(General Instructions: ErlangB Table and Okumura Chart to be permitted)

PART A (10 X 2 = 20 Marks)
Answer ALL Questions
1.

Define Grade of Service and Traffic Intensity.

2.

Differentiate Time Division Duplex and Frequency Division Duplex.

3.

What is cell dragging?

4.

Give the expression for the total electric field obtained using 2 ray ground reflection
model for vertical polarization.

5.

What are the factors influencing the small scale fading?

6.

What is the difference between Okumura Model and Hata Model?

7.

What is condition if a signal undergoes flat fading?

8.

What are the different services offered by GSM?

9.

Define hyper frames.

10.

What are the two physical channels for the uplink UTRA FDD?
PART B (8 X 10 = 80 Marks)
Answer ALL Questions

11.

With the help of Timing Diagram, explain a) How a call to a mobile user initiated by a
landline subscriber is established? b) How a call initiated by a mobile user is
established?

[10]

12.

a) A cellular service provider decides to use a digital TDMA scheme which can tolerate

[6]

a signal-to-interference ratio of 15 dB in the worst case. Find the optimal value of N

for (i) Omni-directional antennas, (ii) 1200 sectoring, and (iii) 60 sectoring. Should
sectoring be used? If so, which case (60 or 120) should be used? (Assume a path
loss exponent of n=4 and consider trunking efficiency).
b) A receiver in an urban cellular radio system detects a 1 mW signal at d=d0=1m from
the transmitter. In order to mitigate co-channel interference effects, it is required that
the signal received at any base station receiver from another base station transmitter
which operates with the same channel must be below -100 dBm. A measurement
team has determined that the average path loss exponent in the system is n=3.
Determine the major radius of each cell if a 7-cell reuse pattern is used. What is the
major radius if a 4-cell reuse pattern is used?

13.

Explain the different techniques to improve the coverage and capacity in cellular

[10]

systems.
14.

Assuming a receiver is located 10km from a 50W transmitter. The carrier frequency is

[10]

1900MHz, free space propagation is assumed, Gt=1, Gr=2. Find i) the power at the
receiver; ii) the magnitude of the E-field at the receiver antenna; iii) the open circuit rms
voltage applied to the receiver input assuming that the receiver antenna has a purely real
impedance of 50 and is matched to the receiver; iv) find the received power at the
mobile using the two ray ground reflection model assuming the height of the
transmitting antenna is 50m, the receiving antenna is 1.5m above the ground and the
ground reflection is 1.
15.

a) Find the median path lossand the received powers at the distances of 5km and 20km

[6]

from the same transmitter for the Extended Hata model. Assume fc=1800 MHz,
hte= 40m, hre = 3m, Gt =Gr =0dB.
b) Explain the attenuation factor model for indoor propagation.
