UNIT TEST-1

1. (a) One litter of crude oil weighs 9.6 N. Calculate its Specific weight, density and
specific weight.
(b) The Velocity Distribution for flow over a flat plate is given by u= (2/3)y -y 2 Where u is the
point velocity in meter per second at a distance y meter above the plate. Determine the shear
stress at y=0 and y=15 cm. Assume dynamic viscosity as 8.63 poises
2. A pipe of 300 mm diameter inclined at 30 to the horizontal is carrying gasoline (specific gravity
=0.82). A Venturimeter is fitted in the pipe to find out the flow rate whose throat diameter is 150 mm.
The throat is 1.2 m from the entrance along its length. The pressure gauges fitted to the Venturimeter
read 140 kN/m2 and 80 kN/m2 respectively. Find out the coefficient of discharge of Venturimeter if
the flow is 0.20 m3/s.
3. Derive continuity equation from basic principles.
4. A 30cm diameter pipe, conveying water, branches into two pipes of diameter 20cm and 15cm
respectively. If the average velocity in the 30cmdiameter of pipe is2.5m/s, find the discharge of the
pipe. Also determine the velocity in 15cm pipe if the average velocity in 20cm diameter pipe is 2m/s
5. A pipe of diameter 400mm carries water at a velocity of 25m/s. The pressures at the points A and B are
given as 29.43N/cm2 and 22.563 N/cm2 respectively while the datum head at A and B are 28m and
30m. Find the loss of head between A and B
