Inthiscoursestudentswhoworkwithchildrenandfamilieswilldevelopaworkingknowledgeof
thesciencethatunderliesdevelopmentalpsychologyaswellasthetoolstocriticallyevaluatethetheories,
ideas,andperspectivestheywillencounterintheirclassesandtheirwork.Thecoursewillconsistof
assignedreading,classdiscussions/activitiesandapplications.Thestudentisresponsibleforallmaterial
coveredinclassaswellasallmaterialintheassignedreadings.Thiscoursefulfillsamajorrequirementfor
theB.S.inChildDevelopmentandfortheChildDevelopmentPreCredentialOptionintheDepartmentof

COURSEORGANIZATION
Teambasedlearning.Wewilluseateambasedlearningapproachinthisclass.Researchshows
thatthisactiveformoflearningissuperiortothetraditionallectureformat.Studentswillworkingroupsof
7to8membersondailyinclassactivities.Theactivitiesaredesignedtoenhanceunderstandingofthe
coursematerialandcovertopicsthatwillbeincludedonexams.Workingontheseactivitieswithyour
groupwillhelpyoutoconstructyourownknowledgeandunderstandingofthematerial.Thegoalisfor
youtoarticulate,examineandapplyyourunderstandingoftheconceptsandprincipleswediscuss.
Participatingingroupandclassdiscussionisanimportantlearningtoolandbenefitsyouaswellasothers.
ReadingandRATpreparation.Inordertomaximizelearning,itisextremelyimportantthatyou
arewellpreparedforclass.StudentsmustreadtheassignedchaptersBEFOREtheyarediscussedinclass.
Thisindividualstudyandpreparationiscriticallyimportant.Guidedstudyquestionsareavailableto
facilitatecomprehensionandretentionofthematerial.StudentsareSTRONGLYencouragedtousethese
studyguides.Guidedstudyencouragesactivereading:Readasectionofthechapter,closethebookand
answerthequestionorquestionsrelevanttothatsectionfrommemorybeforegoingontothenextsection
andthenextquestions.Completingtheguidedstudyquestionswillimproveyourwritingfluency,increase
yourrecallandcomprehensionofthereading,andhelpyoubegintheprocessofintegrationandanalysisof
theinformationyoureadbeforetheRATSandclassactivities.Thiswillalsobeavaluableresourceforthe
examstheywillhelpyoufocusonthemostimportantinformationinthereadingassignment.
Readinessassessmentprocess.Onthedaysthattextchaptersareassignedstudentswilltakea
multiplechoicetest,theindividualReadinessAssessmentTest(iRAT),overthematerialintheassigned
chapters.Next,everyoneretakesthetest,butthistimewithhisorhergroup.Inordertocompletethe
groupReadinessAssessmentTest(gRAT),membersmustreachagreementoneachquestion.Next,the
groupresponsesaresubmittedandtheanswersarerevealed.Afterthegrouptestisscored,groupsare
encouragedtoappealanyquestionsthatweremissedonthegRAT.Groupsmaysubmitawrittenargument
forwhytheanswershouldbeaccepted.Thisisanopenbookprocess,andadditionalcreditmaybeearned
forwellreasonedarguments.Finally,wewilldiscussanyconceptsorprinciplesthatwereconfusing.
Applicationsandactivities.Ondayswhennochapterreadingsareassigned,groupswillwork
togetheronactivitiesthatinvolveapplicationofthecoursematerial.Studentsareencouragedtoreviewthe
relevanttextmaterialpriortoclassastextbooksarenottobeusedduringinclassactivities.Individualand
groupresponsestoactivitieswillberecordedusingthei>clicker,soitisextremelyimportantthatyoubring
thei>clickerremotetoeachclasssessioninordertoreceivecreditforresponses.OnFridays,application
assignmentswillbedue.Someofthesewillbesubmittedonlineandsomewillrequireclassattendance.
Studyexpectations.Itisusuallyexpectedthatstudentswillspendapproximately23hoursof
studytimeoutsideofclassforeveryonehourinclass.Becausethisisa3unitclass,youshouldexpectto
studyanaverageof69hoursoutsideofclasseachweek.Somestudentsmayneedmoreoutsidestudy

Peerassessment.Threetimesduringthesemester,studentswillassessthecontributionthateach
memberoftheirgroupmadetotheactivitiesofthegroup.Contributionstothegroupincludeindividual
preparationforteamactivities,reliableclassattendance,productivecontributionstoteamdiscussions,
valuingandencouraginginputfromfellowteammembers,etc.

RATsandactivitysessions.Foreachofthe15daysthatreadingisassignedtherewillbea
ReadinessAssessmenttest:studentswilltakeanindividualtest(iRAT)worth8pointsandagrouptest
(gRAT)worth8points(16pointsx15classes).Thesesessionsareworth15pointseach,butupto16
pointsmaybeearnedonthesedaysallowingfor1pointextracreditoneachofthesedays(15totaloverthe
semester).Activitysessions(9totalinthecourse)willbedevotedtogroupactivitiesusingthematerialwe
areexamining,andpointsareearnedforindividualpreparationpriortoclassandgroupandindividual
responsesinclass.Activitysessionsareworth10pointseach,butupto12pointsmaybeearnedonthese
days.TheRATsandactivitiessessionscomprise31.5%ofthecoursegrade(315points).
TheiRATsmaybemadeupwithinoneweekifyoumissclass,butmustbetakenbeforetheunit
exam.ThegRATscannotbemadeup.BecauseRATsaregivenatthebeginningofclass,besuretoarrive
ontime!Activitypointscannotbemadeupifyoumissclass;however,2pointsextracreditwillbeapplied
foreachactivityclasssessionduringwhichyoufullyparticipate.Therefore,forexample,studentswho
arriveontimeandparticipateinallactivitysessionswillreceive18pointsextracreditoverthesemester.
Applicationsessions.ApplicationsessionsfallonFridays,andmanyoftheseassignmentswillbe
submittedonline.SeeBlackboardfordetailsaboutapplicationassignments.The11application
assignmentsareworth10pointseachandcannotbesubmittedlateormadeupunlessotherwiseindicated.
Theycomprise11%ofthecoursegrade(110points).
Peerassessment.Peerassessmentsarecompletedthreetimesduringthesemesterandareworth25
pointseach(5forsubmittingafullassessmentofyourteammembersand20possibleontheassessment
youreceivefromyourpeers).Thepeerevaluationscomprise7.5%ofthecoursegrade(75points).
Courseproject.Abasicunderstandingofresearchmethodsallowsyoutoreadandevaluate
scientificresearch,animportantskillforthosewhoworkwithchildrenandfamilies.Forthecourseproject
studentswillanalyzeempiricalresearcharticles.Thesearticleevaluationsaredesignedtogiveyoupractice
inapplyingtheknowledgeyouareacquiring.Theprojectwillincludegroupandindividualcomponents.
DuedatesandafulldescriptionoftheprojectrequirementswillbepostedonBlackboard.Theprojectis
worth15%ofthecoursegrade(150points).
Exams.Therewillbe3midtermexamsandacomprehensivefinalexam.Theexamsareworth80
pointseach(80pointsx4exams=320),andtherearemandatoryreviewsessionsfollowingeachmidterm
thatareeachworth10points(examsandreviewsessionsareworth35%ofthetotalcoursegrade).Exams
consistofmultiplechoiceandshortansweritems.Extracreditwillbeavailableoneachexam.Review
sessionscannotbemadeup.YoumustbringSCANTRONFormNo.882Etoclassbutnobluebookis
necessary.
TherewillbeNOMAKEUPEXAMSforanyreason.youhaveanemergencythatpreventsyoufrom
takingthetest,youmustcontacttheinstructorimmediately,anduponreturntoclass,youmustfurnisha

Wewilladdressthefollowingobjectives,andyouwillhaveanopportunitytodemonstrateproficiency.
1. Characterizethenatureofpsychologyasadiscipline,includingexplainingwhyitisascience,
identifyingitsprimaryobjectives(describing,understanding,andpredictingbehavior),explaining
itsmajortheoreticalperspectives,andcomparingandcontrastingitsassumptionswiththoseof
otherdisciplines.
2. Demonstrateknowledgeofbasicmeasurementissuesandtechniques,differentresearch
methodologies,andtheappropriateuseofvariousresearchdesignsforaddressingdifferenttypesof
questionsandhypotheses.
3. Usecriticalthinkingeffectively,includingevaluatingthequalityofinformation(e.g.,differentiating
empiricalevidencefromotherkinds),recognizinganddefendingagainstcommonfallaciesin
thinking,avoidingbeingswayedbyappealstoemotionorauthority,evaluatingpopularreportsof
psychologicalresearch,andconstructingeffectivearguments.
4. Displaycriticalthinkingvaluesconsistentwithpsychologyasanempiricalscience,including
