48% DISAPPROVE OF CALGARY POLICE SERVICE

September 28, 2016 (Ottawa, ON) A new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll nds mixed reviews for the Calgary
Police Service with 48%, almost one in two Calgarians disapproving of the police forces performance. With
823 Calgarians surveyed on September 7th, the Mainstreet/Postmedia Poll has a margin of error of +/3.41%, 19 times out of 20 .
Calgarians have a negative view about the Calgary Police Service with 39% approval compared to 48%
disapproval, said Quito Maggi, President of Mainstreet Research. These numbers may concern some but
there is a silver lining: strong approval is at 22% compared to strong disapproval at just 11%, this may better
reveal the public mood - a lot of people are in the middle. In addition, almost 4 in 10 people said their
opinion about CPS had improved in the past year compared to just 25% who said it had diminished.
It also appears there is condence in the CPS integrity with a majority saying they are condent they
would be treated fairly if they were the subject of an investigation. 58% were condent in that, with just 33%
indicating non condence. Again, when we compare those who said they were very condent (17%) with
those who said they were not at all condent (22%), a dierent picture emerges that shows polarized
opinions.
There is similar condence in terms of accountability, with a majority indicating they believe CPS ocers
involved in misconduct are held accountable. 51% said they agreed with just 29% disagreeing with 2 in 10
saying they were unsure.
Most people (49%) also believe that CPS ocers require better training to handle high stress situations,
with just 11% saying they did not require better training. Opinions on this matter may change with more
information or awareness as a signicant number of Calgarians weren't sure about training
requirements(42%).
The one issue that most Calgarians did support across the board with signicant majorities was the use of
body cameras on CPS ocers. 61% strongly approved of ocers requiring body cameras with another 11%
somehwat approving. This is a very substantial number when compared to just 14% disapproval, including
just 5% strongly disapproving of body cameras, nished Maggi.
