PROGRAMA DE LA ASIGNATURA
Objetivos Generales
Que el alumno sea capaz de:
- adquirir competencias en lecto-comprensin analtica del discurso acadmico (cientfico y
tecnolgico)
- adquirir competencias para la produccin de textos a nivel acadmico
- adquirir competencias para realizar una tarea de investigacin sobre un tema relacionado a las
ciencias o a la tecnologa. Dicha tarea debe ser planificada, original en su concepcin y objetivos y
con resultados verificables.
- adquirir competencias para elaborar un diseo de investigacin y un informe final de la misma en la
lengua extranjera objeto de estudio, en forma de monografa o tesina, donde se satisfagan
adecuadamente requisitos del discurso acadmico.
- poner en prctica competencias relacionadas al uso de las TICs (por ejemplo el uso de buscadores,
diccionarios online, Powerpoint, Prezi, etc.) para la investigacin, elaboracin del informe y la
defensa oral del trabajo final.
- poner en prctica competencias relacionadas a la exposicin oral de un tema.
Contenidos Conceptuales
Unit I: the Writing Process (part 1)
The paper. Audience and Tone. Coherence. Support.
Steps in the writing process: prewriting drafting- revising.
* Prewriting: Selecting a topic. Determining audience, purpose and tone.Using prewriting strategies:
brainstorming, classical invention, clustering, free writing, journal writing, listing, synthesizing.
Unit 2: the Writing Process (part 2)
* Drafting: Creating a thesis statement. Focusing on audience and tone, using an appropriate style. Getting
words on paper. Knowing the essay form: introduction, body and conclusion.
Unit 3: the Writing Process (part 3)
* Revising: working with a peer evaluator. Following a revision strategy: checking for content and clarity,
grammar, sentence structure, parallelism, spelling, punctuation and capitalization.
Unit 4: ICT tools in the writing process
Using ICT tools (Word processors, Google Docs, SkyDrive, Internet, etc.) in the writing process: collecting
information, prewriting, drafting, revising, peer reviewing. Using online reference materials: search engines,
online dictionaries, vocabulary profilers and other web tools.
Unit 5 Academic Writing
Different Types of essay: Definition essay. Classification essay. Comparison-contrast essay. Cause and effect
essay. Evaluation essay. Problem/Solution essay. Characteristics of each type of essay. Strategies and steps
for writing successful essays.
Unit 6 -Citing sources
Avoiding plagiarism. MLA/APA documentation. Paraphrasing. Direct and indirect quotation. Parenthetical
citation. Correct use of footnotes for APA format.
Unit 7 -Writing a research paper (outline and final paper)
Choosing a topic. Finding information. Carrying out research. Stating the thesis. Making a tentative outline.
Organizing notes. Writing a first draft. Revising outline and draft. Writing a second draft. Typing the final
paper.
Unit 8 -Preparing an effective oral presentation

Determining audience, purpose and tone, creating a thesis, selecting appropriate vocabulary. Planning and
structure. Gathering Supporting Material. Development. Outlining. Delivery. Using audio-visual aids. Dealing
with questions. Speaking to inform, to persuade, to motivate, etc. Speaking about controversial issues.
Methods for becoming memorable: using visual aids, technology (PPT, Prezi, multimedia images, videos, etc.),
statistics, quotations, humour, etc.
Procedures
In order to accomplish the objectives of this subject students are expected to perform the following activities:
- reading different types of texts, stories, magazines, newspapers, journals and Internet articles.
- using different reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, mind-mapping, etc.
- using different listening strategies such as: listening for gist, listening for details, guessing, predicting
information, watching films and videos, understanding aural information.
- planning and developing written texts such as definition essay, comparison and contrast essay, prosand-cons essay, evaluation essay, research outline, research paper, surveys, questionnaires, etc.
- performing communicative activities: group work, discussions, debates, dialogues, interviews,
questionnaires, talking about controversial issues, stating opinions, telling anecdotes, reporting and
summarizing information.
- exploring, organizing and understanding reading, aural and visual material.
- becoming more confident writers/speakers combining writing and language skills to communicate
successfully in writing/speaking.
Attitudes
Students are expected to:
- participate in class discussions and debates
- show involvement and commitment in the performance of the different activities and exercises
proposed.
- be self-confident and trust in their ability to express their thoughts and ideas in English whether in
written or oral form.
- be self-conscious and monitor their own learning and progress with the guidance of teachers and
classmates.
- respect other peoples ideas and opinions.
- accept feedback and error correction.
Requisitos para la regularizacin y aprobacin de la asignatura
Alumnos regulares
Sern considerados alumnos regulares, aquellos que cumplan con los siguientes requisitos:
exmenes parciales aprobados con 60% +
80 % de trabajos prcticos aprobados
80 % de asistencia
entrega de trabajos solicitados en tiempo y forma
b)- Sern considerados alumnos libres, aquellos que no cumplan con los requisitos mencionados para a)Trabajos Prcticos del Primer Cuatrimestre
Los alumnos escribirn ensayos de diferente tipologa conforme a lo estipulado en la unidad 5 del programa
general de la asignatura con carcter de trabajo practico evaluativo. Los ensayos debern ser entregados en
el aula virtual de la materia en las fechas estipuladas obedeciendo a las siguientes especificaciones:
- encabezado: Nombre y Apellido, materia, curso, etc.
- en procesador de texto (computadora)
- tamao de hoja: A4
- orientacin vertical
- alineacin justificada
- impresin en una carilla
- tamao de letra 10 o 12
- Fuente: Arial o Times New Roman
- interlineado doble
- sangra de primera lnea
- citar fuentes bibliogrficas siguiendo el formato MLA o APA
- presentar el producto final junto a todos sus dos borradores (drafts) y peer review forms

*Si el alumno no presenta su trabajo en el aula virtual en la fecha pactada, el prctico estar desaprobado
(sin excepcin).
*Los trabajos prcticos no se recuperan.
Trabajos Prcticos del Segundo Cuatrimestre
Presentacin peridica de avances (drafts) del trabajo de investigacin/monografa en fechas pactadas con la
docente.
Presentacin oral del diseo de investigacin siguiendo las pautas especificadas en clase.
Exmenes parciales
1er Cuatrimestre
Presentacin de una carpeta de trabajo (portfolio) con todos los ensayos del primer trmino + evaluation
essay
2do Cuatrimestre
Presentacin de un diseo de investigacin siguiendo las pautas especificadas en clase.
Presentacin oral del diseo de investigacin siguiendo las pautas especificadas en clase.
Examen final (*)
El examen final consistir en:
- presentacin del trabajo de investigacin (monografa/tesina) va email con 30 das de antelacin a la fecha
del examen final (sin excepcin). El trabajo debe enviarse a la direccin de email noeliatintilay@hotmail.com
con asunto trabajo final anlisis del discurso y debe adecuarse a los requerimientos de formato y
presentacin especificados. Una vez que el trabajo ha sido aprobado, el alumno debe imprimir la monografa
para presentar el da del examen final. Tambin debe presentar el trabajo final en formato digital (grabado en
CD) para archivar en biblioteca.
- defensa oral del trabajo de investigacin (monografa/tesina). Para la presentacin oral el alumno debe
preparar una presentacin en PowerPoint, Prezi u otro software de presentacin y seguir las pautas
estudiadas en la unidad 8 del programa general de la asignatura. La presentacin no debe durar ms de 15
minutos.
(*) OBSERVACIONES
- Esta materia no se puede rendir como alumno libre dado que tiene el carcter de taller terico-prctico.
- Solo pueden rendir en condicin de libre aquellos alumnos que hayan regularizado la materia en aos
anteriores y hayan perdido la regularidad siempre y cuando su monografa tenga el nivel lingstico adecuado
y se ajuste a los requerimientos de la ctedra (caso contrario, debern recursar la materia).
