21 Drifting Toward Disunion, 1854-1861

1) Stowe and Helper: Literary Incendiaries


a) In 1852 Uncle Toms Cabin was published by Harriet Beecher
Stowe which further made the north argue for the abolishment of
slavery
b) Uncle Toms Cabin was said by President Lincoln to be the cause
of this war
2) The North-South Contest for Kansas
a) Kansas was an example of the poor use of popular sovereignty
b) Slave owners who brought their slaves to Kansas were commonly
thought to be making a large mistake because Kansas night be
made a free state
3) Kansas in Convulsion
a) Kansas had been led to a state of civil war, that was led by slave
owners wanting to spread slavery to Kansas
b) Eventually Kansas would be able to hold slaves in their state
4) Bully Brook and His Bludgeons
a) Bleeding Kansas had a great affect on the floor of the senate
i) The two new groups had drawn lines in the sand, and they
were not going to turn their backs on it
5) Old Buck Versus The Pathfinder
a) In this time period the Republican party began to rise, and the
candidates used a gross amount of anti-foreignism in their
campaigns
i) The republicans were favored in the north and democrats in
the south
6) The Electoral Fruits of 1856
a) Buchanan won because Freeman was thought to be greatly
dishonest, and thusly was not elected by the people
7) The Dred Scott Bombshell
a) Dred Scott a black slave had lived in Illinois and Wisconsin with
his owner, and ended up saying that he deserved freedom
because his owner had lived in an area where slaves could not be
owned
i) The Supreme Court ruled that Dred Scott was not free
although he had been taken to a free state thanks to the
Fugitive Slave Law
8) The Financial Crash of 1857
a) The crash was caused by the inpouring of gold from California,
the rush to buy land, and support the railroads, and Crimean war
which over stimulated the growing of grain
i) To solve this problem they were to give away land on the
homestead so people would grow crops for them
ii) This was met with opposition from industrialists whom needed
the support of workers to keep their industry alive

9) An Illinois Rail-Splitter Emerges


a) Lincoln emerged and was considered awkward and had been
mostly self-educated
i) He had married into a higher breed of people the Todds
10) The Great Debate: Lincoln versus Douglas
a) Lincoln was the underdog in these debates, but would prove
himself with his brain, and ideas
i) While debating Lincoln most famously said A house divided
cannot stand
11) John Brown: Murderer or Martyr
a) John Brown was a very outspoken abolitionist whom arranged for
a slave uprising with his sons where they would take control of
the federal arsenal in 1859
i) Unfortunately no slaves would join. In the south hed be
known as a murderer in the north a hero
12) A Rail-Splitter splits the Union
a) Lincoln won the election because the people saw him as
something different that Douglas someone who was more honest
13) The Elctoral Upheaval of 1860
a) Lincoln was the undisputed victor of the Election the votes in the
North and the West were his biggest supports
14) The Secessionist Exodus
a) South Carolina angered by the election seceded from the union
just four days after his election
i) Other southern states soon followed suit most voting to leave
the union

The Collapse of Compromise
a) The South became so angered that no compromise the Union
could make would be good enough for them
i) They were irrationally angry
16) Farewell to Union
a) The South left leaving the U.S. disjointed and they claimed that
Lincoln was solely blamable for this, and that he would ruin the
Union
i) Southern leaders considered this their golden opportunity to
be able to keep slavery from here after
