You can have remote access to databases from all other released platforms.
This requires a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) with Version 6.
Ensure that you have installed the Java runtime environment (32-bit/64-bit) that is suitable for your Database
Studio. Use the 32-bit Java runtime environment only if you use Database Studio in the 32-bit variant. For
more details about the Java runtime environment, see the section Using a specific Java runtime environment
at the end of this SAP Note.
The latest version of the SAP MaxDB Database Studio is available on SAP Service Marketplace. With this
SAP MaxDB Database Studio, you can log on to the SAP MaxDB databases as of Version 7.6 and use the
Database Studio function.
New functions of the SAP MaxDB-/liveCache database software in the Support Packages cannot be
supported by an older Database Studio version. Therefore, you should always use the current version of the
Database Studio if possible. As of Database Studio Version 7.9.08, the use of backup tools from other
providers has been implemented. Hot standby systems are supported, too.
We recommend that you close any other programs that are running before you install SAP MaxDB Database
Studio.
CAUTION:
Do not install Database Studio on computers that run in a Microsoft Cluster environment (MSCS).
In particular, the following is true if you have installed the database with Version 7.7 or earlier: The
descriptions for further software updates to the database become invalid as a result of the installation of
Database Studio 7.9, and there are error situations in SAPINST during upgrades. This happens because
Version 7.9 of Database Studio introduces the isolated installation (see SAP Note 1727123 as well).
Information about Database Studio Version 7.9
If you currently use Database Studio 7.8, you have saved local landscape data in the UMDB service. For the
management of landscape data, Database Studio 7.9 uses separate encrypted files for each user instead of
using the UMDB service.
When it is first used, Database Studio 7.9 transfers the data from the UMDB service to the new management
function on request.
Call the Installation Manager SDBSETUP and perform an upgrade of the Database Studio. Start Database
Studio in Run as administrator mode. After the first start, Database Studio 7.9 provides the option to transfer
the landscape data:
The user management system on this server is obsolete and will be replaced by a new user management
now.
Shall the content of the user management system be taken over by the new user management?
If you choose Yes, the system transfers the landscape data and terminates the UMDB service.
If you choose Cancel, the landscape data remains in the UMDB service, and you can perform the
change at a later time.
If you choose No, the system deletes the UMDB service without transferring the landscape data.

After reading the landscape data, the system prompts you to define the secure storage password.
Secure storage is an Eclipse function. Database Studio uses secure storage to save the key with which the
landscape data is then stored in the user-specific folder in an encrypted manner.
When secure storage is called first, you define the personal password and some confirmation prompts for the
case that you forget the password. Every time you call Database Studio after this, the system prompts you to
enter the secure storage password.
After a successful storage of the landscape data, Database Studio reports the following: User management
system was switched successfully.
Once the UMDB service has been deactivated, you require only the Run as administrator call option when
you call Database Studio to create or delete a database using Database Studio.
Information about the use of Database Studio 7.9 in WTS environments
Replacing the UMDB service with the user-specific files enables you to use Database Studio in WTS
environments without problems. For the normal database administration activities, you no longer require
administration rights when calling Database Studio. In addition, it is ensured that all users of Database Studio
keep their own landscape data in files that are encrypted with their own personal key on a server (or in a
WTS server environment) separate from all other users.
Solution
1. Close any running SAP MaxDB Database Studio.
2. Switch to a temporary directory (for example, C:\Temp (Microsoft Windows) or /tmp/inst (Linux)).
3. Log on to the SAP Software Distribution Center (SWDC).
Proceed as described in SAP Note 1672252.
4. Download the corresponding file for your system requirements (OS: operating system),
MAXDBSTDDSK<build>.SAR, in the version you want from the following download area:
-> Database Patches
-> MAXDB GUI COMPONENTS/TOOLS
-> MAXDB DATABASE STUDIO <version>
-><os>
5. The SAPCAR unpacking tool SAPCARis also located in the SAP Software Center, as described in
SAP Note 212876.
6. Log off from the SWDC.
7. Unpack the SAR package in the temporary directory:

CAUTION:
1. During the installation in 64-bit Microsoft Windows systems, ensure that the following registry key is set
:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Windows \ SystemDirectory
Value: "%SystemRoot%\system32" (type REG_EXPAND_SZ)
If the correct registry key assignment is not observed, the following error can occur during the
installation (see SDBSETUPMsg<...>.log):
ERR: Cannot open "C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\drivers\etc\services" to write: No such file or directory
or
ERR: Cannot open "<SystemDirectory>\drivers\etc\services" to write: No such file or directory
2. Termination of installation without error message:
For each installation, the installation manager writes a log to a file with the following file name:
SDBSETUPMsg<number>.log. On Microsoft Windows systems, the file is under C:\Users\<user_name
>\AppData\Local\Temp or underc:\sapdb\data\wrkand /sapdb/data/wrk in Linux if the standard paths
were used during the installation.
3. To start SAP MaxDB Database Studio, you must be in the installation directory. In Microsoft Windows,
this is already set in the relevant link.
4. When must I call Database Studio with administrator rights (Run as Administrator)?
a. For the first start of Database Studio Version 7.8, you require ADMIN rights to create the user
management database (UMDB).
You must therefore start Database Studio 7.8 in Run as administrator mode when you start it the
first time after the installation or upgrade. To do so, right-click the Database Studio icon to open
the context menu and choose Run as administrator (PTS 1217459).
b. You want to migrate Database Studio from 7.8 to 7.9.
c. When you create or delete a database with Database Studio 7.9
Information for Linux
Call Database Studio from the installation directory:
- cd /sapdb/clients/DatabaseStudio
- ./dbstudio
