ETFE General

ETFE Raw Material

ETFE is a fluor polymer: Ethylene Tetra Fluor Ethylene is made of 25 %
Ethylene and 75 % Tetrafluorethylene. It belongs to the same fluor
polymer family as Teflon.
ETFE foils are extruded granulate (mostly powder). The extruded foils
are very thin from 50 m to 300 m and thus very light: 350 g/m for a
200 m foil.
The density of ETFE foils is 1.75 g/cm.

Melting point is approx. 270 C

The width of the foil on the roll is 1.550 m.

ETFE Characteristics
ETFE is extremely light, weighs only 1% of glass. Less and more
elegant supporting steel structures.
ETFE is offering clients and architects a whole new world of unique
shapes and patterns for envelope structures.
ETFE is highly transparent, offering LT up to 92%. ETFE can be printed
with standard/custom print to control solar transmission and provide
privacy. ETFE is available in opaque white and various colors.

Anti-adhesive surface properties (similar to Teflon).

High durability - in use for more than 25 years.
Resistant to temperatures from -200 to 150C.

ETFE Thermal Properties

Thermal performance is achieved by 2- or 3-layer AFP (Air Filled
Pillows).
Below table shows the U-Value for horizontal AFP structures in the
summer case (i.e. hot at pillow top, and cold at pillow bottom).

ETFE Mechanical Properties

ETFE Roofs are designed to withstand snow, wind
and seismic loads.
ETFE foils are very elastic (up to 600 % in the
plastic range) and still very resistant.
The foils have an extremely high tensile strength
and are very resistant to tear propagation. The
tensile strength at the limit to elasticity/plasticity
is 21 N/mm, but the tensile strength at break is
52 N/mm.
Roofs have been designed to withstand a wind
suction load of 220 kg/m and a snow load of 300
kg/m.

ETFE structures are

analyzed for deflection
and stress limits using FE
in accordance with
international standards.

ETFE General

ETFE Fire Resistance

ETFE foils are flame retardant B1
according to DIN 4102, Class 0
according to BS 476, and Class V-0
according to UL 94.
When ETFE foils reaches the melting
point temperature of approx. 270C
the material simply evaporates into
the air - no molten drips or debris
falling to the ground.
Novum fire test results are provided
upon request.

ETFE General

ETFE Acoustic Performance

ETFE is acoustically transparent, i.e. sound
penetrates through the ETFE foil. This means that
the foil acts as an acoustic absorber for room
acoustics, enhancing the internal perceived
environment.
ETFE does not provide sound insulation for outside
noise; hence special consideration must be taken in
the following cases:
Building types with requirements to low noise
level, e.g. libraries, auditoriums, classrooms,
offices, etc.
Buildings in the proximity of high noise level, e.g.
airports, stadiums, concert halls, train stations,
highways, etc.

ETFE Aluminum Extrusions

ETFE AFP/SSM are fixed to special
aluminum extrusions, which in turn is
fixed to the supporting steel structure.

The extrusion has internal drain that

leads rain and cleaning water to the
main perimeter drainage system.

AFP Air Supply System

Air pressure units are made of two blowers, a dehumidifier and a control unit/switch
board. All contained within a weather proof galvanized steel box.
The two blowers work with a switch. In case one blower fail the other one kicks in
immediately.

Pressure is constantly been monitored and regulated as programmed.

ETFE Cleaning & Maintenance

Fluoroplastic materials have an extremely smooth
surface. Due to the material's very high surface
tension, pollutants do not cling or stick to the foil.

In dusty climates like the Middle East, ETFE needs

regular cleaning. Normal water spraying should do
no need for sweeping or brushing.
Cleaning the foil on the inside is carried out using a
soft wet cloth. Cleaning intervals depend on the
degree of interior soiling.
SSM structures are maintenance free, whereas
AFP needs changing of air filters and inspection of
air machines. Novum can provide Cleaning &
Maintenance Manual.
