Carriazo, capital del municipio de Ribamontn al Mar, es un pequeo

y tranquilo pueblo de carcter rural. En el que, huyendo del gento de
Somo y Loredo, sus visitantes pueden disfrutar de un agradable paseo
por su irregular entramado de calles, contemplando buenas muestras
de la arquitectura tradicional montaesa y encinas centenarias.
Carriazo, capital of the municipality of Ribamontn al Mar,

is a small and peaceful rural town. The visitors to the same,
fleeing the crowds of Somo and Loredo, can enjoy a pleasant walk
through its irregular network of streets, observing good samples
of the traditional architecture of the region and century-old oaks.

Tranquilidad
Carriazo, es por mritos histricos la capital del Ayuntamiento de Ribamontn al Mar y uno de los pueblos con
mayor encanto del municipio. Es tranquilo y acogedor e ideal para los que buscan la calma y el silencio.
Aunque tradicionalmente ganadero, hoy en da se ha convertido en un pueblo marcadamente residencial. En l se
puede disfrutar de apacibles y largos paseos por sus tranquilas calles, entre casonas montaesas y a la sombra de
frondosos robles y encinas.
Entre las plantaciones de eucaliptos de sus montes an se conservan pequeos rodales de robles y castaos, muestra
de la vegetacin que de forma natural se desarrollaba en el pasado, en ellos habitan zorros, jabales y corzos.
Cuenta con un patrimonio artstico de gran encanto, destacando el Palacio del siglo XVIII de los Solano-Setin con su
escudo de armas y su capilla, la humilde Iglesia de San Martn y la Ermita de San Antonio.
Carriazo, due to its historic merits, is the capital of the Township of Ribamontn al Mar, and one of the towns
with the greatest charm in the municipality. It is peaceful and cosy, ideal for those who are seeking for a calm
and quiet environment.
Although traditionally a cattle farming area, nowadays it has become a markedly residential town. One can enjoy
quiet and long walks along its peaceful streets, between large typical villas and in the shadow of leafy oak and
holm-oak trees.
Among the eucalyptus plantations in surrounding forests there are still stands of oak trees and chestnut trees, a sample
of the vegetation that naturally grew in the past, which is inhabited by foxes, boars and roe deer.

cualquiera de sus tres lomas:
Corona, Funegra y Calobro. Hacia el oeste se descubre la
baha de Santander en todo su esplendor y hacia el sur podemos admirar el valle de Ribamontn al Monte, ayuntamiento vecino, con los montes del valle de San Roque de
Riomiera como teln de fondo.

It has an artistic heritage of great charm, among which the

Palace of the 18th century of the Solano-Setin can be pointed out, with its coat of arms and chapel, as well as the simple Church of San Martn and the Shrine of San Antonio.
Magnificent views can be seen from any of its three hills:
Corona, Funegra and Calobro. Towards the west there is
the bay of Santander in all of its splendour, and towards the
south one can admire the valley of Ribamontn al Monte, the
neighbouring Township, with the forests of the San Roque valley of the Miera River as a backdrop.

Castanedo, situado en el interior del municipio de Ribamontn al
Mar y a escasos kilmetros de la playa, es un pueblo ganadero

de amplias mieses, estrechos caminos y casas diseminadas. Es
esencialmente un lugar tranquilo en el que descansar y disfrutar

de la naturaleza.
Castanedo, situated in the interior of the municipality of Ri-
bamontn al Mar and a few kilometres from the beach, is a cattle
farming community with extensive cornfields, narrow roads and

houses spread throughout. It is essentially a peaceful place in
which to relax and enjoy nature.

Verde Mies
Situado en la zona interior del municipio de Ribamontn al Mar, Castanedo es un pequeo pueblo de tradicin ganadera que ha sabido adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos. Incorporando en sus ganaderas las ltimas tecnologas han
logrado que stas sean altamente competitivas y rentables. Con todo ello, han convertido al municipio de Ribamontn al Mar, de marcado carcter turstico, en el mayor productor de leche de Cantabria.
El paisaje de Castanedo, es rural de extensas praderas que cambian de color a lo largo del ao en funcin del cultivo
de sus tierras y de vacas frisonas que se alimentan de estos pastos.
En este ambiente ganadero, es interesante resear la presencia de numerosos silos que, prximos a las antiguas
cuadras, forman parte de una interesante arquitectura popular. De forma cilndrica, estos eran antiguos almacenes
a los que hoy en da, con el fin de su conservacin y para otorgarles otro uso, se les cubre con un tejado.
Castanedo, situated in the interior of the municipality of Ribamontn al Mar, is a small town with a cattle farming
tradition that has learned how to adapt to the new age. By incorporating the latest technologies into its stockbreeding,
it has achieved a highly competitive and profitable business. Event so, they have transformed the municipality of Ribamontn al Mar, which has a definite tourist nature, into the largest dairy producer of Cantabria.
The landscape of Castanedo is a rural landscape of extensive meadowland, which changes colour throughout the
year, according to the crops of the land and Friesian cows that feed off these pastures.
In this cattle farming environment, it is interesting to notice the presence of numerous silos that, next to the old stables, form part of an interesting popular architecture. Cylindrical in shape, these were old warehouses that nowadays,
for the preservation of the same and to give them another use, are covered with tiled roofs.
La Iglesia de San Salvador, antiguo lugar de paso en el Camino de Santiago hacia Puente Agero, es hoy una humilde
fbrica de piedra encalada de blanco, en la que se conservan
dos interesantes capiteles romnicos, los restos ms antiguos de la arquitectura religiosa del municipio de Ribamontn al Mar.

Desde el Alto de El Tirado, al que se puede acceder en coche,

se contempla una magnfica panormica de los valles trasmeranos y de la Baha de Santander.
The Church of San Salvador, an old site on the way to Puente Agero along the St. James Way, is today a simple factory
of whitewashed stone, in which two interesting Romanesque
steeples are preserved, the oldest remnants of the religious
architecture of the municipality of Ribamontn al Mar.
From the Hill of El Tirado, which can be reached by car, it is
possible to view a magnificent landscape of the valleys of the
Cantabrian regin of Trasmiera and of the bay of Santander.

Galizano, situado al norte del municipio de Ribamontn al Mar,

es una acogedora localidad en la que el sector turstico cada vez
est cobrando ms importancia.
Con hermosas playas y kilmetros de acantilado, es un destino
perfecto para aquellas personas que disfrutan del mar y buscan
un lugar donde descansar.
Galizano, situated to the north of the municipality of Ribamontn al Mar, is a cosy town in which the tourist sector is gaining
increasingly more importance. With beautiful beaches and kilometres of cliffs, it is a perfect destination for those who enjoy the
sea and are in search of a place to relax.

Descanso
Galizano, situado al norte del municipio de Ribamontn al Mar, de tradicin ganadera y cuyo origen nos remonta a la
poca de los romanos, se ha consolidado en la ltima dcada como pueblo turstico de segunda residencia.
La playa de La Canal, de singular belleza por las tonalidades doradas y rojizas de su roquedo, se haya a kilmetro y
medio del ncleo urbano. Es una playa tranquila que en pleamar, queda en su parte central cubierta de agua, convirtindola en una gran piscina de escasa peligrosidad, ideal para el bao y perfecta para acudir con nios.
Desde la playa hasta el mirador de la cueva de Cucabrera, donde se pueden contemplar los acantilados y las playas de Langre y Galizano, encontramos varios balcones de piedra, perfectamente recortados, que no son ms que
antiguas canteras de roca arenisca que hoy forman los muros de las iglesias, ermitas y casonas montaesas de la
regin cntabra.
La playa de Arenillas o Arnillas, como la llaman las gentes del lugar, es una pequea cala situada entre la playa
Grande de Langre y La Canal de Galizano. Con fondo rocoso, se distingue por ser uno de los rincones del municipio
donde con mayor fuerza golpea el mar.
Galizano, situated to the north of the municipality of Ribamontn al Mar, which is known for its cattle farming tradition,
and whose origin goes back to the period of the Romans, has become a second home tourist town in the last decade.
The beach of La Canal, of singular beauty due to the reddish golden tones of its crags, is one kilometre and a half from
the town centre. It is a peaceful beach, which is centrally covered with water at high tide, becoming a large pool with
minimum possibility of danger, ideal for swimming and perfect for visiting with children.
From the beach to the viewing point of the cave of Cucabrera, where the cliffs and the beaches of Langre and Galizano
can be admired, we can find several perfectly shaped stone ledges, which are nothing but old quarries of sandy rock
that today make up the walls of the churches, shrines and large typical villas of the Cantabrian region.

El Alto de San Pantalen, donde se ubica la ermita que le da

nombre, en un da despejado, es uno de los mejores lugares para
divisar el municipio y el entorno de la Baha, perfilado por las
montaas de la Cordillera Cantbrica y los Picos de Europa.
The beach of Arenillas or Arnillas, as local residents call it, is a

small cove situated between the beaches of La Grande of Langre
and La Canal of Galizano. With a rocky bottom, it is distinguished
for being one of the spots of the municipality where the sea strikes with the greatest force.
On a clear day, one of the best places for viewing the municipality and surrounding bay area is from the Hill of San Pantalen,
which derives its name from the shrine located there, where the
view is outlined by the Cantabrian Range and the Picos de Europa, litteraly Peaks of Europe.

Langre es una pequea localidad, modelo de desarrollo de turismo sostenible, que posee uno de los ms hermosos parajes
de toda la cornisa Cantbrica. Las escarpadas paredes de los
acantilados, sus dos maravillosas playas La Grande y La Pequea, el afamado Pico de Langre y el bravo mar Cantbrico, componen un paisaje que impresiona por su naturalidad y conquista
por su belleza.
Langre is a small town, which is a model of sustainable tourism development, having one of the most beautiful spots of all
the Cantabrian coast. The steep walls of the cliffs, the two marvellous beaches of La Grande and La Pequea, the famous Pico de
Langre and the wild Cantabrian sea, comprise a landscape that really impresses due to its naturalness and captivates by its beauty.

Langre, con una poblacin que apenas supera el centenar de habitantes, es una de las pocas localidades costeras
que, huyendo del desarrollo urbanstico, mantiene casi intacto un patrimonio paisajstico de enorme belleza, dndose a conocer por atesorar una de las playas ms hermosas del litoral Cantbrico.
La playa de Langre, con forma de media luna y flanqueada por un acantilado de ms de veinticinco metros, queda
dividida en dos por un saliente rocoso.
La Pequea, situada al oeste, es una tranquila y pequea cala de escaso oleaje custodiada por Pico de Langre, roca
con forma de esfinge, que por su belleza, fue escogida por la revista Nacional Geographic para una de sus portadas.
La Grande, con una extensin de cerca de un kilmetro, fue una de las primeras playas nudistas de la regin. Abierta
al mar y de fuerte oleaje, es frecuentada por devotos del surf durante todo el ao.
Langre, with a population that barely exceeds one hundred inhabitants, is one of the few coastal towns that, fleeing
urban development, maintains, almost intact, a heritage landscape of enormous beauty, famous for having one of the
most beautiful beaches of the Cantabrian seaboard.
The beach of Langre, shaped like a half moon and flanked by a cliff more than twenty-five metres high, is divided into
two by a rocky ledge.
La Pequea, situated to the west, is a peaceful and small cove of low swells guarded by Pico de Langre, a sphinx shaped
rock, which due to its beauty was chosen by the National Geographic magazine for one of its covers.
La Grande, with an extension of nearly one kilometre, was one of the first nudist beaches of the region. Open to the sea
and with large waves, it is visited by surfing fans throughout the entire year.

Siguiendo la lnea de la costa en direccin a Loredo, al pie de los
acantilados, se encuentran las piscinas naturales de Llaranza, aunque de difcil acceso, se puede descender a ellas siguiendo los senderos de los pescadores.

En el pueblo, prximo a la Iglesia de San Flix del s. XVII, encontramos un monumento, obra del escultor cntabro Jess Otero, dedicado a un lugareo que perdi su vida junto a veinte marineros
tras el hundimiento del mercante Elorrio frente a las costas de este
hermossimo pueblo.
Following along the coast towards Loredo, at the foot of the cliffs, there
are the natural pools os Llaranza and despite its difficult access, they
can be reached by descending down the fishermens trails.

In the town, next to the Church of San Flix of the 17th century, there
is a monument, work of the Cantabrian sculptor Jess Otero, which
was dedicated to a local resident who lost his life, along with twenty
sailors, after the sinking of the merchant ship Elorrio, in front of the
coasts of this very lovely town.

Loredo, lugar destacado de la costa oriental de Cantabria, brinda

la oportunidad de disfrutar de un esplndido espacio natural con
una de las playas ms amplias y hermosas de la regin. Ofrece al
visitante durante la poca estival numerosos eventos entre los que
destacan su tradicional Derby de Caballos y las fiestas patronales
de la Virgen de Latas.
Loredo, a noticeable place on the eastern coast of Cantabria,

offers the opportunity to enjoy a splendid natural area, which has
one of the most beautiful and extensive beaches of the region.
It offers visitors numerous events during the summer season,
among which the traditional Horse Derby stands out, as well as
the local patron saints festivals of the Virgen de Latas.
LOREDO
Naturaleza
Loredo es una pequea localidad costera a la que se accede por la carretera regional que une Somo y Santoa y
posee una de las playas ms visitadas y admiradas de la regin.
Menos bulliciosa que las playas de Somo, la playa de Loredo, de fina arena y aguas claras, tiene una longitud de kilmetro y medio. En ella, con una tradicin de ms de cincuenta aos, todos los veranos se celebra el popular Derby.
Esta prueba que comenz como carrera de caballos y burros para animar las fiestas patronales, ao tras ao fue
ganando notoriedad, hasta convertirse en una competicin a la que acuden los ms prestigiosos caballos y jinetes
nacionales e internacionales, convirtindose en uno de los principales atractivos tursticos de la zona.
Al norte, Los Tranquilos es una pequea y sosegada playa de escaso oleaje, perfecta para el bao y para iniciarse
en el buceo y en la prctica del SUP (Stand up paddle surf), actualmente tan de moda. A ella, en pleamar, se accede
desde el mirador que hay frente a la isla de Santa Marina, lugar desde el que se puede disfrutar de unas extraordinarias vistas de las playas de Somo y la baha de Santander.
Loredo, with one of the most visited and admired beaches of the region, is a small coastal town that can be reached
by the regional highway that connects Somo and Santoa.
This beach comprised of fine sand and crystal clear water, one and a half kilometres long, is not as crowded as the
beaches of Somo. The popular Derby, which has been traditional for more than fifty years, is held every summer there.
This competition began as a horse and donkey race to liven up the local patron saints festivals, year after year it gained
more renown, being considered today a competition wherein the most prestigious horses and national riders compete,
becoming one of the main tourist attractions of the area.
To the north, there is Los Tranquilos, a small and calm beach of low swells, perfect for swimming and initiating in the
sport of diving, as well as the practice of SUP (Stand up paddle surfing), which is currently so popular. This beach can
be reached, at high tide, from the viewing point that is in front of the Santa Marina island, a place from where one can
enjoy some extraordinary views of the beaches of Somo and the bay of Santander.

LOREDO
Prxima al ncleo urbano de Loredo, y compartiendo su titularidad con Somo, se encuentra el Santuario, de advocacin
mariana, de Nuestra Seora de Latas, cuya festividad se celebra, como otras muchas de la regin, el da 8 de septiembre. Los actos religiosos y festivos son numerosos y muy variados, hemos de destacar la procesin martima por la baha
que tiene lugar el domingo anterior a la fiesta.
Next to the city centre of Loredo, and sharing ownership with

Somo, there is the Sanctuary, which is devoted to the Virgin
of Nuestra Seora de Latas, whose festivity is celebrated,
as many others of the region, on September 8. The religious
services and festivals are numerous and very diverse, among
which we can point out the bay maritime procession that
takes place the Sunday before the festivity.

Playas
Situado al Oeste del municipio de Ribamontn al Mar, el pueblo de Somo, por su proximidad a la capital cntabra y sus
kilmetros de playa, se ha consolidado como uno de los principales destinos vacacionales de Cantabria.
Ya en la dcada de los sesenta, santanderinos y madrileos escogen este maravilloso pueblo como lugar de recreo
en la poca estival. Actualmente, son gentes de muy diversos lugares las que lo visitan, atrados por un espacio natural que destaca por su paisaje y que brinda la oportunidad de realizar multitud de actividades al aire libre.
Somo posee uno de los arenales ms extensos de Cantabria, la playa de Las Quebrantas y El Puntal, constituyen
cuatro kilmetros de arena fina y dorada que protegen la baha del fuerte oleaje del mar Cantbrico.
A la playa de Las Quebrantas, a mar abierto, se accede directamente desde el paseo martimo, y es perfecta para iniciarse
en la prctica del surf. Durante el verano, se desarrollan animadas competiciones de distintas modalidades de este deporte. En bajamar, quedan al descubierto los restos de un barco varado hace ms de treinta aos.
The town of Somo is situated to the east of the municipality of Ribamontn al Mar, which due to its proximity to Santander, the capital, and its many kilometres of beaches, has become one of the main vacation sites of Cantabria.
Starting from way back in the sixties, people from Santander and residents of Madrid chose this marvellous town as
a favourite recreation site during the summer season. Currently, people from many different places visit the town,
attracted by its natural areas, which are outstanding due to the landscape and the opportunity of enjoying numerous
outdoor activities.
Somo has one of the most extensive beaches of Cantabria, the beaches of Las Quebrantas and El Puntal, which
comprise four kilometres of fine golden sand that protects the bay from the strong swell of the Cantabrian Sea.
The beach of Las Quebrantas, in open water, can be reached directly from the promenade, a perfect place for initiating
in the practice of surfing. During the summer, lively surfing competitions are held in different modalities of this sport.
At low tide, one can see the remains of a shipwreck that happened more than thirty years ago.

Suesa, a escasos kilmetros de las playas de Somo y Loredo, es un

apacible pueblo con grandes casonas montaesas y una hermosa
plaza que an conserva la esencia de tiempos pasados. Situado
junto a la desembocadura del ro Miera es un lugar ideal para contemplar la naturaleza y disfrutar de ella realizando multitud de actividades al aire libre.
Suesa, only a few kilometres from the beaches of Somo and

Loredo, is a peaceful town with large typical villas and a beautiful
plaza that still preserves the essence of bygone eras. Situated
next to the estuary of the Miera River, it is an ideal place to observe nature and enjoy it practicing numerous outdoor activities.

Monumental
El pueblo de Suesa, se encuentra situado junto a la ra de Cubas. Un estuario donde se mezclan las aguas dulces
del ro Miera y las saladas del mar Cantbrico, es una de las zonas de mayor inters ecolgico del Ayuntamiento de
Ribamontn al Mar. Esta ra es perfecta para realizar una travesa en piragua y practicar SUP (stand up paddle surf),
aprovechando la subida y bajada de las mareas. A lo largo del recorrido se pueden observar el Convento de Clausura
de las Trinitarias datado del S. XVII, y entre arenales y juncos multitud de aves entre las que destacan por su belleza
la garza real y los cisnes.
En el centro del pueblo, dominado por la Iglesia de Santa Eulalia, se encuentran buenas representaciones de la arquitectura de los S. XVII y S. XVIII de Cantabria. Dos casonas montaesas, la de los Cubas y los Presmanes, destacan por
sus escudos barrocos y el buen estado de conservacin de las mismas. En la tapia de la casona de los Presmanes
se conserva el reloj de sol barroco ms decorado encontrado en Cantabria.
The town of Suesa is situated next to the Ra de Cubas, an estuary where the fresh water of the Miera River mixes
with the salt water of the Cantabrian Sea, which is one of the areas of greatest ecological interest in the township of
Ribamontn al Mar. This estuary is perfect for crossing in canoe and practising SUP (stand up paddle surfing), taking
advantage of the rise and fall of the tides. Along the journey one can see the Cloister of the Trinitarias, dated from the
17th century, and among the sandy beaches and reeds there are a multitude of birds, from which the grey heron and
swans can be pointed out.
In the centre of the town, overlooked by the Church of Santa Eulalia, good samples can be seen of the architecture
of 17th and 18th century of Cantabria. Two large typical homes, that of the Cubas and the Presmanes, stand out due
to their baroque coat of arms and the good condition of preservation of them. On the wall of the large house of the
Presmanes, the most ornamented baroque sundial in Cantabria can be seen.

El mar Cantbrico es la mejor de las despensas de Ribamontn al Mar. En las

mesas de los restaurantes nunca falta una buena seleccin de pescados capturados diariamente por pequeas embarcaciones o pescadores de caa. Suelen servirse a la plancha generalmente para degustar toda su frescura, pero los
mens de los establecimientos hosteleros tambin suelen ofrecer variedades
al horno y a la cazuela, al estilo de algunas de las recetas marineras ms tradicionales, como la merluza en salsa verde o los maganos encebollados.
La parrillada de pescado es una de las elecciones ms populares: lubinas, cabrachos, bocartes y sardinas. Estas ltimas, asadas, son un plato exquisito que
tambin puede pedirse a parte. Las rabas de calamar son otro de los platos que
uno debe probar, un bocado tpico que aqu alcanza cotas inigualables.
Los mariscos en Ribamontn al Mar merecen un captulo a parte. Multitud de
restaurantes del municipio poseen vivero propio y ofrecen la posibilidad a los
clientes de elegir su propia pieza.
No se puede abandonar esta zona sin probar las excelentes almejas a la cazuela. Tampoco los percebes. Aqu, estos crustceos gozan de merecida fama,
gracias al hecho de haberse criado en las agitadas aguas del Cantbrico, ricas
en fitoplancton y rocas.... Lo mismo ocurre con los centollos, las ncoras y las

tables there is always a great selection of fishes, daily caught by small boats
or anglers. They are usually served grilled to taste all their freshness, but the
menus of the restaurants usually offer baked and stewed varieties too, in the
style of the most traditional recipes from the sea, like hake in green sauce or
cuttlefish with onions.
The grilled fish platter is one of the most popular choices: sea bass, scorpionfish, anchovies and sardines. Grilled sardines are a delicious dish that can also
be ordered separately. The rabas or fried squids are a typical dish one must try,
since its quality in Cantabria is unequalled.
In Ribamontn al Mar seafood deserves a separate chapter. Numerous restaurants of the municipality possess their own hatchery and offer the customers
the possibility of choosing their own catch.
One cannot leave this area without tasting the exquisite stewed clams. Neither
the barnacles. Here, these crustaceans deserve its well-earned reputation,
thanks to the fact of having grown up in the rough waters of the Cantabrian, rich
in phytoplankton and rocks. The same applies to the spider crabs, small crabs
and the crayfishes, which can be ordered boiled or grilled. The common lobsters

de marinero, eminentemente ganadero. El vacuno es la carne por excelencia de
toda Cantabria y este municipio no es una excepcin en la oferta de este tipo de
carne en todas sus variedades, como por ejemplo las carrilleras, el solomillo, el
entrecot con salsa de queso...
Pero donde ms puede apreciarse la vocacin ganadera de este municipio es en
los productos derivados de la leche, que son en lneas generales una de las especialidades ms reconocidas de la gastronoma de toda Cantabria. Aqu, Galizano
y Suesa criaron fama en la produccin de quesos y mantequilla, que exportaban
desde el que hoy es uno de los municipios de la regin con mayor cuota lctea.
Otra de las caractersticas compartidas por la gastronoma local y la del resto de
Cantabria es la buena calidad hortofrutcola. De sus rboles se recolectan productos de los que se derivan excelentes mermeladas para combinar con la gran
variedad de quesos y postres caseros de los establecimientos del municipio. Un
maridaje perfecto para llevarse de Ribamontn al Mar un buen sabor de boca.

Another characteristic shared by the local cuisine and the rest of Cantabria is
the great quality of their fruit and vegetable products. The products that will be
used in jam making are gathered from its trees and this exquisite jam will combine perfectly with the wide variety of cheeses and homemade desserts of the

Los parajes del Ayuntamiento de Ribamontn al Mar han sido utilizados por varias compaas para rodar sus anuncios publicitarios, desde Iberdrola, con su
anuncio del ao 2000 con el que TVE1 nos dio la bienvenida al siglo XXI, hasta
multinacionales como Renault (en el ao 2006) y Audi (en el ao 2008). Incluso
nuestro cine espaol ha encontrado en este maravilloso entorno el fondo de sus
decorados. La prestigiosa y galardonada directora de cine Pilar Mir, rod aqu
su pelcula Werter en el ao 1986, con artistas de la talla de Mercedes Sampietro,
Eusebio Poncela y Vicky Pea.
The sites comprised within the City Council of Ribamontn al Mar have been utilised
by several companies to film their advertisements, from Iberdrola, with its publicity in the year 2000, in which the TVE1 welcomed us to the 21st century, to multinationals such as Renault (in the year 2006) and Audi (in the year 2008). Even
our Spanish movies have found the backdrop for their settings in this marvellous
environment. The prestigious and prizewinning movie director, Pilar Mir, filmed
her movie Werter here in the year 1986, with well-known artists such as Mercedes
Sampietro, Eusebio Poncela and Vicky Pea.

Did you know that, Casa Lola located in Somo, became the first workshop in Spain to manufacture surfboards? It
was founded by Carlos Beraza, Jos Manuel Merodio, igo Letamendia and Ral Dourdil in 1973, and managed to sell
about one hundred boards under the brand of Santa Marina, boards that nowadays are considered authentic relics by
all the surfers.

Pero no ha sido l el nico artista que ha elegido el municipio de Ribamontn al Mar, recientemente
LA SONRISA DE JULIA ha grabado en sus playas y acantilados el videoclip del single de lanzamiento Puedo, de su cuarto disco El hombre que olvid su nombre.

The beaches of Langre resound with Spanish pop music. EL PESCAO, which is the stage name of David
Otero, a long-time member of the music group El Canto del Loco, has launched a single with his record
called Nada Lgico. For the video clip of his first single, Castillo de Arena, he chose the marvellous
Playa Pequea of Langre as his setting.
But he has not been the only artist that has chosen the municipality of Ribamontn al Mar, recently
LA SONRISA DE JULIA has recorded on its beaches and cliffs, the video clip of the single called Puedo, of its fourth record, El hombre que olvid su nombre (The man who forgot his name).

REALIDAD, FICCIN O DELIRIO?
Creer o no creer, esa es la cuestin. Segn narra el escritor argentino Abel Basti, en su libro El exilio de Hitler, el
Fhrer no se suicid, sino que escap de Alemania acompaado de Eva Braun y lleg a Espaa en submarino. Descanso unos das en un establecimiento hotelero de Somo, antes de continuar su viaje hacia Argentina.
REALITY, FICTION OR DELIRIUM?

To believe or not to believe, that is the question. According to the Argentine writer, Abel Basti, in his book titled,
The Exile of Hitler, the Fhrer did not commit suicide, but escaped from Germany accompanied by Eva Braun and
arrived in Spain in a submarine. There he rested a few days in a hotel in Somo, before continuing his trip to Argentina.

Son numerosos los barcos que por causa de alguna galerna, del fuerte oleaje o por fallo mecnico, se han hundido
frente a la costa del municipio de Ribamontn al Mar. Elin Chirtine, Atlntico, Osthav y Boquern son algunos de ellos.
En el ao 2011 se cumpli el 50 aniversario del hundimiento del barco Elorrio frente a los acantilados de Langre. En l
fallecieron veinte marineros y un vecino de la localidad en su intento de socorrer a sus tripulantes.
HIT AND SUNKEN
There are numerous ships, which due to a northwest wind, or the strong surf or mechanical failure, have sunken in front
of the coast of the municipality of Ribamontn al Mar. Elin Chirtine, Atlntico, Osthav and Boquern are some of these
wrecks. 2011 was the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Elorrio, in front of the cliffs of Langre. Twenty sailors died in
this shipwreck, as well as a resident of the town, in his attempt to help the crew members.

Para los vecinos de Ribamontn al Mar llegar a la ciudad de Santander en barco es algo habitual. Ya desde mediados
del s. XIX la empresa de vapores La Corconera establece un servicio regular de transbordo de pasajeros que une la
Playa del Puntal de Somo con Santander. Actualmente, existe un servicio de lanchas que une Santander y Somo y en
los meses de julio y agosto el servicio se amplia con la lnea Santander-Playa del Puntal.
ALL ABOARD!
For residents of Ribamontn al Mar, it is usual to travel to the city of Santander by ship. Already from the middle of the
19th century, the steamship company, La Corconera, established a regular passenger transfer service, connecting the
Playa del Puntal of Somo with Santander. Currently, there is a boat service connecting Santander and Somo, and during
the months of July and August, the service is extended to cover the line of Santander-Playa del Puntal.
DOS GRANDES DE LAS LETRAS
El escritor Federico Garca Lorca consta como visitante en los libros de registro de la ya desaparecida pensin Villa
Matilde en Somo. Fue en el verano de 1932 cuando el poeta y dramaturgo de la Generacin del 27 cruz la Baha para
visitar a su amigo Fernando de los Ros, ministro de la Segunda Repblica que disfrutaba de unos das de descanso
hospedado en esta localidad.
Otra gran escritora, la cntabra Concha Espina, candidata al Premio Nobel de Literatura en tres ocasiones, encontr la inspiracin para su ltima novela Una novela de amor en el pueblo de Loredo, en la casa de su hijo Luis de la
Serna, donde pas largas temporadas.

TWO FAMOUS WRITERS

The writer Federico Garca Lorca is registered in the visitors book of the already long-gone hostel known as Villa Matilde in Somo. It was in the summer of 1932 when the poet and playwright of Generation of 27 crossed the Bay to visit his
friend Fernando de los Ros, minister of the Spanish Second Republic, who was resting for some days in this town.
Another great writer, the Cantabrian Concha Espina, candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature on three occasions,
found the inspiration for her last novel, Una novela de amor (A love story) in the town of Loredo, in the house of her son
Luis de la Serna, where she spent long periods of time.

La costa cantbrica se encuentra sometida de forma constante a la accin erosiva del agua por lo que adquiere formas muy diversas. Una de estas curiosas formas
es la pata del dragn que podemos contemplar en Langre, un acantilado cuya forma simula las garras de un dragn. Las olas y las corrientes marinas no solo
baan nuestras playas y acantilados sino que moldean su forma y esculpen figuras increbles.
Desde lo alto de los acantilados de Langre se puede admirar la belleza de la baha de Santander, la isla de Santa Marina y el mar Cantbrico y, con un poco de imaginacin, tambin se puede disfrutar de las maravillosas formas esculpidas al pie de los acantilados.
The Cantabrian coast is constantly subject to the erosive action of water, therefore it takes very diverse forms. One of this curious forms is the paw of the dragon,
which we can find in Langre. It is a cliff that looks like the claws of a dragon. Waves and sea currents not only cover our beaches and cliffs, but also mould their form
and sculpt incredible figures.
From the top of the cliffs of Langre one can contemplate the beauty of the bay of Santander, the island of Santa Marina and the Cantabrian Sea and, with a bit of
imagination, one can also enjoy the wonderful forms sculpted at the foot of the cliffs.

los submarinistas del Centro de Investigaciones Submarinas (CIS) Juan Giribet,
Jos Manuel Gutirrez Mecolay Meco, Jos Mara Maruri Josechu, Manuel Martnez Lolis y Antonio Sez Doc, entre otros .
En 1963, el santanderino Jess Fiochi se convierte en el primer surfer espaol
al cabalgar una ola en El Sardinero con su Barland trada de Biarritz. En 1964,
inspirado en la tabla de Fiochi, Juan Giribet fabrica la primera tabla de surf mediante el sistema de cuadernas, tabla con la que empiezan a surfear el resto de
sus compaeros del CIS. Paralelamente, Jos Manuel Merodio realizaba, ayudado por Carlos Beraza, sus primeros experimentos para, en 1965, dar forma a la
primera tabla de poliestireno, fibra de vidrio y polister. Con el descubrimiento
de la existencia de la fbrica Barland en Francia, son numerosos los nombres
que abandonan el planki para sumarse a esta nueva forma de entender el surf.
In the early 60s a couple of cantabrian groups of people begun to practice surfing on their plankis in the El Sardinero beach waves. On one hand, swimers
from Youth Organization Frente de Juventudes (Jesus, Manel y Rafa Fiochi,
Jos Manuel Merodio y Carlos Beraza), and on the other hand divers from the
Submarine Investigation Center (CIS) such as Juan Giribet, Jos Manuel Gutirrez Mecolay Meco, Jos Mara Maruri Josechu, Manuel Martnez Lolis y
Antonio Sez Doc and others.
In 1963, Jesus Fiochi becomes the first spanish surfer at the time of surfing
a wave in the Sardinero on his Barland brought from Biarritz. In 1964, influenced by the Fiochis surfboard, Juan Giribet makes the first surfboard using
styrofoam core. That surfboard was used by his colleagues from the CIS. In
the meantime, Jose Manuel Merodio with the help of Carlos Beraza investigate
to create the first styrofoam, fibreglass and polyester surfboard in 1965. Once
that the existence of the Barland factory in France is known, most of surfers
abandon the planki and move to the new way of understanding Surf.

Roots in Ribamontn al Mar
De la mano del Surf Club Espaa (1967), el Surf Club Sardinero (1968) conoce,
en el verano del 69, por primera vez la playa de Somo, lo que extendi la posibilidad de coger olas durante todo el ao. Hasta entonces, algunos como Jos
Manuel Merodio, Carlos Beraza o Manel Fiochi cruzaban la baha a bordo de sus
tablas. Por su parte, miembros del CIS acostumbraban a acampar en Latas para
practicar la pesca submarina y el surf. Es precisamente la fundacin de estos
clubes la que iniciara el despegue del surf en Cantabria y, a partir de la cual, los
surfistas de Santander se haran asiduos de las olas de Ribamontn al Mar. Tan
asiduos que, gran parte de ellos, acabaron asentndose en el municipio.
En la Espaa de los 60 conseguir una tabla de surf resultaba muy complejo.

Sin embargo, Jos Manuel Merodio y Carlos Beraza utilizan la experiencia adquirida durante los ltimos aos en la fabricacin de tablas, para dar forma a
la primera marca: MB Surfboards (1968). Por su parte, en el CIS y el Surf Club
Sardinero empezaban a fabricar sus propias tablas aprovechando los despellejes de antiguos tablones. En 1973, se estableca en la cuadra de una casa
de Loredo (Casa Lola) el taller en el que empezaran a fabricarse a mayor
escala las primeras tablas de surf espaolas: Santa Marina (1973-74), Jernimo (1975-76) y Gernimo (1977). Muy cerca de all, en el barrio de Zueda, se
gestaran las Xpeedin (1978-84).
The Surf Club Sardinero (1968) helped by the Surf Club Espaa (1967), discovers
in the summer of 1969 the beach of Somo which allowed the possibility of surfing
all over the year. Until then some surfers like Jos Manuel Merodio, Carlos Beraza
and Manel Fiochi used to cross the bay on their surfboards. In addition, CIS members used to camp in Latas to practice dive-fishing and surf. The foundation of
those clubs started the take off of the surf in Cantabria and many surfers from
Santander enjoyed the waves of Ribamontan al Mar with great frequency at the
extent that many of them decided to live there.
Finding a surfboard in Spain in the 1960`s could be very complicated. But

Jos Manuel Merodio and Carlos Beraza used their experience in building
boards to create the first make: MB Surfboards (1968). Meanwhile, CIS and
Sardinero Surf Club built their own boards trough pieces from older boards.
In 1973 was born a workshop in an old stable Casa Lola beginning the
large scale production of the early surfboard Spanish labels: Santa Marina
(1973-74), Jernimo (1975-76) and Gernimo (1977). Very near, in Zueda,
was born Xpeedin (1978-84).

The surfing boom
A partir de los aos 80 el surf experimenta un boom y adquiere una gran visibilidad. La tradicin surfera de Ribamontn al Mar se encuentra plenamente
consolidada. Muchos de los pioneros fijarn aqu su residencia definitiva, al mismo tiempo que decenas de jvenes del municipio se introducen en el surf. Este
movimiento, fundamentalmente alrededor de las localidades de Somo y Loredo,
marcar para siempre el carcter de Ribamontn al Mar.
At the beginning the 1980s, the surfing scene booms and gets very visible.
The surfing tradition of Ribamontn al Mar appears fully consolidated. Many of
the pioneers set their home here, while dozens of local youngsters are introduced into the surf. This movement, focused in the villages of Somo and Loredo,
would mark forever the character of Ribamontn al Mar.

El surf es un deporte que exige una buena condicin fsica y un alto

grado de dedicacin. Las condiciones del mar determinan la dureza de
cada bao, ya que el surfista tiene que abrirse paso entre las corrientes
y la propia fuerza de las olas. Quienes lo practican todo el ao tienen
que luchar adems contra el fro, acortando la duracin de las sesiones
y utilizando trajes de neopreno.
En el surf de competicin se valoran tanto la pericia fsica del surfista como su habilidad para seleccionar y coger las olas ms grandes
y de mayor calidad. La organizacin de campeonatos ha sido una
constante en las playas de Ribamontn al Mar desde los mismos
comienzos de este deporte.
Surfing is a demanding sport that requires fitness and a high degree of

dedication. The toughness of each session is determined by the conditions of the sea, as the surfer has to wade through the currents and the
waves. Those who practice throughout the year must also fight the cold,
shortening the duration of the sessions and wearing full wetsuits.
In competition, surfers are awarded points on their technical skill, as
well as their wave selection and the ability to catch the biggest and best
formed waves. Competitions have been a constant on the beaches of
Ribamontn al Mar from the very beginning of the sport.

The social side of competition
Las competiciones de surf forman parte de la vida social del municipio; fechas
sealadas en las que deportistas de todas las procedencias acuden a las playas
de Somo y Loredo.
Es imprescindible destacar la labor realizada por Zalo Campa al frente del Xpeedin Surf Club y de la Federacin Cntabra de Surf, promoviendo campeonatos,
formando tcnicos y jueces, y apoyando, durante los aos 80 y 90, a numerosos
competidores. Pero sobre todo, su aportacin ms valiosa posiblemente ha sido la
de consolidar la zona como referencia del panorama surfero espaol.
Surf competitions are part of the towns social life, events where athletes from different places come to the beaches of Somo and Loredo.
Recognition must be given to Zalo Campa who, for several years, at the helm of the
Xpeedin Surf Club and the Cantabrian Surfing Federation, did a huge contribution by
promoting tournaments, training technicians and judges, and helping competitors
to develop their skills during the 80s and 90s. But possibly, above all, his most
valuable contribution has been helping to consolidate Ribamontn al Mar as a reference in the spanish surfing scenario.

El mismo afn de diversin que el Capitn Cook apreciaba en su primer contacto

con el surf en sus comienzos polinesios sigue presente entre los surfistas de hoy
en da. Por su sencillez e intensidad, deslizarse sobre las olas permite a miles de
personas disfrutar de sensaciones placenteras, en contacto con la naturaleza. En
las rompientes, el ritmo lo imponen las mareas, el viento y las marejadas. El xito
del surfista consiste en encontrarse con las olas ms adecuadas a sus gustos y
capacidad, en el lugar y el momento adecuado. La paciencia y un ritmo de vida
relajado y flexible, son caractersticos del estilo de vida surfero.
The same spirit of fun that Captain Cook appreciated in his first contact with surfing in Polinesian is still present today among surfers. For its simplicity and intensity, gliding over the waves provides pleasant sensations to thousands of people
who enjoy surfing in contact with nature. In the surf, tides, wind and storms impose their rhythm. For the surfer, success means finding the waves best suited to
their preference and ability, being in the right place at the right time. Patience,
relax and flexibility are characteristics of the surfer lifestyle.

El surf se ha consolidado en Ribamontn al Mar como un factor determinante por su impacto

en los sectores comercial y turstico, y tambin porque decenas de familias han decidido fijar
su residencia cerca de las olas.

El surf genera 3,5 millones de euros al ao en Ribamontn al Mar.
El surf origina 120 puestos de trabajo directos.
El 24% de los turistas llegan atrados por el surf => 13.000 turistas.
5.600 alumnos en las escuelas de surf en 2014 => Crece un 5% cada ao.
Viajeros internacionales de Ryanair a Santander => El 4% viajan con tablas de surf.
Escuelas de surf en Ribamontn al Mar => 5 escuelas (2009) y 14 escuelas (2014).
Surfing has become established in Ribamontn al Mar as a decisive factor due to its impact on
tourism and commercial sectors and also, because dozens of families have decided to take up
residence near the waves.

Hasta los aos 90, el surf cont con una discreta presencia femenina. El
municipio de Ribamontn al Mar fue testigo de los comienzos surferos
(1969-1970) de la que se convertira en una de las mujeres ms representativas para el deporte cntabro. Co-fundadora del taller y tienda Xpeedin,
Laura Revuelta est considerada como la primera surfera espaola.
Hoy en da, el nmero y nivel de practicantes femeninas se hace cada vez
ms relevante hasta el punto de que cuentan con sus propios clubes slo
chicas y eventos de gran renombre, como el festival Surferucas de Somo.
Before the 90s, surfing had very little feminine presence. Ribamontan al Mar
witnessed the beginning of Laura Revuelta as one of the most important
cantabrian sportwoman. Co-founder of Xpedding she is considered the first
spanish surferwoman.
Today, the number and level of women surfers is becoming more relevant
and in fact they have created only women clubes and big events such as
the well known Surferucas festival hold at Somo.

no sera posible la amplia oferta de actividades que ofrece el municipio.

Desde la edad ms temprana se puede encontrar iniciativas de formacin y educacin. La persona que nace en este municipio encuentra en la Escuela de Educacin Infantil Claudio del Ro
(25 aniversario) un lugar donde ponerse en contacto con un aprendizaje individualizado y emocional. Ms tarde, es en el Centro Escolar Nuestra Seora de Latas donde amplia dicho aprendizaje,
y en la Taller-Escuela de Cermica Municipal Barros donde complementa su inters creativo.
Education. Training and education activities are even offered for the young ones. Children
born in this municipality will find a personalised and emotional learning in the Kindergarten
called Claudio del Ro (25th aniversary). Later on, they will expand their learning in the Nuestra Seora de Latas School and complement their creativity at the Municipal Pottery Workshop/School called Barros.

Este 2016 es un ao muy especial para el grupo de teatro aficionado localizado en el municipio,
Uclito Teatro. Cumplen 25 aos desde su inicio, y es por eso que tienen la intencin de celebrarlo en el lugar que ms apasiona a un actor, sobre las tablas de un escenario. Durante los
prximos meses el Teatro Municipal de Ribamontn al Mar acoger a diferentes compaas y
grupos de teatro que participarn en los actos de conmemoracin (ver programacin en pginag 47). El Teatro Municipal de Ribamontn es la principal referencia cultural, que no nica, ya
que en las Aulas Culturales de cada pueblo tambin se realizan distintas actividades. El pblico
del municipio encuentra iniciativas acordes a sus gustos en las diversas disciplinas como son
el teatro, la msica y la danza e incluso la magia.

the intention of celebrating their anniversary in the place that most impassions an actor, that

al Mar will welcome different theatre companies and theatre groups that will participate in
the commemorative celebrations. The Municipal Theatre of Ribamontn is the main cultural
reference, but not the only one, given that a range of activities is carried out in the Cultural
Halls of each village. There is something for every audience in this municipality, from plays to
music and dance concerts, and even magic shows.

La concentracin de eventos deportivos de importancia nacional e incluso internacional, es
importante en este municipio. Las Instalaciones Deportivas de Baceuela y el Pabelln Polideportivo Municipal son dos espacios que a menudo albergan campeonatos y encuentros
de ftbol, futbito, Gimnasia Rtmica, Con esta misma filosofa de trabajo se va a afrontar la
organizacin de las actividades deportivas en la Piscina Municipal. La Bolera de Loredo, las

Centro de Surf
El Centro de Surf de Somo es uno de los grandes reclamos surferos de Ribamontn al Mar. Planteado como el primer centro receptor de Surf en Espaa, el
edificio se encuentra situado sobre el paseo martimo de la localidad, a escasos
metros de la arena.
The Somo Surfing Centre is one of the biggest surfing attractions in Ribamontn
al Mar. Intended to be the first reception centre for surfers in Spain, the building
can be found on Somos promenade, just a few metres away from the beach.
Diseado por los arquitectos Jacobo Gomis y Javier Romero, sus 450 metros
cuadrados de extensin ofrecen al visitante un completo repertorio de modernas instalaciones en las que el Surf encuentra un papel protagonista.
Designed by the architects Jacobo Gomis and Javier Romero with a surface of
450 m2, it offers the visitor a complete range of modern facilities with surfing
playing the key role.

Inaugurado en julio de 2012, el centro cuenta con amplias zonas comunes que
destacan por una gran funcionalidad, como los espacios dedicados a la recepcin y oficina de turismo o la sala multiusos, cuya superficie da cobijo a la
exposicin permanente sobre la Historia del Surf en Cantabria, muestra que
ha recibido, slo durante el primer ao, ms de 6.000 visitas.
Opened in July 2012, the centre has large and useful common areas, such as
tourist reception and office or the multipurpose room, which currently hosts
the permanent exhibition about the History of surfing in Cantabria, which has
received more than 6000 visitors during its first year.

El Centro de Surf de Somo est gestionado de forma compartida por el Ayuntamiento de Ribamontn al Mar
y la Federacin Cntabra de Surf, de acuerdo a un convenio municipal de colaboracin a travs del cual se
coordinan tanto instalaciones deportivas, como altas de socios.
El centro ejerce, asimismo, de delegacin federativa, con lo que la oferta de actividades es muy dinmica y
diversa. Son habituales los eventos formativos como la celebracin del Curso de Monitor de Surf (nivel 1 y 2)
o la programacin de charlas, conferencias, proyecciones y ruedas de prensa y presentaciones, actividades
que lo convierten en ncleo principal de acogida de los acontecimientos surferos de la zona.
HEADQUARTERS OF THE FEDERATION
The Somo Surfing Centre is currently managed by the City Council of Ribamontn al Mar and the Cantabrian
Surfing Federation, according to a local cooperation agreement to coordinate sport facilities and members
admissions.
Additionally, the centre works as delegation of the federation, in order to offer a dynamic and varied programme of activities. Commonplaces are the training events, like the surfing instructor course (level 1 and
2) or a schedule of talks, speeches, screenings and press conferences and presentations. These activities
make the centre the main focal point for local surfing events.
INSCRIPCIONES Y HORARIO
El Centro de Surf se encuentra abierto todo el ao de 8 de la maana a 10 de la noche para el uso de socios,
horario durante el cual estar permitida la utilizacin de las instalaciones del mdulo norte zona social con
vestuarios, duchas y almacn de tablas a las que los usuarios registrados podrn acceder libremente a travs
de un moderno y sofisticado sistema de control de acceso automatizado.
El centro, asimismo, dispondr un horario de atencin al pblico de lunes a viernes, de 16 a 20 horas, y
sbados, de 10 a 14 horas, ampliable durante los meses de verano, para posibilitar tanto las altas sociales
como federativas.
El proyecto de desarrollo del Centro de Surf de Somo est enmarcado dentro de las ejecuciones del Plan de
Competitividad del Producto Surf que comparten Ministerio de Industria, Energa y Turismo; Consejera de Innovacin, Industria, Turismo y Comercio del Gobierno de Cantabria; y el propio Ayuntamiento de Ribamontn al
Mar. La construccin de su flamante skatepark o la aplicacin de estrategias de promocin y comercializacin
turstica son algunas de las herramientas recogidas dentro del planteamiento de esta pionera planificacin
estratgica que tiene como objetivo convertir la zona en un competitivo modelo de destino surfero.
REGISTRATION AND TIMETABLE
The Surfing Centre is open for members throughout the whole year from 8am to 10pm, time during which the
using of the north module (changing rooms, showers and surfboard storage room) is allowed for registered
members, who have free access through a modern, sophisticated and automated access control system.
In addition, the centre has scheduled customer service opening hours (Monday to Friday, from 4pm to 8pm
and Saturdays, from 10am to 2pm), which will be extended during the summer season to enable the membership of people and federations.
The development project of the Somo Surfing Centre is outlined within the Competitiveness Agenda of the
Product Surfing, which is shared by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, the Regional Council of
Innovation, Industry, Tourism and Commerce of Cantabria and the City Council of Ribamontn al Mar. The
construction of its splendid skatepark or the application of promotional and tourist focused marketing strategies are some of the ideas contained in the strategic planning of this innovative proposal; in which the end
goal is to make the municipality a national model for the development of a surfing destination.

El skatepark de Somo es otro de los grandes proyectos del Ayuntamiento de

Ribamontn al Mar y su plan de competitividad turstica.
The Somo skatepark is another big project of the City Council of Ribamontn al
Mar and its tourism competitiveness agenda.
Diseada y construida por la empresa Zut Skateparks, la pista consta de una

superficie aproximada de 600 metros cuadrados en la que, de forma dinmica
y precisa, se alternan recorridos de patinaje de carving y street, mezclando lneas y dotando al parque de obstculos y formas verstiles aptas para skaters
principiantes o para satisfacer a los ms exigentes y expertos.
Designed and built by the Zut Skateparks Company, the rink has an approximately 600 m2 surface, where carving runs and street-skating runs alternate dynamically and precisely. The park is equipped with versatile obstacles, which are
suitable both for beginners and for the most demanding skaters.
El mdulo principal del skatepark ofrece un bowl o piscina de 1,20 metros de altura con una extensin de 1,60 metros. Mltiples transfers o cambios de baera
lo conectan con el resto del parque que cuenta, tambin, con un pequeo miniramp que hace las delicias de los ms pequeos y de los patinadores menos
avanzados. La parte ms creativa la conforma el quarter oververt diseado en
forma de ola, el cual le otorga al parque el toque perfecto para su integracin
en un municipio, el de Ribamontn al Mar, con una marcada tradicin surfera.
The skateparks main module provides a bowl with a height of 1.20 metres and
an extension of 1.60 metres. Numerous transfers connect it with the rest of the
park, which also has a small mini ramp to delight children and less experienced
skaters. The most creative part is an over vert quarter, wave-shaped designed,
which provides the park with the perfect touch for its integration in the municipality, Ribamontn al Mar, that has a strong surfing tradition.
Adems de un magnfico punto de encuentro y ocio para la comunidad surfera,

desde su inauguracin en 2011, el skatepark de Somo se ha convertido en lugar
de referencia nacional dentro de la escena skater.
Besides being a great meeting point and place of entertainment for the surfing
community, the Somo skatepark has become a national example within the skater scene from its opening in 2011.
Uno de los momentos ms esperados de la temporada llega con la celebracin del

exitoso campeonato de skate organizado por Life Skatepark en la instalacin y que,
todos los aos, atrae a patinadores de todas las edades procedentes de todo el pas.
One of the most anticipated moments of the season is the celebration of the successful skating championship, organised by Life Skatepark. Every year, this event
attracts skaters of all ages, from across the whole country.

Soy Terapeuta Ocupacional, trabajo con nios con necesidades especiales y soy una apasionada del surf.
Siempre me gust la idea de poder aprovechar el medio
mar y playa como herramienta de trabajo con nios
y en Alemania nunca me fue posible. Cuando llegu a
Espaa, vi que poda hacer realidad mi sueo e inici un
proyecto piloto en 2010.
I am an occupational therapist working alongside children

with special needs and I am passionate about surf. I have
always loved the idea of being able to make the most of the
sea and beach environment as a work tool with the children and, unfortunately, in Germany this was never possible. Upon my arrival to Spain, I realised I could make my
dream come true and began a pilot project in 2010.

Qu misin tiene la Asociacin?

El objetivo principal de la Asociacin es potenciar el desarrollo integral de los nios de forma
ldica, fomentando las capacidades sensomotoras, psicomotoras, sociales y emocionales. A
su vez, quiere ofrecer una actividad de ocio a nios con necesidades especiales, que suelen
verse excluidos en otras muchas actividades.
En el periodo de vacaciones de verano realizamos cursos en los que facilitamos a los nios
disfrutar del mar y de la playa en grupos pequeos (5 nios), con un monitor o monitora por
nio, lo que permite respetar siempre el ritmo de cada uno.
What is the Associations mission?

The main objective of the Association is to improve the integral development of the children in a
fun way, strengthening their sensorimotor, psychomotor, social and emotional performance. At
the same time, it aims to offer a leisure activity to children with special needs who are usually
excluded from many other activities.
During the summer holidays, we do small-group courses (5 children) where children can enjoy
the sea and the beach with one instructor per child. This allows each child to progress at his/
her own rhythm.
En qu ayuda el medio Mar y Playa a estos nios?

El ambiente mar y playa ofrece muchas sensaciones que enriquecen el desarrollo del nio. La
compaa de un monitor ofrece a los nios un espacio seguro en el que pueden moverse, caerse y
experimentar sin hacerse dao. La flotabilidad del agua permite movimientos que fuera del agua
no son posibles y la energa de las olas aumenta an ms las sensaciones sobre el propio cuerpo.
Es un espacio pblico al que luego pueden acudir las familias con sus hijos y pueden disfrutar de
lo que van conociendo y observando de las clases.
How does the Sea and Beach environment help these children?
The sea and beach environment offers many sensations that contribute towards the childs development. The company of an instructor offers a secure space where they can move, fall and
experiment without hurting themselves. The floatability of water allows the child to perform manoeuvres that would not be possible out of the water. The energy of the waves emphasizes the
sensations on their bodies even more. It is a public space that families can come back to with their
children and enjoy what they are learning and seeing in the classes.
Por qu el surf como terapia?

Tanto los movimientos en el agua y en la playa, como el propio movimiento en la tabla, ofrecen
estmulos que potencian la consciencia del propio cuerpo. El surf permite que el nio pueda
experimentar nuevas sensaciones practicando un deporte, lo que ya de por s aumenta su autoconsciencia, y, adems, la propia actividad facilita a muchos nios con dificultades en las
relaciones poder conectar mejor con su ambiente, relacionarse con la persona de referencia
(monitor) y con su grupo. Los movimientos, las sensaciones y la libertad que sienten dentro del
agua crean un bienestar y alegra muy especiales.
Nosotros enfocamos las clases tanto en el trabajo de la autonoma, como en un trabajo grupal,
y en una experiencia de uno a uno entre nio y monitor.
Why use surf as a therapy?

Movements in the water and on the beach, and the actual movement on the board offer stimuli that
raise consciousness of ones own body. Surf allows the child to experience new sensations practising a sport, which already increases their self-awareness as it is. The activity itself also facilities
many children with interaction problems to connect better with their environment, to relate with the
person of reference (the instructor, in this case) and with their group. The movements, sensations
and the freedom they feel in the water create a special sensation of wellbeing and happiness.
Our classes are focused on working on their autonomy as well as group work, and in a one-to-one
experience between the child and the instructor.

ENTRE EL MAR Y LA MIES

Uno de los mayores tesoros de Ribamontn al Mar es su entorno natural.
La gran diversidad geogrfica demarca una zona de extraordinario atractivo
paisajstico, con pequeos montes, caminos vecinales y senderos que desembocan en grandes praderas, arboledas y playas, que brindan la posibilidad de agradables paseos y permiten disfrutar de excelentes recorridos por
un magnfico medio natural. En contacto directo con este medio se pueden
realizar una serie de rutas ecolgicas especialmente diseadas para conocer la flora y la fauna del lugar y para realizar visitas a las zonas ms singulares de cada uno de los pueblos. El acondicionamiento de pistas agrcolas
para paseos a pie, en bici y a caballo y la mejora de casas rurales potencian
un turismo que vive ms plenamente la naturaleza.

BETWEEN THE SEA AND THE FIELDS

One of the greatest treasures of Ribamontn al Mar is its natural environment. This area is set apart by the great geographical diversity of extraordinary landscape beauty, with small forests, country roads and paths that flow
into large meadowland, groves and beaches, providing the opportunity to go
for pleasant walks, allowing one to enjoy breathtaking natural environments
while travelling along amazing routes.
In direct contact with this environment, a series of nature trails can be trekked,
especially designed for getting to know the flora and fauna of the place and for
visiting the most unique places of each town. The conditioning of agricultural
trails for hiking, bicycle riding or horseback riding, and the refurbishment of
rural houses promote tourism in this area with nature at its fullest.
Ruta 1: El Monte de Arna

Salida y llegada: Somo. C/ Travesa de Arna.
La ruta se desarrolla bordeando el monte de
Arna. Caminando sobre dunas y paralelamente
al mar, disfrutarn de una maravillosa vista de
las playas de Somo y Loredo. Este espacio careci de arbolado hasta que el Rey Alfonso XIII
lo mand repoblar con pino martimo, con el fin
de embellecer la vista desde Santander. Actualmente, tambin crecen acebos, encinas, laureles, jaras, espinos

ROUTE 1: MOUNT OF ARNA

Departure and arrival: Somo c/ Travesia de Arna.
The route is laid out flanking the monte de Arna.
Walking on dunes and bordering the sea, you will
enjoy a marvellous view of the beaches of Somo
and Loredo. This area lacked woodland until King
Alfonso XIII decreed that it should be repopulated
with maritime pine, in order to embellish the view
from Santander. Currently, there are also holly
trees, holm oaks, laurels, rockroses, hawthorn

Salida: Aparcamiento de la Playa de Loredo.
Llegada: Playa de Galizano.
Esta ruta nos ofrece un hermoso recorrido de
acantilados y playas. Sin perder de vista en
ningn momento el mar, podremos ir visitando
casi la totalidad de las playas del municipio.
Comenzando en la playa de Loredo, se ha de
continuar por la playa de Los Tranquilos, las de
Langre, la pequea cala de Arenillas y finalizar
en La Canal de Galizano.

ROUTE 2: THE CLIFFS

Departure: parking lot of the Loredo beach.
Arrival: Galizano beach.
This route offers a beautiful journey amongst the
cliffs and beaches. Without ever losing sight of
the sea, we can visit almost all the beaches of
the municipality. Beginning at Loredo beach, we
continue through the Los Tranquilos beach, the
beaches of Langre, the small cove of Arenillas
and finishing at La Canal de Galizano.

Ruta 3: El Ribero y las

Praderas
Salida: C/ El Ribero, en Somo.
Llegada: Iglesia de Castanedo.
La ruta comienza en el alto de Somo, mostrndonos una
bella panormica de la desembocadura del ro Miera en
la baha de Santander. Contina por caminos rurales
hasta llegar al pueblo de Castanedo. Dejando a su paso
el Convento de Las Trinitarias, de mediados del s. XIX,
la pequea Ermita de Tes, de Suesa y la Iglesia de San
Salvador, de Castanedo.
ROUTE 3: EL RIBERO AND THE MEADOWLAND
Departure: C/ El Ribero in Somo.
Arrival: Church of Castanedo.
The route begins on the hill of Somo, which gives us a beautiful
viewing point of the mouth of the Miera River into the bay of Santander. It continues along rural roads until reaching the town of
Castanedo. It passes the Convent of Las Trinitarias on the way, from
the middle of the 19th century, the small shrine of Tes of Suesa, and
the Church of San Salvador of Castanedo.

Llegada: Ermita de Santa Polonia en Loredo.
Esta ruta nos brinda un agradable paseo entre cultivos de trbol, ballico y maz, muestra de la an importante actividad ganadera que preserva el municipio. El trayecto finaliza frente a la pequea ermita
de Santa Polonia del s. XVII, que conserva pinturas
murales en su interior.

Arrival: Shrine of Santa Polonia in Loredo.
This route offers a pleasant walk among crops of
cloverleaf, rye grass and corn, which is a sample of
the importance that cattle farming still has within the
municipality. The journey ends in front of the small
shrine of Santa Polonia of the 17th century, which still
has mural paintings inside the same.

La ruta comienza frente a la Ermita de San Antonio. Hay que
ascender al monte Calobro, a la sombra de las plantaciones de
eucaliptos, para poder disfrutar de una de las mejores panormicas que el municipio ofrece de la baha de Santander y su
entorno. A lo largo de este recorrido encontraremos robledales
en buen estado de conservacin.

ROUTE 5: EL TIRADO AND CALOBRO

Departure: Shrine of San Antonio in Carriazo.
Arrival: El Tirado.
The route begins in front of the Shrine of San Antonio. One must
climb the mount Calobro, amidst the abundant eucalyptus plantations, in order to enjoy one of the best panoramic views that the
municipality offers of the bay of Santander and its surroundings.
All along this journey it is possible to see well preserved oak woods.
Ruta 6: Carril Bici

Salida: Rotonda de Somo.
Llegada: Rotonda de Galizano.
La ruta se desarrolla por el carril-bici, que discurre de forma paralela a la carretera regional. La suavidad del recorrido es ideal para
nios. Caminando, en bici o en patines, este recorrido resulta una
agradable forma de disfrutar del paisaje rural del municipio.

Departure: Roundabout of Somo.
Arrival: Roundabout of Galizano.
The route is laid out along a bike lane, which runs parallel to the
regional highway. Given the ease of travel along this route makes
it ideal for children. Walking, on bikes or on skates, this journey is
a pleasant way of enjoying the rural landscape of the municipality.
Ruta 7: Cucabrera
Salida y llegada: Carretera Playa de Galizano.
La ruta comienza bordeando la playa de La Canal hasta la cueva de Cucabrera, para llegar entre eucaliptos a la Ermita de San
Pantalen. A lo largo del recorrido encontraremos numerosos
senderos que nos conducen a los mejores pescaderos de lubinas, jargos y percebes de la zona. El Alto de San Pantalen es
uno de los mejores lugares para contemplar Santander.
ROUTE 7: CUCABRERA
Departure and arrival: Highway of the Galizano Beach.
The route begins flanking the La Canal beach until reaching
the cave of Cucabrera, arriving at the Shrine of San Pantalen
amongst eucalyptus trees. All along the journey it is possible to
see numerous trails that lead to the best fishing areas for sea
bass, jargos and barnacles. The Hill of San Pantalen is one of
the best places to admire Santander.

POR LOS ACANTILADOS DE LOREDO, LANGRE Y GALIZANO
A lo largo de una senda costera que bordea los acantilados de Loredo, Langre y Galizano, los amantes
de la BTT y del running pueden disfrutar de una ruta suave que recorre, sin perder de vista en ningn
momento el mar, muchas de las playas del municipio de Ribamontn al Mar y que destaca por su
enorme belleza y sus vistas a la baha de Santander.
Comenzando en la playa de Loredo, se ha de continuar por la playa de Los Tranquilos y atravesando
verdes praderas llegaremos a lo alto de los acantilados, donde el mar, que rompe a sus pies, forma
piscinas naturales que invitan a bajar a darse un bao y desde donde se puede contemplar la isla de
Santa Marina. Pronto llegamos a la magnfica playa de Langre, una playa con forma de media luna
rodeada de acantilados de 20 metros de altura. Avanzamos hasta la pequea cala de Arenillas y La
Canal de Galizano, en la que una pasarela de madera que se adentra por la ra nos muestra la belleza
de la playa. En el ltimo tramo de la ruta cruzaremos varias zonas de eucaliptos y pasaremos cerca
de las ruinas de la ermita de San Pantalen.
Esta senda costera es una hermosa ruta para admirar toda la belleza del paisaje del municipio y de
los acantilados baados por el bravo mar Cantbrico.
BIKE TOUR ALONG THE CLIFFS OF LOREDO, LANGRE AND GALIZANO

Along a coastal path that borders the cliffs of Loredo, Langre and Galizano, is an easy route for
MTB and running lovers to enjoy, which goes over many of the beaches of the municipality of Ribamontn al Mar always overlooking the sea - and stands out for its incredible beauty and its view
of the bay of Santander.
The route starts from the beach of Loredo and continues towards the beach of Los Tranquilos. It
crosses green meadows to reach the cliffs top, where one can contemplate the sea breaking at their
foot and the amazing view of the island of Santa Marina. Later we arrive at the gorgeous beach of
Langre, a crescent-shaped beach surrounded by 20-metre-high cliffs. The path moves forward until
the small cove of Las Arenillas and La Canal of Galizano, where a wooden walkway enters into the sea
inlet and shows the beauty of this beach. Along its final stretch, the route crosses several eucalyptus
zones and passes by the ruins of the hermitage of San Pantalen.
This coastal path is a beautiful route to contemplate the breathtaking landscape of the municipality
and the cliffs bathed by the wild Cantabrian Sea.

La PRIMERA RESERVA DE SURF DE ESPAA ya es una realidad. A comienzos de

2012, y a propuesta de la Federacin Cntabra de Surf, se declar oficialmente
la Reserva de surf de Ribamontn al Mar, por la que se reconoce el carcter
excepcional de las rompientes litorales de nuestro municipio y su singular valor
como patrimonio y recurso natural, deportivo, socioeconmico y cultural.
SPAINS FIRST SURFING RESERVE is now a reality. At the beginning of 2012,

at the proposal of the Cantabrian Surfing Federation, the Ribamontn al Mar
coastline was officially declared a Surfing Reserve, thus recognising the exceptional nature of the surf breaks in our municipality and their unique value
as a natural, sporting, socio-economic and cultural resource.
La Reserva de Surf abarca toda la zona de rompientes de inters para el surf

entre las localidades de Somo-Loredo-Langre y Galizano, destacando especialmente la rompiente de grandes olas de la Isla de Santa Marina. Este santuario natural del surf cuenta con una gran variedad y calidad de olas, desde
grandes olas de nivel experto, a olas de playa fciles y seguras, adecuadas
para la enseanza del surf. Adems de sus valores naturales, debemos considerar toda una marejada de valores aadidos. Es un lugar de referencia en

salvaguarda de los valores naturales y la calidad ambiental de dichas rompientes litorales y su entorno costero. Su reconocimiento pblico pretende garantizar el uso y disfrute de la prctica del surf para las generaciones futuras.
The declaration of the Surfing Reserves status involves a range of activities

being carried out which are necessary to enhance, publicise and safeguard
the natural values and the environmental quality of these surf breaks and their
coastal environment. This public recognition aims to guarantee that future generations will be able to enjoy the practice of surfing.

Introduccin
Introductin
Fue el cntabro Jess Fiochi el que trajo a Espaa la primera tabla de Surf
de la que se tiene constancia. Sucedi en el ao 1964 y por encargo. Cuentan que la tabla lleg a la regin sobre el autobs del Racing de Santander
-el equipo de ftbol local, que vena de jugar un partido-, y que su precio
fue de 5.000 pesetas.
The first known surfboard in Spain was brought by the Cantabrian, Jess
Fiochi. It happened in 1964 and it was custom-designed. It is said that the
board arrived to the region on the bus of Racing de Santander -the local
soccer team, which was returning from a match, and that it cost 5,000 pesetas (about 30 euros).
Pocos aos ms tarde, Ribamontn al Mar se convirti en el epicentro de

este deporte. A principios de los 70, un grupo de amigos puso en marcha
en la famosa Casa Lola la primera experiencia en produccin artesanal de
tablas con la firma Santa Marina, el mismo nombre que la isla que procura
la mayor ola cabalgable en el municipio.
A few years later, Ribamontn al Mar became the epicentre for this sport.
At the beginning of the 70s, a group of friends started up the famous Casa
Lola, a first-time experience in the production of handmade boards, under
the brand name of Santa Marina, the same name as the island where the
largest waves for surfing in the municipality are found.

Desde ese momento hasta hoy, el surfing ha evolucionado mucho y sus

adeptos se han multiplicado exponencialmente en Espaa. Ms que un deporte, es un fenmeno imparable que tiene en Ribamontn al Mar su cuna
y su refugio.
From that time until now, surfing has evolved a great deal and its followers have multiplied exponentially in Spain. More than a sport, it is an
unstoppable phenomenon, which has found in Ribamontn al Mar its birthplace and haven.
El oleaje del mar Cantbrico convierte esta zona en un lugar privilegiado

para practicar todo tipo de deportes nuticos, especialmente el Surf. Todas
las playas del municipio tienen unas caractersticas adecuadas para realizar esta actividad deportiva, al estar orientadas al Norte y muy abiertas al
mar, lo que posibilita que las olas entren con frecuencia. Por ello, no hay
un momento concreto para hacer surfing aqu: la variedad es tal que el
deporte es viable todo el ao.
The waves of the Cantabrian Sea make this a privileged place in which to
practice all kinds of water sports, especially surfing. All the beaches of the
municipality are adequate for this type of sport activity, given that they face
northward and are wide open to the sea, thus enabling larger and more frequent swells. For this reason, there is not a specific surfing season here:
the variety is such that the sport is feasible all year round.
Adems, el municipio de Ribamontn al Mar ha puesto en marcha un Plan

de Competitividad Turstica centrado en el surfing, con lo que las posibilidades de practicar este deporte y realizar otras actividades paralelas se
multiplican. Dentro de este plan, se incluye la puesta en marcha del Centro
de Surf de Somo y su skate park, adems de la organizacin de multitud
de actividades y eventos para fomentar el aprendizaje y la prctica del Surf
entre personas de todas las edades.
Furthermore, the municipality of Ribamontn al Mar has started up a Tourist Competitiveness Plan focused on surfing, which multiplies the possibilities of practising this sport and other similar activities. Included within this
plan is the start-up of the Surf Centre in Somo and the skate park, besides
the organisation of numerous activities and events to promote the learning
and practice of Surfing among people of all ages.

La playa de Somo cuenta con 4.000 metros de fina arena desde el Puntal hasta Loredo. Su entorno mezcla la zona urbana del pueblo con dunas, pinares y
zonas verdes. El ambiente es surfero y tablonero por excelencia.
Se accede continuando hasta el final de la playa de Somo o siguiendo la carretera comarcal SP-4141 desde la recta de Galizano, a las afueras del pueblo de
Somo. Ambiente veraniego muy tranquilo.
Somo beach is a 4 km of Golden sand that stretches from El Puntal up to the

village of Loredo. The beach is flanked by urban areas, sand dunes and pine forest. The vibe is very munch surf orientated. The beach always offers a variety
of quality peaks to choose from.
Further up Somo beach or following the SP-4141 past Somo is the village of
Loredo. This charming village has a growing surf scene, and is a lot quieter
than Somo. Right next door to Somo it offers a great escape from the summer
madness for all those who are seeking a quiet retreat. The vibe in the water is
much more learner orientated.

SANTA MARINA (La Isla)

LANGRE: Las playas de Langre se abren al Cantbrico con una extensin de
800 y 1000 metros respectivamente, ubicadas bajo acantilados y pastizales nos encontramos un excelente ambiente playero en verano.
Langre is a truly beautiful beach. Surfing takes place on the 1000 meter
main beach surrounded by spectacular cliffs and grazing grounds. This
wave is a favourite for long-boarders and always has a strong international
presence in the water.

Easterlies, but cliffs offer good protection from NW when Somo and Loredo are
onshore.

El surf en un deporte apto para cualquiera con una forma fsica y aptitudes normales, pero no es fcil aprender y, sobre todo,
se desarrolla en un entorno, las rompientes marinas, que puede resultar peligroso. Por ambos motivos recomendamos que la
iniciacin se lleve a cabo a travs de algunas de las escuelas de surf que existen en las principales playas. All se pueden adquirir los conocimientos bsicos para disfrutar del surf sin ponerse en peligro y sin molestar o hacer dao a terceras personas.
En las principales entradas a las playas se han instalado paneles con las normas bsicas de convivencia para los surfistas:
Cdigo del surf. Esta iniciativa, muy bien acogida entre surfistas locales y los turistas surferos, ha supuesto una mejora en
seguridad en beneficio de todos.
Surfing is a sport that can be learnt by anyone, providing they are reasonably fit. But it is not an easy sport to pick up, and the environment it takes place in is, to some degree, dangerous. After all you need waves and where the waves are so are the rips. For this
very reason we recommend that anyone who is considering taking up this sport should make use of one of the excellent surf schools
available in the area. They will teach you those vital skills requiered to be safe in the wter, both to yourselves and to others.
Boards with information about the surf code were installed on the main accesses to the beaches of the municipality. The boards
show a basic code of conduct for surfers in the water. This initiative has been warmly welcomed by local surfers and surfing tourists
as it is an improvement on safety to everyones benefit.

This system is already being effectively used at the beaches of France, USA and Australia. It comprises of the mobile installation of blue flags to define SAFE AREAS FOR SWIMMERS in order to ensure their safety.

IDENTIFICAR UNA CORRIENTE. Desde la orilla se observa que en ese lugar no rompen
las olas y la superficie del agua est picada con pequeas crestas y aspecto rugoso.
La tonalidad es ms oscura ya que la profundidad es mayor.
ANTES DE ENTRAR AL AGUA. Asegrate de identificar las corrientes de esa zona (pregunta a los socorristas o a los surfistas locales) y, si hay alguna corriente, aljate.

CUIDADO!. Muchas veces, el lugar donde no rompen las olas parece el ms seguro
para nadar, cuando realmente es el ms peligroso y donde est la corriente.
PUNTO DE REFERENCIA. Cuando ests remando, tienes que saber dnde ests ubicado dentro del agua. Antes de entrar en el agua encuentra un punto de referencia
alineado con la costa (casas, rocas, sombrillas o un grupo de gente) para saber en
qu lugar del agua te encuentras. Controla siempre tu punto de referencia por si una
corriente te arrastra. Si te alejas demasiado de tu referencia, vete a la orilla y vuelve
andando por la playa hasta el punto donde estabas al principio.
CMO SE FORMAN LAS CORRIENTES. Cuando las olas rompen, se convierten en espumas
que avanzan hacia la orilla y producen un desplazamiento masivo de agua. Todo este agua
no puede acumularse en la orilla, as que busca una salida, desplazndose hacia los lados
y volviendo hacia atrs, generndose de esta manera las corrientes de salida de agua.
SI ESTS ACOSTUMBRADO A REMAR. Hazlo paralelo a la costa a travs de la corriente.
As volvers de nuevo a las olas que rompen y ellas te ayudarn a volver a la costa.
SI ERES PRINCIPIANTE. Intenta flotar para ahorrar energa. Levanta la mano parallamar la atencin de un socorrista, surfista o alguien de la orilla. Si no hay nadiealrededor, rema paralelamente a la costa para llegar a las olas que rompen. Si la corriente
es muy fuerte, flota hasta que se disperse y mantn tu brazo alzado pidiendo ayuda.
Cuando la corriente se disperse, rema hacia las espumas paralelo a la playa, coge una
espuma y sal a la orilla.
CONSEJOS:
Nunca nadar contra corriente, lo mejor es nadar en paralelo a la playa. Las corrientes
suelen ser estrechas, as que es probable que nadando unos metros se pueda salir de
su arrastre.
Mantener la calma y no dejarse llevar por el pnico. El peligro real es intentar nadar
contra la corriente, que causa un rpido agotamiento.
Ante el cansancio, es mejor intentar flotar y recuperar el aliento para poder nadar
hacia donde rompen las olas que pueden empujarte hacia la playa.
No esperes a estar agotado, si ests en apuros levanta las manos y pide ayuda.
Seguridad
No debe practicarse el surf en solitario. Los compaeros de bao deben vigilarse mutuamente.
Infrmate siempre de las predicciones meteorolgicas y las mareas.
En condiciones de marejada o fuertes corrientes, ten previstas varias salidas alternativas desde
las que llegar seguro a tierra.
Si eres principiante, consulta y respeta a los surfistas locales.
No iniciarse en solitario y evita los picos ms concurridos.
Es recomendable encontrarse en posesin de una licencia federativa.
HOW TO IDENTIFY A CURRENT. Waves dont break in this area and the water surface
looks choppy and rough with small crests. It looks darker because it is deeper.
BEFORE ENTERING THE WATER. Identify the currents of the area and stay away from
them.
BE CAREFUL!. Waves dont break in areas where there is a current, so it often looks like
a safe place to swim.
REFERENCE POINT. Find a reference point lined up with the coastline before entering
the water and dont take your eye off it. If you move too far from your reference point,
swim back to the seashore and walk back to your starting point.
HOW CURRENTS FORM: When waves break, they turn into a foam that moves towards
the seashore and produce a huge water displacement. All this water moves from side
to side and backwards, which is what creates water currents.
IF YOU ARE USED TO ROW. Do it through the current and parallel to the coastline, this
way the currents will help you to go back to the area where waves break.
IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER. Try to float to save energy. Raise your hand to draw the attention of someone at the seashore. If there is nobody, row parallel to the coastline to
reach the area where the waves break. In the case of strong currents, float until it calms
down. Then row parallel to the beach, ride the foam and get out of the water.
ADVICES/RECOMMENDATIONS:
Do not swim against the current but parallel to the beach. Currents are usually narrow,
so if you swim for a few meters, you will probably stop feeling its drag.
Keep calm and do not panic. Do not swim against the current, it will exhaust you faster.
If you are tired, float and catch your breath so as to swim towards the area where
waves break.
Do not wait until you are exhausted, raise your hand and ask for help.

One should never surf in their own. A group of surfers will always keep an eye out for each other.
Make sure you have checked the surf forecast and that you know what the tide is doing.
When the surf gets big, always have several exit routes back to the beach well figured out.
If you are a beginner ask local surfers where to go surf. Respect their opinin because if anyone
knows the beach, its rips and the waves, its them. Never go in on your own when learning and avoid
very busy peaks.
Always ask local sor lifeguards in the rea what the dangers of the beach you are about to surf are.
Again respect their opinin.
Its recommended that you be affiliated to your national or regional surf governing body.

Durante el mes de julio se celebra el campamento de surf destinado a nios de 6 a 13 aos. Pequesurf
incluye cursos intensivos de iniciacin al surf, talleres de educacin medioambiental, actividades
artsticas y juegos didcticos. Todo organizado en grupos reducidos y bajo la supervisin de monitores
titulados por la Federacin Cntabra de Surf.
During the month of July a surfing camp takes place for children between 6 and 14 years old. Pequesurf
includes intensive surfing courses for beginners, environmental education workshops, artistic activities and
educational games. All these activities are organised in small groups and under the supervision of qualified
instructors of the Cantabrian Surfing Federation.
Ribamontn al Mar es el lugar ideal para realizar multitud de actividades deportivas en familia. Adems del surf,
hay infinidad de posibilidades, como el senderismo o la realizacin de rutas en bici. La aficin a este deporte
est muy extendida en Ribamontn al Mar, que le rinde culto en el mes de junio con El Da de la Bicicleta. Las
pruebas deportivas que se celebran a lo largo del verano son tambin una buena actividad en la que participar
o simplemente acudir como espectador, introduciendo a los ms pequeos en las sensaciones que transmiten
diferentes deportes como los bolos tradicionales, el triatln, la vela o las piragas.
Ribamontn al Mar is the perfect place to enjoy numerous sporting activities with the family. Besides surfing,
there are countless other options, like hiking or bike routes. This municipality is very enthusiastic about cycling
and celebrates in July the Day of the bicycle. There are sporting events, celebrated during the summer, that
are great to take part in or just attend as an observer. Smaller children can be introduced to different sports like
traditional bowling, triathlon or to a canoe regatta.
Una de las actividades ms famosas de Ribamontn al Mar es el Derby de Loredo que este ao cumple su 60
aniversario y se celebra todos los veranos en la playa, cuando la marea est baja. Esta competicin hpica es
la ms antigua e importante del norte de Espaa. Cada ao genera una gran expectacin y atrae a miles de
espectadores. Se trata de una actividad que llamar la atencin de los nios, por su espectacularidad. Quince das antes del derby se celebra una concentracin equina con comida campestre y verbena nocturna.
One of the most popular activities in Ribamontn al Mar is the Loredo Derby, which is celebrating its 60th
anniversary this year. It is held each summer on the beach when the tide is low. This equestrian competition
is the oldest and most important in the north of Spain and generates huge excitement each year and attracts
thousands of visitors. This is a spectacular activity perfect for children. Fifteen days before the Derby is held
an equine meeting with country food and a night open-air festival.
El periodo estival est plagado de fiestas populares en el municipio y todas ellas incluyen en su programacin juegos infantiles, comidas campestres y romera. Las fiestas patronales que se celebran en verano
son El Carmen (16 de julio), San Pantalen (27 de julio), San Flix (1 de agosto), El Salvador (6 de agosto),
Nuestra Seora (15 de agosto), San Roque (16 de agosto) y Nuestra Seora de Latas (8 de septiembre).
During the summer season the municipality is full of popular festivals, including childrens games, country
meals and local festivities called romeras. The local patron saints festivals celebrated in summer are El
Carmen (16th July), San Pantalen (27th July), San Flix (1st August), El Salvador (6th August), Nuestra
Seora (15th August), San Roque (16th August) and Nuestra Seora de Latas (8th September).
Pasear por alguna de las siete rutas creadas para conocer los pueblos de Ribamontn al Mar es una
excelente opcin para los das menos calurosos. Los nios disfrutarn de un paseo por los prados y del
contacto con las especies vegetales y animales. Una serie de fotografas o un dibujo sern el recuerdo
perfecto de esta excursin en familia.
Taking a walk along one of the seven routes created to get to know the villages of Ribamontn al Mar
is an excellent option for less warm days. Children will be able to enjoy a walk along the meadows
and explore the plant and animal species. Some pictures or a drawing will be a perfect souvenir of
this day out with the family.
El cine de verano puede ser el complemento perfecto a un da de excursin. A partir del mes de julio,
comienzan las proyecciones al aire libre en la bolera de El Cagigal de Loredo, como complemento de un
amplio programa de actividades culturales, de ocio y tiempo libre. Se celebran todos los jueves de julio
y agosto, en sesiones programadas a las 22:00 horas, con una seleccin de pelculas especialmente
enfocada a pblico infantil y juvenil.
Como no poda ser de otra manera, pasar un da de

playa es una de las actividades imprescindibles que
realizar con nios. El municipio cuenta con playas
que pueden escogerse dependiendo del tipo de experiencia que quiera encontrarse. Las hay ms tranquilas o algo ms animadas. En cualquier caso, baarse, jugar con la arena, hacer un picnic o volar una
cometa son experiencias que los nios disfrutarn en
cualquiera de ellas.
As it could not be otherwise, spending a day at the
beach is one of the essential activities to do with
children. The municipality has lots of different beaches to choose from depending on the experience
you want. There are peaceful beaches as well as
more crowded ones. Bathing in the sea, playing in
the sand, having a picnic or flying a kite are some
experiences any child would enjoy.

A movie at the summer cinema could be the perfect final touch to a family trip. From July, outdoor screenings begin at the bowling alley of El Cagigal in Loredo. This is a complement to a wide programme of
cultural and leisure activities. The films are screened at 22:00 every Thursday of July and August and it
will include a selection of movies especially thought for children and young people.
