Tutorial-I

1) the moment of inertia of an aeroplane air screw is 20kgm2 and the speed of the rotation
1000rpm clockwise when view from front.the speed of flight is 200kmph.find the gyroscopic
reaction of the air screw on the aeroplane when it makes a left handed turn on path of 150 m
radius.
2) A tangent cam with a base circle dia of 50mm operates a roller follower 20mm in dia. The line
of the stroke of the follower passes through the axis of the cam. The angle between the faces of
the cam is 60 ,speed of the cam shaft 200 rpm and the lift if the follower 15 mm calculate

3) A four wheeled trolley car of total mass 2000kg running on rails of 1m gauge,rounds a curve
of 25 m radius at 40kn/hr .the track is banked at 10.the wheel have an external diameter of 0.6 m
and each pair with axle has a mass of 200kg. the radius of gyration for each pair is 250 mm.the
C.G is o.95m aboe the ground.determine the pressure on each rail allowing for centrifugal force
and gyroscopic couple actions.
4) A cam is to be designed for a knife edge follower with the following data :
(a) Cam lift = 40 mm during 60 of cam rotation with SHM
(b) Dwell for the next 45
(c) During the next 90 of cam rotation, the follower returns to its original position with
SHM
(d) Dwell during the remaining 165 .draw the profile of cam when the line of the stroke
of the follower passes through the axis of cam shaft. The radius of the base circle of
the cam is 50 mm. Determine the maximum velocity and acceleration of the follower
during its ascent and desent, if the cam rotates at 300 r.p.m.

1. An epicyclic gear train consists of a sun wheelS, a stationary internal gear E and three
identical planet wheels P carried on a star- shaped planet carrier C. The size of different
toothed wheels are such that the planet carrier C rotates at 1/5th of the speed of the
sunwheel S. The minimum number of teeth on any wheel is 16. The driving torque on the
sun wheel is 100 N-m. Determine : 1. Number of teeth on different wheels of the train,
and 2. torque necessary to keep the internal gear stationary.

(ii)the length of path of contact (iii) the maximum velocity of sliding of teeth on either side of
pitch point
4) Fig shows, an epicyclic gear train with the following data:
A has 40 teeths external (fixed gear ) B has 80 teeths internal C-D compound wheel having 20
and 50 teeths respectively. E-F compound wheel having 20 and 40 teeths and G has 90
teeths.The arm runs at 100 rpm clockwise, Determine speed of gears C, E, B.

1. The following data applied to an outside cylinder uncoupled locomotive:


Mass of rotating parts per cylinder = 360 kg
Mass of reciprocating parts per cylinder = 300 kg
Angle b/w cranks =90 ; Crank radius = 0.3 m ;cylinder centers = 1.75 m
Radius of balance masses = 0.75m ,wheel centers = 145m
If whole of rotating and 2-3s of reciprocating parts are to be balanced in planes of the
driving wheels, Find
(a) Magnitude and angular positions of balanced masses
(b) Speed in kilometers per hour at which the wheel will lift off the rails when the load on
each driving wheel is 30 KN and the diameter of tread of driving wheels is 1.8
in,Swaying couple arrived at in(b) above
2. The mass of an electric motor is 120 kg and it runs at 1500 rpm .the armature mass is 35 kg
and C.G lies .05 mm from the axis of rotation. The motor is mounted on five springs of
negligible damping so that the force transmitted is one-eleventh of impressed force. Assume that
the mass of motor is equally distributed among five springs Determine (i) stiffness of each
spring(ii) Dynamic force transmitted to the base at the operating speed (iii) Natural frequency of
system
3) A body of mass of 50 kg is supported by an elastic structure of stiffness 10KN/m. The motion of the
body is controlled by a dashpot such that the amplitude of vibration decreases to one teeth of its original
value after two complete vibrations. Determine:
(i) The damping force 1 m/s
(ii) The damping ratio
(iii) The natural frequency of vibration
4) A shaft has three eccentricities , each 75 mm diameter and 25 mm thick, machined in one piece with
the shaft. The central planes of the eccentric are 60 mm apart. The distance from the axis of centers of
rotation are 12mm ,18 mm and 12 mm and their angular positions are 120 .The density of metal is 7000
kg/m3.Find the amount of out of balance force and couple at 6000 rpm.If the shaft is balanced by adding
two masses at a radius of 75 mm and at a distances of 100 mm from central plane of middle ecentrisic,
find the amount of masses and their angular positions.
