influence Western
conceptualizations of sustainability and mindfulness in
global management practice. Our Global MBA program is
designed to build on these traditions and re-invigorate their
relevance to the study of global business and management.
On top of a solid foundation in the core business subjects,
you can design a program to match your interests by
choosing from a full menu of courses and program options,
including our three special focus areas of Sustainability
and Green Business, Culture and Creativity, and Business
in Asia. You will also build strong leadership and
communication skills, and sharpen your ability to think,
research, and write analytically and strategicallyqualities
that employers look for in an MBA. Another unique program
feature is the chance to study Japanese, take some classes
in our Japanese MBA program, and interact with a range of
businesses based in Kyoto and the Kansai region.
If you are looking to advance your career, and to help make
the world a better place, then we are looking for you. Come
and join us at Doshisha Business School. I look forward to
meeting you!

Program Highlights
Global MBA Focus Areas
The Global MBA offers three innovative focus areas designed to match the demands of 21st century business.

Sustainability and Green Business

There is no question that the number one challenge facing humanity today is preserving the
health of our planet, and that business has a huge role to play in doing that. MBA programs
the world over are making green business a central pillar of their curricula, and Doshisha is
no exception.
Drawing on Kyotos legacy as birthplace of the Kyoto Protocol, and on the advances of
Japanese companies in developing green technologies and adopting sustainable business
practices, our Green Business courses and projects provide students with a solid foundation
in the theory and practice of managing firms in a sustainable way, including increasing
energy efficiency, reducing waste, managing the environmental impact of business, and
finding ways to promote sustainability in all aspects of a companys operations.

Culture and Creativity

Cultural and creative industriesranging from anime, music, video games and film to
fashion, design, traditional crafts, and cultural tourismare dynamic sectors in todays
knowledge economy with far reaching economic, social, and political implications. Japanese
pop culture, for example, is not just big business; popular among young people the world
over, it is considered a form of soft power that brings the world closer together.
More broadly, creativity and innovation considered key drivers of economic growth
are increasingly demanded of individuals, companies, and societies in today's competitive
business environment. Global MBA Culture and Creativity courses prepare you to manage
successfully in the cultural sector and give you a creative edge that can be applied in any
company or industry.

Business in Asia
Accounting for more than one quarter of world GDPgreater than that of the United States
or the EU-15Asia is the most dynamic region of the world economy. And not just as a
cheap-labor based producer of manufactured goods; Asian companies are leading innovators
and Asian markets for other countries products and services are the fastest growing in the
world.

International Atmosphere and Overseas Exchange

With students from around the globe and visiting professors from top international business schools, our Global MBA provides the perfect
environment for developing a global mindset: an appreciation of cultural differences and the complexities of the world we live in, and the
knowledge, understanding, and communication skills needed to thrive in an international business environment.
Adding another dimension to thier experience, students have the opportunity to spend a term at one of our overseas partner universities. We also
welcome exchange students from these institutions, adding to the cosmopolitan nature of our program.
Currently our overseas exchange partners include University of Gothenburg School of Business, Economics and Law (Sweden), University of
Tubingen School of Business and Economics (Germany), Aalto University School of Business (Finland), and University of Denver Daniels College
of Business (USA).

That is not to say that doing business in Asia is simple. Asia is a mosaicof traditional and
modern, of diverse histories, geography, cultures, political systems, and business practices.
To succeed in Asiaas a company, an NGO, or a businesspersonyou must understand
these various differences and dynamics and know how to navigate them. Our Business in
Asia courses teach you to do this.

Hear from our Alumni

Business without connections is like business without money. At Doshisha studying with a group of highly talented students
from as many as 27 countries gave me extraordinary connections around the world and makes this MBA program like no
other. Sustainability, social responsibility, and ethical concerns are embedded into the vision of DBS, making the Global MBA
education not solely about business, but about morals, values, and friendship as well. All of these elements combine to make
DBS the best educational and professional experience I have ever had. I truly believe that our graduates will enjoy success and
fulfillment in their careers.

Preparation for Japan-related Job Opportunities

For those interested in working in Japan or for a Japanese company overseas, the Global MBA provides practical training and advice on job hunting
in Japan, and access to Japanese language courses (matched to each students Japanese level) offered by the universitys Center for Japanese
Language and Culture free of charge.
As Doshisha Business School is home to both Global and Japanese MBA programs, Global MBA students with a suitable level of Japanese are able
to take a number of Japanese MBA classes. Japanese students are also encouraged to take some Global MBA courses in English. This provides a
great opportunity to interact with Japanese MBA students, most of whom are full-time managers in Kansai companies.

Career Advancement

Student Voice

An MBA is an investment in your future, whether you are looking

to change careers or to move into a managerial position in your
present field. Todays job market for MBAs is strong. According to a
corporate recruiters survey conducted by the Graduate Management
Admissions Council (GMAC), 80% of companies were planning to
hire an MBA graduate in 2014, up from 50% in 2009 and 73% in
2013.

Lauren Jubelt
(USA)

Japanese Firms Recruiting International Students

With a shrinking domestic market and a generation of young Japanese that tends to look more inward than abroad, Japanese companies are sharply
increasing their recruitment of non-Japanese as they expand their global operations. What these companies seek in their non-Japanese recruits
are language ability, an understanding of Japanese business practices, strong drive, and the communication skills and perspective that come from
experience in a multicultural environment. Many are also making efforts to shift their corporate culture from the closed style of the pastwith
rigid labor practices and reliance on Japanese-speaking staffto a more open, international style that welcomes diversity, new ideas, and fresh
perspectives on how to do business.

Corporate Internships
Corporate internships offer students a chance to apply what theyve learned in the classroom to the real
world, to experience business practices first-hand, and to expand their network of business connections.
They also give students and companies a chance to get to know each other, and can lead to employment
opportunities after graduation.
Many Global MBA students do internships during their time in our program, either in Japan or
overseas. Among the business areas they have worked in are market entry research, business
development, data analysis, diversity management, and corporate communications. Students may also
use an internship as part of the research for their Project Research Report or Masters Thesis.

Career Resources
Our career center provides resources, information,
and advice on employment opportunities, job fairs,
and the job-hunting process to help you explore
and realize your career goals. We regularly invite
external speakers to provide seminars for MBA
students and coordinate with the university for
on-site recruitment events.
Our career services include:
Career assessment and planning
Resume and cover letter writing assistance
Job interview coaching
One-on-one career consultation
Up-to-date job listings
E-Career web portal
Career fairs, recruiting events, and workshops

Hear from Our Career Advisor

Joe Aoki
Career Advisor

Before joining Doshisha Business School in April 2013, I worked for

Panasonic for many years. At Panasonic, I worked in the Overseas
Marketing, Corporate Planning, and Intellectual Property Rights
Departments. When I retired from my job in 2011, I thought it was
about time I went into hibernation, but I decided to do something that
could help others in the world instead.
My job is very simple: to find a job in Japan on your behalf. In order
to complete this mission, I teach you basic job hunting skills such as
how to write a curriculum vitae and an application, and how to attend
an interview. Beyond these basic things, I provide you with many
pieces of valuable information about real Japanese business,
economy, management, culture, language, and more to help make you
a knowledgeable business person with human skill.
Any type of person is always welcome in my office. Oftentimes an
aggressive person is not accepted by society with open arms, but I
believe that society and corporations need aggressive persons
sometimes.

Student Voice
Job hunting in Japan is all about the network
that you make while you are studying here as
a foreigner. Anyone can be an asset to you.
Your professors are a key asset you should
utilize as well. The career center is also there
to help you with information about job
hunting and even help you with a Japanese
resume and advice. I was personally taken
directly to an interview by Mr. Aoki in the
career center! Job hunting in Japan isn't easy,
but it's becoming a global world and Japanese
companies want to hire multilingual employees,
so now is a great time to get an MBA and be
global. Good luck!

I had a wonderful opportunity to be able to

work as an intern for Business Development
for The Economist Group in Tokyo during
the course of my study. I got word of the
vacancy through a former DBS professor.
The internship gave me the chance to work
with a uniquely erudite and eclectic group
of C-suite individuals who head various
MNCs in Tokyo. Additionally, it helped me
realize the importance of professionalism,
career management, and most importantly
networking, especially if one wants to leave
a footprint in Japan. It was rewarding as
much as it was challenging.

Doshisha Business School Network

The Doshisha Business School Network was organized in 2006,
connecting students, professors, alumni, and members of the Kansai
business community. Tomohiro Inamoto, president, describes the
Network's activities:

Doshisha Business School brings together people from a broad range

of backgrounds, industries, businesses, and enterprises. The DBS
Network helps keep us connected and provides a means to expand
our personal networks. The Network maintains its own website,
holds study group research seminars, and sponsors talks by business
leaders from Kansai area corporations such as Omron, Kyocera, and
Panasonic.
Access to the DBS Network is an important benefit of studying in
our Global MBA, and can open doors to support you in your business
career.

Doshisha Alumni Association (Doshisha Koyu-kai)

The emblem of the Doshisha Alumni Association is patterned after the Wild
Rover, the ship that Joseph Hardy Neesima boarded for America, violating
the national prohibition against overseas travel, to experience the culture and
civilization of the West. Conquering all difficulties, he founded Doshisha in
1875. Doshisha Koyu-kai originates from the Alumni-kai that was organized
in 1885, ten years after Doshisha was founded. Doshisha graduates actively
working around the world now total more than 320,000 people. In addition to
the 48 chapters and over 40 clubs throughout Japan, there are overseas chapters
and clubs located in over 21 cities of 14 countries around the world. With an
increasingly international student body at the university, the DAA network is
sure to spread far and wide as branches of the vine in the spirit of Doshisha.

facilities include classrooms, project rooms, lounges, and the business school library. The
lounges, project rooms, and library are open to MBA students 24/7, 365 days a year. The school
has Wi-Fi internet access, and full security is ensured for students studying late at night.
Student support services include career counseling, advice for living in Kyoto, and access to the
universitys excellent program of Japanese language study.

The Lounge
The lounge is a comfortable and relaxing
space equipped with kitchen facilities and
lockers for personal use. Students can keep
up to date via BBC and CNN available on
the large screen TV, meet with friends and
colleagues, or simply take a break from
their studies.

Living and Studying in Kyoto

A safe, exciting, and fascinating countryand one fully integrated into the dynamic Asian economy
Japan is an excellent place to study for your MBA. Doshisha Business School is located in the ancient
capital of Kyoto, which lies at the heart of the broader Kansai economy.

Tokyo

Kyoto ancient capital and modern city

Home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, Kyoto is
the location of choice for innovators, academics, and all
those wishing to surround themselves with a fascinating
balance of the past, present, and future. While traditional
Kyoto draws tourists from all over the globe to its
temples and gardens, modern Kyoto offers everything
that the resident or visitor could desire: exciting shopping
districts, a safe and fun night life, a variety of natural and
spiritual pursuits and institutions, and access to Japan's
international hub cities of Osaka and Kobe. The Kansai
region of Japan (centered around Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe)
offers a multicultural environment with China-towns,
Korea-towns, and a huge range of cultural and
entertainment events.

Kansai a global business hub

The Doshisha Business School Library

Our collection of books, magazines, and AV
data covers various business-related fields
such as business strategy, management,
marketing, accounting, financial affairs,
and information science. A document
retrieval system and a variety of online
databases are also available.

Other University Facilities Learning Commons

In addition to facilities located within DBS, students are
free to use university facilities such as the main library and
the Learning Commons, a 2,550m study space equipped
with open, flexible spaces and a wide variety of the latest
information technology. Divided into Creative Commons
and Research Commons, there are informal spaces where
you can interact with students from all over the university
and as well as specialized staff available to help hone your
academic skills.

With the largest number of manufacturers in the country,

Kansai is regarded as the industrial heart of Japan and
is deeply connected with the broader Asian economy.
Many leading Japanese companies, including Nintendo,
Panasonic, Kawasaki, Itochu, Sharp, Daihatsu, Daikin,
Kyocera and Omron, were established or are headquartered
in the region, and Doshisha Business School maintains
strong relationships with local industry. With cutting-edge
research institutes and dozens of universities, Kansai is a
major R&D center, boasting a large number of high-tech
science parks and next-generation industrial clusters. One
third of global lithium-ion battery production, for instance,
is based in Kansai, and the regions firms hold a 70%
share of the domestic market for solar cells. Many leading
multinationals, including AstraZeneca, Bayer Healthcare,
P&G, Haier, Recaro and Nestle, have also chosen Kansai as
their Japanese base.

Student Voice
Building on my prior experience studying in Asia, pursing my MBA in Japan was a natural choice. Doshisha Business
School offers a unique multicultural and multinational environment and a focus and awareness with which few other
business schools can compete. With its relatively small size you will quickly find yourself at home here, with professors
stepping out of their way to provide the best classes possible. Kyoto is a city echoing back thousands of years, yet with a
fresh young big-city vibe. Living and studying here is to be immersed in tradition, honour, and sincere beauty.
