Stop & Shop Update: Parking Under Review

Now that the exhaust has

begun to clear, the towing
situation at the Stop & Shop
parking lot is coming into focus.
As reported in the Rockaway Times and other outlets, complaints about cars
being aggressively towed out
of the lot have risen dramatically in the last few months.
Community outrage, calls for
boycotts and other measures
quickly followed.
As we found out, part of the
problem was finding out who
actually had control of the
lot, and who held the actual
contract with Arvernes B&M
Towing. Benenson Realty,
listed as the property owner,
and the Stop & Shop corporation were called.
In an update to the original
story a spokesperson for Benenson contacted The Rockaway Times and said the parking lot is controlled by Stop
& Shop. The entire property

policies associated with the

Shop. So questions, the Benenson representative said,
should be directed to them.
The spokesperson also advised that "Benenson Capital

has notified Stop & Shop that
their policy is creating community concern, and they
have confirmed that the pol-
icy and towing contract are

theirs."
We also reached out to Stop
& Shops corporate offices,
and received a return call from
Director of Marketing and External Communications Jim
Keenoy. He said the companys Real Estate and Asset
Management divisions were
looking into the situation.
We did more follow up,
Keenoy was able to report in
response to RTs next call.
We are tracking down the
routing of the parking lot
contract through our company. Were evaluating it and we
are looking to make changes.
While the particulars of
those changes are yet to be
decided, he did say that We
take these things seriously.
At the end of the day, we take
the feedback, good and bad.
Then we try to do the right
thing.
Hopefully this will put the
brakes on this white line controversy and put it in park
once and for all.

Lot of Nonsense
I might as well weigh in on the

most important issue facing people who need stamps or a passport. I feel your pain. No, its
not about getting stuck on a post
office line behind three people,
each of whom has a refrigerator-sized cardboard box that has
to get re-taped and re-labeled.
And their English isnt that good
so theres a lot of back and forth
with the clerk. Its about parking.
Maybe you got one of the four

spots in front of the 11694 post office. So now youre wondering if
you put enough money in the meter because this line is not moving.
You might be the last one on line.
Theres no one to ask: will you hold
my place? You think about running out to feed the meter but you
know ten more people will rush in
as youre pushing the button on
the meter for more time.
Or youre not the last one on

line and you glance at the people behind you. Do they look
like the type whod let you back
in line? Nope. One guy looks absolutely pissed; forget any courtesy from him.
All this anxiety, all this grief,
comes courtesy of the new Stop
& Shop policy to have cars towed
from its practically always half
empty parking lot.
Ok, first the caveat. I dont
think car owners should be
leaving their cars in the lot
overnight. I dont think people
should be parking there and
then spending the day on the
beach. But cmon, Mister Stop &
Shop or whatever your name is,
shoppers have never found the
lot to be full. Youve never lost a
customer because they couldnt
find a parking space.
Some people, just a few, who
probably dont drive, have said
its a private lot, the owners can
do what they want.
Ok, well, riddle me this.
You have to get groceries and
stamps. What do you do? What
do you do if theres no available
street parking? First, you use

the big, practically always half
empty lot while you shop for a
hundred dollars worth of groceries. So far, so good. But you
still need stamps. Do you then
have to get in your car and drive
around looking for street parking? Youve spent a hundred
dollars in Stop & Shop but you
cant run into the post office because B &M towing might hook
your car AND your groceries.
You cant go to the post office first because you wont be
able to afford the groceries after
you come out and find your car
missing, thanks to B & M.
The Stop & Shop website says
they like to be good neighbors.
Itd be neighborly if they allowed
the local store manager to make
the call to the towing company
if the parking lot privileges were
being abused; if the practically
always half empty lot was suddenly packed. Or maybe somebody from their corporate office
in Quincy, Mass. could pay a visit theyd have no problem finding a spot in the big, practically
always half empty lot---for a
look-see. I just hope they dont
need a stamp.

Pipeline Co Awards 25 Grants

Williams, the company behind
the Rockaway natural gas pipeline, has announced its grant
winners from the Rockaway
Community Grant Program for
the fall of 2016. This time, 25 organizations received grants up to
$15,000 for a total of $124,000 in
grants.
The Rockaway Community
Grant program is designed to
benefit the environment and local communities in which Williams operates its Transco natural gas pipeline near Rockaway.
Williams has provided more than
$700,000 in grants since the program started in 2014. Twice a
year, community organizations
that reside in or provide service
to Rockaway can apply to the
program. Grants up to $15,000
per organization are awarded to
organizations promoting initiatives that support environmental
enhancement, education, economic development, emergency
services, youth and senior programs. Community organizations can complete and submit
the electronic application found
online at www.williams.com/
rockawaygrant.
One of the grant winners was
the Rockaway Volunteer Ambulance Search and Rescue Corp,
which is receiving $15,000 for
rescue supplies. Our organization depends on community contributions like this grant
from Williams to provide first
aid and pre-hospital care to our
many Rockaway residents and
visitors, Chief Ronnie Murchinson said. This grant will be
used to purchase much-needed
rescue supplies to support our
ambulance and beach patrols.
We sincerely appreciate Williams support.
Another big grant winner
was Rockaway Point Volunteer
Emergency Services Inc, which
received $15,000 for Personal Escape Systems. Grants of
$7,500 are going to the Community Center of the Rockaway
Peninsula in Far Rockaway and
to the Breezy Point Cooperative for the Breezy Point Activity Center Generator. Twelve
groups received $5,000 grants
including the Brooklyn Bridge

So we reported on the
controversy about towing cars
out of the Stop & Shop parking
lot on Beach Channel Drive and
were contacted by the owners,
Benenson Capital. They tell us
that the entire property is leased
to Stop & Shop and it is the policy
of Stop & Shop to tow cars. They
said they had notified Stop &
Shop on the corporate level to let
them know of the communitys
concerns. By the way, City law
says tow companies servicing
private parking lots can charge
a maximum of $125 for towing
and first three days of storage
of a vehicle. If the owner of the
vehicle arrives before the vehicle
has been removed from the
property but after it is connected
to the tow truck known as on
the hook the tow operator may
not charge more than $62.50 to
release the vehicle.

Debate Night At Bungalow Bar

A typical Monday night in Rockaway. About a dozen friends and

new acquaintances gathered at
the Bungalow Bar for cold drinks,
good food and the main event on
the big screen TVs.
Its like Pacquiao vs Mayweather, one man said. Like
that title fight, two contenders
took turns and traded jabs, trying to land a blow. The contest
alternately earned the cheers or
groans of the bar crowd.
In this case contenders were
known as Trump and Clinton.
The title fight was for the Presidency of the United States.
The night was hosted by Mike
Scala, a legislative aide to State
Senator James Sanders and former Congressional candidate
himself.

for their first debate, broadcast
live from Hofstra University in
Hempstead.
It was a last minute thing,

Contrasts

So the last few columns have elicited some interesting responses.

I have received some supportive
comments like, wow, great articles
on birds, trees and bugs. Ok, well
that was really me, ghost-responding on Facebook to the articles.
Some have suggested that these articles have been ghost written by
the mermaid, reflecting on natures
friends to the mermaid population.
They say that the articles have lacked
the biting narrative style of the Lazer.
Some have even gone as far as moving the articles to the back of the paper and re-instating that bald-headed, bespectacled caricature again (I
have no idea who would have such
power!).
But all of that conjecture is false.
You see I am at heart a naturalist who enjoys the natural beauty
around us all. Having found yoga
late in life, I now have respect for
all living beings, and this series of
nature articles was my way of sharing that love of nature. At the risk

Dunne, let me share with you a trip I

recently took to the Canadian Rockies by way of Tauck Tours. And for
those who wonder, I do not get any
remuneration from those named in
my articles, but am always open to
negotiation!
Anyway, away we go!
The Canadian Rockies are absolutely beautiful and majestic.
Our tour included a seaplane ride,
an overnight train trip, an Ice Explorer ride on a Glacier, and a river
rafting trip! The Canadian Rockies
are filled with aquamarine lakes,
rushing rivers and mountains that
rise up until they are encrusted
with snowy caps. And animals, oh
yes animals, elk, bears, wolves, you
name it they got em. Trees? Pines,
firs, tamaracks, larches, quaking
aspens, all so different than the
northeast, thousands of them. And
birds, oh yes birds, eagles, bald,
golden and every variation in-between. Unbelievable. People? No,
very few of them. But those that
were there were extremely nice. In
fact we have almost 10 times more
people in the US than Canada. I
dont know why we havent just annexed the country.
What does all this have to do with
contrasts you say? Glad you asked.

You see living at the beach, we dont
see any of those things above on a
regular basis, but seeing the Pacific
Northwest makes me appreciate
what we have here so much more,
because it is different. We live in a
great beach community that has the
potential to get better every year. We
have great neighbors and artists and
musicians and yogis. We even have
two newspapers! You see we need
contrasts in life. What would summer be without winter? What would
day be without night? What would
the beach be without mountains?
What would the country be without
the city?
So years from now when some
say, You know I really appreciated
that series of nature articles the Lazer wrote all those years ago, because
they were different from his regular essays, it will be remembered
because of contrast. Sometimes
we need to sit back and appreciate
the beauty around us regardless,
whether its the beach or the mountains; or family, those here and
those departed. The sunlight and
the shadows and the contrast in-between make for a beautiful picture,
lets take as many as we can.

SPOTLIGHT ON ROCK LOCATIONS

The Detective. It was transformed into old Atlantic City
for HBOs Boardwalk Empire. Blue Bloods brought
Donnie Wahlberg here earlier
this year. Rockaway is famous.
At least its made some cameos. And now Rock Locations
is looking to put more of a
spotlight on the peninsula as
a film hotspot.
Claudia Bloom has experience in a variety of media and
film from publishing to acting and even coaching actors
herself. After moving from the
Upper East Side to Rockaway
last November, Bloom wanted
a way to work within her new
hometown. I was looking for
a creative outlet to keep me
working more at the beach
than spending too much time
on the A train commute,
Bloom said. With her back-

ground in media and TV/film,
she recognized Rockaway as
an ideal backdrop for filming
and photography and saw an
opportunity to bring attention
to the peninsula. I started to
think about the richness and
beauty of this urban beach
community and I knew things
had been filmed here before,

but I was thinking about how
I can use my skills and knowledge of the film business and
making connections here. I
started asking local businesses if they would be interested
in having their place used for
a shoot and a lot said yeah,
sign me up, Bloom said. She
launched Rock Locations in
January, a company designed
to connect those looking to
shoot a project, with businesses and homes that owners are willing to be used for
media production projects.
As a surfer herself, Bloom
started with those in the surf
community, such as Breakwater Surf Co and the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. She
has since added Marina 59,
Rockaway Brewing Co, Ship
to Shore Wine Shop, Sayras
Wine Bar, Zingara Vintage,
NiLu Kids, Off Season Boutique, New York Arbor Gal-
lery, All Seasons Retreat and

the Swellife mobile boutique,
plus even more businesses
pending. Soon homeowners
started to offer up their properties, like the guys behind
Locals Surf School, who own
a Rockaway Beach surf house.
A large Neponsit home, a
Beach 117th Street cottage,
two bungalows on Beach 24th
and about three other homes
are also up for a chance in the
spotlight.
Through her connections
in the industry, and simply
through networking with film
crews that come out to Rockaway, Bloom is also building
up a list of contacts that may
see the potential for these
Rockaway locations to be used
for things such as print media, films, television shows,
commercials, music videos
and more. So far Bloom has

shootings have taken place yet,
but she sees the idea taking off.

Bloom sees many benefits in
utilizing Rockaway homes and
businesses for shoots. Among
them are proximity, affordability, the potential use of the
diverse locations and giving
the neighborhood a boost in a
post-Sandy Rockaway. There
is a convenience factor with
Rockaway, being so close to
the city, Brooklyn and Queens.
Its also close to JFK Airport, if
someone were to come from
Los Angeles for a shoot, Bloom
said. The peninsula also presents more affordable options.
If a wine bar in Rockaway
needs to close down for the
day, the filmmakers budget is
going to be lower than if they
close down a wine bar in Man-
hattan, Bloom said. She envisions the locations she has

being used to represent other places. You walk into this
huge home on the bay block
and you could be in the Hamptons. You walk into the Rockaway brewery and you can be
in Brooklyn or you go to Marina 59 and you can be in Mystic, Connecticut. I see so many
ways to use these locations,
she said. Bloom says the exposure will also benefit the
community. This will continue to put Rockaway on the
map. A lot of these locations
are new and they could use
some promotion and a financial boost. If youre watching

Beloved Young Man Dies

Many locals were shocked
with the tragic news that Kirk
Deligiannis, 31, died suddenly on Sunday, September
25, 2016.
Kirk grew up in Rockaway, attended PS 114, then
Bay Academy and Poly
Prep in Brooklyn. He went
on to study engineering at
the Steven's Institute in NJ
and being the consummate
over-achiever earned both
an MBA and Master's in
Engineering at The Kelley
School of Business at Indiana University.
Kirk was always a sports
enthusiast- ice hockey, football, lacrosse and his passion to challenge himself
both physically and mentally continued way into
adulthood. He began with
'easy' competitions such as
Tough Mudder and went on
to found a website and blog,
Mettle Forger, which worked
in creating physical challenges where 100 percent of
the proceeds were donated
to Veteran charities such as

the Green Beret Foundation
and Team RWB.
Kirk is survived by his wife
Maria (nee Marinakis), his
high school sweetheart ; his
two sons George 2 1/2 and
Evangelos 1, his parents Jane
and George (affectionately known locally as LongHaired George) and sister
Ariana along with so many
family and friends that held
him dear to their hearts. He
will be forever missed.

Home 1305 79th street Brooklyn, NY on Friday, September
30th from 2-5 and 7-9.
Mass is on Saturday, October 1 at Holy Cross Church in

Painting Blind
ARTIST BRENDAN PATRICK TO DO LIVE PAINTING EVENT AT TILDEN

Brendan Patricks art would be

impressive even if you already
knew he created much of it after
he couldnt see.
Patrick will be celebrating and
documenting his art by doing a
live painting event at the Rockaway Artists Alliance T-7 Gallery
this Sunday, October 2. He also
has works in RAAs current exhibition, ARTSplash. Between
12 and 4 p.m. at Fort Tilden visitors will have opportunity to see
those works, watch him painting
live in the gallery, meet the artist
and talk with him about his process.
Through complications of cystic fibrosis and medical ailments,
he no longer has his eyesight.
Filmmaker and friend Rob
Cousineau will be capturing
the event for a documentary on
Patrick and his work. The film, a
work in progress, is called Cant
See Sh*t.
There will be also music, food

and drink. The event is hosted
and was arranged in collaboration with RAA by friend of the
artist, Jesse Paris Smith.
The Fort Tilden/RAA stop is
part of a one week New York City
visit by Cousineau and Patrick.
Both are from Detroit. It is also
Patricks first visit to NYC since
losing his sight.
At age 14 his doctors advised
that he might only live to the age
of 21. He is now 35. In an interview in Inkd magazine he said
hes always had the attitude that
if Im going to die tomorrow,
Im going to do cool stuff while I

still have the time.
In fact, as Cousineau explains,
Patrick learned to create art
again in spite of having zero light
perception. He describes his
friends work as being influenced
by his background in tattooing,
and the monster movies he grew
up loving and relating to. He
has shown his work all over the
country and always had tons
of positive responses. He also
paints live at these shows in order to get people understand his
process, as well as give people a
chance to talk to him while he
creates and ask him questions
about his blindness, and his story.
Part of that story, the trip and
Sundays event is Cousineaus
documentary, Cant See Sh*t.
I have been friends with
Brendansince middle school.
Brendan and I have been
through a lot together. I've seen
him sick and healthy, but mostly
I've seen him handle his illness

like a minor inconvenience, no
matter how major the effects
really were. The effect Brendan
has had on my life will resonate
long after he is gone, and I want
to share that sentiment with as
many people as I can while he
is still here to appreciate the end
product.
Musician and artist Jesse Paris Smith has worked with RAA
before. She has performed and
organized events there. She also
played keyboards for her mother, Patti Smith, for an audience of
thousands at the musical performance which opened the MoMA
PS1/RAA Rockaway! exhibition two years ago.
About Patrick, Cousineau and
Sundays event she said, They
will be heading back to Detroit
shortly after. So it is a wonderful
opportunity not to be missed,
and a great chance to connect
with these incredible individuals.

In the never ending litany of "trigger words" and

"micro-aggressions"
continually being defined on
an almost daily basis by administrators and students
alike at our nation's institutions of higher learning,
mispronouncing a student's
name is now considered a
"micro-aggression" and is
alleged to cause that student
"anxiety" and "resentment"
with such mispronunciation
truly negating the student's
identity, which, in turn, will
hinder academic progress
as the teacher, in addition
to bollixing up their name,
is also disregarding the student's family and culture as
well.
The mispronunciation of
one's name is an occurrence
I am all too familiar with.
Born Peter Joseph Mahon Jr.
back in 1950, my last name
("Mahon") has been the
subject of a continual series
of phonetic butcheries for as

long as I can remember. My
father always pronounced
our last name as "Man". My
mother, who hailed from the
Emerald Isle pronounced
it "Mahan" but her maiden name was Kelly so she
also was not too sure. Others would appear (at least
to me) to go out of their way
to find new variations of the
name such as "Mayon" (as
in mayonnaise) or "Mahin."
Growing up in the (then)
Irish enclave of Woodside,
Queens, my last name was
the butt (pun intended) of
many jokes because of its
phonetic likeness to the
Gaelic phrase "pog mo thoin" which, bastardized in
English slang, translates to
"Pogue Mahone" meaning
"kiss my arse."

my mother's family in the
late 60's I asked my father
to ascertain the correct pronunciation of "Mahon" from
the locals there. Upon his
return after several weeks in
the "old country" I asked my
father, "So what's the deal
with our last name? He replied that the locals were
somewhat confused by our
last name as it didn't have
"Mc" in front of it (i.e., "McMahon") and he inferred
that the locals may have
thought we had intentionally dropped the "Mc" prefix as
a means of "Americanizing"
our last name, which they
also thought was culturally
inexcusable although amusing because of the resulting
likeness to the phrase "pogue mahone" as explained
above. Although at times the
Irish can be a cruel people,
they are not the only ones
with a predilection for patronymic humor.
After being laid off from
the NYPD back in 1974 I
joined the NYC Department
of Corrections in 1975 and
was assigned to one of the
larger jails on Rikers Island.
It was not uncommon to be
walking among a group of
Hispanic inmates and hear
someone shout out "aqui
viene el mojon!" which I initially thought, that upon seeing my uniform nametag, it
was simply the inmate's way
of announcing to the group
that Correction Officer Mahon was in the area. Upon
hearing this I would always
cordially reply to the group

in general, using my limited
knowledge of the language,
"Buenos Dias, como esta?"
which would always be met
with a rousing chorus of
laughter on the part of the
group of inmates. It wasn't
until several months into my
new career on Rikers Island
that another officer who was
fluent in Spanish pulled me
aside and advised me the
inmates were misreading
my name tag and that "aqui
viene el mojon!" translated
to "here comes the turd!"
which they obviously found
hilarious. As it turned out,
apparently some Hispanics
are as easily amused by the
mispronunciation of one's
last name as the Irish!
In any event, as I look back
over the past decades and
my never-ending struggle
to have my surname pronounced correctly (if and
when I can ever determine
such correct pronunciation)
I find I have suffered neither
anxiety nor resentment. Unlike those special snowflakes
ensconced within safe spaces at our universities, I do
not consider such phonetic
errors as slights against my
family, culture or having
served to negate my identity. Truth be told, I firmly believe there are always those
in life carrying much more
baggage than ourselves. Just
look at Anthony "Weiner"...
or perhaps "Whiner"...or
perhaps "Weener." No good
can come from any pronunciation, correct or otherwise, of that last name!

Remembering John Hedderson

One day in the first week of

June with the weather threatening of the endless heat and
sun to come, my friend, John
Hedderson and I got into his
small truck and took a ride
into Manhattan. We were en
route to a lumber yard to buy
the wood we needed to build
Rockaway Artists Alliances
large mural exhibition. We
had a mission. We were all
business. But having a mission and doing business
with John Hedderson meant
an adventure, a day of interesting conversation and engagement. Working on a long
project with him was an extended holiday.
On the car ride into the city
in his truck which was basically a motorized tool box
(and he knew where every
zip tie, screw and drill bit
was located) we covered a
lot of territory how he was
going to build the frames for
the indoor and outdoor murals; the story of his daughter Mary Anns Halloween
wedding she called while
we were in the car and he
took the call in the manner
of a dad whose daughter always came first ; and his dad
or grandfather coming from
Brooklyn and spending summer weekends in Roxbury
camping out before the
family had homes there.
The sky was so blue, reminiscent of the sky on 9/11,
and it prompted us to share
our stories of that day. His
story was more immediate than mine, his loss profoundly greater. We cried as
we drove up Ocean Parkway.
And then, as an hour or day
spent with John would go, we
changed course, out of our
deep, sorrowful mood, back
to the mission at hand lumber. I was really just there for
company and carrying the
check and other paperwork.
John was the one who knew
what we were doing.
He was a rock star at the
lumber yard. Everyone knew
him from buying supplies
there for various construction jobs, having worked

there and having convinced
the owner to set up a pension plan for his workers.
Within minutes our order
was placed, delivery scheduled, and the guy behind the
counter played a trick on me
that wound up with me owing him $100. He let me off
the hook because I was with
John.
We carried on, stopping at
a couple stores where John
did repairs and renovations,
picking up his paychecks. We
went from the west side to the
east, parking on Fifth Avenue
in the twenties to duck into
his home away from home
Markt, a Belgian restaurant
where he also worked, to
grab a quick lunch.
Over our meal at the bar,
joking with the bartender
and bus boys, we discovered that wed both been
undergraduates at Syracuse
University which is really not wildly unusual in the
tri-state area but for the
fact that wed spent our time
there beyond the shadow of
the Carrier Dome in the art
studios, living bohemian
lives on the fringe of the city.
John was braver than I was,
pursuing a visual art degree,
while I stayed within the liberal arts, writing on the side.
We laughed over coincidences and unintended outcomes
of plans not made.
The conversation contin-
ued for the next month as

we worked on the exhibition every day. We laughed
and grumbled and scratched
our heads. We enjoyed great
moments of triumph like
when the curators saw one of
Johns pieces hanging in the
hall of the gallery and invited him to be one of the artists in the show.
Through it all, I dont really know if John knew how
much I relied on and trusted him. John was the type of
man who said things simply
and you believed him. He
said, Ill build the show
very early on, and because
he spoke those words, I never had a moment of doubt.
Of course, this wasnt just an
instance with me. He quietly inspired confidence and
trust in everyone around

him. His was a positive presence, full of can dos and

really creative what if s.
John put a project, a painting, another person, the
greater good first in an unassuming way that was void
of ego. He was really here to
add more beauty, happiness,
gentleness, laughter and
community to the individuals and groups that came
into contact with him.
On Monday morning, he
came up to the RAA office. Always a diligent board member, he reported on the roof
leaks that hed been seeking
to fix. He stood in the middle of the room in his Storm
King baseball hat, slogan-ed
t-shirt and ripped jeans and
engaged Regina Moerdyk
and me in a spirited discussion (even though we were
all in agreement) about the
upcoming Presidential election. After about a half hour,
he headed back out, into the
rain, leaving us smiling.
We take small consolation
in that final, casual farewell. Had we known that we
wouldnt see John again, had
we known to say a real goodbye, I dont think we would
have managed. I dont think
anyone who knew John could
have managed that.
John Hedderson served as a
Director on the Board of the
Rockaway Artists Alliance
beginning in January, 2015.
He passed away unexpectedly on September 19, 2016. His
friends and colleagues at RAA
will miss him profoundly.

Dont Let It Annoy You

Heres a thought you might

not embrace right away. But at
least consider it. Think about
something you dont like doing, a simple thing for starters, maybe taking out the garbage. Now, tell yourself that
from now on, you are going to
LOVE taking out the garbage.
Make a thing of it, love it, see
it differently. Even vocalize it
to those you live with, Hey,
Im going to take out the
garbage now, and you know
what, Im happy to do it. In
fact, I love doing it.
As Mother Teresa said, Do

small things with great love.
Remember that what you think
affects how you feel, so if you
dislike taking out the garbage
only you can change that. You
can actually begin to love and
embrace the idea of taking out
the garbage. The least it will
do is to make you feel better
while you are doing it. But its
ripple effect might be more
than you can imagine. You
will have managed to change
what you think about something and therefore change
how it makes you feel when
you do it. Maybe you dont
like walking the dog, or washing the dishes. Start a new

routine if you dont like washing the dishes, maybe make
a pledge to sing happy songs
while you wash dishes, or pick
a positive phrase that you like
and repeat it with every dish
you wash. For instance, I am
healthy, wealthy and wise.
Repeat the phrase like a mantra over and over again, make
it your dishwashing mantra. If you embrace the very
things that annoy you, you
wont change the things, but
you will begin to change who
you are and how you respond
to the things that life hands
you. There is no question
that it is always better to respond to things with love and
an embracing attitude rather
than a feeling of annoyance
or dislike. This is really all
about changing our mental habits to form new, more
positive, creative ones. Remember you cant change anyone else; you can only ever
change yourself. Imagine
someone who knows you and
knows how much you dislike
throwing out the garbage,
watching you run to the garbage pail and not be frowning
or groaning about it, but now
they see that you actually ENJOY IT! Eventually, the example we set by becoming more
loving and positive inadvertently affects those around us.
Before you know it, everyone
will be fighting to take out the
garbage.
Embracing lifes little annoyances with enthusiasm
and love changes the game
and with this attitude you will
always be a winner. You can
see things as obstacles or op-

portunities. You can moan
and groan about having to do
something, or you can find a
way to make it more fun. Use
a little spiritual alchemy with
some of the daily annoyances in your life. You can turn
any negative into a positive of
some kind if you choose to.
One day a farmers donkey
fell down into a well.
The animal cried for hours
as the farmer tried to figure
out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and
the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasnt
worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to
come over and help him. They
all grabbed a shovel & began
to shovel dirt into the well.
At first, the donkey didnt
realize what was happening
and cried horribly. Then, to
everyones amazement he
quieted down. A few shovel
loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He
was astonished at what he
saw. With each shovel of dirt
that hit his back, the donkey
was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and
take a step up. As the farmers
neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal,
he would shake it off and take
a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge
of the well and happily trotted
off!!!
Everything is a matter of perspective and how we choose
to see things. We truly are the
masters of our own ship.

not in doing what one likes,
but in liking what one does.

Picture Perfect

Anyone can display family

photos or photos from trips
they took, but if you get a little
creative, it will get your pictures noticed. Here are a few
ideas on displaying your photos in a more creative way.
Family Tree: Places like
Amazon sell Family Tree
Wall Decals. There are different styles to choose from and
they are easy to apply to any
wall (just follow the instructions you get with your decal).
Once on the wall simply hand
photos of family in line with
the branches. This is great for
showing off your family tree

or using each branch to show
your child's photos as they
grow up.
Photo Mobile: Another way
to show off your photos is a
Photo Mobile. They sell photo mobile kits online, but I
like the homemade ones better. The best ones Ive seen
were the simplest to make.
Once you know where you
want your photo mobile and
how many photos you want
to hang, put a small eyehook
in the ceiling for each photo.
Using clear fishing line, hang
photo sleeves (available online) at different heights and
insert your photos. The photo

sleeves allow you to change
the photos from time to time
if you like. This is great for
displaying photos of trips and
you can update them when
you take new trips.
Frame in Frame: Thrift
shops sell framed photos for
cheap. This is a good source
for larger frames. Take a large
frame (without a picture or
backing), mount it on the

as some of the members of SolShyne, the band Pat plays with.
1 tablespoon olive oil

12 ounces skinless, boneless
chicken thighs, cut into bite
size pieces
teaspoon kosher salt, divided
1-1/2 cups chopped red onion
1 cup chopped celery, matchstick size
1 cup chopped carrot
1 tablespoon chopped fresh
rosemary
1 tablespoon fresh chopped
thyme
5 cups unsalted chicken stock
(or your own homemade), divided
8 ounces whole wheat potato
gnocchi
2 tablespoons all-purpose
flour
1 cup frozen green peas
wall. Take a second frame

(with your favorite photo) about half the size and
mount it center of the large
frame. Then hang smaller
(unframed) photos around
the smaller frame (but in the
larger frame).
There are many more ways
to display your photos, if you
have ideas you would like to
share send them in, I may use
them in future articles.

black pepper
Heat a large Dutch oven over
medium-high heat. Add oil;
swirl to coat. Sprinkle chicken with teaspoon salt. Add
chicken to the pan; cook 5
minutes or until browned,
stirring occasionally. Remove
chicken from pan.
Add onion, celery, carrot,
rosemary and thyme to pan;
cook until tender, about 7 minutes. Add 4 cups of the chicken
stock, scraping pan to loosen
browned bits. Bring to a boil;
reduce heat, and simmer about
8 minutes. Add the gnocchi to
pan; cook 3 minutes or until
gnocchi float to surface.
Combine remaining 1 cup of
stock and flour in a bowl, stirring with a whisk. Slowly add
stock mixture to pan, stirring
constantly with whisk. Stir in
chicken and peas, cook 5 minutes. Stir in remaining teaspoon salt and pepper.

Eight Rescued from Boat Fire

Abandon ship! On the

evening of Sunday, September
25, beachgoers were alarmed
by thick black smoke, which
could be seen out on the
ocean. The smoke came from
a boat fire off of Sandy Hook,
New Jersey. The fire broke out
in the engine room of a boat
that was based out of Rockaway.
According to the Coast
Guard, the Coast Guard Station in Sandy Hook received a
distress call at around 5 p.m.
from a 40-foot recreational
boat stating that their vessel
was on fire. A 47-Motor Lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook and New
York Fire Department Marine
Eight and Marine Three rescue
crews responded to the scene
and found that a nearby fishing boat had picked up eight
passengers from the vessel
that was on fire after they had
jumped in the water to escape.

FDNY members in extinguishing the fire aboard the vessel.
The fire was fully extinguished
but the boat was unrecoverable and sank in 85-feet of water approximately six miles off
the coast of Sandy Hook.
According to the FDNY,

FDNY Rescue Paramedics assessed the patients, who were
not able to access their life
preservers before abandoning
ship. Luckily, none of the patients required further treatment, and they were returned

to their initial point of departure, Seaway Marina in Far
Rockaway. The boat named
Queens Girl was based out
of Rockaway. According to the
Coast Guard, following the incident, There [was] no report
of pollution in the water.

trip from Rockaway to share in
this lifetime achievement.
A Belle Harbor native and
lifelong resident, Clare was
an All-American at Christ the
King High School before heading off to Boston. Whenever
a big game was on the line,
Clare Droesch wanted the basketball. The Boston College
website hails her accomplishments: The feisty and fearless
point guard was a key contributor to a golden era of women's
basketball at Boston College.
Co-captain of the 2005 club
that knocked off No. 1-ranked
UConn again in her final home
game; and the sharp-shooting
guard who earned All-Big East
recognition with a dazzling career production of 1,136 points
(including 158 3-pointers),
539 rebounds, and 314 assists
in 126 games (BC won 92 of
them.)

to transportation, how the travel
time to Manhattan affects Rockaways economy, changes in population, mental health, non-profits, property values, the local
economy and more.
After the debate, the discussion
became even more lively.
I dont think they changed anyones mind about anything, one
woman said. If people were going to vote for Trump, theyre still
going to vote for Trump. If they
were going to vote for Clinton,
they are still going to vote for her.
This election is extremely
important, another said. We
have an empty seat on the Supreme Court. And this election
affects all the other offices. On
range of 1 to 5, this is a big 5.
One man said, Well the problem is if you dont have a majority
in Congress, youre screwed. People looking from the outside (at the
presidency) say You didnt get anything done! And youre saying they
didnt let me get anything done.
Another man added, The
problem is the real power is with
the Congress. And Congress answers to the people with money.

What are they paying attention
to? Are they paying attention to
us? Or to big business?
Others agreed that Congress, and
every other elected position, needs
to have term limits and turn over.
Our nation changes, the world
changes. We need fresh ideas,
the man next to him offered. It
takes new eyes to see the things
that dont work. What concerns
me, what affects us, more is our
local politicians, our local elected
offices, Scala said.
If the Fed cant understand
what happens at the local level,
then we have a big problem, another man added.
About watching the debate at
Bungalow Bar, instead of an office
or meeting room, one man said,
I think its a great location! We
should do more of these.
He said, You get to meet people. People, right and left, sit
down, have conversations.
Its all about getting people
to talk to each other. You might
spark an idea, he said.
Thats whats going to make
things happen.
