Final Exam - Summer 2016

GENERAL CHEMISTRY I
Time allowed: 2 hours

Total: 20x5=100 Marks

1. Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is prepared by heating salicylic acid, C7H6O3, with acetic
anhydride, C4H6O3. The other product is acetic acid, C2H4O2.
What is the
theoretical yield (in
grams) of aspirin, C9H8O4, when 6.00 g of acetic anhydride is heated with 3.50 g of
salicylic acid? If the actual yield of aspirin is 2.95 g, what is the percentage yield?
2. a. Write down Hesss Law
b. Manganese metal can be obtained by reaction of manganese dioxide
with aluminum.
4Al(s) + 3MnO2(s) 2Al2O3(s) + 3Mn(s)
What is the enthalpy change for this reaction? Use the following data:
2Al(s) + 3/2 O2(g) Al2O3(s); H = -1676 kJ
Mn(s) + O2(g) MnO2 (s); H = -520 kJ
c. Define specific heat capacity
d. Calculate the heat required to heat 950 ml of water form 14C to 30C. The
specific heat capacity of water is 4.18 J/gC and density of water it 1 g/ml.

a. State following gas laws.

i.
Boyles Law
ii.
Gay-Lussacs Law
iii.
Charles law
b. Pressure inside a 0.50 L gas cylinder at 300K is 1.2 atm. What is the new pressure if
the temperature was changed to225K?

c. An 20.6-mL volume of hydrochloric acid reacts completely with a solid sample of MgCO3.
The reaction is
2HCl(aq) + MgCO3(s) CO2(g) + H2O(l ) + MgCl2(aq)
The volume of CO2 formed is 259 mL at 23 0C and 731 mmHg. What is the molarity of
the HCl solution?
4. For the each of the following write down the electron configuration of each element, draw
the correct Lewis dot structure, determine the basic molecular geometry, true shape of the
molecule and state whether molecule is polar or non-polar.
a. NH3
b. SF6
5. a. A flask contains 49.8 mL of 0.150 M Ca(OH)2 (calcium hydroxide). How many
milliliters of 0.350 M Na2CO3 (sodium carbonate) are required to react completely with
the calcium hydroxide in the following reaction?
Na2CO3(aq) + Ca(OH)2(aq) CaCO3(s) + 2NaOH(aq)
b. A chemical cleaner contains concentrated HCl. A 25.00 mL volume of cleaner
was diluted to 250.00 mL in a volumetric flask. A 20.00 mL aliquot of 0.5480 M
Na2CO3 solution was placed in a conical flask. Methyl orange indicator was
added and the solution was titrated with the diluted cleaner. The methyl orange
indicator changed permanently from yellow to pink when 25.84 mL of the cleaner
was added. Calculate the concentration of HCl acid in the concrete cleaner.
