Advertising and Promotional Photography
Advertising Photography is used for advertising products created by
companies. Specifically, the product photos are done to attract an
audience to the product to convince them to buy it.
This is an advert for Coca-Cola Light, One of Coca-Colas
type of their namesake drink. In the background of the
photograph, there is a close-up of the Light can. On the can,
there are water droplets, indicating that the can has been
chilled and so is cool. Therefore, it would put the image in
the audiences mind, that the drink is cool and refreshing. In
the
foreground the drink is being poured from the can into a
glass. The carbonating bubbles near the top of the glass
indicates that the drink has been freshly poured and so gives an impression of the drink being
fresh and so nice to drink. The glass has the word Desire on it, implying that the Coca-Cola
Light is a desire and so a want. Ultimately it means that the audience would want the drink.
And this is supported by the other techniques discussed.
This is an advert for a radio station called
Rave Radio. The two men shown in the
center, are both wearing black and stood
steady while facing forward. To either side
are copies of the same people from their
respective sides at increasingly angled
facing ways from the center to edge of the
photo. The three copies on each side have a
rippled radio wave effect distorting them.
So the target audience will make the link of
the radio waves to the radio station. There is also a cloudy grey background, which could
mean that the radio station stands out from the rest by physically standing out in the photo.
Perhaps that is why there is a contrast of the black clothes being worn against the
background. So in the target audiences head, makes them think that Rave Radio is better than
other radio stations.
This is an advert for the US drama series,
Containment. Each of the characters shown
has a serious expression on their face,
indicating that the situation in the show is of
a serious matter for the characters. The use
of grayscale on the characters also adds to
the seriousness of the situation in the show.
The shows logo is also visible but is to the right to capture the target audiences attention to
what the series is called, without taking the focus away from the characters. The serious
expressions on the characters faces also bring the question of why they are serious to the
audience. This would then peak their interest to make want to watch the series.

Portraiture Photography
Portraiture photography is photography that depicts peoples faces
(portrait). This can be used to show an emotional tone or specific
personality.
This is a portraiture photo by a photographer, Cory Smith, which depicts a man and woman
creating a
single face with each others opposite side of their faces. The
mans right
face is shown forward facing. While the womans left side of
her face is
facing side-on. In this way, their faces are deliberately matched
together. This
could be used to bring across meaning, intended by the
photographer.
Perhaps it represents a couple completing each other and
explains why
the two have each others half making a complete face.

Documentary Photography
Documentary photography is used to convey a message to the viewer of
the photographs. Specifically this type of photography is created for
themes such as war etc..
This photo is by photographer and photojournalist, Martin Parr, who took
this photo in 1975. The photo was taken in Mankinholes Methodist Chapel,
Todmorden, England; and is part of a set of Only in England photos. The
photo appears to show two elderly women sleeping in pews. The chapel
seems more empty though as only the two women fill the two pews each.
So maybe this was on a day that the chapel wasnt in service. Perhaps the
Alexander Hartland
photographer is suggesting that it is an English behaviour to sleep
anywhere.
