ASS NO.

6
HELICAL SPRING

SUBMISSION DATE:

Oct 3 & 4, 2016

1. Two identical arranged in series as shown support a load P=50KN. The upper spring has 24
turns of 20-mm-diameter wire on a mean diameter of 250mm. The lower spring consists of
18 turns of 10-mm-diameter wire on a mean diameter of 140mm. Determine the shearing
stress in the springs and the total elongation of the assembly. Use Approximate Formula
and G=83GPa.

2. A rigid bar, pinned at point O, is supported by two identical springs as shown. Each spring
consists of 25 turns of in diameter wire having a mean diameter of 6 in. determine the
maximum load W that may be supported if the shearing stress in the springs is limited to
20Ksi. Use Exact Formula.

3. A rigid bar, hinged at one end, is supported by two springs as shown. Steel spring which is
connected to the end of the bar consists of 20 turns of 10mm wire having a mean dimeter
of 150mm. Bronze spring which is 2 meters away from the hinged support consists of 20
turns of 8mm wire having a mean radius of 50mm. Compute the load W that can be
supported by the system if the allowable stress is not to exceed 30MPa. The modulus of
rigidity for steel and bronze are 83GPa and 42 Gpa respectively. Use Approximate Formula.
