Kohler native Jenna Peters clears Kohler High School

opening hurdle in her bid to earn students named National
Merit Scholarship
a spot on the LPGA Tour
Jenna Peters, who helped lead
the Kohler High School golf team
to a state championship her senior
year in 2011, was the only golfer among four from Wisconsin
to make it through the rst stage
of the LPGA Tour Q-School at
Mission Hills Country Club in
Rancho Mirage, California held
August 25-28. Jenna is a recent
graduate of Butler University,
where she golfed on the womens
team earning BIG EAST Player of
the Year in 2015.
Jenna, along with fellow Wisconsinites Lisbeth Brooks of
Waunakee, Brooke Ferrell of
Edgerton, and Jessie Gerry of
Madison were among 347 golfers who competed in the rst
stage of LPGA Tour Qualifying
School, which are annual tournaments that qualify golfers for
leading tours such as the Syme-
semifinalists
tra and LPGA. A player who

makes it through all three stages
of Qualifying School is granted
membership on the LPGA tour
for the following season known
as a tour card. The tour card allows a player to play in most of
the tours events without having
to qualify. Also, players who ad-
vance through Stage 1 and Stage

2 of Qualifying School will have
some type of status on the Symetra tour which is the feeder circuit
to the LPGA tour.

Scholarship Seminalists, and
Elise Schlecht and Luke Silvestri have been named Commended Students in the 2017 National
Merit Scholarship Program.
Angela and Nathan are academically talented high school seniors
who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some
7,400 National Merit Scholarships
worth more than $32 million that
will be oered next spring. To
be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, seminalists must
fulll several requirements to advance to the nalist level of the

competition. About 90 percent of
the Seminalists are expected to
attain nalist standing, and about
half of the nalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning
the title of Merit Scholar.
Else and Luke are also academically talented high school
seniors. Although they will not
continue in the 2017 competition
for National Merit Scholarship
Award, Commended Students are
placed among the top ve percent
of more than 1.6 million students
who entered the 2017 competition. Congratulations to Angela,

The Blue Bombers defeated Plymouth 5-1 in girls tennis on September 27. The Kohler girls tennis team
has won the conference title three out of the past four years. The girls won three of their four singles matches and all their doubles matches.

Players Theatre in Spring Green,
Wisconsin, will give an entertaining and engaging presentation
about Shakespeares most famous

September highlights
Two days after a 4-0 shutout
of St. Marys Catholic on September 15th, coach Rod Hogans
Blue Bombers boys soccer team
headed to Wrightstown for an invitational tournament, where they
opened with a victory against the
host Tigers, rallying from two
goals down to win 4-2.
In the semi-nals, Kohler faced
a familiar foe, Cedar Grove-Belgium, and came away with a solid
4-0 win.
The nal matched Kohler
against a tough Seymour team.
The two squads battled through a
scoreless game until Charlie Kelly slotted home the game winner
with less than a minute left in regulation time.

The tournament champion

Bombers were led by Joe Kay,
who found the back of the net four
times on the day. Charlie Kelly,
Colin Hogan, Ben Herold, Christian Cantrell, and Nick Wandschneider each added one goal.
After a tough loss to Oostburg
on the 22nd, the Bombers, led by
Henry ODonnells three goals,
bounced back on the 26th to crush
Ozaukee 11-1. The momentum

Pethan, John A. (1947-2016)

John A. Pethan, 69, of Kohler ,
died peacefully on Sunday morning, September 11, 2016 with his
loving family at his side. He was
born in Appleton, WI on March
7, 1947, son of the late Robert
& Alice (Roehrig) Pethan. John
was raised in Kiel, WI where he
attended SS Peter & Paul Catholic School and was a 1965 graduate of Kiel High School. John
enlisted into the United States Air
Force in 1966. He attended Air
University where he received
his certication to perform duties
as SGT, Flight Chief. He proudly
served his country for four years
as a Flight Chief working on T-33
airplanes at Richards-Gebaur Air
Base in Missouri. During his second tour, he met the love of his
life, Joyce.
On March 14, 1970 he was united in marriage to Joyce Luginbill
at the United Methodist Church
in Seneca, Kansas by Pastor Max
Stillwell and Fr. Leo of St. Peter &
Paul Catholic Church, Seneca.
John was a dedicated employee
of Kohler Company. He worked
for many years as an Engine
Lab Tech until his retirement in
April 2015. He was a member of
St. John the Evangelist Catholic
Church, the Kohler Police Athletic League, the Kohler Fire Dept
(Social Member) and served as a
Kohler Village Trustee for many
years until April of 2016. John
was an active member of the Kohler

Boy Scouts, serving
as scoutmaster for
10 years, and was a
committee member
of Bay Lakes Council Eagle Scout Advancement
Board.
In his free time, he
enjoyed
spending
time with his family, taking countless family photos, hunting with friends, xing
cars and being a great overall
handyman. As a supporter of the
Athletic Booster Club, John also
thoroughly enjoyed taking part in
all Kohler youth sports and activities, especially announcing for the
baseball team.
Survivors include his wife;
Joyce, his children; Sarah Pethan, Sheboygan Falls, Alexander
(Marivic) Pethan, Saudi Arabia,
Zachary (Erin) Pethan, Kohler
and his grandchildren; Walter &
Annette Pethan, Casper Pethan.
He is further survived by his siblings; Jane Pethan, special friend,
Don Glick, Jean (Peter) DeTroye,
both of Kiel, Diane (Marvin)
Mangan, Green Bay, David (Karen) Pethan, Karen (Mark) Miller,
both of Kiel. John is further survived by his mother-in-law; Mavis Luginbill, sisters-in-law; Ruby
Dyer, Ponca City, OK, Roberta
Luginbill, Penny Kramer, both of
Lawrence, Kansas.
He was preceded
in death by his parents, Robert & Alice, his father-in-law;
William Luginbill,
brother-in-law; Bill
Dyer Sr., nephews;
Bill Dyer & Eric DeTroye.
Funeral Mass for
John was celebrated
on Saturday, September 17, 2016
at St. John Evangelist Catholic
Church in Kohler, with Fr. Robert Lotz ociating. Family and
friends gathered at the church on
Saturday for family rites before
Mass.
Johns family would like to
thank Dr. Steven Kream and nurses and sta at Aurora Sheboygan
Clinic along with all the nurses
and sta at Sharon S. Richardson
Community Hospice for all the
care and compassion shown to
John and his family.
A memorial has been established in his name.

Decades.
Fall Follies has grown in attendance over the years. It continues
to be open to all ticket-purchasing
residents, Kohler Schools faculty
and parents, their friends, and corporate supporters. Yet attendance
has not been the only area of
growth. The nonprot 501(c)(3)
organization has tripled its proceeds through the decade, raising
well over a million dollars for the
benet of Kohler Schools.
Established in 1997, The Kohler
School Foundation helps promote excellence at the district by
awarding grants, scholarships,
professional development for educators and assistance for the ongoing and expanded needs of Kohler
Schools. Each year, the Foundation takes the proceeds from Fall
Follies and uses it to directly impact the next academic year in the
form of grants that align directly
with the districts strategic plan.

These initiatives otherwise would
not happen, as they are considered
items outside the scope of the District typical budget. Schools need
a reliable source of revenue separate from the restricted and often
challenged public funding.
Technology has, in the past,
been an emphasis for the Kohler
School Foundation, as it often requires capital-intensive hardware
that extends beyond the districts
budget. Its a logical place to
direct funds, as it often impacts
every student in the district and
gives students the opportunity to
learn more globally by expanding
the virtual walls of the classroom,
said Foundation Board president Amy Biznek, Yet, while the
Foundation is known for supporting technology, it also supports
programs that develop the student
as a whole. A great example has
been the impact the Foundation
has had with the Junior Achievement model in the middle school.

school is entering its fourth year

grade students in nance through
trips to Junior Achievements BizTown and Finance Park in the

The Kohler School Foundation
does more than that: in the past
year, the organization invested
$45,000 to support the library
renovation. In conjunction with
the generosity of the Village of
Kohler, both patrons and students
have access to several dierent
meeting environments - from individual cubicles that connect a
student laptop to the world to inviting areas to collaborate, the library is now a more exible space
for learning.
Its apparent Fall Follies has
made an impact. Over the past 10
years, it has built community and
celebrated education. With dinner,
live music and the silent and live
auction, you wont want to miss

Absentee Voting
The General Election will be Tuesday, November 8. Will
you need an Absentee Ballot? Absentee ballot applications
are available in the Village Clerk/Treasurers Oce
or online: http://www.gab.wi.gov (Form GAB-121).
Absentee voters are required to show a photo ID to vote
when voting in the Village Oces. If voting absentee
by mail, a copy of photo ID must be included with the
absentee ballot request.
Voter Registration
Are you registered to vote in the Village of Kohler? Voter
registration is available in the Clerk/Treasurers Oce
until Friday, November 4. You can also register on Election
Day. New registrants must provide a document establishing
their proof of residence as part of the voter registration
application. Valid forms of proof of residence must include
the voters name and current address. Examples: current
and valid Wisconsin driver license or identication card;
ocial identication card or license issued by a WI
governmental body; real estate tax bill or receipt for current
year or year preceding the date of the election; college ID
card (must include photo) along with a fee receipt dated
within the last 9 months; gas, electric or telephone service
statement for period commencing no earlier than 90 days
before the Election; bank statement; paycheck; check or
other document issued by a unit of government.

Brush Pick-up
The Village crew picks up brush and tree branches that
can be run through a chipper on Tuesdays. The material
must be in 4-foot lengths, maximum of 6-inch diameter and
piled neatly at the curb. No thorny material or material with
root balls is allowed. Thorny material, root balls and all
loose material must go in the yard waste cart.
Leaf Collection
Leaf collection will start on October 3rd and continue until
December 2nd. Leaves should be raked into the street
along the curb in three-foot (3) wide rows. No grass
clippings, sticks, or other garden debris is allowed.
The Public Works Department follows a schedule for leaf
collection. Each week, the collection starts on the south end
of the Village where the trees are more mature and produce
more leaves. The route continues to the west and north
sections of the Village. During the last part of October and
early part of November we may only be able to get through
the Village once a week due to the heavy leaf fall.
Fall Yard Waste
Yard waste must be put into the carts with the green lid.
On October 25th and November 1st, yard waste may be put
into additional containers after the cart is full for these two
special pickup weeks.
Emerald Ash Borers (Written by Mike Kitzerow Village
of Kohler DPW & Arborist)
Ash trees in many Wisconsin communities are under
attack by the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), an invasive,

wood boring beetle. It kills ash trees by eating the tissue
under the bark. It is native of East Asia and inadvertently
brought to the US in wood shipping crates from China.
At this point it has not been detected in the Village of
Kohler, but has been found in both Sheboygan and
Sheboygan Falls. This does not mean they are not here.
Most of southern Wisconsin is in a quarantine zone to
try to slow the spread of the beetle. We visually monitor
village trees and perform close inspections when pruning.
Emerald ash borers are very small metallic green beetles.
They are about the size of a cooked grain of rice: only
about - inch long and 1/16 inch wide. Adults emerge
from beneath the bark of ash trees in late May through
mid-July. They create D-shaped exit holes as they chew
their way out. They never wander far from the tree they
emerge from (a mile or two). Adults will feed on the
leaves but do little actual damage to trees. Larvae feed
under the bark for one or two years and create s-shaped
galleries. This is where the damage is done. Trees that are
attacked by EAB can die within 2 to 4 years. Symptoms
of the borer include bark splitting, crown reduction,
epicormic branching, and woodpecker feeding.
The Village of Kohler has approximately 300 ash trees
lining our streets. We also have many ash trees in parks,
woods, or on private property. Many of our street trees
are greater than 20 inches in diameter and have grown
to the point where they provide signicant shaded
canopy, provide value to homes and aid in rainfall runo
reduction. All of our ash trees are susceptible to the borer.
Our treatment program began as soon as the borer
was discovered in Wisconsin, approximately six years
ago. Trees were evaluated for structural soundness and
condition. Those that were sound were treated. Initial
treatments were done with Emamectin Benzoate, a
product that will remain in the trees for three years. The
village trees were divided into thirds and put on a three
year treatment rotation. Treatment is done by injecting the
product into the trunk at the root collar. Recently we have
switched our injection methods to try to reduce damage
to the base of the tree and risk of public exposure to the
product. All of our injections are done by Department of
Public Works sta that is Wisconsin certied pesticide
applicators.
Moving forward, ash trees in the village will need to
be continually treated. We will continue to update our
program to use the most productive and cost eective
methods of treatment. Trees that were deemed to be
structurally unsound are being removed and replaced with
new varieties. We have yet to see whether the treatment
programs will save the trees over the long term or just
delay the insect-borne damage. Residents can help slow
the spread of this insect by limiting the movement of
rewood into the village. On its own, the beetle will y
only a few miles, but is easily moved in ash rewood.

Trick-or-Treat
The Kohler Police Department wants trick-or-treating to

be fun and safe for everyone. To help that cause, Ocer
Hocevar will be holding a Safe Trick-or-Treat Awareness
Program in the school for the younger students. He will be
passing out trick-or-treat bags from the Police Department.
During Trick-or-Treating, which will be on October 31st
from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., ocers will hand out the glow
necklaces to any child that wants one. The glow necklaces
will make the children more visible as they are enjoying the
night out. Choosing a costume where the kids are able to
maintain good vision is also a very good idea.

Library. Paula Anderson called roll. The following board members

COMMUNITY INPUT SESSION
Thank the community members for their participation and Christina
Koberstein and Steve Cassady for providing board support. The
small group created an opportunity for conversation and identified
the following values:

Meeting individual student needs: physically, emotionally,
academically and socially
Fostering student success, high performance in and outside the
box
Community engagement
Strong and supportive school board
Applied learning for future skills readiness
Clear paths to a future toward college and technical schools.
THE START OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR
Officially begins with registration. 70% of families registered. The
process went well owing to the office dream team: Paula Anderson,
Matt Kautzer, Lynn Vander Schaaf, Rebecca Remberg, Linda Neil,
Theresa Theune, and (retired) Jeni Rydz. Volunteers: Wendy Kukla
and Rich Tengowski, Deb LaDuke, Lacy Wiest, Deb Konecke, Lori
Ollman, Kim Wilkens, and Kelli Vroom. We are aiming for online
registration next year to streamline the process further. Technology:
Nate Miller and Facilities: Jeff Schulz, Mark Gabrielse, and Lloyd
Bleuel for their steady work.
Kohler Schools will welcome new staff with an orientation and
luncheon on Monday Aug 22 and welcome back the faculty and
staff at presession on Aug 29-31. Highlights include:

STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION
E-Newsletters for each school are keyed and ready to
launch. Special thanks to Tim Brown, Lisa Greene, Joe Hildebrand,
and Nate Miller for leading task forces and school and community
members for their hands-on help. The ultimate goal is to provide
information parents and the community want that is easily
accessible and delivered to them. Sections of the E-Newsletter
include: Back to school welcome and information, happenings and
highlights, and links to public notices school board meetings.
The district website is now mobile friendly and features
improvements. See the Athletics and Activities tab! Upcoming
events are now linked the E-newsletters and Facebook.
Our Facebook trend increased by 575% in people engaged and
174% by weekly total reach. Thanks to Joe Hildebrand, Lisa
Greene, Tim Brown, and Paula Anderson for their targeted efforts.
Elementary Principal Report (Lisa Greene)
Teachers have been busy getting their rooms ready for the
students.
We will be attending the PBIS Leadership conference in Wisconsin
Dells on August 16-17. Our PBIS leadership teams will be attending
this with the admin staff. This conference gives us all an excellent
opportunity to share and celebrate school and district level
successes and identify ways to build upon our PBIS program.There
are a variety of breakout sessions to learn new things and provide
opportunities to network with other educators around the state
to share ideas and learn from each other, as well as some team
planning time to work on our plan for the year.
Upcoming events
New staff will be coming in for a day of orientation on Monday,
August 22. They are all excited and ready to go!

I am excited for the start of the 2016-17 school year. I can only
hope to express the impressive work of Lynn Vander Schaaf,
Rebecca Remberg and Paula Anderson district administrative
assistants for all of their behind the scenes work, Christine Voice
and Laura Multer for scheduling students, and the work of our
custodial staff to get the building ready for our staff and students to
arrive in a few weeks. We have had a productive summer and are
ready for the school year. I wish to also thank the school board for
a successful 2015-16 school year and looking forward to 2016-17
and beyond.

We received unofficial notice that Kohler High School earned
2016 Top 500 Public High School from Newsweek Magazine. To
determine ranking, Newsweek analyzed two aspects of school
performance: the academic achievement of all students on state
assessments in reading and mathematics and the extent to which
high schools prepare their students for college.
Highlights:
Kohler High School ranks in the top 1% of all High Schools
nationally.
Kohler High School ranks in the top half of this 1%.
Kohler High School ranks #4 in the state of Wisconsin.

Strategic Communications and School Perceptions
I wish to extend a great appreciation to our community for
supporting the district work on many fronts. From Strategic
Planning initiatives to structural changes to our parent and new
student orientation, and through the creation of an electronic
newsletter, our community and teachers have certainly
demonstrated a vested interest in improving our school.
We are dedicated to improve our messaging. We have focused
on Facebook as one instant way to which is happening in our
schools daily. Joe Hildebrand has updated the look to our Athletics
and Activities website for improved transparency and ease of
finding information. Lisa Greene and myself are creating monthly
electronic newsletters to update our entire community as to more
medium and long range planning as well as that which can be
expected in upcoming months. Our administrative staff will be
hosting community sessions on a regular basis to educate and
reach out to families. We are excited about these initiatives and
want to communicate that we are listening and responsive to the
needs of our families.

The 2015-16 fiscal year ended June 30, 2016 and, as expected, the
year ended with a favorable bottom line variance. The variance was
the result of underspending in various categories, with the majority
of the favorable variance in wages and benefits (vacancies), special
education, purchased services, and non-capital supplies.
The preliminary 2016-17 budget was approved by the board in
June 2016. The final 2016-17 budget and tax levy will be approved
on October 24, 2016 at the annual meeting. The major variable
at this point is enrollment, which continues to be monitored. Final
enrollment numbers (which is the primary factor affecting revenue)
for the 2016-17 school year are based on the 3 rd Friday pupil
count in September that is conducted on September 16, 2016.
The annual financial audit conducted by the schools external
auditors has concluded. Similar to past years, the results were
favorable no issues of significance were identified. While this is
commonplace for the district, it should not be overlooked and is the
result of the efforts and dedication of many staff members.
