STUDIO GHIBLI

Headquartered in Kogane, Tokyo, Studio Ghibli is easily the most famous

Japanese animation and film studio in the world. Founded in 1985, the
companys logo features the fan-favorite Totoro from Hayao Miyazakis My
Neighbor Totoro. Many many times has Studio Ghibli been called the Disney
of Japan and Hayao Miyazaki the Walt Disney of Japan. I certainly cant
argue with that Miyazaki and Ghibli are both pretty magical.

Over the years Studio Ghibli has won many awards for their whimsical
creations and in 2002, Spirited Away won a Golden Bear and an Oscar for
Best Animated Feature. To this day it remains the only film made outside of
the English-speaking world to have done so.
During World War II the Italians used the sirocco for their Saharan scouting
planes. Although pronounced with a hard g in both Arabic and Italian, the
Japanese pronunciation of the word is with a soft g (ji-bu-ri).
their works most often feature common motifs, themes, and imagery for one.
These commonalities include female leads (usually younger), (talking) cats,
sweet old ladies, things related to aviation, trains, boutiques, characters with
multiple forms and identities, flocks of birds, birdlike creatures, misunderstood
male characters, secret or hidden places, and in many cases a lack of a
clearly defined antagonist.
Another fun fact is that Studio Ghibli has adopted a strict no cuts policy. This
policy was introduced after the unfortunate butchering of the American
release of Nausica which can be read more about here. The policy was
brought up again after the release of Princess Mononoke in 1997 because
Miramax wanted to make changes to the film in order to make it more
marketable to the United States when it was released over here in 1999.
Apparently Studio Ghibli responded by sending Miramax an authentic katana
with a simple message reading no cuts attached to it. Thats certainly one
way to get your point across.
Two Studio Ghibli short films created for the Ghibli Museum were shown at

the Carnegie Hall Citywise Japan NYC Festival: "House Hunting" and "Mon
Mon the Water Spider" were screened on March 26, 2011.

Takahata developed a project for release after Gor Miyazaki's (director of

Tales from Earthsea and Hayao's son) From Up on Poppy Hill an adaptation
of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. Hayao Miyazaki's last film he directed
before retiring from feature films (as of 2014) is The Wind Rises which is
about the Mitsubishi A6M Zero and its founder.

Sunday, September 1, 2013, Hayao Miyazaki held a press conference in

Venice, confirming his retirement saying: "I know I've said I would retire many
times in the past. Many of you must think, 'Once again.' But this time I am
quite serious."

On January 31, 2014, it was announced that Gor Miyazaki will direct his first
anime TV series, Sanzoku no Musume Rnya, an adaptation of Astrid
Lindgren's Ronia the Robber's Daughter for NHK. The series is computeranimated, produced by Polygon Pictures, and co-produced by Studio Ghibli.

In March 2014 Toshio Suzuki retired as a producer and assumed a new

position of general manager. Yoshiaki Nishimura replaced Suzuki in the
producer role.

On August 3, 2014, Toshio Suzuki announced that Studio Ghibli would take a
"brief pause" to re-evaluate and restructure in the wake of Miyazaki's
retirement. He stated some concerns about where the company would go in
the future. This has led to speculation that Studio Ghibli will never produce
another feature film again. On November 7, 2014, Miyazaki stated, "That was
not my intention, though. All I did was announce that I would be retiring and
not making any more features.
