There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling,
one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all,
who is above all and through all and in all.
The letter to the Ephesians 4.4-6
Do you ever read scripture, scratch your head, and say, Really? This is one of those scriptures.
Is there really one body in the organism we call the Church? Since 1054 there has been a
visible division in the Church between East and West. Many arguments led to that date, and
finally, with untenable dogmatic statements on both sides, the Great Schism happened.
500 years later, the Augustinian monk Martin Luther focused the full wrath of the Western Church against
him by asking for a conversation about what he considered an untenable situation. Again, a division happened; and from that one division, a plethora of dominoes began to fall in the Renaissance Church.
Now, today, 500 years after the Reformation, the Church cannot be called one body as many bodies exist with many dogmas, many ways of being the body of Christ.
So, how can this letter to Ephesus, that the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church calls scripture, speak
to the Church today?
Some would say that this scripture is prophetic. It speaks to a future time when all of Gods people will be
brought together.
Others say it speaks to a reality that God sees, but that humanity fights against with its own divisive sinfulness.
Can it be both of these views at the same time? Can it be that God sees the Church as one body even
though humanity cannot? Can it also mean that God sees that reality not only now, but into the future as
well?
On 31 October 2016, the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran Church (through the ELCA, and Lutheran
World Federation) will sign an historic agreement in Sweden. Lutherans and Roman Catholics will pray together and affirm our belief in this one body. On that day, the two entities will say to the world that many
of our divisions are null and void.
Is this what the scripture points to? I believe so. In the past Lutherans and Catholics hated, even killed one
another; now we sit down and worship together. This is Gods way.
As you know, we have been talking about the year 2017, the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation.
Throughout the year, we will be reminded of that divisive history, as well as the ways in which God brings
together the one body despite division and adversity.
Join me in praying for the Church the one body in Christ.
Peace,
Pr Tim
