Numerical solution for 1D Wave Equation using Computational Fluid
Dynamics The wave equation is an important hyperbolic partial differential equation that describes the propagation of a wave with space and time. A partial differential equation that describes the shape and movement of waves is given with a set of initial and boundary conditions. To find the value at a grid point, say , by means of finite difference methods (central difference scheme), A computer program is used to code the 1D wave equation to solve the given problem. The executed results are plotted by means of GNUplot, and the numerical solutions are compared with the exact (analytical) solutions. In general, we examine questions about the accuracy of the numerical solution with the exact solution by varying the certain constant parameters such as time step. Optimal Design of a Transonic Airfoil The transonic airfoil design problem is to optimize the design and shape of an airfoil such that the airfoil section can produce low drag, without forming a strong shock wave on the surface at transonic flow regimes. In this case the flow conditions are inviscid and transonic i.e. when the shock waves are formed on the upper and lower surfaces of an airfoil usually, which causes a drastic increase in drag. The optimal design process involves a NACA0012 airfoil at an angle of attack of 1.25 degrees, and the shape of the airfoil is iteratively changed to obtain an optimal shape which produces the minimum coefficient of drag. In order to achieve the optimized shape from the NACA 0012 airfoil, SU2 open source software is used to solve and optimize the design of the airfoil.
