It is highly necessary to give an introduction to a Field Study
of ANDRO . In the discipline of geography the importance of
conducting a field - work at the outside class room is quite
necessary . Students are to be well equipped with practical works
besides doing only in the class room but they need to see the
particular area or region in order to get the facts and figures what
they have learnt and acquired knowledge from the class . The
general features of the geographical information of a particular
area or region is to be studied outside which they can be able to
identified and verified what actually seen and learnt as described
by the teachers. It is therefore, necessary to do the works of the
Field Study. In this light we can also able to describe the different
geographical features and the activities of the peoples of that
particular area or region by collecting data and information from
the area or region. For this purpose we are asked to conduct a
Field Study Tour to ANDRO as its has special aspects like
Geographical features, Historical aspects, Cultural and Heritage
aspects, and most importantly the emerging Tourist hotspot not
only in Manipur but also in the entire north east region of the
which the community has preserved the way of life and beliefs
since the time immemorial. The most significant and important
practice of the community is that of preserving the SACRED FIRE
OF ANDRO .
It is said that the fire has been kept brning since it was
introduced to the people of Manipur by POIREITON, the king of
the KHUMAN CLAN which had migrated from the mainland of
Indian subcontinent around 1srt Century A.D. who is regarded to
have brought a turning point in the Manipuri civilization, turning
the nomadic hunters to a well organized agrarian community.
Subsequently it was NONGDA LAIREN PAKHANGBA who
ascended the throne as the First King Of Manipur after him.Till
today the sacred fire burns in the temple of PANAM NINGTHOU
TEMPLE, the governing diety of the village. Every two households
in the village is entrusted with responsibility of managing the fire
for one day, which is passed on to the next two houses the next
day and so on throughout the entire year until each household
would have borne the responsibility at least once in a year. In way
the villager are preserving the SACRED FIRE OF ANDRO in
the form of PANAM NINGTHOU TEMPLE OF ANDRO where the
sacred fire of Andro is preserving and maintaining.
they had earlier settled in Kangla ( the site which held the
palaces of the Meitei Kings) but were driven from there by Nongda
Lairen Pakhangba who asended the throne as the first King of the
Ningthouja Clan who is now regarded as the first Manipuri King.
The chakpas thus got scattered towards the foothills, one group of
which settled in the foothills of the Nongmaiching Hills which
came to be known as Andro thereafter.
FacilIty:
The only main means of transportation is the Imphal- YaipokAndro Road which has a total length of 26 kilometers. The road is
double lane but not completely metal road which is needed to
broaden for better transportation. In view of the increasing
population and large attraction of tourists both local and outsiders
it is quite necessary to do so so as to enable the give ease to all.
In the village inter village road are connected with lanes of sand
and stone surface. This is another setback during the rainy season
with muddy surface. Overall transport facility is meagerly good.

except for few idols. The fire was buried in ashes and only a small
bellow of smoke came out of it. It looks as if the fire was dying.
The preist took a tong and cleared the ashes. It was suppressed to
see the wood, steadily burning through without any flame. The
slow rate of burning meant, it is the most convenient and
cheapest way of keeping the fire alive. It is told that men folks for
many generations have taken turns building the fire, and
therefore keeping the tradition alive. The locals are very proud of
this tradition they have kept alive for many years more than
thousand years.
