EMC Avamar Data Store Gen4S Customer Service Guide

CHAPTER 1
Replacing Avamar Gen4S Server Components
This chapter provides an overview of the hardware environment in which you might
perform customer replaceable unit (CRU) procedures for Avamar Data Store Gen4S
systems. You should familiarize yourself with this information and the procedures in the
following chapters before performing any component removal or replacement.
Topics in this chapter include:

Avamar Data Store component locations ................................................................. 10

General information for removing and installing CRUs ............................................. 16

Replacing Avamar Gen4S Server Components

Replacing Avamar Gen4S Server Components

Avamar Data Store component locations

A 14-node example (one Gen4S
utility node and 13 active storage
nodes) of the initial configuration
of a standard Avamar Data Store
multi-node server is shown at
right. Initial configurations can
span from 4 to 18 nodes (one
utility node plus a maximum of 16
active storage nodes and one
optional spare storage node).
When performing remove and
replace procedures in this
document, use this diagram to
determine component locations.
Because previous component
replacement might have changed
the arrangement of nodes in your
rack, always use the instructions
in this guide to verify the location
of a defective component before
continuing.
Each rack configuration has 40U
capacity, the utility node taking
up a 1U increment and all storage
nodes 2U increments. The utility
node is located at the bottom of a
multi-node configuration with
active storage nodes and an
optional spare storage node
stacked above it. Additional
nodes can be added in expansion
slots starting with the lowest
available slot. Since a spare can
replace any defective storage
node, and because a replacement
node can become the new spare,
the location of any specific
storage node can vary over time.
Switches A and B at the top are Avamar Data Store internal network switches. Switch A is
the bottom one.
The minimum ADS Gen4S configuration is one utility node and three storage nodes;
maximum is one utility node, 16 active storage nodes, and an optional spare storage
node.

10

EMC Avamar Data Store Gen4S Customer Service Guide

Replacing Avamar Gen4S Server Components

Utility node
In scalable multi-node Avamar servers, a single utility node provides essential internal
services for the server (for example, administrator server, replication, external
authentication, network time protocol [NTP], and Web access). Because utility nodes are
dedicated to running these essential services, they cannot be used to store backups.

Single node Avamar servers

Single node servers are individual Avamar storage nodes configured to perform both
utility node and storage node functions. The information in the following chapters
accounts for both single node and multi-node CRU servicing.

Extended Retention Gen4S Media Access node

The Gen4S Media Access node exports backup data from an Avamar server to a tape
library (physical or virtual) for long-term retention purposes. It has a 10GbE port and an
HBA port that allows a tape device to be connected directly to the node via fiber-optic
cable. It is not part of an ADS Gen4S server (not connected to the Avamar systems internal
network).

Gen4S NDMP Accelerator node

An Avamar NDMP Accelerator (accelerator node) is a dedicated single-node Avamar client
that, when used as part of an Avamar system, provides a complete backup and recovery
solution for supported EMC Celerra IP storage systems and Network Appliance filers by
using Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) to communicate with these storage
devices. It is not part of the ADS Gen4S server.

Recommended tools and supplies

To perform the CRU replacement procedures in the chapters that follow, no tools or
additional supplies are required.

General information for removing and installing CRUs

This section describes precautions you must take and general procedures you must follow
when removing, installing, or storing customer-replaceable units (CRUs). The procedures
in this section apply to CRU handling during general replacement.

Avoiding electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage

When replacing CRUs, you can inadvertently damage the sensitive electronic circuits in
the equipment by simply touching them. Electrostatic charge that has accumulated on
your body discharges through the circuits. If the air in the work area is very dry, running a
humidifier in the work area helps decrease the risk of ESD damage.
16

EMC Avamar Data Store Gen4S Customer Service Guide

Replacing Avamar Gen4S Server Components

Use the following precautions to prevent damage to the equipment:

Provide enough room to work on the equipment.

Clear the work site of any unnecessary materials or materials that naturally build up
electrostatic charge, such as foam packaging, foam cups, cellophane wrappers, and
similar items.

Do not remove replacement or upgrade CRUs from antistatic packaging until you are
ready to install them.

Gather the ESD kit and all other materials you need before you service a component.
Once servicing begins, you should avoid moving away from the work site; otherwise,
you may build up an electrostatic charge.

Use the ESD kit when handling any FRU.

If an emergency arises and the ESD kit is not available, follow the precautions in
Emergency procedures (without an ESD kit) (page 17).

Use the ESD wristband supplied with your system.

To use it, attach the clip of the wristband (strap) to any bare (unpainted) metal on the
cabinet enclosure. Then secure the wristband around your wrist with the metal button
against your skin.

Emergency procedures (without an ESD kit)

In an emergency, when an ESD kit is not available, use the following precautions to reduce
the possibility of an electrostatic discharge. These steps ensure that your body and the
subassembly are at the same electrostatic potential.
IMPORTANT
These precautions are not a substitute for the use of an ESD kit. Follow them only in an
emergency.

Before touching any CRU, touch a bare (unpainted) metal surface of the enclosure.

Before removing any CRU from its antistatic bag, perform the following at the same
time:
Place one hand firmly on a bare metal surface of the enclosure.
Pick up the CRU while it is still sealed in the antistatic bag.
Once you have done this, do not move around the room or contact other furnishings,
personnel, or surfaces until you have installed the CRU.

When you remove a CRU from the antistatic bag, avoid touching any electronic
components and circuits on it.

If you must move around the room or touch other surfaces before installing a CRU, first
place the CRU in the antistatic bag.
When you are ready again to install the CRU, repeat these precautions.

General information for removing and installing CRUs

17

Replacing Avamar Gen4S Server Components

Removing, installing, or storing FRUs

Use the following precautions when you remove, handle, or store CRUs:

Do not remove a CRU from the cabinet until you have the replacement available.

Handle a CRU only when wearing a properly attached ESD wristband.

Attach the clip of the ESD wristband to the ESD bracket or to a bare metal portion of
the CRU's enclosure. Secure the wristband around your wrist with the metal button
against your skin.

Handle a CRU gently.

A sudden jar, drop, or vibration can permanently damage some CRUs.

To prevent personal injury or equipment damage when removing, installing, or

handling CRUs, use both hands and provide extra support at the heavy end of the
CRU.
The weight of some CRUs is not evenly distributed.

18

Never use excessive force to remove or install a CRU.

Store a CRU in the antistatic bag and specially designed shipping container in which
you received it.

Use the special shipping container to return the CRU.

If you must store a CRU for a short time, ensure the temperature of the storage location
is within the limits specified by CRU technical specifications.

Replacing a Hard Drive

Overview
The following instructions call for hard drives in removable carriers to be removed from
and replaced in a backplane on the nodes system board.
IMPORTANT
You must use only drives that have been tested and approved for use with the Avamar
Data Store server and associated nodes.
Replacement hard drives for the Avamar Data Store server arrive blank at the customer
site, and they require no manual configuration. RAID software automatically rebuilds the
hard drive image when the new one is detected.
Before performing the following procedure, obtain the following information about your
Avamar system or node, as applicable:

Fully-qualified domain name of the Avamar server

Service tag/serial number of the Avamar node with the defective hard drive

IP address for the Avamar node with the defective hard drive

Physical disk ID for the defective hard drive

IMPORTANT
If you do not have this information, contact EMC Customer Support before proceeding.
To avoid inadvertently damaging sensitive electronic circuits in the equipment, ensure you
follow precautions and general safety procedures when removing, installing, or storing
customer-replaceable units. See General information for removing and installing CRUs
on page 16.

After replacing the physical hard drive, the RAID system automatically begins rebuilding
the data on the node. Typically, the sled LED indicator turns to a slow amber blink when
the hard drive is rebuilding. Ensure the rebuild is successful by performing the following
steps.
1. In your original PuTTY session, type the following command on a single line:
avsysreport pdisk | egrep 'Status|Physical Disk ID'

In the output above, the hard drive you replaced should display status of Rebuilding.
Highlight the entire Physical Disk ID line for the rebuilding hard drive (copies the text)
for use in the next step.
IMPORTANT
If the Status of the replacement disk drive is not Rebuilding, the node has more serious
problems than just a defective hard drive. In that case, arrange for a complete node
replacement.

Status (Rebuilding). The RAID rebuild process can take hours to complete. It is finished
when Status is Online, Write Caching is Disabled, and Rebuild Progress is Not
Applicable.
IMPORTANT
If the Status of the replacement disk drive is not Rebuilding, the node has more serious
problems than just a bad hard drive. In that case, arrange for a complete node
replacement.

Replacing a Power Supply

Overview
Each Avamar Data Store Gen4S node contains two power supplies, the second serving as
a redundant, hot-swappable power source. The node requires at least one power supply to
operate normally. The node is in redundant mode when two power supplies are installed
and both power supplies are connected to an AC power source. If either power supply
fails, it can be replaced during normal system operation.
The following conditions must be noted:
Table 7 Types of backups
Scenario

Requirement

Power supply removal in a

powered-on node

Remove only one power supply at a time.

Extended operation with only

one power supply

If one power supply must be removed for a period of time, the

remaining power supply must be installed in the left bay and a
blank installed in the other bay.
Notice: Extended operation of a node with only one functioning
power supply and no blank can cause the node to overheat.

Before performing the following procedure, obtain the following information about your
Avamar system or node, as applicable:

Fully-qualified domain name of the Avamar server

Service tag/serial number of the Avamar node with the defective power supply

IP address for the Avamar node with the defective power supply

To avoid inadvertently damaging sensitive electronic circuits in the equipment, ensure you
follow precautions and general safety procedures when removing, installing, or storing
customer-replaceable units. See General information for removing and installing CRUs
on page 16.

Recommended tools and supplies

Tools required to replace a power supply in an Avamar Data Store Gen4S node:
None

Identify the node with the defective power supply

The following describes how to identify the node that requires a power supply
replacement.
4. Remove the front bezel of each node.
a. Press both tabs on the front of the bezel.
b. Pull the bezel away straight from the rack. See the next image (M600 node, M1200
node, M2400 node, Avamar Business Edition [S2400] node, or Gen4S Media
Access node example).

5. Locate the service tag on the left side of the front of the node. See the next two images
(top: Gen4S utility or accelerator node, bottom: M600 node, M1200 node, M2400
node, Avamar Business Edition [S2400] node, or Gen4S Media Access node).

6. Pull the service tag out to reveal the serial number of the node.
7. For the node with the defective power supply, leave the bezel off. For all others,
replace the bezel.

Replacing a Power Supply

Remove a power supply

IMPORTANT
When performing power supply replacement, use appropriate electrostatic discharge
precautions, including the use of a grounding strap. Also, ensure you remove the defective
power supply because disconnecting the working unit would most likely power off the
node. Powering off a node "ungracefully" can cause numerous problems.
After locating the node requiring servicing, verify which power supply must be replaced by
performing the following.
1. Using PuTTY, the IP address of the node, and a computer on your network with access
to the node, open a session as admin user.
When prompted, type the default admin user account passphrase and press ENTER.
2. Change to root user by typing:
su root

When prompted, type the default root user account passphrase and press ENTER.
3. Determine which power supply is defective by checking their statuses by typing:
ipmitool sdr type "Power Supply"

Information similar to one of the following is displayed:

PS1 Status | 50h | ok | 10.1 | Presence detected
PS2 Status | 51h | ok | 10.2 | Presence detected

PS1 Status | 50h | ok | 10.1 | Presence detected

PS2 Status | 51h | ok | 10.2 |

PS1 Status | 50h | ok | 10.1 | Presence detected

PS2 Status | 51h | ok | 10.2 | Presence detected, Power Supply AC
lost

One of the two power supplies should have status (text at far right) that is not
Presence detected. Only the first example above indicates two nondefective
power supplies in operation. The other examples show status that identifies which
power supply is not working (PS1 or PS2).
See next images for PS1 and PS2 locations.

4. From the back of the cabinet, locate the defective power supply.
Typically, the LED indicator turns amber when the power supply has failed.
5. Undo the retaining clip securing the module's AC power cord, and unplug the cord.
6. Push the green latch on the faulted power supply module to the left while pulling the
supply out of the server by its handle.
IMPORTANT
Use caution when removing the failed power supply. It may be hot.
See next images of Gen4S utility node and storage node examples, respectively.

Replacing a Power Supply

Replace a power supply

1. Using the functioning power supply as a guide, orient the new power supply in the
chassis opening, insert it into the power supply cage and push all the way until it
clicks into place.
See images in previous section for guidance.
2. Plug in the module's AC power cord to the power supply and power source, and fasten
the retaining clip to secure the cord.
Allow several seconds for the node to recognize the power supply and determine
whether it is working properly. A green power supply status indicator signifies the
power supply is functioning properly.
