Abstract
Geomorphologicalanaly sisaerialphotographsandgeomorphologic,
geological,geophy sical,topographical,andfieldstudiesshowthatthe
morphology ofHispaniolacanbelinkedtolateralv ariationsinthegeometry
andtectonismoftheCaribbeanNorthAmericanPlateBoundary Zone.Three
maincategoriesofthereliefwereestablished:territorialunits(1 megablock,2
macroblocks,1 4mesoblocks,209blocks,401 microblocks,and527
nanoblocks),morphostructuralalignments(4first,1 second,1 2third,and30
fourthrank),and1 6knotsbetweenmorphostructuralalignments(secondto
fourthrank).Themainseismicactiv ity isconcentratedonthefirstandsecond
ranklineaments,andsomeimportantepicentersarelocatedinthev icinity of
thelineamentintersections.Theoriginoftheearthquakesinthev icinity ofsuch
knotscanbeex plainedby theforcing/pushingofmacroblocksnortheastward.
Theex istenceofearthquakesalongthemainlineamentsmay beex plainedby
tensionorcompressioninarestrainingbendzone.Fromthecurrentstudy ,it
appearsthatearthquakeoccurrenceinHispaniolaisrelatedwiththestress
concentrationsinthev icinity ofmorphotectoniczones.Aseismotectonic
interpretationofHispaniolaisshownwherethreezonesex ist,eachofthemwith
adifferentactiv elev elanddimensions.
