EXCHANGE DUBLIN

PRESS RELEASE
Exchange Dublin is both a statement of intent and
an invitation to the city.
Exchange Dublin is a Collective Arts Centre in Temple Bar that was set up
in June of 2009. It was conceived of, set up and is run entirely by young
people for hosting discussions, visual arts, performance, dance and music
events. Most projects originate from autonomous groups that use the space
as a hub for their activity. Representatives from these groups and interested
individuals form the general Exchange Dublin Collective that programmes
and coordinates events in the space. All work is voluntary and no one is
paid. Exchange Dublin is a non-alcohol space and events are open to people
of all ages.
Exchange Dublin creates a common public space for cross disciplinary
awareness, conversation and action. It is intended to provide an infrastructure for inquiry, discourse and collaboration. There are already established
informal networks of creative young people in and around Dublin who are
making work with no money, for the love of it. What often stunts this work
at a crucial stage is a lack of space to present it, be it a space for music
events, exhibitions, meetings etc. If you provide space for these projects in
central locations you move the discussions from the suburbs and garages
where it can be lost, to the heart of the cultural life and ideas. Space is the
fundamental requirement that facilitates people to make work.
THIS IS A SPACE FOR NEW IDEAS
THIS IS A SPACE FOR CONNECTIONS
THIS IS A SPACE FOR ACTION

Our objective is...

ONE TO PROVIDE A SPACE IN DUBLIN CITY CENTRE THAT IS OPEN
UNTIL LATE FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES.
TWO TO ORGANISE ARTISTIC, PERFORMANCE AND MUSIC EVENTS
WITH A STRONG EMPHASIS ON SUPPORTING THE WORK OF YOUNG
PEOPLE.
THREE TO BE AN INDEPENDENT, NON-COMMERCIAL SPACE RUN
ENTIRELY BY VOLUNTEERS.
FOUR TO BE A BUSY CENTRE OF ACTIVITY AND FRESH IDEAS PLAYING
FIVE AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE CULTURAL AND POLITICAL FABRIC OF DUBLIN CITY.
SIX TO ENCOURAGE AND PROVIDE A FORUM FOR POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL DISCOURSE.
SEVEN TO PROVIDE A CENTRE FOR COLLABORATION BETWEEN
CREATIVE YOUNG PEOPLE.
EIGHT TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE IN DECISION MAKING AND DAY TO DAY RUNNING OF THE SPACE AS VOLUNTEERS.
NINE TO DEVELOP THE SKILLS OF ALL THOSE INVOLVED THROUGH
WORKSHOPS, SKILL SHARE AND CONSTRUCTIVE PEER CRITIQUE.
TEN TO HAVE A FUN TIME DOING ALL OF THE ABOVE.

Capoeira Angola
Capoeira is part fight, part dance, part ritual, originating from the tradition of slave
resistance in Brazil. The Angola form emphasizes slow, deceptive movement and
good-natured trickery. Hitting the opponent directly or intentionally is frowned
upon and the aim is rather to suggest movement of a hit and avoid it gracefully.
The lessons are held biweekly and are open to anyone who likes a bit of nonviolent, dance fighting.
