Letter from the Editor

The perils of being Parineeti
Parineeti Chopra is a super talented actor who didnt have
a release for the last two years. Her last release was Kill
Dill (2014), a Sholay-obsessed comedy thriller that didnt
quite click with the audience. On the personal front too, her
romance with director Maneesh Sharma has kind of run out of
steam though shes working in Meri Pyari Bindu produced by
him. In this rom com co-starring Ayushmann Khurrana, shes
reportedly playing an aspiring singer. She has sung a song in
the film as well, emulating her cousin Priyanka Chopra, who
did it last year in the family drama Dil Dhadakne Do. Priyanka
has released singles internationally before that, so we were
kind of expecting a transition into playback too.
Its a bitch to be related to someone famous in showbiz
because youd always be unfairly compared to that person.
Priyanka, what with prestigious international projects like
Quantico and Baywatch in her kitty, is currently going places
while Parineetis career looks like it has reached a plateau.
To her credit, Parineeti has always held Priyanka as an
inspirational figure and hasnt let the envy show. She was
criticised for having a tad too generous curves and has literally
worked her ass off to get into shape just look at our cover,
specially shot in Goa to see what we mean. She isnt size zero
by any means its a wrong ideal to aim for in any case. The
fact remains that the screen remains an unforgiving mistress
and shows you off in bad light if you fall below celluloid
standards. Parineeti has learnt that now.
She has also learnt not to let depression get to her and
remains her perky self. Shes always been a natural in front of
the camera and has been admired for a certain earthiness she
brings to the characters she portrays. And films like Hasee
Toh Phasee, where she played a girl suffering from severe
psychological issues, and Shuddh Desi Romance, where she
was a girl with an uninhibited approach to sex and towards
relationships are proof enough that she isnt interested in mere
arm-candy roles. Actresses are coming of age in cinema today.
They are getting better paychecks and bigger, meatier roles
are being written for them. Its good to stand firm and demand
more break the glass ceiling, push the envelope further. Shes
always done that and we hope minor setbacks dont become a
deterrent to her realising her full potential.
Read on for some straight from the heart answers and some
hot, haute photos of the reinvented Parineeti

MASALA FIX

Rumours&More
BLOW HOT
BLOW COLD

Recently, Sushant Singh Rajput and Ankita Lokhande were in the

news for their six-year-old relationship hitting a rough patch. There was
talk about incompatibility and Sushant not being able to give time
to his ladylove. A few years ago too, Sushants alleged proximity with
Parineeti Chopra had supposedly driven a wedge in the romance. Of
course, that story died an unceremonious death. This time, however,
things just got worse. There were whispers that
they had split. Insiders
revealed that Sushants
closeness to his
Raabta co-star Kriti
Sanon, given the time
they spent together
preparing for their
film, was the reason.
Just when everyone
was going nudge
nudge wink wink,
Ankita expressed
her shock at talks
of a breakup. So
did Sushant. She
emphatically stated
that she trusted
Sushant implicitly
and there was no
question of a split.
So for now all seems
hunky dory with the
duo. Cheers!

SRK AND SLB

BONDED OVER
A DRINK
Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali gave
us the unforgettable Devdas way back in 2002.
The good news is that the two might collaborate
once again. Insiders say that after winding up at
an award function in Dubai recently, SRK invited
SLB to his room for a drink. They were together till
the wee hours reminiscing about Devdas. It seems,
the superstar even suggested that he and the director
should work together again. Fingers crossed!

Meanwhile

SLB hosted a party recently to celebrate his National

Award. The whos who of the industry attended the
bash to congratulate SLB. Ranveer Singh was naturally
there too. But he left early due to hectic work schedule.
Guess who stayed back? Yes Shah Rukh Khan. Devdas
songs echoed through the night. And naturally, SRK killed
the dance floor with his unfailing energy.

MASALA FIX

PARINEETI AND
MANEESH GET
TOGETHER
Parineeti Chopras and Maneesh
Sharmas on-off relationship
continues to make news. The actress
and the director are back together
again. But this time were talking
about a film. We hear that Maneesh
will be directing the actress,
who has added oodles
of glamour to her
now svelte persona.
Interestingly,
Parineeti Chopra
will be producing the
project.

MAHESH MANJREKAR WILL DIRECT

A FILM FOR SALMAN KHAN PRODUCTIONS
SUGGESTS THE GRAPEVINE. APPARENTLY,
HES BEEN ASKED TO WRITE THE FILM
KEEPING SOORAJ PANCHOLI IN MIND

SID-ALIA
GOING STRONG
Sylistas: Sisters Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan sure
make the act of coming out of the airport look like a runway walk.
They make casual look classy with their oomph and grace. We like

AbRam - the superstar!

We all know how popular Shah
Rukh Khan is amongst women.
But theres someone whos giving
him tough competition. His lil son
AbRam. Apparently, the cute toddler
is a big hit amongst the B-town
women. All of them dote on him and
often request SRK to get him on the
set. Of all the actresses, Parineeti
Chopra is the one totally obsessed
with AbRam. Shed visit the sets of
Fan to spend time with the tiny tot.
And the days he wasnt around,
shed request SRK to send for him.

There are talks of Sidharth Malhotra and

Alia Bhatt doing another film for Dharma
Productions. The news of Sid-Alia starring in
an Aashiqui franchise is also doing the
rounds. Good going for this pair,
which is also rumoured to be in a
steady relationship. Meanwhile,
Alia and Varun Dhawan will
soon start work on their next,
a spin off on Humpty
Sharma Ki Dulhania. The
film will be helmed by
Shashank Khaitan
who also directed
Humpty... Also,
industry observers
were left baffled as
to why Varun and Alia
refused the remake
of Mani Ratnams
popular film, Ok
Kanmani which is now
being made as Ok Jaanu
with Shraddha Kapoor
and Aditya Roy Kapur.

MASALA FIX

SRK-Anushka
team up for
Imtiaz Ali
Shah Rukh Khan and Imtiaz Ali have
come together for a film. And they
have also locked Anushka Sharma
for it. She is currently shooting with
Salman Khan for Sultan. This will
be Anushkas third film with the
superstar after her debut
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and
Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

NAME GAME

The sequel to Bang Bang starring Sidharth Malhotra and

Jacqueline Fernandez was titled Bang Bang Reloaded. But since
the film has nothing to do with the Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Kaif
starrer, it will also get a new name.

AANAND L RAI PATCHES UP

WITH SAMEER

Two hot to handle: Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif set the dais on fire
when they appeared together for a promotional event. Dont they look
like the cutest besties on earth?

Its believed that producer

Aanand L Rai and director
Sameer Sharma couldnt see
eye to eye during the filming
of Manmarziyaan, starring
Ayushmann Khurrana and
Bhumi Pednekar. After almost
a months schedule, Aanand
apparently showed Sameer the
door. Thankfully, things have
now cooled down between the
two. Recently, Sameer was seen
visiting Aanands office. We wish
them the best.

MASALA FIX

OOPS!

So everyone at Dharma
Productions was amused when a
website conjectured that Deepika
Padukone and Fawad Khan were
doing a film for the banner. The
website even put up funky posters
of the two. It all looked convincing
except that it isnt true. As of now,
Dharma has no plans of a film
with the pair. But we agree, they
do make a good pair.

Glory boys: Fawad Khan and Sidharth Malhotra sure made Shakun Batras day when they hoisted him up
in the air in as they were celebrating the success of their film Kapoor & Sons. Oh boy!

VARUN
GOES SOLO

KAT EATS
THE CREAM
We already told you that Tarun
Mansukhani will finally don
the directors hat post Dostana.
Salman Khans banner has roped
him in to direct the film. We hear,
Katrina Kaif has been signed for
this project. The role was initially
offered to Priyanka Chopra and
Deepika Padukone but both
cited date problems.

Varun Dhawan has decided

that he will no longer be part
of two-hero films. So far his
films, Student Of The Year,
Dilwale and the upcoming
Dishoom are two-hero
projects. Even in Badlapur,
ABCD 2 and Humpty Sharma
Ki Dulhania, there was a
strong presence of supporting
actors. But now, Varun wants
to shoulder the film all by
himself. Dishoom will be the
last film where hell share
screen space with co-actor
John Abraham.

AFTER GARNERING ACCOLADES FOR HIS

STUPENDOUS PERFORMANCE IN KAPOOR & SONS,

came to meet his daughter and bumped into Varun and showered him with much affection,
much to the young stars happiness.

Bips and
Karan to tie
the knot?

Apparently, lovebirds Bipasha

Basu and Karan Singh Grover are
rumoured to tie the knot in April.
The two found love on the set of
Alone, their first film together.
Ever since, the two have been
spotted together at restaurants,
films and even taking exotic
vacations. They have been candid
about their relationship, even
posting their pictures on social
networking sites. Now theyre
planning to take their relationship
to the next level by getting
married. We wish them luck!

KARAN GIVES KAYOZE

IRANI A BREAK, AGAIN
Karan Johar was the one to give a break to
Boman Iranis son, Kayoze in his popular flick,
Student Of The Year. And now we hear that he
is giving him another break this time as a
director. Kayoze will direct a film for Dharma
Productions. Karan has okayed the story.
Kayoze is now busy writing the script.

Tame it down
A popular superstar was not so happy
watching a young star make a legendary
actor uncomfortable with his gimmicks
at an award function. He didnt express
his displeasure at that moment. But later
he reprimanded the youngster for fooling
around with a veteran, someone with whom
even seniors never cross the line.

- Rituparna Sengupta
It has to be special
SCENE AND HEARD:

Half of the film is set

in the train and half of
it is in flashback. We
see veteran Soumitra
Chatterjee passionately
singing a song for Sabitri
Chatterjee. Her reaction
is a beatific smile that
lights up the set. The next
part of the scene involves
Prosenjit Chatterjee
serenading Aparajita.
While hes engrossed in
that, his ex Rituparna
looks longingly at him.
The directors, Nandita
Roy and Shiboprosad
Mukherjee, call for a tea
break. Everyone has their
fill of samosas, chai and
misti doi. Actor Jisshu Sen
Gupta visits the sets to
meet Soumitra. He wants
to invite the veteran to
a charity event. Soumitra
declines, citing his
poor health and Jisshu
politely leaves.
The next is a farewell
scene shot on the station
set. Prosenjit hugs his
wife but his eyes are on
his ex and an unspoken
communication takes
place between them. The
junior artistes in the scene
fail to give their cues on
time. A retake ensues.
directors Nandita and
Shibu okay the shot only
after they are satisfied. As
the next shot is readied,
a horde of junior artistes
surround Prosenjit. He
knows most of them by
name and inquires about
their well-being. Prosenjit
and Rituparna are coming

together in Praktan after

14 years. Says Prosenjit,
We used to do hardcore
mainstream cinema
together. During this
interval Ritu has grown
as an actress. I too have
done many experimental
films. This subject was
interesting to both of us.
Rituparna reiterates, The
magic that we have created
as a pair hasnt been
created by any other pair
so far. As two pillars of the
Bengal film industry, we
cannot appear in a random
film. It has to be special; it
has to have immense value
for us both.
The director duo has
learnt to divide their
duties. While Shibu
handles the actors,
Nandita looks after the
technical aspects. Being
an actor himself, Shibu
understands their psyche
and communicates easily
with them, explains
Nandita. Its a matter of
pride for them to work
with legends like Soumitra
and Sabitri. Says Shibu,
Soumitrada happened
to tell me, Im not going
to say anything in a
comedy scene because
I know Sabitri will take
away the scene. As an
actor Soumitrada looks
up to Sabitridi. Her comic
timing is unparalleled.
Well, with such a
matchless cast, Praktan,
which means ex in
Bengali, will seemingly
enjoy a good fate at the
n
box-office.

They are hot, they are cool.

You know summer is here when you
spot celebs in white. White has shed

tinseltown divas show you how to pull

My absolute favourite hairstyle for

2016! You can braid the crown
hair before it gets into a bun/
topknot to make it look interesting
and leave the rest of the hair wavy
and playful. It looks stylish and is
convenient because though your
hair is half open, no strands fall on
your face. The best part is that you

loose and tight up hair.

If you dont have naturally wavy
hair, then use a thick hair curler
and take big sections of hair and
curl them in opposite directions

next section curl out). Try to leave
the root and the ends out of the

SHIVAN AND
NARRESH

Pear-shaped, hourglass, athletic or

stoke the sexy in every woman with their
exotic swimwear, writes Kinnari Rathod
You guys are the numero
uno in B-towns fashion
scenario in swimwear.
Whats the magic?
We are passionate about
art. It continues to inspire
us. Swimwear allows us
to amalgamate art and
fashion. Its exciting to
interpret an illustration
and watch it come alive
on the runway and into
peoples wardrobes.The
process of translating art
into fashion keeps our
adrenaline going.
What is a major trend for
resort wear this year?
This year the Holiday &
Honeymoon wardrobes
will see the return of
the glamorous 80s with
surreal prints and a colour
palette of blue, terracotta,
pink and electric green.
The emphasis is on
textural details such as
leather and fringes. Resort
wear will see the return
of the summer dress in
a printed voluminous
version. Swimwear will go
more daring with cut-outs.

Whats your take on

the Indian woman and
swimwear?
Indian women probably
have the most suited body
type for swimwear. The
curves are at all the right
places and they beautifully
accentuate the beauty of
a swimsuit, whether its a
one-piece maillot, a twopiece bikini or a daring
trikini (one piece with cut
outs on the waist). Back in

Indian women have the most suited body type for swimwear.
The curves accentuate the beauty of a swimsuit, whether its
a one-piece maillot, a two-piece bikini or a daring trikini!

2010, when we first started

our brand, the industry
was non-existent.
Women didnt have access
to brands for this category,
unless they travelled
abroad. Coming to 2016,
Indian women have now
become aware of their
unique body-type and its
nuances while shopping
for swimwear. Also,
theyre more confident in
embracing this category.
The demand has been
spurred majorly by the
growing population of
Indians holidaying and
honeymooning on beach or
resort destinations. They
want to make the right
choices for dressing. Also,
the growing number of
destination weddings has
seen a rise in the demand
for this category.
What went behind the
execution of the novel
Bikini Saree?
The bikini saree has been
a landmark creation for
the brand. It comes from
the idea of a modernistic
bathing suit while catering
to the needs of the Indian
societal setup. It can be
draped in 10 different
ways and has gained
tremendous popularity
ever since its invention.
Its perfect for the lounging
holiday goers by the beach
or a pool. And draping it
over the shoulder makes
it incredibly glamourous.
The resort saree can be
worn anywhere from
the beach and the bar to
destination weddings. This
is an iconic invention by
the brand. The range of
versatility caused by the
Bikini Saree can be seen in
the wardrobes of the young
body-con honeymooners to
45-50 year-old-women who
are body conscious.

Please elaborate on the type of

swimwear for different body types

Pear Shape
Pear-shaped women are torso heavy.
The idea is to shift the focus to
long legs and beautiful shoulders,
highlighting either of the two.
Anything from a diagonal cut maillot
to a one shoulder or a boat neck
is recommended. They must give
prominence to the collarbones apart
from opting for higher cuts at the
hip, which make the legs look long
and slender. Also, colour blocking
with high contrast colours would suit
this body type.

SONAM
KAPOOR

Straight
KATRINA
KAIF

Women with a
straight body type
should select
necklines that help to
accentuate the bust
and create curves.
Halter bandeaus and
triangular bikinis work
the best for them. A
trikini would also be
a great option as it
gives an illusion of a
lean and curvy figure.
Moreover, cut-outs in
the midriff help the
eye to presume a
slender waist.

ATHIYA
SHETTY

Curvy/Hourglass

Athletic

Any silhouette
would work for
them. From a
quintessential maillot
to a two-piece swimsuit,
they can experiment with
different styles and cuts. Most
Indian body types fit into this
category. This is best suited for
a swimsuit. They can pick a bikini
to emphasise their waistline, or
a halter to underline the bust.
You could even go in for a highwaisted bottom and bralet as
the roaring 60s are back. If
youre heavier on the bust,
avoid bandeau tops.

Women with an athletic

frame should choose
bikinis or trikinis. Usually
blessed with strong and
broad shoulders they
have a parallel body type,
hence the idea is to give
an illusion of a thinner
waistline. Trikinis would
be the best option for
them. They should avoid
halters and bandeau
styles as they make the
shoulders look broader.
One-shoulder or twin
shoulder maillots would
be most appropriate.

PRIYANKA CHOPRA

Though shes in snowy Montreal

filming Quantico, Priyanka tells us that
during sunny days she leans towards
anything linen. She says a hot pair of
denim shorts are a must in every girls
summer wardrobe. When asked how
she likes to unwind she laughs and
says, I work! If I do get any time off,
I hang out at the beach, swim a little,
read a book and catch a few zzzzz. Her
summer advice would be, Drink lots
of coconut water or have lemonade or
chaas. Cleanse, moisturise and apply
ample of sunscreen for the face and
body with the right SPF protection.

NARGIS FAKHRI

Shes a nature lover, hands

down. And a hot bikini makes
for the most important wardrobe
essential for her. When it comes to
preserving her beauty in summer,
Nargis Fakhri says, Any sunscreen,
hydrating bombs, a good facial
wash are musts. Her ideal
summer would be going back
to Greece to meet her friends.
Visiting islands, eating good food,
chilling on the beach is what
I love. Getting a tan, listening to
good music, attending day clubs
are other fun activities, she says.
Water with lemon and Sangria is
her favourite drink.

VARUN DHAWAN

Varun Dhawan says his

must-have summer essential
are boxers. With a body as
hot as his, is it any surprise?
The actor relies on his trusted
face wash and a chilled glass
of nimbu pani to refresh in
the scorching weather. After
a long day of shooting, I love
to unwind in the pool, a night
time dip is always nice.

SONAM KAPOOR

Mojito is Sonam Kapoors favourite

summer drink. The sartorial queen
picks a white cotton shirt and
Kolhapuri chappals as her summer
essentials. The glowing complexion
is maintained by keeping the skin
hydrated and using a face and
body scrub. I cant do without a
sunscreen! I love swimming and
summer means wearing as little
as possible, she says.

SIDHARTH MALHOTRA

Sidharth loves bringing out his sunglass

collection in the summers to go with his
outfits. A tip from the hunk, Ditch the
socks this summer and pick up ballet
socks. Thats in right now. He reveals the
secret to his flawless complexion is healthy
eating and a clean lifestyle. A water baby
like his good friend Alia, Sidharth likes
to dip in the pool. When asked about his
favourite summer memory, he says, Mom
would serve Roohafza sherbet. We would
spend our summers in Shimla.

RANVEER SINGH

Top picks for the summer, for fashion

sensation, Ranveer Singh, would be a sheer
white tee, a sleeveless tank top, a pair of
breathable runners, broad shorts and a nice
pair of sunnies. Like a true blue cool lad, his
skincare regime is fuss-free and minimal.
I drink a lot of water and the skin takes
care of itself. The actor says he loves
to chill in the pool
and beats the
summer heat with a
revitalising glass
of nimbu pani.

ALIA BHATT

FAWAD KHAN

What does this hottie do

when the weather gets
scorching? In summers,
I like to stay indoors in an
air-conditioned room after
a nice cold bath. And
while linen shirts make
for his summer wardrobe
staples, namkeen lassi
cools him off.

Alias got the snazziest style game for

summers. Shes all about loose pants
and boho outfits. She suggests pairing
a white kurta and kurta pants as the
perfect ensemble. Summer for her is
also all about colours. A bold, bright
lipstick completes her breezy look. For
cooling down, Alia suggests adding
chia seeds to your juice or water. When
asked how she unwinds she says,
I work, work, work! And then I sleep at
home in the AC. But Im a total water
baby; beaches always make me happy.

summer
of cool

Parineeti Chopra talks about how to get a perfect body this summer.
Anuradha Choudhary tracks the secret of the superfit actress
Every once in a while comes a time in an actors life when he or she finds themselves at the crossroads.
When it seems like it could be make or break for them. When you have no choice but to change
your trajectory or perish. A year and half ago, Parineeti Chopra deiceded she couldnt continue the way she was
anymore. Her talent, of course, was never in doubt. But her weight became a talking point.
Could she afford to carry those extra kilos when her contemporaries were flaunting well-sculpted bodies?
She couldnt. So she dropped off the radar to work on herself. Today the transformation is complete.
Shes shed those extra kilos. Shes toned up and raring to go. I didnt like the way I was, she claims. I had to do this
for myself. I still have a few months to go for my ideal body. But Im happy. Were on the Morjim beach in Goa, soaking
up the sun. Its our summer special. What better place than Goa for it. The camera drools all over her.
She exults in the attention. A wispy curl blows off her face, the breeze has been making overtures all day. Far away
the sun gently kisses the ocean. And Parineeti exclaims, Ive never felt more confident of my body than now!
She poses for the camera with verve anew. Its the look of a woman in love with herself. Back in Mumbai, were sitting
in a tony eatery. Weve placed our order. And the attention turns to the actress. Shes sans make-up
and glowing like a 1000-watt bulb. Her fitness regime clearly doing wonders.
Food and fitness are favourite topics with her, so I begin by asking...

Youve changed so much

physically how do you
feel about yourself now?
I feel more confident of
myself. I feel like a 27-year
old now. Earlier, I was
always trying to hide my
body. I felt insecure about
what I wore and how I
looked. Id be like I cant
wear sleeveless outfits.
A young girl shouldnt
have to think about all
this. Youth is all about
fitness. (Laughs)You are
any way going to be unfit
in your old age. Youth
is about experimenting
with your looks. Youve
got to have stamina; you
should be able to work for
long hours. I wasnt able
to do anything. I would
feel sleepy all the time. Id
have no stamina; a fourfive hour shoot would
tire me out. I was always
conscious about camera
angles. I was conscious
about how I would be
photographed.

And today?

Now when I wake up

in the morning I am
sharp, Im alert. Im able
to communicate better
because I am not thinking
about anything else. Im
not like Oh I have to hide
this part of my body.
Thats why I did the Built
That Way campaign. It
was all about the attitude.
I could have easily done
a lingerie or a sexy
glamorous shoot and been
like heres my new body.
But I wanted to inspire
people to just become
their fittest self whatever
size that is. It doesnt
matter. Ive seen dancers
who are big but theyre so
flexible and fit. Whereas,
Ive seen the skinniest of
people fainting. I was like
whatever is my

fittest version I want to

reach there.

The campaign backfired

a bit because people
said Oh now shes
following the herd
mentality to fit in

It was understandable
that it would happen
because I debuted with an
overweight character.
I carried that forward
to the next few films.
So people had accepted
me in that form. The
problem was they didnt
understand why Id lost
the weight. They thought
that Id lost weight
because some producer or
director had told me Now
please become skinny.
Which was not the case!
Ive wanted to lose weight
for the past 10 years. Ive
been overweight for 10
years. I was in the midst
of losing weight when
I became an actor. And
then I became so busy that
I didnt work on myself.
Last year, when I started
doing up my house I was
like okay this is the time
I can work on myself.
I had six months, I wasnt
shooting. So I could diet,
exercise, experiment
whatever.

What was the kind of

feedback you received?

I guess, Ive received

more positive reviews
that negative from that
shoot. Ive had pregnant
women, older women,
girls, boys randomly
coming up to me and
saying Ive changed their
lives. Yesterday, I went
for a meeting at Taj Lands
End and the manager said,
You know maam that
photo shoot of yours has
changed my sisters life.
She used to be sick all

people who reacted

negatively to my
campaign changed
their minds. They
realised that shes
not doing it just
to show bones.
Shes doing it for
a reason. Earlier,
they were judging
me only by how
I looked. They didnt
know that I was
feeling really bad
about myself. that
I was feeling
unhealthy and tired
all the time
the time and now shes
become healthy and fit.
She has your pictures as
her wall paper. These
are the people I actually
wanted to inspire because
I am a typically fat-to-fit
story. I wanted people to
believe if she can do it,
so can we. Not to become
skinny, mind you. But
to be fit. I know I can

Those people who reacted
negatively changed their
mind. They realised that
shes not doing it just to
show bones. Shes doing it
for a reason. Earlier
they were judging me only
by how I looked. They
didnt know that
I was feeling really

bad. That I was feeling

unhealthy and tired all
the time. I would sleep
so much. So while I was
looking all cute, they
didnt know that my skin
was not glowing, my
hair was falling. I was an
unhealthy person.

You went to this spa

VivaMayr in Austria,
didnt you?

Its not a spa. Its a

medical clinic where you
can get yourself tested for
allergies and intolerances.
But the real work is yours.
You have to eat right and
work out. Theres no other
way to be fit.

What did the experience

at the clinic teach you?

It taught me a lot about

myself, about my body
and the ways I could lead
a healthy life. The right
way to eat, how many
meals a day, everything

You think this is a body

obsessed generation?

Hmmm I guess the film

industry is a bit image
obsessed and thats fair.
Because there are those 1015 chosen people who are
in the movies. Even when
I watch my favourite
actors, I love it when
theyre looking their best.
And if theyre not I dont
feel inspired by them.
So its fair that these
10-15 people who are
representing our industry,
should look their best. It
helps. Would you like a
heroine running in slow
motion looking unfit? It
doesnt gell. Tomorrow, if
I do a film that requires me
to be unfit right now
I wouldnt consider it, its
a scary thought but if Im
required to I would do it.
Like Tom Hanks changes

ONE WORD THAT DESCRIBES SUMMER

BEST ACCORDING TO YOU?

Cool clothes. For me summer means that

I can wear shorts and girly clothes and be
comfortable. I dont have to wear woollens.
Thats why I love Mumbai because the
weather is always the same.

HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR

SKIN IN SUMMER?

I drink lots of water. And actually just keep it

clean. I dont smoke or drink alcohol. I dont
have habits that would affect my system
inside. I eat clean food. I dont eat too much
of non-vegetarian food. I also sleep well. Its
important to sleep well. I go to bed early and
wake up early. Ive always been like this.

HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR

HAIR IN SUMMER?

My hair was getting spoilt because of the

products I was using for the shoots and
because of the heat. So, Ive started oiling my
hair. The days, Im not shooting, I immediately
oil my hair because its the only thing that
nourishes it. Ive never oiled my hair all my life
but now I do.

WHATS YOUR BEAUTY MANTRA

DURING SUMMER?

I dont use a lot of chemicals on my body.

The only thing I use is a shower gel. I try
and wash my make-up off with just water
or a moisturizing lotion. My beauty mantra
would be keep it water based, use minimal
chemicals.

HOW DO YOU UNWIND IN SUMMER?

Youll see me in a pool. For me, summer

means I should be on a beach, scuba diving
anything in water. And Im also the kind of
person who likes to sit on a balcony where
there is a fresh breeze blowing and read
a book. Im not someone who feels hot all
the time. So I dont need to be in an airconditioned room. Im happy if its just breezy.
Im actually quite low maintenance.

A CHILDHOOD SUMMER MEMORY

My grandparents used to stay in Nairobi,

so Id visit Kenya every summer. And from
Kenya wed go to exotic places like Sicily or
Mauritius, Mombasa and other islands around
us. So all my summer memories are of being
in the pool, in the water or on a safari. My
grandfather was amazing. He wanted to give
us the best life. He used to fly us down so we
saw half the world before we were 15.

his physical appearance for

every role. If youre doing
Mr & Mrs Smith you cant
expect Angelina Jolie to be
unfit. It just doesnt go.

What is your take on body

shaming?

It exists. I have
experienced it when
I was overweight. Body
shaming works both ways
for overweight people and
underweight people. Some
actresses have been called
anorexic just because
theyre thin. But you dont
know why someone is a
certain weight. They could
have a medical issue. How
can you body shame them?
But the most important
thing is how the person
whos being body shamed
reacts. Some people
I know are comfortable
with the way they look.
In my first interview
with Filmfare, Id said
nobody likes a fat actress
because actresses are
supposed to look beautiful
and fit. And people
thought that I was trying
to be rebellious and be
like main aisi hi hoon.
But I didnt want to be
fat. Its just that I was too
busy working on four
films back to back. I had
no time for myself. When
people would ask me, Are
you one of those actresses
whos comfortable the way
she is? Id say no. I know
I can look better and I want
to. So I never reacted to
body shamming because
I used to agree with them.
Its taken me a year to lose
this much weight. Im sure
its going to take six more
months to reach where
I want to.

How do you maintain

yourself now?
The mirror is my

inspiration. When I look at

myself in the mirror, I am
like okay I want to keep
this. I tell myself Ive eaten
everything I wanted to. I
know it tastes great but I
dont need it now. Again if
I feel like eating something,
I do. I never deprive
myself. And if Ive eaten
something I shouldnt then
I know how to balance it
out in the next few days.
The first few months when
I started out were tough.
I was like, Kuch nahi ho
raha. Why am I going to
the gym? Why am I not
eating what I want to eat?
Why am I killing myself?
I would work out for two
hours and I wouldnt see
any difference. You dont
see results for a while.
After two months
I hadnt lost even a kilo.
Then you wake up one day
and you feel different and
youre like its working.
The body gets into
momentum, slowly you
start feeling the difference.
You just have to keep at
it. Earlier, Id suddenly
go on crash diets and say
Ill lose weight in 10 days.
But it never happened.
The body needs little bit of
time. I remember I used to
do suryanamaskar in the
beginning. It was tough.
Then one day I did 15 at
once without thinking.
I could feel the difference.

Do you get midnight

cravings?

Yes. And then I want

pizza or thick parathas
and dal. I am a food
person, not a dessert
person. I crave bread,
peanut butter. But I cant
have these things. So
I just drink something and
go to sleep. If you really
want to eat something at
midnight, then just drink

always soup in my fridge.
It satisfies your craving
and youve not done
any harm. But midnight
cravings dont happen
anymore. Your body stops
craving stuff on its own.
Like, Id see pictures of
Nutella sandwiches and
Id want it. Now I look at
it and Im like Arrgh,
I cant have it. Your mind
switches off.

How does it feel when

people call you hot now?

It definitely feels good

because being hot was
never associated with me.
I was always cute like
awww shes so sweet.
And I would be like
I want to be hot! Now
everyone looks at me in a
different way. Like I didnt

Do you feel that fitness/

physical appearance has
become more important
than talent out here?

Noooooo. No not at all.

Talent is everything. If
someone only looks good
or looks fit but doesnt
know to act, I dont think
it helps them. Most of
the people who are at the
top and have been here
for years. Even some of
the new ones whove
really cut through, are the
ones whove shown their
talent. I genuinely cant
remember people who just
look good and have been
successful. I was never
known for my looks but
Ive managed four years
because I could perform.

What makes a woman

beautiful?

Her personality and her

laugh. I get attracted
to people who laugh
wholeheartedly. I like
women who are not stuck
up, whore animated and

Most actors today seem to

From the day she flounced into Sanjay

Sonam got my heart. Just like that. Theres
that ineffable feeling. Shes beautiful, shes
fickle, shes insecure, shes all love. And
shes mine. I feel proprietorial about her every time
I meet her. Its like a warm sugar treacle feeling that
enters your soul and makes space in it.
Saawariya bombed and I knew she was disappointed
as hell. Also because Deepika Padukone had whizzed
past and so had good friend Ranbir Kapoor. Whenever
we met we gossiped like school pals. She would

yammer to fill the air in. There was one occasion when
I misunderstood her intentions and wrote a particularly
harsh piece. That was bad journalism. If she was hurt
she didnt show it. Sorry Sonam.
But Sonam hung in there. Her acting chops were
drubbed down but she took it chin up. She made it
as the countrys biggest stylista and represented us
at international events including Cannes. She became
a designers muse. Then Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
and Aanand L Rai stepped in. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
and Raanjhanaa respectively offered glimmers of what
she could be. Under the right hands she could shine
like a beacon.

are there for everyone to see. Shes for sure
launched a hundred Filmfare covers. Id
like to believe she puts in that extra effort
for me, for the magazine because of that
special bond.
Shes never spoken in the press about
her personal life. But off it, shes vocal and garrulous.
Be it her director boyfriend or a businessman she was
dating briefly, she oscillated between extreme warmth
to feeling-so-blah. Sonams yet to find her knight-inshining-armour.

suspect shes amused by my colleague

Anuradha Chaudhary and me. She believes we
are biased and that we dont love her enough
and yet gives us those polar-bear hugs. Once
we were jointly interviewing her and she was
worried that we would fight for our bylines.
A friend of mine Ashish met her. He fell
in love. He wrote the most beautiful piece on
her. Most of which I didn't understand. But there was
poetry, no less. Sonam, who was shooting two shifts,
gave him a couple of hours. Ashish is today a fan boy.
Shes committed to causes. Be it the LGBT cause,
which she tirelessly espouses or other charities she
wont talk about. She gives it as good as she gets. She
sportingly turned up to accept a nomination and an
award at some local version of the Razzies. Plus, shes
a sport when it comes to taking potshots at herself.
Besides Alia Bhatt now, Im yet to see another female

actor so easy with criticism or selfdeprecation.

Shes impossible when she
shoots her mouth off. Thats pretty
much got her into trouble with her
co-stars. We have shhhed her up
so many times and also tried to
censor her copy! But shes sharp
and nothing can stop that ticking
mind to morph into a racy tongue.
Often a stars generosity can be gauged by the food
they serve you. We are old school that way. You are
what you serve. And Sonams house serves up a
gourmet of food. Never mind even if she wont eat a
morsel. Generosity of spirit is a state of mind. Much like
a fashion statement. I must add there was a time when
Sonams dad, Anil Kapoor, would insist on serving the
best akoori sandwiches in the whole wide world.
And then providence came in the form of Neerja.
A biopic that has her name written on it! She gave the
performance of her life, an air of tragedy and anguish
seldom seen on scene. This was Sonams annus
mirabilis. Her scene in the aircraft where she reads her
boyfriends letter or when she huddles into safety it
seemed as if some faucet had opened up and she was
sucking all of lifes experiences out of it.
Two years ago she had told me that by 30 she would
be married and settle far far away from the movies. But
after Neerja I know for a fact that shes going nowhere.
And that its just begun! But with Sonam you cant tell
anything. Shes really like the story book princess who
can grab the folds of the gown and disappear into the
night. Like that day in Sanjay Leela Bhansalis well
appointed drawing room.

She says shes willing to

a huge benchmark to live

e owes his
journey as a
composer to
Salman Khan.
When he was 16,
his father signed Salman
Khan as an actor. That
film never happened.
Salman promised to give
him a break after listening
to the songs that he had
composed for the film.
He kept his promise with
Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna
Kya (1998). Himesh went
on to compose for other
Salman starrers like Hello
Brother, Bodyguard, Maine
Pyaar Kyun Kiya, Dil Ne
Jise Apna Kahaa and Tere
Naam. The title track of
Salmans recent Prem
Ratan Dhan Paayo (PRDP)
last year won young singer
Palak Muchhal many
awards. Says he, Salman
is like my elder brother.
He also has a great sense of
music. Hes a fine human

generous he is. He has
been a guiding force.
I value his advice.
Hes choosy about

the films he signs as a

composer and says after
many years at the top
he doesnt care about
the rat race anymore. He
composed for just two
films last year - PRDP and
Sanam Teri Kasam (STK).
Unlike PRDP, STK was
a small film with a new
director and new actors.
He signed the movie only
to test if his music would
work in a movie like
that. Thankfully for him,
Kheech meri photo and
the title track did well.
Ask him to name new
talents in the business
and he says he likes Arijit
Singh, Amaal and Armaan
Malik. Ive worked with
Badshah in the song Teri

and with Yo Yo Honey
Singh in The Xpose.
Himeshs known to give
breaks to newcomers. Hes
launched singers like Palak
Muchhal, Darshan Raval,
Aman Trikha, Vineet
Singh, Akasa Singh. I like

to reinvent my music by
collaborating with new
voices, he reasons. He
reveals that this stance of
promoting new talent has
come from Salim Khan.
Salim saab says you
need to give back to the
industry. He, as a writer,
had promoted Amitabh

Khan has always promoted
new talent including me.
Himesh handpicks his
singers keeping in mind
the composition. Also, he
doesnt believe in singing
all the songs he composes
even when he enjoys a
carte blanche over it. He
didnt sing Bekhudi and
Main woh chaand in Teraa

from the same film.
He considers a singer

he says dismissing his
detractors who prefer him
as a composer rather than
as a singer. He boasts his

listeners can relate to the
feeling inherent in each

he uses a pakki bandish,
which he learnt from his
father. He says his father
was the pioneer behind
the use of electronic

film industry. My dad is
my hero, my idol. I owe
every composition to him.
Guru bina gyaan nahi hai.

n an earlier era, a
single composer
created an entire
movie album but now
times have changed.
Himesh strangely guns
for the change. Bhushan
Kumar is a visionary
who took more than
one music director in
Roy and delivered such
fabulous music. It might
not be a healthy thing
for a composer because
you have to share credit

with five others. But if

Im the producer of a film
I wouldnt mind that at
all. He doesnt live in a
bubble and believes that
every composer or singer
has a shelf life. He says
earlier, getting a break was
difficult. Today whats
difficult is to sustain. He
names piracy as the culprit
behind the demise of the
music industry. Piracy is
killing revenue. Thats why
our music industry is not
being able to reach the next
level, he opines. Right
now, whats consuming
him is the upcoming
release of his international
album @ Da Edge in 122
countries.
He cautions young
composers about being lax
and mentions they need
to form a bank of tunes in
order to survive. He also
warns them against getting
into an ego tussle with the
filmmakers. Ive a bank
of 300 tunes and Im going
to compose 300 more. Im
prepared that out of that
570 will be rejected. The
rest 30 could be liked.
Himesh composes at least
one tune a day, which
means around 30 tunes
a month. He reveals his
first song Pyaar kiya toh
darna kya was difficult
to compose because the
phrase was already an
iconic track. To take the
Mughal-E-Azam tune out
of peoples memory and
recreate something new
was a challenge. He claims
his tracks for Namastey
London were also ahead
of their time. Same is
the case with Sheeshe ki
samundar from The Xpose,
sung by Rekha Bharadwaj.
The critics loved it but the
masses remained unaware
of it. Im sure it will be
known after five years. n

Prakash Jha to finish
his staff briefing, When
Im 64 by The Beatles,
reverberates in my mind. The song
speaks of continuing to be in love
even at 64 and being passionate about
your beloved. That perhaps best sums
up Prakash Jhas unending affair with
cinema.
Legend has it that he watched

a film being shot on the streets of

Mumbai and instantly fell in love
with the filmmaking process. That
love-at-first-sight has continued
unabated all these years. And now
at 64, that love has pushed him to
try out new things. He turned actor
with Jai Gangaajal and surprised
everyone, including himself with his
nuanced performance.

him about how I overheard two local

it amusing that his one film as an

Everyone craves appreciation.
All these good wishes mean Ive
done something right. The actor
community, however, has been slow
in showing the appreciation. Jha
laughs that off, No one has tweeted

not angry or offended. I know they
are all islands into themselves.
He acknowledges it wasnt easy to
switch between the director and the
actor. I tell my actors that their life
hinges between 'Action!' and 'Cut!'.
What they are beyond that doesnt
matter. I too followed that advice
and kept the filmmaker separate
from the actor.

counters. "Any of the names you
mentioned could have done a better
job. I did it to see whether I could
equal that in some way and given
the response that Ive received, my
gamble has paid off. He reveals his
search for actors starts as he begins
writing his drafts. Sometimes, these
characters shape up differently from
what has been written. "They come
alive and want you to follow their
journey. I get excited when that
happens, he smiles. In BN Singhs
case; he kept seeing his own face
while writing the character. He
doesnt just write the script and the
dialogue but the complete character
sketches and backstories too. His
actors have it easy because through
these backstories, hes answered
most of their doubts. BN Singhs
character was an amalgamation of
various IPS and IAS officers from
the North cadre that he'd met over
the years. "Most arent corrupt but
are ambivalent towards the system

but years of mentoring actors came
in handy when he was facing the
camera. To excel what he would
expect from any other actor was his
brief to himself.
Jha has been known to offer offbeat
roles to mainstream actors like
Deepika Padukone in Aarakshan,
Katrina Kaif and Arujn Rampal
in Raajneeti. The same is true in
Priyanka Chopras case as well, who
was impressive as a straight-laced
cop in Jai Gangaajal. He smiles and
reveals that Priyanka used to pull his
leg on the sets as she was the senior
actor there. He denies writing
anything out of the ordinary for

Deepika, Katrina or Priyanka or even

his favourite, Ajay Devgn. He says
it appears so because his films dont
follow the set norms of commercial
cinema. All acting is interpretation,"
he explains. "A directors job is
to give his actor the necessary
tools to help them interpret their
roles. I help them erase self-doubts
and preconceived notions about
themselves. They came out of their
shell and became the characters.
Hes all praise for how Priyanka has
shaped up as an actor. He says her
attitude of taking on everything as
a challenge has helped her reach
where she is today. She isnt a lazy
actor and will demand another take

if she isnt satisfied. She doesnt shy

from the sheer physicality of it all.
She must have run around half of
Bhopal beating up the bad guys. But
she did it without complaint. She
kept discussing her character, trying
to improvise always.

t mustnt have been easy

controlling the crowd while
shooting with Priyanka in
Bhopal. Jha laughs at this and
says the crowd one sees in
his films are all actors. How
else would I be able to shoot so
smoothly with actors like Amitabh
Bachchan saab, Ajay (Devgn), Saif
(Ali Khan), Ranbir (Kapoor)? For

Satyagraha, we had hired some 2000

actors for the crowd scenes. During
Jai Gangaajal, there were 500 actors
in the frame sometimes.
Five months of pre-production
is the minimum for his films. His
team marks down the probable
hurdles, takes necessary permissions
and solves the logistics involved
in housing and transporting his
mammoth cast in those five months.
We shoot for 40 days at a stretch.
Every hour of that period has been
planned. The surprises are kept
to the minimum. Its like fighting
a mini-war but thanks to my able
lieutenants, I achieve my aims.
And above all, he relies on his gut

instincts to see the day through.

One develops a certain sixth sense
over the years which warns you
whether you are doing the right
things or not. I just followed my
inner voice. While Gangaajal was
inspired by real life Bhagalpur
blindings, Jai Gangaajal has bad
guys being lynched by an angry mob.
Looks like he prescribes violence as
a solution? Jha says his films reflect
the mood of society. He feels there
is a simmering anger in the people
against the system. He points out that
papers are full of news about farmer
suicides and nothing has been done
to assuage the situation. I dont
preach anarchy," he emphasises. "If
you have seen the film youd know
that Priyanka is against mob justice
and successfully puts a stop to it.
Jai Gangaajal was supposed to be
presented by Ajay Devgn but that
didnt come off. Jha cautions one
shouldnt read too much into it as
he found other financiers and says
his equation with Ajay goes beyond
filmmaking. Satsang with Ajay is
very much on. Were talking about
other projects as well. Ajay has
always been a constant in my life
and always will be. The talk veers
to whether Prakash Jha can make
normal films, free of the real-life
crust. He asks me whether by normal
I mean love stories. Romance is
very much normal but our approach
to making romantic films follows
set parameters," he opines "My next
two films wouldnt have political
undertones but would be love stories
with a difference.
He guides my eyes towards a set of
photographs adorning the walls. They
are all shot by him, depicting the
beauty of Leh and Ladakh in different
seasons. There is a love story that
I want to set in that region. The
austere beauty of the place haunts me.
Im in the process of writing the kind
of story, which will do justice to such
visuals As a parting shot, I ask him
whether hes ready to take another
turn at acting. Oh yes, he exclaims
enthusiastically. Having tasted blood
now Ive developed a craving for it.
I cant stop now even if I want too

something as dark as death. People
dont expect this in a light-hearted

that of a 25-year-old, which was
when I wrote Ek Main... He uses
the Woody-Allen-esque word

Shakun was keen to maintain

himself, why cant we make films
like that?I wonder how Woody
Allen could tell such a brilliant story
in Hannah & Her Sisters in just 1
hour 40 minutes. Thats the journey.
He believes some filmmakers are
more efficient than others. A good
director, according to him knows
how to make his audience emote and
feel the depth of a situation.
Ironically, his parents dont
always approve of his movies. They
dont get what his films are trying
to say. They mistook my cinema
for Subhash Ghai kind of films, he
laughs. For them cinema is about
dramatic scenes and performances.
My films dont have those scenes.
He cites Monsoon Wedding as
a big influence in Kapoor & Sons.
Mira Nairs refreshing wedding
comedy was the first time Shakun
saw an Indian family on screen that
felt real. I did not like the Hum
Aapke Hain Koun..! family, I did not
like the Maine Pyaar Kiya family.
I enjoyed those films thoroughly
but the families didnt seem real.
Monsoon Wedding just felt a lot more
authentic. He clarifies, Its not
that my film borrows in plot, story,
theme or structure from Monsoon
Wedding. When he met Sabrina
Diwan (writer of Monsoon Wedding)
in New York, he told her that her film
was his Bible.
He admits his growing up years
influenced the story of Kapoor &
Sons. Ive studied in Canada. I lived
away from my family who were in
Delhi. I connect with a story like
Kapoor & Sons. I believe there is a
cultural truth, which you categorise
as Indian or American. And then

there is a universal truth. So when

you see a movie like A Separation by
director Asghar Farhadi, you connect
with it, even though it comes from a
small place like Iran. But the idea is
to move beyond the cultural truth. To
tell stories that are bigger and wider,
where people connect overall.

es happy people were

able to connect with the
theme of a dysfunctional
family. He gives credit to
his actors. I could write
as much as I wanted. But if
the performances were not pitched
right it could all have fallen flat, he
states. It was always about playing
it real and fighting the temptation
to act out or to act for the camera. It
was about forgetting that the camera
existed. He believes the foundation
of the film is the script, everything
else comes after it. He explains, So
when you have a bunch of talented
actors like Rishi Kapoor, Rajat
Kapoor, Ratna Pathak-Shah, Fawad
Khan, Alia Bhatt and Sidharth
Malhotra, you give them something
meaty, something they can dive into.
My actors are people I thank for life.
As mentioned earlier, Woody
Allen has been a big influence on
his creative process. Hes glad that
like Allens films, audiences In India
have begun accepting conversationdriven movies. Theyre happy to
watch two people talk. If you pick
a film like Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, the
plot is wafer thin. But its just the
conversations of two people that
makes that film tick. Which is why
I rank films like Lost In Translation,
Before Sunrise and Annie Hall
above others. Im glad people in
our country are accepting dialogue
driven, conversational films.

rumour mills from buzzing.
They run on auto mode,
continuing to churn out one
spicy story after the other.
If tabloids thrive on them, television relies on
them for their TRPs. Whos dating whom? Whos
cheating on whom? Whos breaking up with
whom? Who got sacked out of a film? Who
grabbed whose role? The list is endless Not
long ago, tabloids and websites went berserk
after finding a picture of a girl with Ranbir
Kapoor. Most of the websites termed the
mystery girl as Ranbirs new girlfriend
and even went on to say how he has
moved on from Katrina Kaif. The fact,
however, was far from the speculation.
The mystery girl was just a Filmfare
journalist who bumped into the star
and clicked a picture with him. Thats
how bizarre rumours can be.
Recently, there were rumours
that I was doing Baadshaho
Taking our cue from this incident,
with Ajay Devgn and the
we asked the stars about the
remake of Sadma. Its bizarre.
strangest rumour they have heard
Ive no idea where these
about themselves...
rumours came from. If theres

KAREENA
KAPOOR KHAN

a movie Im doing, I will

announce it.

HAS IT
ARJUN
KAPOOR

It was said that I provoked

Ranveer Singh on the set of
Gunday and that we had a
spat. It was believed that we
didnt see eye to eye with
each other after a point of
time. And that the whole
bromance was just a big
drama, which we were putting out for the world.

AYUSHMANN
KHURRANA
SONAM
KAPOOR
I recently read a report,
which stated that after
the success of Neerja
I wasnt getting any work.
It was also said that I was
actually worried and upset
about the situation.

ALIA
BHATT
The most
bizarre thing
I read about
myself was that
Im Mahesh
Bhatt and Pooja
Bhatts daughter.
I was shocked
and found it
damn gross.

When I was shooting for

Bewakoofiyaan in 2013, a
report said that I had died
in a freak skiing accident in
Switzerland. Ironically, Ive never
been to Switzerland, even
though Im managed by Yash
Raj Films. I took this rumour
sportingly but my family and
friends were worried and
clearly not amused.

VARUN DHAWAN
The weirdest rumour I heard
was that I made Shraddha
Kapoor cry because I shouted at
her once. The truth is that
she yells at me all the time.

SIDHARTH
MALHOTRA
ONE RANDOM RUMOUR
IS THAT IM FROM SURAT.
THE OTHER ONE IS THAT
IM RELATED TO MANISH
MALHOTRA. SOME EVEN
SUGGEST IVE COME
FROM A TELEVISION
BACKGROUND.

SPOT POLL

JACQUELINE
FERNANDEZ
That Im dating
Jackie Chan.
Hilarious!

The news
was that
while
I was inside
a spa, it
had got
demolished
from the
outside.
This was
printed in
the Mumbai
newspapers
while I was
shooting in
Chandigarh.

ATHIYA
SHETTY
THE STRANGEST
RUMOUR I HEARD
ABOUT MYSELF WAS
THAT I HAD SIGNED
A NO DATING
CLAUSE WITH
SOORAJ PANCHOLI
WHILE WE WERE
SHOOTING HERO.

RAJKUMMAR RAO
Apparently, people believe Im
demanding on the set and that I ask to
see the final cut of my films. Its untrue.
In fact, those close to me say that Im
the most chilled out on the set.

PREITY ZINTA
There have been
many rumours like
I had converted to
Islam, that I had
gone bankrupt,
that when my
dad passed
away, I had to
support my
family... and
such things.

FAWAD
KHAN
I keep hearing
and reading that
I was a child
model and that
I started modelling
at the age of 13.

KRITI SANON
You are rumoured to have refused a film,
which actually you were never offered or
youve been replaced in a film that you
were never part of in the first place.

NARGIS FAKHRI
THE FACT THAT I WAS
ALL SET TO TURN
LESBIAN WAS JUST SO
INSANE AND WEIRD.
I WAS SHOCKED
HOW PEOPLE CAN
MAKE SUCH BIZARRE
HEADLINES.

PARINEETI
CHOPRA
The rumour was that I had
paid Aditya Chopra to cast
me in Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl.
The person who wrote the
story must have been crazy
to actually write that a
nobody like me then, giving
money to Aditya Chopra to
make a film for her! Also,
even when Ive met a person
just for 10 minutes, the next
day, I get to read about my
linkup with him.

SPOT POLL

SHARMAN
JOSHI
FOUR TO FIVE YEARS
AGO, I WAS DECLARED
DEAD ON FACEBOOK
AND TWITTER. PEOPLE
EVEN CALLED TO CHECK
IF THAT WAS TRUE.

ADITI RAO
HYDARI
That Im a
descendent
of Audrey
Hepburn. And
its all because
of the picture
seen below.

GULSHAN
DEVAIAH
TAAPSEE
PANNU
I had barely begun my
career when people got me
married and said that I was
leaving the industry.

RICHA CHADHA
I HEARD THAT I AM AN NRI.
NOW, THAT WAS FUNNY.

When Kalki Koechlin and

Anurag Kahyap were going
through their breakup, I was
linked up with Kalki. It was
WITH
because we showed up at
INPUTS
FROM
events together, hung out a
SUMAN
lot and even went for
SHARMA
holidays together. We still do
AND
that. But you cant imply that
ASHWINI
were involved.

NOSTALGIA

TOP WORD
OF
THE

DEVESH SHARMA PROFILES THE PROLIFIC LYRICIST JAVED AKHTAR

e kahan aa gaye
hum from Silsila
(1981) is one of
the most romantic
Hindi film songs
ever. The free verse
incorporated in the song,
Main aur meri tanhai,
aksar yeh baatein karte
hain heard in Amitabh
Bachchans rich baritone,
takes it to a new level.
The lines burn with the
pathos of unrequited love,
Majboor yeh halaat idhar
bhi hai, udhar bhi/tanhai
ki ek raat idhar bhi hai,
udhar bhi and say it all.
You can close your eyes
and experience the pain.
And to think that Javed
Akhtar became a lyricist
purely by accident. Yash
Chopra, who mostly
worked with Sahir
Ludhianvi, was looking
for a worthy replacement
after Sahirs death in 1980.
Chopra had worked with
the Salim-Javed team of
scenarists since Deewaar
(1975) and knew that
Akhtar dabbled in poetry.
He requested him to try his
hand at writing the lyrics
for his film revolving
around an extramarital

affair. The rest is history.

It was not as if Aktar
was impervious to poetry.
In fact, he belongs to a
family of poets ranging
back seven generations.
His father, Jan Nisar
Akhtar, was a noted
poet/lyricist. Legendary
Urdu poet Majaz was his
maternal uncle and the
works of his grandfather,
Muzter Khairabadi, are
considered as a milestone
in Urdu poetry. A young
Akhtar grew up reading
the choicest poetry in a
house full of books and
knew hundreds of couplets
by heart. He showed
an inclination towards

NOSTALGIA
writing poetry since
an early age and began
winning competitions,
representing his school
and later college.
Why he carved out a
career as a scenarist and
not a lyricist is a mystery.
Apparently, he had a
deep rooted angst against
his father for marrying
again and didnt reach a
rapprochement with him
till his last days. That
resentment reportedly led
him to forsake poetry. He
picked up the pen again
after his fathers demise in
1976 to affect a catharsis
and continue his lineage.

ilsila was full of

odes to love like Ye
kahan aa gaye hum,
Dekha ek khwab
and the imagery
ridden Neela
aasman kho gaya. Saath
Saath (1982) was parallel
cinema, an urban romance
rooted in reality. Akhtars
lyrics reflected the pain
of relationships dying in
the battle for survival.
Success of songs like Pyar
mujhse jo kiya tumne, Yeh
tera ghar yeh mera ghar
and Tumko dekha toh yeh
khayal aaya ensured he
was no one-hit wonder.
The songs were sung by
Jagjit Singh and Chitra
Singh and composed
by Kuldeep Singh. A
lifelong friendship
between the ghazal singer
and the lyricist led to
collaborations for two
private albums Silsilay
(1998) and Soz (2002).
The 80s can be said
to be journeyman years
for the lyricist. He used
his acumen of writing
scenes to pen songs that
took the story forward.
Songs like Zindagi aa raha
hoon main from Mashaal

(1984) or the infectious

Mammayea kero kero
kero mama (Arjun,1985)
are examples of that.
With Arjun, he formed
a fruitful partnership
with RD Burman. Saagar
(1985) composed by RD
was the comeback film of
Dimple Kapadia. Javed
produced memorable
songs like Chehra hai ya
chand khila hai, Sagar
kinare, Jaane do na, and
Sach mere yaar hai for
this love story. Later, 1942:
A Love Story won him
his first Filmfare Award
as a lyricist for the song
Ek ladki ko dekha to aisa
laga. Sung by Kumar Sanu,
the song did away with the
traditional mukhda-antara
method, having just one

to aisa laga technically
as the mukhda. The rest
of the lines served as the
antaras. Similarly, in1988,
he experimented with the
song Breathless, written
for Shankar Mahadevans
album of the same name.
The six-minute song
flowed like free verse,
without the demarcation of
mukhda and antara.
The 90s saw him score
some of the most romantic
songs of his career in
Papa Kehte Hain (1996).
A small-budget film, it

soulful lyrics and stirring

music by Rajesh Roshan.
Ghar se nikalte hi got
Akhtar his second Filmfare
trophy. Other memorable
songs were Pyar mein
hota hai kya jaadu, Pehle
pyar ka pehla gham and
Mujhse naraaz ho to ho
jao. Border (1997), a war
film by JP Dutta, held the
message of peace. Akhtars
Mere dushman, mere
bhai sung by Hariharan,
highlighted that. Sandese
aate hain spoke about the
homesickness of soldiers.
The album won him yet
another Filmfare trophy.

The new millennium

saw him scoring high
with Refugee (2000). His
collaboration with Anu
Malik produced such gems
as Panchi nadiya pawan
ke jhonke, Aisa lagta hai
and Mere humsafar. It won
him a Filmfare Award too.
Lagaan (2001) saw him
team up with AR Rahman
for the first time. The
film was set in the 19th
century and required the
lyricist to approximate the
language of that era. The
rain song, Ghanan ghanan,
the bhajan O palanhare,
the fun songs, O re chori

and Radha kaise na jale

or the team building
anthem, Mitwa, all had
a colloquial flavour. He
made a jump from period
to contemporary with
son Farhan Akhtars Dil
Chahta Hai, where
frothy lyrics like Dil
chahta hai, Koi kahe
kehta rahe and
Woh ladki
hai kahan
showcased
his synergy
with the
youth.

ention must
also be made of
Shyam Benegals
Zubeida (2001),
where Javed came
together with AR
Rahman once again. In
the ill-fated love story of
an actress-turned royalty,
Javeds pen covered
the entire spectrum of
emotions. Mehendi hai
rachne wali spoke of
bridal dreams, Dheeme
dheeme gaaon of the
first flush of love, Mehki
mehki hai raahein of
togetherness and So gaye
hain kho gaye hain the
most haunting was all
about dreams succumbing
to reality.
The OSTs of Main Hoon
Na (2004) and Kal Ho Naa
Ho (2003) were fresh off
the farm too. Songs like
Tumhe jo maine dekha,
Chale jaise hawaein, as
well as the title song from
the former and Har ghadi
badal rahi hai, Mahi ve,
Its the time to disco,
Kucch to hua hai from the
latter were chartbusters.
He composed to late

Madan Mohans tunes for

the cross-border romance
Veer-Zaara (2004) and
gave gems like Tere liye,
Do pal and Main yahan
hoon. Swades (2004) saw
him in a sombre mood
with songs like the bhajan
Pal pal hai bhari, the road
song, Yun hi chala chal
rahi and the inspirational
Yeh tara woh tara. In
Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna
(2006), he had the crowd
grooving to Rock n roll
soniye and Wheres the
party tonight.
Trust him to coin new
terms, which he did
with Dard-e-disco in Om
Shanti Om (2007) , giving
a modern twist
to the ghazal.
His classical
leanings came
into play in
Jodhaa Akbar
(2008), where
he lent the 16th
century ethos into
the lyrics of this
period romance. The

pick of the lot.
Wake up Sid (2009)
saw him going into the
Sufi mould with Iktara. In
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
(2011), he chalked out his
philosophy of life in the
poem Toh zinda ho tum.
Songs like Dil dhadakne
do and Senorita were
crowd favourites too.
In Dil Dhadakne Do
(2015) his Girls like

appreciation. Very
much connected to

conquer more fans
with upcoming films

HOT
STUFF

Alia Bhatt
seems to be
a rare blend
of effervescence, spunk
and talent. And while many
may liken her to Kareena
Kapoor Khan, she stands
out as her own person, eyecatching whenever shes on
screen. Be it in the intense
Highway or the fun-loving
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.

Even in Shaandaar, its

hard not to fall in love with
her character. It came as
a pleasant surprise that
someone still so nascent in
her craft, she could analyse
her performances with such
insight in her latest interview
(March 23). Shes certainly
in demand and given her fine
act in Kapoor & Sons, shes
well on her way to being
number one.

OH MY FAWAD!

Alia Bhatt

Theres no doubt
that Fawad Khan
is a talented
actor and his
interview (March
23) only shows us
the man behind the
magic. The interview
also gave information
about his growing years.
His candid take on work
and his diabetic condition

Fawad Khan

was refreshing to read.

Moreover, he seems much
more comfortable in the
industry since his debut
Khoobsurat. Even in his first
film, he showed the barrage
of talent he possessed. With
his nuanced performance in
Shakun Batra's Kapoor &
Sons, he only took it several
notches higher. He has left
us craving for more.

The extensive travel feature

with Sonakshi Sinha gave
us an enticing view of not
only Sydney but also an
insight into Sonakshis
hobbies and passions. We
see Sydney through a gaze
beyond travelogues thanks
to her love for travel. She
looked completely at ease
surrounded by all forms
of nature. It may look like
all play and no work for
Sonakshi but this selfproclaimed water baby has
earned her leisure. We can't
wait to see her back in action
with films like Akira and Force

RAH-RAH RAJKUMMAR
Rajkummar Rao's interview
(March 23) certainly makes
us sit up and take notice
of him. His candour when
it comes to the hypocritical
stance of society and the
Censor Board towards his
latest film Aligarh, voices
concerns that most of us
have but dont have the
courage to admit.

Manoj Bajpayee is a
stellar actor. His recent

exactly that. Heres hoping

Your Last Word, Requiem

HOME AFFAIRS
The dysfunctional family in Kapoor & Sons seems to have touched hearts

KAPOOR & SONS

FAMILY NO. 1

Welcome to what you could call, Karan

Johars version of Dil Dhadakne Do meets
Monsoon Wedding. The film has top-notch
performances. Rishi Kapoor transforms
into a nonagenarian with the help of heavy
prosthetics and the right body language.
Rajat Kapoor, a fine actor, goes through the
role effortlessly and complementing him is
Ratna Pathak Shah. Nursing a dark secret
of his own, Fawad Khan as Rahul is the
catalyst. Fawads performance competes
with Rishis in terms of impact and
brilliance. Sidharth Malhotra is earnest and
Alia Bhatt dazzles as usual. Director Shakun
Batras Kapoor & Sons reinvents the family
film genre.
Sumeet Nadkarni, Mumbai

GOOD EFFORT
Kapoor & Sons is a fresh and novel attempt at
family drama. The film, produced by Dharma
Productions, doesnt have any resemblance to
the fluffy filmmaking style of producer Karan
Johar. The most attractive part of the film, apart
from Fawad Khan, is the way homosexuality has
been handled. The movie talks about relevant
themes using the relatable Kapoor characters as
a medium. A whimsical grandfather obsessed with
dying (Rishi Kapoor), his weary accountant son
(Rajat Kapoor) and nagging wife (Ratna Pathak
Shah) are the strength of this film. Avoiding
clichs, Kapoor & Sons brings maturity and
complexity to a tested and tried genre.
Priyadarshan Babu, Mumbai

FAMILY DRAMA AT ITS BEST

Its high time Indians acknowledge the fact that
all families are dysfunctional, in some degree.

With Kapoor & Sons you witness the same. Every
person in the audience is able to identify with
family intrigue as its played out in the film. Not
just their dysfunctions and unresolved issues, the
movie showcases the conflicts and the ultimate
reconciliation.
Suneha Gupta, New Delhi

FAMILY GAME
Kapoor & Sons revolves around a contemporary
but conflicting family. Alia Bhatt, Fawad Khan
and Sidharth Malhotra have done an immaculate
job portraying their young characters. Ratna
Pathak Shah and Rajat Kapoor keep the audience
engaged with their constant marital bickering and
emotional friction. Rishi Kapoor, through his lively
attitude and optimism, steals the show. Watch
this movie with your family to accept and love it
with all its flaws.

superlative performances. Shakun weaves magic
into the interpersonal conflicts and even makes
the most mundane confrontations in a family

volatile chemistry with Rajat Kapoor is flawless.
Rishi Kapoor, under layers of make-up, dazzles
with his spunk and naughtiness. Fawad Khan
is fabulously sensitive and at ease playing the
perfect son with a dark secret. Sidharth Malhotra
and Alia Bhatt too are brilliant.

BOX-OFFICE

GENDER BENDER

Ki & Ka reverses the existing gender roles and makes a case for partners finding their own calling in
a relationship. If a man is a better caregiver then he should revel in being a homemaker. The idea
seems to have struck a chord and the film is getting good word-of-mouth support. Rocky Handsome
didnt generate much impact despite the Hollywoodish action scenes. It can seek solace from the fact
Batman Vs Superman too nosedived.

LAST WORD BY JITESH PILLAAI

CRICKETING GODS

he trailer of
Azhar has aired
and Emraan
Hashmi seems
to be in cracking
form. Hes got
the playing
shots, the swaggers, the
mannerisms down pat.
You almost believe youre
watching one of the most
wristy players, Mohmmed
Azharuddin, in action.
Azhar was one of the
most successful players
and captains India has
produced. His Test batting
average of 45.03 stands
there with the best. Hes
made more Test hundreds
22, than half centuries
21. His record of winning
14 Test matches was the
best by an Indian captain
then. It was bettered
later by Sourav Ganguly,
who had 21 Test wins as
captain.
Azhar was the true
cricketing superstar,
leading a glamorous life,
linked with hot starlets
and seemingly blessed
by the gods to change the
nature of an innings by
the flick of his wrists. He
was also an agile fielder,
taking 105 catches in the

Emraan Hashmi and Mohmmed Azharuddin

99 tests he played. But

one thing he let slip was
his alleged involvement
with bookies. Hanse
Cronje, the South African
cricketer accused of fixing
matches, named Azhar as
one of his accomplices.
That led to shitstorm, the
marks of which are yet
found on the ceiling. The
very fans who believed he
was God now hate saying
his name aloud. No one
rose so high and fell so
low as Azhar in Indian
cricket. And we hope the
upcoming film helps lay

some ghosts to rest.

MS Dhoni is another
cricketer who can lay
claim to being Indias most
successful captain. He
has led India to victory in
the 2007 inaugural World
Twenty20 championship
and in the 2011 World Cup
finals. His 294 dismissals
as a wicketkeeper in Tests
are the most by an Indian.
Then, hes also known as
one of the best finishers
in the game, leading his
team to many nail-biting
victories through the
strength of his batting.

Earlier in his career,

Dhoni was known for his
Helicopter Shot, a straight
to the heavens sixer he
perfected. Now, he controls
his aggression and plays
according to the situation.
Dhoni too is known
for his proximity to
Bollywood stars John
Abraham is a personal
friend and his penchant
for fast bikes. So far, hes
been free of any betting
taint and had has led
a more sedate life than
Azhar. His journey has
been that of a grassroots
cricketer in Jharkhand,
coming up through sheer
grit and determination and
even serving a stint in the
Railways as a TTE. Dhoni
came in at an era where
cricketing legends like
Sourav Ganguly, Sachin
Tendulkar, Virender
Sehwag and Rahul Dravid
were at their peak. The
fact that hes managed to
carve a niche despite their
presence speaks of his iron
will. Lets hope Sushant
Singh Rajput proves equal
to playing Mr Cool on
n
screen
