HOW TO CONDUCT AN EXPERIMENT

6 STEPS
1) PREVIOUS RESEARCH
- It is important for having previous research which is having same
characteristics with our research. Previous research will gives us ideas and
direction to do our research. Other than that, it can inspires us to do our
best and more deep in our research.
2) HYPOTHESIS
- In making hypothesis, we must ask ourself specific questions such as
What are we going to know or what are we going to investigate in this
research?. This is because we have to state the Independent variables
(IV), which involves two or more level as it is will affects the dependent
variable (DV). Dependent variable is a variable that will give responses
due to the changes in IV. We also have to explain the operational
definition of DV. A clear hypothesis should have the IV and DV. For
example, Background noise(IV) affect concentration(DV). The example of
IV are with rock music played and without music / silent.
3) METHOD
- Method should explains the way we are going to set up our experiment.
It is about what and how. We must have two different groups, which are
experimental group and non-experimental group (control group). In
experimental group, researcher will manipulate the IV to know the cause
and effects whereas in non-experimental group, researcher does not
manipulate the IV. The sample must can generalized the population. It is
better to choose sample randomly. We also must beware of the
confounding variable. Confounding variable is variable that can give bias
effect to the DV. Besides, we need to provide consent form for the
participants. In the consent form, we must state and explain the
introduction, researchers information, objectives and procedures of the
research. It must cointain the signature of researcher and the participant if
he/she is willing to participate. One more important thing is stating that
the research is confidential.
4) ACTION
- During experiment, we must conduct it in appropriate way and in friendly
manner. In order to make the experiment success, we must do it
according to the procedures. If we are doing research by group, we should
have task division such as observing the response of participants and

recording the data. Most importantly, we should enjoy doing the

experiment and make sure we follow the ethical in conducting
experiment.
5) ANALYZE DATA
- When analysing the data, we must use the right statistical test based on
our research objectives. For example, If we are investigating on
relationship, the best and right statistical test is correlation. We must
know to record the data in categories whether it is nominal or ordinal
versus ratio or interval data. There are three possible outcomes in the
result. First is signifance that you predicted. Second, signifance that you
did not predict. The third is no significance. It is not compulsory to get
same results as what we have predict earlier. All results are significance.
6) SHARE YOUR FINDINGS
- At the end, it is important for us to do the research reports to share it to
the others. We will know whether the results that we gain is the same as
the previous researchs. We can compare and contrast it. Most importantly,
we know the strengths and weaknesses of our research, so we or other
researchers can improve it in the future research.
